DESCRIPTION:Since their original proposal\, neutrinos have been linked to
nuclear physics. We can use neutrinos to probe the properties of nuclei\,
and use nuclei as targets for detecting neutrinos. In this seminar\, I wi
ll present my past research on COHERENT and nEXO\, and describe my experi
mental research program measuring nuclear matrix elements important for n
eutrinoless double beta decay of germanium-76\, searching for Dark Matter
in naturally occurring minerals with the PALEOCCENE collaboration\, and
developing new technology to detect some of the lowest energy neutrinos p
roduced on Earth. I'll describe how the resources available at TUNL can h
elp characterize backgrounds for these experiments and provide supporting
  measurements to enable this program.

DESCRIPTION:Nuclear reactions drive the energy generation and nucleosynthe
sis in stars and compact objects. Understanding nuclear structure includi
ng resonances and the properties of bulk nuclear matter is necessary for
constraining the stellar behaviour. In this talk\, I will discuss some of
my research focusing on how nuclear structure studies can be used to inf
orm stellar behaviour with particular focus on how experiments can be use
d to constrain elemental abundances and the properties of neutron stars.

DESCRIPTION:A growing body of experimental data on single-particle energie
s in weakly bound systems has materialized over the past decade or so. Th
e most illuminating of these data has been for the neutron-rich nuclei ar
ound N = 20 and 28. A smooth decrease in the separation of the 2p3/2-2p1/
2 spin-orbit splittings is observed as they approach zero binding\, which
is at odds with the well-accepted scaling\, with mass\, of measured spin
-orbit splittings across the chart of nuclides for well-bound states as e
stablished by Mairle [Phys. Lett. B 304\, 39 (1993)]. In studying the con
trast between experimental data\, the mean-field descriptions\, and the t
rends established by Mairle for both well-bound and weakly bound systems
across the nuclear chart\, with a focus on neutron spin-orbit partners\,
a seemingly universal behavior emerges that could prove predictive. Many
of the regions explored have connections to other prominent topics in nuc
lear physics\, such as r-process nucleosynthesis\, where the ordering of
single-particle energies near threshold in weakly bound systems plays a r
ole in reaction rates. Throughout\, I will highlight one of the principal
techniques used to extract such data: the solenoidal spectrometer techni
que\, now used at ATLAS\, CERN\, and FRIB. This material is based upon wo
rk supported by the U.S. Department of Energy\, Office of Science\, Offic
e of Nuclear Physics\, under Contract Number DE-AC02-06CH11357.
