DESCRIPTION:Left to their own devices\, students will often wait until a w
riting assignment is nearly due-cheating themselves out of much the learn
ing the assignment was designed to support. This session explores a range
of options for staging the writing process in ways that can maximize lea

DESCRIPTION:ArcGIS Online is a companion to the ArcGIS client that allows
members of a group to store and share spatial data online and to perform
GIS analysis in a browser environment. It can be used independently or in
conjunction with an ArcGIS client. We'll focus on its Story Maps\, which
provide a way to disseminate a finished product in an interactive web in
terface. The audience doesn't need to know or have access to any ArcGIS p
roducts. Story Maps allow the integration of other media (photos\, text\,
videos) and allow following changes over space and time. \n\nAttendees w
ill need to bring a laptop computer.\n\n(NOTE: Date has changed from Janu
ary 31 to February 14.)

DESCRIPTION:Making maps is a creative rather than a purely technical proce
ss. Even if you can expertly use the latest and most advanced tools\, you
still have to make design decisions based on your specific audience\, da
ta\, and goals. This workshop will present an overview of concepts in car
tography and provide practical techniques for creating effective\, visual
ly appealing maps. We will explore design principles by analyzing plenty
of examples. No specific software experience or GIS knowledge is required
.

DESCRIPTION:While teachers have traditionally given students feedback on t

n written feedback\, and students generally respond positively to the int
imacy of their instructor's spoken voice and the greater nuance of spoken

DESCRIPTION:Transcription is\, at its core\, interpretation\, and this con
sideration is crucial when confronted with the question of how to render
visually\, whether in print or digitally\, an accurate representation of
the text. This session will introduce theoretical considerations of trans
cription as interpretation\, along with a brief introduction to XML codin
g\, TEI (Textual Encoding Initiative)\, and editorial decision making whe
n designing a digital edition and marking up a text. Essentially\, how do
different choices an editor makes reflect an audience? What are the limi
tations of those choices? Though the example used in this session is a ma
nuscript from the early modern period\, the discussion and skills imparte
d are inclusive of all manuscripts.\n\nHunter Corb is a first-year master
's student in the Masters of Library Science program at the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Li
terature from Texas A&M University\, and aspires to become a rare book an
d manuscript curator.\n\nFor further details\, please see the brief descr
iption on our website at https://sites.duke.edu/paleographyworkinggroup/.
You can keep up to date on the working group's meetings via our website
or contact Dr. Jessica Hines (jessica.hines@duke.edu) to be added to the

DESCRIPTION:The final meeting of the year is on Friday April 20\, 4:00-5:0
0 p.m. in Perkins Library 218 (Tarasoff Family Reading Room). Led by Sama
ntha Arten\, this session\, entitled "Writing in Their Books: Readers of
Elizabethan Hymnals\," will consider the role of marginal notes in early
English print culture. \n\nManuscript marginalia in printed books blur th
e boundary between print and manuscript. Such annotations may organize\,
gloss\, correct\, respond to\, or otherwise engage with the printed text\
, but even mere "graffiti" such as scribbles\, doodles\, ownership marks\
, and birth and death announcements tell us something about reading pract
ices and the place of the printed book in an individual's life and in cul
ture. This talk will explore what marginal notes and other manuscript ann
otations in early modern printed books can tell us about the actual use o
f books (as opposed to publisher intentions).

DESCRIPTION:Continuously increasing international migration of labor - the
highly educated as well as low to medium skilled workers - families\, st
udents and refugees - leading to the formation or expansion of diasporas
in receiving societies on the one hand\, and the ever-changing immigratio
n and border controls in the destination polities on the other\, marks th
e global scenario of international migration. \n\nAnalyzed by deconstruct
ion of what Prof Khadria has called a "trinity of migration conflicts" -
of the dynamics of "age\, wage and vintage" interests between the sending
countries in the Global South and the receiving countries in the Global
North\, what possible alternative scenarios do trans-Asian migration pose
\, particularly involving India - one of the largest source countries of
international migrants - and the Indian sub-continent in South Asia (com
prising Pakistan\, Bangladesh\, Sri Lanka\, Nepal\, Bhutan\, Maldives and
Afghanistan) in the emerging context of GCM - the Global Compact for Mig
ration 2018? \n\nThe seminar would be a talking point for speculating the
possible impacts of GCM on the emerging trends and patterns of trans-Ind
ian and trans-Asian migration. Can these impacts be optimized through wha
t the UN called "mini-multilateralism"\, among the Asian countries - foll
owing a process that Prof Khadria has called the "Equitable Adversary Ana
lysis" (EAA) - towards convergence or divergence of the so-called "mutual
self-interests" would be a question that would be addressed.

DESCRIPTION:The history of hypocrisy in pre-Reformation England is very co
nfined and almost wholly ecclesiological (i.e.\, the friars as hypocrites
). The history of hypocrisy in early modern England is vast and potential
ly involves every lay person. How do we account for this sudden expansion
of the charge of hypocrisy? And how did early modern writers manage that
sudden\, run-away charge? In this lecture\, Professor James Simpson will
address these questions--with particular attention to great writers (Cha
ucer\, Langland\, Shakespeare)--focusing on Shakespeare's Measure for
Measure\, where Shakespeare's dark vision has it that one can defeat
the hypocrite only by ... becoming a hypocrite. \n\nJames Simpson is the
Donald P. and Katherine B. Loker Professor of English at Harvard Universi
ty. His most recent book is Under the Hammer: Iconoclasm in the Anglo-
American Tradition\, published by Oxford University Press in 2010. Re
ad more about Professor Simpson in More Event Information.

DESCRIPTION:How does Latina/o/x Studies exert pressure on the memory-work
of U.S. American cultural history\, and especially on its figurations of
racial identity? Reaching back to the early eighteenth century\, this tal
k situates third-generation Puritan Cotton Mather within Spanish colonial
and indigenous spaces and translation practices. A poetics of errancy li
nks this revisionism to the contemporary activist poetics of Juan Felipe
Herrera.\n\n\nKirsten Silva Gruesz is Professor of Literature and an affi
liated faculty member with the Department of Latin American & Latino Stud

The Transamerican Origins of Latino Writing (Princeton University Press\

DESCRIPTION:As of late\, various scholarly studies and popular media outle

of Filipino American José Garcia Villa (1908-1997) and his writings in S

DESCRIPTION:This talk is taken from a larger project on how late medieval
popular drama became a central battleground for staging contemporary deba
tes about the nature of knowledge and the politics of knowledge productio
n. The lecture shows how the history for the development of the "Christ a
nd the Doctors" pageant from the Middle English mystery cycle plays--a pl
ay about the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple--serves as an especially
rich example of the pageant's serious investment in the politics of know
ledge\, its production\, dissemination\, and regulation. In particular\,
the play demonstrates an intense attention to the precise nature of the r
elationship between physical material experience and written authority.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nBuddhist monastics are supposed to observe a large
number of rules or precepts: 250 for monks and 348 for nuns in East Asia.
In medieval Japan\, most monastics did not observe many of these\, but o
ccasionally serious monks would strive to re-establish the precepts. My t
alk focuses on two of these: Eison 叡尊 (1201-1290) and Kakujō 覚盛 (1194-124
9). They believed that the orthodox lineage of monks in Japan had been ho
pelessly compromised and so resorted to a self-ordination in which they m
editated and practiced until they received an auspicious sign from the Bu
ddha that they had received the precepts and had re-established a lineage
. Even so\, the precepts that they were focusing on would never have perm
itted such an action. My talk describes and explains their actions and ra
tionalizations.\n\nBio:\nPaul Groner received his Ph.D. in Buddhist Studi
es from Yale and teaches at the University of Virginia. His research focu
ses on the Japanese Tendai School during the Heian period and the precept
s and ordinations\, which led to research on Eison\, founder of the Shing
on Ritsu sect\, and the status of nuns in medieval Japan. In recent years
\, his interests have extended to the Tendai educational system during th
e Muromachi Period and to the establishment of Japan's first public libra
ry at the Tendai temple\, Kan'eiji. His publications consist of Saichō: T
he Establishment of the Japanese Tendai School\, Ryōgen and Mount Hiei: J
apanese Tendai in the Tenth Century\, and approximately fifty papers.\n\n
Following Dr. Groner's talk\, attendees are invited to a light reception
to formally announce and celebrate the donation of his personal library t
o Duke University Libraries. Dr. Groner's generous gift to the libraries
comprises more than 1\,200 volumes in English\, 600 volumes in Japanese\,
and 100 volumes in Chinese\, all covering aspects of East Asian religion
. Please join us in celebrating Dr. Groner's incredible contribution to t
he scholarly community at Duke and beyond.
