DESCRIPTION:"Fly in Power" follows Charlotte\, a Korean massage worker and
core organizer of Red Canary Song (RCS). Through her story\, we learn ho
w the incarceration system is pitted against Asian migrant women and thei
 r survival. Other RCS members\, including Khokhoi\, a young body worker\,
and Professor Elena Shih\, Brown University\, share powerful insights th
at debunk the myths of sex trafficking. \n\n"Fly in Power" is a glimpse i
nto the intimate spaces that not only connect these workers\, but is also
a testament to the global advocacy of women's rights to work and thrive.
This is the first film to center the narrative of an Asian massage worke
r in her own words\, with her own agency of storytelling and editing. The
intention of "Fly in Power" is to honor their practices of care\, autono
my\, and survival and to raise awareness of the oppressive systems that f
ace us all.\n\nThis film has been produced entirely by women\, non-binary
\, trans and queers of the Asian diaspora. More than half of the producti
on team are former or current sex workers.\n\nThe screening will be follo
wed by a Q&A with members of Red Canary Song\, a grassroots organization
of Asian and Migrant sex workers and massage workers\, organizing transna
 tionally.

y Taylor (Duke Romance Studies) will lead a Maya K'iche language table in
the venue's lobby. \n\nRicardo Flores Carrasco (Lima\, Perú)\, known pr
ofessionally as Liberato Kani\, is a Quechua-language hip-hop singer and
songwriter. Through his work\, he is also a cultural and Indigenous Langu
ages activist. In 2016\, he presented his first album\, Rimay Pueblo\, wh
ich was internationally acclaimed\, although it also faced criticism due
to the fusion of traditional Andean sounds with contemporary urban rhythm
 s. He performed at major arenas in Peru\, including Teatro Nacional\, Lim
a Book Fair\, and Afuera Fest. In 2018\, he made an international tour ca
lled Pawaspay (taking off in Quechua)\, where he visited Chile\, Spain\,
Cuba\, and the United States. \n\nOpening the concert will be Mario "Kam
ikal" Yaxon Guarcax. He grew up in Chimaltenango\, Guatemala\, where he f
ormed a rap group with his older brother. The pair have become known for
their lyrics that speak to themes of social justice lyrics in their indig
enous language\, Maya Kaqchikel. Mario came to the United States 6 years
ago\, fleeing death threats from former paramilitary soldiers in his comm
unity who disapprove of the brother's counter-culture music and social ju
stice activism. Now in North Carolina\, Mario works in roofing by day and
writes lyrics and mixes beats by night. \n\nWith the additional partici
pation of Danzante De Tijeras\, Yana Paqcha de Andamarca (Jorge Luis Asto
vilca Cupe). Yana Paqcha es Artista y Coordinador en eventos culturales d
el Grupo Cultural "Sonidos Andinos" de la Danza De Las Tijeras del Perú.

DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Yun HWANG began making a documentary about tidal fla
ts in the Saemanggeum estuary\, on the West coast of South Korea. Her wor
k came to a halt in 2006 with the completion of the Saemangeum seawall\,
the world's longest man-made dyke and the first component of a massive la
nd reclamation effort.\n\nTen years later\, Hwang moved to Gunsan and lea
rned about the Saemangeum Citizens Ecological Group\, a local civic organ
ization that has conducted ecological surveys in the estuary for over 20
years. Sura\, located in Gunsan\, North Jeolla province\, is the last rem
aining tidal flat in the Saemangeum estuary. Hwang was surprised to disco
ver the area is teeming with fauna and resumed work on her documentary\,
chronicling the beauty of this endangered space.\n\nFrom the director:\nT
his film is the story of citizens who do not yield to the violence of the
government project and resist by the act of recording. This is also abou
t the "memories" of people who cannot forget the beauty. The moment I hea
rd the story of a man who can't forget the group dance of the shorebirds\
, the wonder\, the longing\, and sense of loss he must have felt overwhel
med me. That's what drove me to make this film for 7 years. In this world
where the beauty to remember is gradually disappearing\, we record today
\, believing in the power of memories and records.\n\n"This film is a lov
e song sung by people who love the beautiful tidal flat. The ending credi
ts include the names of various living creatures in Sura\, such as Saunde
rs's gulls and little terns. Sura residents in the film include a mother
bird protecting her baby in the strong wind. The mother bird's love may b
e no different from that of our parents." - Kim Sun-ae\, The Korea Times\
n\nExpert panel:\nImmediately following the film screening\, panelists wi
ll discuss the ecological impacts of large-scale development projects:\n\

DESCRIPTION:Ilan Troen comes to the Duke Center for Jewish Studies as a sp
ecial guest of the Lerner Chair and the Provost's Initiative on the Middl
e East in this discussion on his recent book\, "Israel/Palestine in World
Religions: Whose Promised Land?"\nPlease register at https://duke.qualtr
 ics.com/jfe/form/SV_3mBHdseX1EZZmqG\n\nThe struggle over Israel/Palestine
is not just another contest by competing nationalisms or an instance of
geopolitical competition. It is also about control of sacred territory th
at involves local Jews\, Muslims\, and Christians as well as worldwide fa
ith communities\, each with their own interests and stake in what transpi
res. Troen's examination of this complex subject presents the multiple p
ositions within the great monotheistic traditions. It demonstrates that t
he secular discourses in the public square concerning ownership privilege
s\, historical precedence\, political rights\, and justice that have alle
gedly replaced religious claims actually coexist with\, and often complem
ent\, the theological\; all while considering the century-long tangle of
secular and theological debates about Israel's legitimacy.\n\nIlan Troen
is emeritus of both the Stoll Family Chair in Israel Studies (Brandeis\,
2017)\, and the Lopin Chair of Modern History (Ben-Gurion University\, 20
07). He is the immediate past president of the Association for Israel Stu
dies. He has served as dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Ben-Guri
on University of the Negev and as director of the Ben-Gurion Research Ins
titute and Archives in Sede Boker\, Israel. He has authored or edited nu
merous books in American\, Jewish and Israeli history. He is also the fou
nding editor of "Israel Studies" (Indiana University Press)\, the leading
journal in this new field and has co-edited the "Schusterman Series in I
srael Studies" which has been superseded by the Indiana University Press
series on Perspectives on Israel Studies.\n\nHis publications include "Je
wish Centers and Peripheries: European Jewry Between America and Israel 5
0 Years after World War II" (1998)\; "The Americanization of Israel" (200
1)\, with Glenda Abramson\; "Divergent Jewish Cultures: Israel and Americ

DESCRIPTION:About the film:\nWinner of the 2023 Suphannahong National Film
Award for best documentary.\n\nThe neighborhood of Sam Yan in Bangkok\,
Thailand\, is mostly filled with new shopping malls and condominiums. The
Chao Mae Thap Thim (Mazu) Shrine\, long cherished by neighborhood reside
nts and members of the local community\, is the only holdout of the Prope
rty Management of Chulalongkorn University's (PMCU) redevelopment project
.\n\nIn June 2020\, an order came from PMCU to relocate the shrine. The d
eveloper's plan was to construct a 1\,800-unit residential building for u
niversity staff and a dormitory for students. PMCU also sued the shrine's
administrator for 4.6 billion baht. Residents and students protested the
plan to dismantle their community's shrine\, leading to the hashtag #sav
eThapthimShrine and a movement to protect the last breath of the historic
area.\n\nAbout the speakers:\nNetiwit Chotiphatphaisal is a Thai activis
 t\, editor-in-chief\, translator\, writer\, and the country's first moder
 n conscientious objector. In 2022\, he was ordained as a Buddhist monk\;
he subsequently chose to disrobe and return to secular life in order to u
phold his principled opposition to military conscription as a civilian wi
thout the privilege of religious exemption. Without the shield of the tem
ple\, he risks a prison sentence of up to 3 years. Alongside his universi
ty studies\, Netiwit works as an advocate for democracy\, human rights\,
and the Milk Tea Alliance. His fields of interest include student activis
m\, Milk Tea Alliances\, Thai politics\, social movements\, urban activis
m\, religious as well as secular and engaged Buddhism\, political liberal
ism\, Chinese politics and history\, and philosophy\, particularly the wo
rk of Isaiah Berlin.\n\nSettanant Thanakitkoses is a managing editor at S
amnak Nisit Sam Yan Student Publishing House (Sam Yan Press). He is a gra
duate of Chulalongkorn University's faculty of arts with a Spanish major
and philosophy minor. Settanant was also the president of academic affair
s of the student government at Chulalongkorn University\, and served as t
he first director of the Department of Humanitarian and Human Rights Affa
irs of Student Government\, Chulalongkorn University. Settanant exhibits
high passion and curiosity in philosophy\, politics and religions\, espec
ially Hinayana Buddhism\, while advocating for "effective altruism" throu
gh multiple social movement activities and actively taking part in proofr

.\n\nAbout the film:\n"The Palestine Exception tells the story of the lar
gest anti-war movement since the 1970s as students\, faculty and staff on
campuses across the US demand divestment from companies doing business w
ith Israel and an end to the war on Gaza. The documentary features divers
e academics explaining the history of censorship around criticism of Isra
el and Zionism.\n\nAfter years of right-wing assaults on higher education
\, attacks took a new form in 2023 and 2024 that has been described as th
e new McCarthyism. As students across the country organize protests agai
nst Israel's war on Gaza\, decades-long taboos in academia around critici
sm of Israel-the "Palestine exception"-are shattered. This film features
professors and students as they join calls for a ceasefire and divestment
from companies that do business with Israel and face waves of crackdown
from administrators\, the media\, the police and politicians. Scholars f
rom diverse disciplines explain what is at stake in these protests and wh
y so many young people identify with the Palestinian cause. The documenta
ry unfolds as a story of college campuses as sites of both rebellion and
repression\, places where personal and collective histories converge in u
nexpected ways."\n\nFeaturing interviews with academics including Ellen S
 chrecker\, Jennifer Gaboury\, Judith Butler\, Premilla Nadasen\, Saree Ma
kdisi\, Ted Khoury\, and Sophie Smith (Duke PhD in Literature).\n\nMore i

 theory.org/schedule \n\nKeynotes by Michael Denning\, Jane Gaines\, Achil
le Mbembe\, Toril Moi\, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak\n\nFredric Jameson
(1934-2024) insisted on "imagining a future which might be radically and
constitutionally other." The urgency of this task rested on his understa
nding of Critical Theory "as a way of keeping the negative alive in a per
iod in which praxis\, the unity of the negative and the positive\, itself
seems suspended." Over the years\, Critical Theory has received scholarl
y and popular attention\; it has simultaneously been pronounced dead and
an enduring threat. We invite scholars\, including students\, to join us
at Duke University for a three-day celebration of Fredric Jameson's endur
ing legacy-and to keep imagining\, with him\, the future of Critical Theo
ry.\n\nThe conference is organized by Duke's Graduate Program in Literatu
re\, where Jameson taught for forty years\, and the John Hope Franklin Hu
manities Institute. We acknowledge the generous support of the Holberg Pr
ize Committee\, Norway.\n\nRegistration is now open.\n\nWe invite scholar
s\, students\, and members of the public to join us in Durham for three d
ays of conversation\, reflection\, and debate.

DESCRIPTION:Running time: 90 minutes\nTickets: FREE! First-come\, first-se
rved\nFormal talkback session following the film\n\nJoin us in celebratin
 g the 30th Anniversary of ADF's Screen Dance Festival with a documentary\
, Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters. \n\nThe film w
ill be followed by a Q&A with director\, ADF alum\, and former member of
 the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company\, Rosalynde LeBlanc\, Bill T. Jones\
, and two NC educators and former members of the company\, Andrea E. Wood
s Valdés\, Chair of Duke Dance Program\, and Janet Lilly\, Professor of D
ance at the University of North Carolina\, Greensboro.\n\nCan You Bring I
t: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters brings to life the creative proc
ess that culminated in choreographer-dancer-director Bill T. Jones's tour
de force ballet D-Man in the Waters\, one of the most important works of
art to come out of the AIDS crisis. In 1989\, D-Man in the Waters gave p
hysical manifestation to the fear\, anger\, grief\, and hope for salvatio
n that the emerging Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company felt as they were em
battled by the AIDS epidemic. As a group of young dancers in the present
re-interpret the work\, they deepen their understanding of its power-expl
oring what is at stake in their own personal lives in order to commit and
perform it successfully. Through an extraordinary collage of interviews\
, archival material\, and uniquely powerful cinematography\, this lyrical
documentary uses the story of this iconic dance to illustrate the power
of art and the triumph of the human spirit. Winner of a 2024 Peabody Awar
 d!
