 e: 83 minutes\, includes one intermission\nPost-Performance Discussion on
  July 25th\nChildren's Matinee on July 26th at 12pm ($18 tickets)\n\nThe
Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC) and Paul Taylor Dance Company wi
ll (PTDC) close out the ADF season with a shared program that marks a sig
nificant milestone\, as both companies are stepping outside of their trad
itional repertory. DCDC will perform Paul Taylor's 1975 masterpiece Espla
nade\, a vibrant exploration of human movement\, takes pedestrian actions
-walking\, running\, falling-and elevates them to virtuosic heights. Set
to the soaring music of Bach's violin concertos\, Esplanade unfolds in fi
ve distinct sections\, each a testament to Taylor's choreographic genius.
From its deceptively simple beginnings to its breathtaking finale of dan
cers fearlessly careening across the stage\, the work captures the essenc
e of human experience with raw athleticism and emotional depth. PTDC will
perform Ulysses Dove's Vespers\, a mesmerizing piece originally crafted
for DCDC in 1986. Vespers celebrates sisterhood through the athleticism a
nd grace of six female dancers\, driven by Mikel Rouse's electronic score
. Combining faith and abstract movement\, the piece captivates with its p
recise\, repetitive choreography and emotional intensity. The work has tr
aditionally been performed by African American repertory companies. This
cross-exchange highlights the companies' commitment to innovation and cul
tural exchange\, making it a truly momentous performance. To conclude the
evening\, the festival has commissioned internationally acclaimed choreo
grapher and ADF alum Amy Hall Garner to create a groundbreaking new work
for both DCDC and PTDC-an unprecedented collaboration. Garner is known fo
r creating innovative works across ballet\, modern\, and theatrical genre
 s. She will develop the piece during residencies in Dayton and New York C
ity\, with a final creative week at ADF before its world premiere on thei
r shared program. The work will then be featured and toured in both compa

DESCRIPTION:We all want to find happiness through a life lived with purpos
 e. But how do our ways of thinking help or hinder us from finding meaning
in our lives? How can conscious awareness of one's emotions - a practice
called "metacognition" - open up new possibilities for true flourishing?
Join us for a lecture by Arthur Brooks\, Professor at Harvard Business S
chool\, and a conversation with Iain McGilchrist (Oxford) and Nita Faraha
 ny (Duke Law).

DESCRIPTION:Ephrat Asherie collaborates with Grammy award-winning pianist
and composer Arturo O'Farrill on the company's newest creation\, Shadow C
 ities\, a reflection on the beauty\, vastness\, and joy of the in-between
. Bringing together Asherie's innovative and rigorous choreography with O
'Farrill's singular and mesmerizing sound\, Shadow Cities is a beautiful
extension of Ephrat Asherie Dance's dedication to working with live music
. With a cast of six dancers and four musicians\, this work explores what
it means to stay afloat in the in-between.\n\n"We are split between citi
 es\, memories\, and generations\; we are an amalgam of cultures\, fully e
mbodied and fragmented all at once\; our movements are concurrently malle
able and explosive\, our identities fixed and infinitely fluid. Whether a
 s immigrants\, BIPOC identities\, or first-generation Americans\, this fe
eling of in-betweenness connects everyone in the work as we ask how and w
hy-halfway between so many disparate extremes in time\, space\, and state
-we often feel our most enlivened selves. It is from this vivid place tha
t Shadow Cities comes to life." - Ephrat Asherie
