DESCRIPTION:"The Dynamics of Granular Clogging" - The gravity-driven flow 
 of grains from a hole in a hopper is an iconic granular phenomenon. It's 
 different from a fluid in that the rate is constant also in that it can s
 uddenly and unexpectedly clog. How does the the susceptibility to cloggin
 g decrease with increasing hole size\, and is there a well-defined cloggi
 ng transition above which the system never clogs? This problem is distinc
 t from jamming due to the presence of boundaries and gradients. We show h
 ow the fraction F of flow configurations that cause a clog may be deduced
  from the average mass discharged between clogs. We construct a simple mo
 del to account for the observation that F decays exponentially in hole wi
 dth to the power of dimensionality. Thus the clogging transition is not s
 harp but rather is defined by observation limits\, similar to the glass t
 ransition. When the system is immersed in water\, F barely changes. There
 fore\, grain momenta play only a secondary role in destabilizing weak inc
 ipient arches and the crucial microscopic variables are likely the grain 
 positions.  Work is now in progress to distinguish free-flowing versus cl
 og-causing position microstates using machine learning. Faculty host: Jos

 d the Future of Nuclear Nonproliferation" - Nuclear energy has the potent
 ial to help reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. However\
 , the technology also has serious drawbacks. For instance\, the same faci
 lities needed to generate nuclear power for peaceful purposes can be misu
 sed to produce nuclear explosive materials\, primarily highly enriched ur
 anium (HEU) and plutonium. This risk must be more effectively managed if 
 nuclear power is to play a larger role in the world's energy mix. The sys
 tem in place to deter and hopefully detect such misuses\, the nuclear non
 -proliferation regime\, has faced many challenges over the last several d
 ecades\, including Iran\, North Korea\, and Japan. And it will have to co
 nfront new ones as nuclear energy facilities are deployed more widely in 
 politically unstable regions such as the Middle East\, without counting o
 n a commensurate increase in resources. This talk will discuss some of th
 e technical and political obstacles that the regime must overcome in orde

 dimensional quantum spin liquids have been pursued since the 1980s.  They
  are now thought to be potential hosts for non-Abelian excitations that c

DESCRIPTION:"Symmetry\, Forces and Torques in the Dynamics and Excitations
  of Optical Matter" - Optical matter\, collections of material particles 
 that are bound together with light (electromagnetic fields)\, is readily 
 formed in focused beams of light. Scattering between the constituent part
 icle elements lead to spatial structuring of the total field by interfere
 nce thereby establishing a natural length scale to the mesoscopic system.
  Our earlier work using (plasmonic) nanoparticles in solution\, addressed
  the formation of optical matter utilizing the general optical beam shape
 \, intensity and phase gradients and polarization for control. We recentl
 y demonstrated (ACS Nano\, 2018) that the visualization of driven nanopar
 ticle systems allow detailed trajectory studies of barrier crossing pheno
 mena. This talk\, based on recent publications in Nature Communications\,
  Light: Science and Applications and Nano Letters\, will focus on the sel
 f-motility and negative torque of optical matter dimers and arrays that a
 rise due to symmetry breaking of the scattered fields and the asymmetry o

DESCRIPTION:"Storing and retrieving memories in models of neuronal network
 s" - Memories are thought to be stored in brain networks thanks to modifi
 cations of synaptic connectivity between neurons. Mathematical models of 
 synaptic plasticity (sometimes called `synaptic plasticity rules' or `lea
 rning rules') capture experimental data on plasticity with increasing acc
 uracy\, but it is still unclear how realistic synaptic plasticity rules s
 hape network dynamics and information storage. In this talk\, I will firs
 t review approaches for inferring learning rules from neurophysiological 
 data. I will describe in particular a new approach in inferring the\nlear
 ning rules from in vivo electrophysiological data\, using experiments tha
 t compare the statistics of responses of neurons to sets of novel and fam
 iliar stimuli.  I will then focus on how the inferred learning rules shap
 e the dynamics of networks\, leading to a diversity of potential dynamics
  that allow the network to retrieve the stored information (fixed point a
 ttractors\, chaotic attractors\, or transient sequential activity). Final
 ly\, I will show that learning rules inferred from data are close to maxi

DESCRIPTION:"Pixel fusion: Analyzing the sky with all available data" - As
 tronomical data grow in quality and quantity\, and yet many scientific qu
 estions cannot be answered by a single data set alone. While independent 
 analyses are currently the norm\, they miss out on substantial scientific
  synergies offered by the spatial overlap of current and future surveys. 
 In my talk I will show how to build a coherent hyperspectral model from m
 ultiple data sets of the same celestial scene: imaging and spectroscopy o
 bserved from ground and space. I will introduce several novel methods fro
 m constrained optimization and machine learning. Combined\, they form a f
 ramework for "data fusion". I will discuss its benefits for cosmological 
 analyses such as gravitational lensing and studies of galaxy clusters\, A
 GNs and the evolution of galaxies. I will conclude with an outlook on how
  the upcoming surveys LSST and WFIRST will support data fusion for the en
 tire astronomical community\, enabling large-scale inference and discover

DESCRIPTION:"Topological Phases\, Qubits\, Decoherence and All That" - Top
 ological matter now is one of the most intensely explored topics in conde
 nsed matter physics.  Topological phases are theoretically conjectured to
  occur in an astonishingly vast array of different material systems with 
 a wide range of physical properties predicted - a subset of which may eve
 n be useful! Intriguingly\, certain topological phases may harbor low ene
 rgy excitations with exotic braiding statistics. When traversing closed t
 rajectories around one another\, these excitations behave not as fermions
  or bosons\, but altogether differently\, and have given a rather obscure
  appellation - non-Abelian anyons.  Theory suggests that quantum informat
 ion can be stored and manipulated in these usual beasts. I will describe 
 our attempts to build and interrogate such topological phases in semicond
 uctor and semiconductor-superconductor hybrid devices. We study phenomena
  ranging from the fractional quantum Hall effect in ultra-high mobility g
 allium arsenide to proximity-induced superconductivity in semiconductors 
 with strong spin-orbit coupling - a system that may mimic topological sup
 erconductivity.  I will focus on basic physical principles underlying dev
 ice operation\, illustrated with a few key examples.  The potential utili
 ty of such systems for quantum computing will also be discussed.  Faculty

DESCRIPTION:"The connected universe: Relating Early\, Intermediate and Lat
 e Universe with cosmological data" - The standard paradigm of cosmology i
 s built upon a series of propositions about how the early\, intermediate 
 and late epochs of the universe behave. In particular\, it predicts that 
 the universe is currently filled with dark energy and dark matter. There 
 is a broad assumption in cosmology that the universe on its earlier stage
 s is fully understood and that discrepancies between the standard model o
 f cosmology and current data are suggestive of distinct dark energy prope
 rties. However\, uncertainties in this hypothesis are not usually taken i
 nto account when forecasting survey capabilities\, even though our invest
 igations might be obfuscated if the intermediate and early universe did b
 ehave slightly different than predicted. In this colloquium\, I propose a
  program to investigate dark energy and earlier aspects of our universe s
 imultaneously\, through space missions in the 2020s in combination with c
 urrent and upcoming ground-based observatories. This program will help gu
 ide the strategy for the future WFIRST supernovae and weak lensing survey
 s. My investigations on how properties of the early and intermediate univ
 erse affect inferences on dark energy (and vice-versa) will also support 
 NASA's understanding of how future space missions can be used to test som
 e of the core hypotheses of the standard model of cosmology. Faculty host

DESCRIPTION:"Linking galaxies with dark matter structures" - In our standa
 rd model of cosmology\, dark matter constitutes the cosmic structures\, c
 ommonly known as halos\, that galaxies form within. The relation between 
 visible galaxies and dark matter halos not only informs us of how galaxie
 s form and evolve\, but also plays a pivotal role when interpreting resul
 ts from cosmological surveys and dark matter searches. However\, our limi
 ted knowledge about the galaxy-halo connection\, such as its behavior at 
 low mass and unknown biases\, has become the theoretical systematics in c
 urrent and upcoming surveys and experiments. In this talk\, I will introd
 uce the recent developments of the galaxy-halo connection on both the the
 oretical and the observational fronts. I will demonstrate how we construc
 t better galaxy-halo connection models\, how we use new datasets to const
 rain these models\, and how these improvements can reduce the said theore
 tical systematics. I will also discuss why it is critical to join the eff
 orts of the galaxy formation and cosmology communities to advance the gal
 axy-halo connection models in the era of large-scale surveys and experime

DESCRIPTION:"The Road to Nuclear Physics from Standard Model" - At the cor
 e of nuclear physics is to make predictions for complex phenomena occurri
 ng in the hottest and densest environments in nature\, to determine how o
 rdinary matter interacts with mysterious dark matter or other new particl
 es\, and to reveal any violation of fundamental symmetries of nature usin
 g nuclear targets. To achieve an unprecedented precision in these questio
 ns\, the field has gradually started to eliminate its reliance on phenome
 nological models\, and has entered an era when the underlying interaction
 s are set to those in the Standard Model of particle physics. Light nucle
 ar systems can now emerge directly from quark and gluon degrees of freedo
 m and with only quantum chromodynamics (QCD) interactions in play\, using
  the numerical method of lattice QCD. Few-body observable\, such as few-h
 adron interactions and scattering amplitudes\, as well as transition ampl
 itudes and reaction rates\, have been the focus of this vastly growing fi
 eld. Once obtained from QCD and matched to effective field theories\, the
 se determinations can advance and improve nuclear many-body calculations 
 of exceedingly more complex systems. This talk is a brief introduction to
  this program and its goals\, with a focus on a few examples that demonst
 rate the roadmap from the Standard Model to nuclear physics. Faculty host

DESCRIPTION:"Exploring the Universe with gravitational waves" - Large-scal
 e interferometric detectors including LIGO and Virgo sense gravitational 
 waves\; minuscule fluctuations in space-time from the most extreme phenom
 ena in the Universe. The first detection of gravitational waves from a bi
 nary black hole merger by LIGO in 2015 was recently awarded a Nobel Prize
 \, and the 2017 detection of gravitational waves by LIGO and Virgo in con
 cert with an associated electromagnetic counterpart was a breakthrough in
  multi-messenger astronomy and provided the first gravitational wave stan
 dard siren measurement of the Hubble constant. Future gravitational wave 
 observations will provide exciting new insight into the expansion of the 
 Universe and other key open questions in astrophysics\, including the dis
 tribution of stellar remnants in the Universe\, the evolution of compact 
 binary systems\, galaxy formation\, and the explosion mechanism of core-c
 ollapse supernovae. I will present new data science and machine learning 
 techniques to address major outstanding challenges in gravitational wave 
 astronomy and enable future multi-messenger discoveries. I will discuss h
 ow the rapidly developing field of gravitational wave astrophysics will s
 hape our understanding of the Universe\, including the growing global int
 erferometer network\, the next generation of terrestrial interferometers\

DESCRIPTION:"The pressure distribution inside the proton" - The origin of 
 quark confinement is one of the most important questions in modern partic
 le and nuclear physics because confinement is at the core of what makes t
 he proton a stable particle and thus provides stability to the Universe. 
 The internal quark structure of the proton is revealed by deeply virtual 
 Compton scattering a process in which electrons are scattered off quarks 
 inside the protons\, which subsequently emit high-energy photons\, which 
 are detected in coincidence with the scattered electrons and recoil proto
 ns. I will report on the first measurement of the pressure distribution e
 xperienced by the quarks in the proton. This work opens up a new area of 
 research on the fundamental gravitational properties of protons\, neutron
 s and nuclei\, which can provide access to their physical radii\, the int
 ernal shear forces acting on the quarks and their pressure distributions.

DESCRIPTION:"Deep Quantum Learning" - Quantum systems can generate pattern
 s in data that can't be generated by any classical system. Can they also 
 recognize and classify patterns that can't be found classically? If class
 ical data can be encoded in quantum states\, then quantum computers can b
 e shown to supply exponential speed ups over classical computers for a va
 riety of standard machine learning techniques\, such as regression\, grad
 ient descent\, and support vector machines. This talk addresses the use o
 f quantum computers to perform deep quantum learning\, in which adaptive 
 methods of quantum measurement and discrimination are used to find patter

DESCRIPTION:"Kirigami-Inspired Metamaterials - from Morphable Structures t
 o Soft Robots" - In the search for materials with new properties\, there 
 have been great advances in recent years aimed at the construction of mec
 hanical systems whose behaviour is governed by structure\, rather than co
 mposition. Through careful design of the material's architecture\, new ma
 terial properties have been demonstrated\, including negative Poisson's r
 atio\, high stiffness-to-weight ratio and mechanical cloaking. While orig
 inally the field focused on achieving unusual (zero or negative) values f
 or familiar mechanical parameters\, more recently it has been shown that 
 non-linearities can be exploited to further extend the design space. In t
 his talk I will focus on kirigami-inspired metamaterials\, which are prod
 uced by introducing arrays of cuts into thin sheets. First\, I will demon
 strate that instabilities triggered under uniaxial tension can be exploit
 ed to create complex 3D patterns and even to guide the formation of perma
 nent folds. Second\, I will show that such non-linear systems can be used
  to designs smart and flexible skins with anisotropic frictional properti
 es that enables a single soft actuator to propel itself. Finally\, I will
  focus on bistable kirigami metamaterials and show that they provide an i
 deal environment for the propagation non-linear waves.   Faculty host: Jo

DESCRIPTION:Algebraic varieties are geometric objects defined by polynomia
 l equations. The minimal model program (MMP) is an ambitious program that
  aims to classify algebraic varieties. According to the MMP\, there are 3
  building blocks: Fano varieties\, Calabi-Yau varieties and varieties of 
 general type which are higher dimensional analogs of Riemann Surfaces of 
 genus 0\,1 or at least 2 respectively. In this talk I will recall the gen
 eral features of the MMP and discuss recent advances in our understanding
  of varieties of general type.

DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled due to Hurricane Dorian.\n\nThe L
 ife and Death of Turbulence\n\nTurbulence is the last great unsolved prob
 lem of classical physics. But there is no consensus on what it would mean
  to actually solve this problem. In this colloquium\, I propose that turb
 ulence is most fruitfully regarded as a problem in non-equilibrium statis
 tical mechanics\, and will show that this perspective explains turbulent 
 drag behavior measured over 80 years\, and makes predictions that have be
 en experimentally tested in 2D turbulent soap films. I will also explain 
 how this perspective is useful in understanding the laminar-turbulence tr
 ansition\, establishing it as a non-equilibrium phase transition whose cr
 itical behavior has been predicted and tested experimentally.  This work 
 connects transitional turbulence with statistical mechanics and renormali
 zation group theory\, high energy hadron scattering\, the statistics of e
 xtreme events\, and even population biology.\n\nFaculty host: Michael Rub

 re one of the leading candidates for realizing practically useful quantum
  computers. Introduction of advanced integration technologies to this tra
 ditional atomic physics research has provided an opportunity to convert a
  complex atomic physics experiment into a stand-alone programmable quantu

 logies that changes the perception of a trapped ion system as a scalable 
 quantum computer\, and the concrete progress made to date in this endeavo

 s can make a practical contribution to the computational frontier\, using

 ectric transportation\, wind and solar electricity\, energy management fo

 e to imperfections in controls and unwanted interactions with the environ
 ment.  Quantum error correction is an algorithmic method for preserving t
 he coherence of a subspace of a larger quantum system.  In this talk\, I 
 will describe the basic principles of quantum error correction\, the chal
 lenge of making quantum circuits that are fault-tolerant\, and new ideas 
 for designing quantum error correction methods that do not map directly t

DESCRIPTION:Let X be a smooth affine algebraic variety over the field C of
  complex numbers (that is\, a smooth submanifold of C^n which can be desc
 ribed as the solutionsto a system of polynomial equations). Grothendieck 
 showed that the de Rham cohomology of X can be computed using only polyno
 mial differential forms on X. This observation was the starting point for
  the theory of algebraic de Rham cohomology\, which has proved to be a us
 eful invariant for algebraic varieties over an arbitrary field k. In the 
 case where k has positive characteristic\, Berthelot and Grothendieck int
 roduced a refinement of algebraic de Rham cohomology\, known as crystalli
 ne cohomology. In this talk\, I will review the theory of algebraic de Rh
 am cohomology and sketch an elementary construction of crystalline cohomo
 logy\, based on recent joint work with Bhargav Bhatt and Akhil Mathew.

DESCRIPTION:"The Life and Death of Turbulence"\n\nTurbulence is the last g
 reat unsolved problem of classical physics. But there is no consensus on 
 what it would mean to actually solve this problem. In this colloquium\, I
  propose that turbulence is most fruitfully regarded as a problem in non-
 equilibrium statistical mechanics\, and will show that this perspective e
 xplains turbulent drag behavior measured over 80 years\, and makes predic
 tions that have been experimentally tested in 2D turbulent soap films. I 
 will also explain how this perspective is useful in understanding the lam
 inar-turbulence transition\, establishing it as a non-equilibrium phase t
 ransition whose critical behavior has been predicted and tested experimen
 tally.  This work connects transitional turbulence with statistical mecha
 nics and renormalization group theory\, high energy hadron scattering\, t
 he statistics of extreme events\, and even population biology.\n\nFaculty

 "\n\nMuch of our success in precision calculations within the Standard Mo
 del of particle physics rely on the concept of effective field theories\,
  which allow to focus calculations on the distance scales relevant for a 
 given calculation. The journey therefore starts by introducing the genera
 l concept of effective field theories. I will provide several examples of
  how such effective field theories are used nowadays to make precise pred
 ictions for observables at the Large Hadron Collider. I will then continu
 e our trip by explaining how effective field theories help predict observ
 ables involving a large number of final state particles\, using tools com
 monly referred to as parton showers. The final destination will be the my
 sterious land of quantum computing and quantum algorithms\, where I will 
 introduce the audience to new ideas for making predictions for high multi

  Colliders"\n\nMaria Goeppert-Mayer spent her career thinking about the l
 ifetimes of things: nuclei\, elements\, atoms\, isotopes. She used data t
 aken with a cyclotron in order to discover the nuclear shell model. Since
  then particle accelerators have come a long way. Many of the big discove
 ries in the 20th century involved one kind of accelerator of another. Pre
 sently we are sitting at the highest center of mass energy collider of al
 l time\, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN\, ringing in at  13 TeV. A num
 ber of key advances in accelerator physics were involved. At the LHC  we 
 are interested in the lifetimes of particles\, potentially new particles 
 not described by the Standard Model. And we are designing the colliders o

 transition in thorium-229"\n\nIn 1976 Kroger and Reich established the ex
 istence of a low-lying\, nuclear excited state in Th-229 that appeared to
  be accessible with laser technology. This discovery touched off a flurry
  of activity to perform laser spectroscopy of a nucleus\, as a laser-acce
 ssible nuclear transition would provide a host of new technological and s
 cientific applications. Despite this significant activity\, to date\, no 
 one has succeeded in actually performing laser spectroscopy on the nucleu
 s. I will discuss our efforts to do exactly this.\n\nPhoto caption: The f

  be able to do if we could build electronically integrated machines the a
 t a scale of 50 microns? At this scale\, semiconductor devices are small 
 enough that we could put the computational power of the spaceship Voyager
  onto a machine that could be injected into the body. Such robots could h
 ave on board detectors\, power sources\, and processors that enable them 
 to sense\, interact\, and control their local environment. In this talk I
  will describe several cutting edge technologies we are developing to ach

 ecision control and manipulation of quantum systems\,  progress is being 
 made in harnessing quantum complexity to empower a new framework of compu
 ting.  With Hilbert spaces growing exponentially and a natural representa
 tion of entanglement\, such systems are viable pathways to a quantitative
 ly deeper understanding of the non perturbative phenomena of highly corre
 lated systems from QCD to quantum materials.  With this program I will di

DESCRIPTION:"The Proton Remains Puzzling"\n\nNucleons (protons and neutron
 s) are the building blocks of atomic nuclei\, and are responsible for mor
 e than 99% of the visible matter in the universe. Despite decades of effo
 rts in studying its internal structure\, there are still a number of puzz
 les surrounding the proton such as its spin\, mass\, and charge radius. T
 he proton charge radius puzzle developed about ten years ago refers to a 
 5-7 sigma discrepancy between the ultrahigh precise values of the proton 
 charge radius determined from muonic hydrogen Lamb shift measurements and
  the CODATA values compiled from electron-proton scattering experiments a
 nd hydrogen spectroscopy measurements. In this talk I will briefly introd
 uce the proton spin and mass puzzles first. I will then focus on the prot
 on charge radius puzzle\, the latest experimental results\, and especiall
 y the PRad experiment at Jefferson Lab and its result.\n\nFaculty host: J

DESCRIPTION:An improvement of Liouville's theorem for discrete harmonic fu
 nctions\n\nThe classical Liouville theorem tells us that a bounded harmon
 ic \nfunction on the plane is a constant. At the same time for any \n(arb
 itrarily small) angle on the plane there exist non-constant \nharmonic fu
 nctions that are bounded everywhere outside this angle.\nThe situation is
  completely different for discrete harmonic functions \non the standard s
 quare lattices. The following strong version of the \nLiouville theorem h
 olds on the two-dimensional lattice. If a discrete \nharmonic function is
  bounded on 99% of the lattice then it is constant.\nA simple counter-exa
 mple shows that in higher dimensions such \nimprovement is no longer true
 .\n\nThe talk is  based on a joint work with L. Buhovsky\, A. Logunov and

 nce. **\n\n"Advances in the Current and Future X-ray Sources"\n\nX-rays f
 rom synchrotron radiation (SR) and free-electron lasers (FELs) have huge 
 impact in the recent advances in various areas of science and technology.
  Having gone through several generations of development\, research facili
 ties based on SR are currently at the 4th generation stage\, thus referre
 d to as 4GSRs. A 4GSR employs spontaneous radiation from undulators insta
 lled in an "ultimate storage ring"\, in which the phase space area of the
  electron beam is "diffraction limited" in the soft X-ray spectrum. In an
  FEL\, an electron bunch can exchange energy with a radiation pulse co-pr
 opagating in an undulator\, giving rise to radiation amplification. With 
 the advance in the linac technology for bright electron beams\, an X-ray 
 FEL (XFEL) became feasible in which the spontaneous emission is self-ampl
 ified in a long undulator by a factor about a million\, giving rise to in
 tense\, quasi-coherent X-ray pulse. The brightness of this "self-amplifie
 d-spontaneous emission" (SASE) is about the same as that of 4GSRs. We are
  about to witness the advent of XFELs driven by super-conducting RF (SCRF
 ) linacs with a repetition rate higher by three to four orders of magnitu
 des than that from Cu-linacs\, and proportionally higher X-ray brightness

 How physicists can help"\n\nMost of us thought that\, with the end of the
  Cold War and the rise of democracy in Russia\, the danger of a nuclear A
 rmageddon had receded and what remained was to pilot a glide path to very
  a low level of de-alerted nuclear weaponry and strengthen the nuclear no
 nproliferation regime.  That did not happen. NATO expanded east\, democra
 cy faded in Russia\, Russia invaded Ukraine\, nuclear reductions halted\,
  the US has exited two of the three bilateral nuclear arms control agreem
 ents it has with Russia and seems on track to exit the third\, and we are
  in the midst of nuclear proliferation crises with Iran and North Korea.\
 n\nGiven this situation\, the American Physical Society has funded a proj
 ect to get physicists engaged with nuclear threat reduction again.  The p
 urpose of this talk is to provide an overview of the current situation an
 d the various proposals that are being debated to mitigate the dangers. T
 he hope is that a few physicists in the audience will consider educating 
 themselves further and then become involved in helping to educate their m
 embers of Congress. The speaker will be available for discussions before 
 or after with anyone who might be interested.\n\nFaculty host: Phil Barbe

DESCRIPTION:** This event had been canceled. **\n\n"Topological Aspects of
  Electromagnetic Response in Metals"\n\nThis talk begins with an introduc
 tion to how topological phases of electrons can generate quantized respon
 ses and emergent particles such as Weyl fermions.  Various insulating top
 ological phases are known to realize unique electromagnetic couplings suc
 h as the quantum Hall effect and "axion electrodynamics"\, and understand
 ing this led to an improved understanding of polarization and magnetoelec
 tricity in all materials. The main new results are on how the recently di
 scovered topological Weyl and Dirac semimetals can show unique electromag
 netic responses. We argue that in linear response the main observable eff
 ect solves an old problem via the orbital moment of Bloch electrons\, and
  how in nonlinear optics there should be a novel approximately quantized 
 photocurrent effect. This photocurrent effect should have magnitude deter
 mined by fundamental constants\, namely the cube of electric charge\, div
 ided by the square of Planck's constant\, and may have been observed in r
