DESCRIPTION:The International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling\, s
igned in 1946\, is one of the oldest international agreements pertaining
to marine wildlife. The Convention established the International Whaling
Commission to manage the commercial harvest of whales following World War
II. But in recent decades\, with an increasing global focus on recovery
and conservation of the great whales\, the role of the IWC has changed. T
he IWC established a moratorium on the commercial harvest of whales in 19
86\, originally intended to be temporary\, but now looks to be permanent.
Only three nations now engage in commercial harvest of whales: Iceland a

moratorium\, and Japan\, which left the IWC in 2019. \n\nLearn more

Weill Cornell Medical Center\, and her medical education research fellow
ship at University of Cincinnati\, earning a Master's Degree in Medical E

She was subsequently selected as a Scholar in the Macy Faculty Scholars P

. \n\nDr. Gonzalez is an internationally renowned expert in the developm

DESCRIPTION:There are many federal and private funders who require data ma
nagement and sharing plans as part of a grant application\, including NIH
who recently implemented a new Data Management and Sharing Policy that w
ent into effect on January 25\, 2023. This workshop will cover the compon
ents of a data management plan\, what makes a strong plan and how to adhe
re to it\, and where to find guidance\, tools\, resources\, and assistanc
e for building funder-based plans. We will also discuss how to make data
management plans actionable and meaningful living documents to support re
search integrity\, reproducibility\, reuse\, and verification of results.
This workshop is a collaboration of Duke University Libraries\, the Offi
ce of Scientific Integrity\, and the Medical Center Library and Archives.
This workshop is eligible for the 200-level faculty and staff RCR. This

DESCRIPTION:A large part of how we define ourselves and how others define
us is based on what we do for a living - our professional identity. But w
hat happens when we are no longer a [fill in the blank]? How do we deal w
ith the loss of self\, the loss of professional status\, the loss of affi
liation with an elite group that we've been aligned with as long as we ca
n remember?\n\nThe overall loss of identity that we feel when we decide t
o leave academia is comparable to healing after the loss of a loved one o
r after the breakup of a long-term\, and possibly dysfunctional\, relatio
nship. Letting go can be difficult\, but we have to let go and give ourse
lves permission to grieve before reaching a point where we are ready to c
ommit to making a career change.\n\nIn this informative session\, partici
pants will learn about the emotional obstacles that can keep us stuck in
an academic career path that is no longer fulfilling. Participants will a

follow a more rewarding career path.\n\nDara Wilson-Grant\, Director of C

DESCRIPTION:ArcGIS Pro is the latest flagship desktop GIS client applicati
on from Esri. Compared to the previous ArcMap interface\, it has superio
r performance as a native 64-bit program. There are a few nice feature en
hancements such as multiple layouts in a single project\, and it's more f
ully integrated with ArcGIS Online. ArcGIS Pro can help you analyze or vi
sualize digital data that has a locational component\, and we'll discuss
starting points for obtaining data. Examples will focus on social science
data and feature (vector) layers\, but attendees are encouraged to ask q
uestions regarding their own needs and will be welcome to make one-on-one
appointments later for more focused instruction. This is an introductory
class\, and it's not necessary to be familiar with GIS software beforeha
nd. This event is open to non-Duke participants.

DESCRIPTION:R for Lunch is a one-hour lunchtime series designed to help pe
ople learn R for reproducible computational thinking. R is a data science
and data visualization tool which\, when combined with RStudio\, the Tid
yverse\, and Quarto\, provides a powerful and flexible environment for re
producible research. This workshop introduces the use of the R language f
or producing maps. We will demonstrate the advantages of a code-drive app
roach such as R for visualizing geospatial data. Participants will gain t
he skills to quickly and efficiently create a variety of map types for a
website\, presentation\, or publication. In addition to working on hands-
on coding exercises\, we will also review practical guidance on designing
effective maps. This event is open to non-Duke participants.

DESCRIPTION:For nearly half a century\, Latino/a/x communities across Nort
h Carolina have played an important role in reshaping the local and regio
nal cultural footprint. However\, the creative contributions of Latino/a/
x people are often overlooked in narratives of migration and labor in the
United States. Raíces\, Rutas\, and Ritmos aim to show that in North Car
olina\, music is central to how these communities maintain relationships
with their places of origin\, navigate shifting social circumstances\, an
d cultivate new ideas of home and belonging. The stories and voices prese
nt had enriched Duke Students\, who were able to interview musicians/migr
ants and listen to their music\, amplifying cultural traits and migration
stories. \n\nPlease register using the event URL: https://duke.qualtrics
