DESCRIPTION:The Amazon Lab at FHI & Screen/Society present:\n\nThe Amazon
Film Series #3: Three Short Films by Ana Vaz\n\nAna Vaz is a Brazilian ar
tist & filmmaker whose films\, installations & performances speculate upo
n the relationships between myth & history\, self & other through a cosmo
logy of references & perspectives. Assemblages of found & shot materials\
, her films combine ethnography & speculation in exploring the f(r)iction
s imprinted upon cultivated & savage environments. \n\nFilms to be screen
 ed:\n\n"APIYEMIYEKI?" (2020\, 29 min\, Brazil\, France\, Netherlands\, Po
 rtugal\, Portuguese w/ English subtitles\, DCP)\n\nAn archive of drawings
made by the Waimiri-Atroari during their first literacy experience build
a collective visual memory from their learning process\, perspective and
territory while documenting their encounter with "civilised man".\n\n"Th
 e Age of Stone" (2019\, 29 min\, Brazil\, France\, Portuguese w/ English
subtitles\, DCP)\n\nA voyage into the far west of Brazil leads us to a mo
numental structure - petrified at the centre of the savannah. Inspired by
the epic construction of the city of Brasília\, the film uses this histo
ry to imagine it otherwise. Through the geological traces that lead us to
this monument\, the film unearths a history of exploration\, prophecy an
 d myth.\n\n"There is Land!" (2016\, 13 min\, Brazil\, France\, Portuguese
  w/ English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n"An encounter\, a hunt\, a diachronic tal
e of looking and becoming. As in a game\, as in a chase\, the film errs b
etween character and land\, land and character\, predator and prey." -- A
na Vaz\n\nCOVID-19 Info: Masking is optional\; fully vaccinated status st
rongly encouraged. (See our website for details.)

DESCRIPTION:Charlotte tells the story of the artist Charlotte Salomon (191
7-1943)\, whose collection of paintings\, called "Life? Or Theater?\," ca
n be considered one of the first graphic novels. The autobiographical art
works tell of moments of joy and first loves as well as extreme distress
while living and studying in Berlin in the Thirties\, and later fleeing f
rom the Nazis to the South of France. Charlotte Salomon died on October 1
0\, 1943\, five months pregnant\, the day she arrived at Auschwitz.\n\nTh
e animated feature is a celebration of a life cut short and with great at
tention to detail\, inspired by Charlotte's own paintings\, tells the sto
ry of this extraordinary artist. From the death of her mother to an opera
performance by her stepmother in 1933\, interrupted by Nazis storming in
\, to meeting future benefactor Otilie Moore in Rome\, to being accepted\
, then expelled from the Art Academy to crushes and family revelations -
we see how she manifests her belief that "happiness is much deeper than s
uffering." The light changes when she travels to the Côte d'Azur to take
care of her grandparents\, but the dangers remain and she has to make the
most difficult decisions. 2021\, 1hour and 32 min runtime. Directed by
Éric Warin and Tahir Rana.\n\nCo-sponsored by Asian & Middle Eastern Stu
dies\, Art\, Art History and Visual Arts\; Cinematic Arts

DESCRIPTION:Film screening:\n \n"Avant L'effondrement du Mont Blanc" ("Bef
 ore the Collapse of Mont Blanc")\n(Jacques Perconte\, 2022\, 16 min\, Fra
nce\, DCP)\n\nDedicated to the eponymous Mont Blanc massif\, the film is
accompanied by the director Jacques Perconte's burning question of whethe
r we happen to be the very last people who will ever have the chance to s
ee Mont Blanc's summit. It's all in response to the earth's rising temper
atures\, which is causing glaciers to melt at a rapid pace. Perconte's wo
rk is unique in the sense that in revealing the inner strength and pulsat
ion of what is seen on screen\, he combines a plasticity that follows on
the pictorial tradition inherited from painting and experimental film\, w
ith documentary film rooted in a specific space.\n\n"In his works\, Perco
nte achieves a synthesis in which he finds a response to dialectical tens
ion between the modern concept of techne and physis. These digits of the
algorithm are part of the artistic environment\, which is tense but also
 balanced at the same time." - J. Sarmiento Hinojosa\n \n"Thing"\n(Anouk D
 e Clercq\, 2013\, 18 min\, Belgium\, Digital)\n\nAn architect talks about
the city he built. We travel through his virtual memory to a boundless\,
imaginary space. About a place's memory\, about fictitious buildings and
the continuation of the past in today's urban patterns. The architect's
ideas do not take on a particular form\, but that does not make them less
appealing. Thing reveals an unreliable\, yet beautiful reality.\n\n"The
technology used in 'Thing' does not allow talking about a camera since it
is made of 3D scans of urban spaces. Instead\, we could talk about a poi
 nt of view\, a gaze\, or even a body (that wanders). Thereby\, a tension
is generated between the mechanical register of space and its embodied pe
rception. A tension or overlap between two sensing interfaces: the scanne
r and the body\, without any need to determine whether there is a desire
to reproduce the mode of sensing of the latter through the technology of
the former." - Anna Manubens\n\nThis curated screening is related to Cont
emporary Epistemologies of Moving Images: Graphs\, Diagrams and Topograph
ies\, a conference at Duke University.\n\nCOVID-19 Info: Masking is optio
nal\; fully vaccinated status strongly encouraged. (See our website for d
 etails.)

DESCRIPTION:Film screening:\n\n"Aftersun"\n(Charlotte Wells\, 2022\, 102 m
 in\, USA/UK\, English\, DCP)\n\nIn Charlotte Wells' superb and searingly
emotional debut film\, Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private mela
ncholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. Memori
es real and imagined fill the gaps between miniDV footage as she tries to
reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't.\n\n-- Winner of t
he French Touch Jury Prize at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival\, and the 202
3 National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Director\n\n"'Aftersun'
is about what it means to move through life-falling in love\, raising ch
ildren\, making art-knowing that there are ghosts one will never shake bu
t forever carry\, ghosts so real that we can close our eyes and see them
there before us\, unchanging figments who elude our embrace." - ReverseSh
ot\n\n"Wells's movie ripples and shimmers like a swimming pool of mystery
\; the way Wells captures mood and moment\, never labouring the point or
forcing the pace... With remarkable confidence\, she just lets her movie
unspool naturally\, like a haunting and deceptively simple short story."
 - The Guardian\n\n"Rare and special is a film capable of summoning this m

DESCRIPTION:Film screening:\n\n"A Tale of Summer"\n(Éric Rohmer\, 1996\, 1
 13 min\, France\, French w/ English subtitles\, DCP)\n\nBased on events f
rom Rohmer's youth\, "A Tale of Summer" follows amateur musician Gaspard
(Melvil Poupard) to a seaside resort in Dinard\, on the coast of Brittany
. There three women (Amanda Langlet\, Gwenaëlle Simon\, Aurelia Nolin) ea
ch offer the possibility of romance\, but Gaspard's inability to commit t
o just one places all of his chances at love in jeopardy. "Summer" featur
es Rohmer's wistful observations on indecisiveness and the fickle nature
of desire\, as brought to life by a talented young cast in a picturesque
setting.\n\n"Despite the bright summer sun and the inviting expanses\, Ro
hmer's film is tight and airless\; though it's set in the present day\, t
he febrile formalities evoke a vanished age-that of the director's own yo

deflect passion." - Richard Brody\n\n"Rohmer is brilliant at capturing th

DESCRIPTION:Film screening:\n\n"No Bears"\n(Jafar Panahi\, 2022\, 107 min\
 , Iran\, Farsi with English subtitles\, DCP)\n\nOne of the world's great
cinematic artists\, Jafar Panahi has been carefully crafting self-reflexi
ve works about artistic\, personal\, and political freedom for the past t
hree decades\, despite his oppression at the hands of the Iranian governm
ent. In "No Bears"\, as in many of his recent titles\, Panahi plays a fic
tionalized version of himself\, in this case relocated to a rural border
town to remotely direct a new film in nearby Turkey - the story of which
comes to sharply mirror disturbing events that begin to occur around him.
\n\n"In the auteur's latest masterpiece\, every moment is suffused with n
ot just purpose\, but captivating beauty." - Washington Post \n\n"A testa
ment to the power of film to challenge a culture of blind obedience\, and
  also to Panahi's efforts\, as a dissident filmmaker\, to build a cinema
of defiance against the propagandist film apparatus of the state." - Jams
heed Akrami\, Film Comment\n\n"Panahi\, whose courage and honesty are bey
ond doubt\, has made a movie that calls those very qualities into questio
n\, a movie about its own ethical limits and aesthetic contradictions." -

 min\, Japan\, Japanese with English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n--New 4K Restorat
ion!\n\nTyphoon Club is widely regarded as the seminal film of director S
hinji Somai's career. A work of raw\, elemental power\, it follows an ens
emble of junior high students in a provincial town\, beset by a summer-y
malaise as a typhoon looms. When the storm makes landfall\, the teens fin
d themselves holed up in their school unsupervised\, while another classm
ate (Yuki Kudo) disappears alone on a harrowing trek to the big city. Set
adrift in a world suddenly unmoored\, the students let loose their pent-
up angst and burgeoning passions in a series of propulsive\, phantasmic s
cenes-part apocalypse\, part utopia-as the deluge rages on into the night
. The 10th best Japanese film of all time\, according to Japan's Kinema J

ma... For anyone who wants to see a movie that has the power to change an
d sustain your life\, I urge you to see Somai's films." - Ryusuke Hamaguc
hi\, director of Drive My Car\n\n"Maybe the last great master of Japanese
film history." - Kiyoshi Kurosawa\, director of Cure\n\n"Shinji Somai is

DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed Israeli director\, Ran Tal\, comes to Duke to screen
"1341 Frames of Love and War" (2022\, run time 1 hour 29 min) for the Is
raeli Documentary Series. A public reception will precede the screening
at 6:30PM in the Ruby Lounge.\n\nFor a year and a half\, the acclaimed ph
oto-journalist Micha Bar-Am allowed director Ran Tal to enter his vast ar
chive of negatives. Composed entirely of images that Bar-Am took over mor
e than fifty years\, 1341 FRAMES OF LOVE AND WAR reveals the enormous pri
ce that comes along with documenting atrocities and wars. \n1341 FRAMES
provides an intimate portrait of an artist and a meditation on memory\, v
iolence and identity. Beyond this narrative tribute\, the film offers a u
nique cinematic\, visual\, and sensory experience that explores how to im
bue still photography with movement on the one hand\, while freezing cine
matic movement to distill meaning and emotion on the other. It is a compl
ex love letter to the power\, beauty and horror of photographic imagery.\
n\nFrom an archive of over half a million negatives taken by Israel's mos
t celebrated war photographer Micha Bar-Am\, 1341 FRAMES reveals an epic
journey of self-doubt and questioning through the camera.\n\n1341 FRAMES
it a complex love letter to the power\, beauty and horror of photographic

DESCRIPTION:Sama Alshaibi (b. 1973\, Iraq) is an artist working between ph
otography\, video\, and installation. Her practice explores the notion of
aftermath-the fragmentation and dispossession that violates the individu
al and a community following the destruction of their social\, natural\,
and built environment. In her photographs and videos\, Alshaibi often use
s her own body as both subject and medium\, a staging site for encounters
\, peripheries\, and refuge\, even when carrying the markings of war and
dislocation. In several of her projects\, Alshaibi complicates the coding
of the Arab female figure found in the image history of photographs and
moving images.\n\nAlshaibi is a Guggenheim Fellow\, the 2023 Art Matters'
Betty Parsons Fellow\, the 2021 recipient of the Phoenix Art Museum's Ar
lene and Morton Scult Artist Award and the 2019 Artpace International Art
ist-in-Residence. Her work has been exhibited in numerous biennales and m

Crystal Bridges Museum of Art\, AK)\, the Museum of Modern Art (New York)
\, Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto)\, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Barjee

out a link to anything else in the film\, but it may be some of the most
fun you'll have being scared at the movies." - IGN

 "The Exorcist" - Director's Cut\n(William Friedkin\, 1973\, 133 min\, USA
 \, DCP)\n\nNew 4K Restoration!\n\nConsidered by many the greatest horror
film ever made\, this masterful cinematic nightmare of demonic possession
returns to the big screen in celebration of its 50th anniversary\, and i
n tribute to its late director\, William Friedkin.\n\nThe life of the Mac
Neil family is torn apart when 12-year-old daughter Regan (Linda Blair) b
egins to act disturbingly erratic and violent. Distraught as her beloved
child becomes the subject of a harrowing supernatural possession\, matria
rch Chris (Ellen Burstyn) turns to the help of two priests to help rid he
r of her demonic spell. The young\, faith-tested Father Carras (Jason Mil
ler) and elderly archeologist Father Lankester Merrin (Max Von Sydow) pre
pare for an exorcism to vanquish the unholy evil.\n\nA timeless - often d
 eemed cursed - horror masterpiece\, the late\, great William Friedkin's s
eminal adaptation of William Peter Blatty's "The Exorcist" remains every
bit as chilling now as its first release in 1973.

  late periods.\n\n 2:00PM: "Contempt" (1963\, 103 min)\n 3:45PM: "Trail

New 4K Restoration!\n\nJean-Luc Godard's subversive foray into commercial
filmmaking is a star-studded Cinemascope epic. "Contempt" ("Le Mépris")
stars Michel Piccoli as a screenwriter torn between the demands of a prou
d European director (played by legendary director Fritz Lang)\, a crude a
nd arrogant American producer (Jack Palance)\, and his disillusioned wife
(Brigitte Bardot)\, as he attempts to doctor the script for a new film v
ersion of The Odyssey. Based on Alberto Moravia's novel "Il Disprezzo"\,
"Contempt" is a brilliant study of marital breakdown\, artistic compromis
e\, and the cinematic process.\n\n"Trailer of a Film That Will Never Exis
 t: Phony Wars"\n(Jean-Luc Godard\, 2023\, 20 min\, France\, DCP)\n\nAt th
e time of his death in September 2022\, Jean-Luc Godard had been in the m
idst of planning another feature\, an adaptation of Belgian author Charle
s Plisnier's 1937 novel "Faux Passports". Though the film was never produ
ced\, the intricate and beautiful "trailer" that Godard put together in p
reparation now stands as his final work\, a complex collage of history\,
politics\, and cinema constructed of paper and glue\, paintings and photo
graphs\, sound and silence. Godard often transformed his synopses into ae
sthetic programs. His swan song follows in this tradition and will remain
as the ultimate gesture of cinema\, which he accompanies with the follow
ing text: "Rejecting the billions of alphabetic diktats to liberate the i
ncessant metamorphoses and metaphors of a necessary and true language by
returning to the locations of past film shoots\, while keeping track of m
odern times."\n\n-- Official Selection: Cannes Film Festival\, Toronto In

ist's relationship with his model Ranuccio (Sean Bean)\, the film explore
s a vicious love triangle involving the model's wife\, played brilliantly
by Tilda Swinton in her first feature role. With luscious production des
ign\, the dazzling Caravaggio is arguably the most accessible of Jarman's
films.\n\n"By the standards normal in British cinema\, "Caravaggio" is a
n enterprise of extraordinary daring and resonance." - John Russell Taylo
 r\, Sight & Sound\n\n"Gazing at Jarman's film stills creates a vertiginou
s sense of collapsing time that pulls us every which way\; of all Caravag
gio's followers\, Jarman\, it would seem\, was the one who understood him
best. Gold. Black. Red. Darkness. Light. It is a cinematic distillation
of the artist's visual world." - Maria H. Loh\, Frieze

DESCRIPTION:Film screening:\n\nJoin us for a screening of 3 works from Str
 aub-Huillet:\n\nNOT RECONCILED (1964\, 55 min)\nEVERY REVOLUTION IS A THR
 OW OF DICE (1977\, 10 min)\nTHE WITCHES\, WOMEN AMONG THEMSELVES (2008\,
 21 min)\n\nNOT RECONCILED\n(Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet\, 1964\
 , 55 min\, West Germany\, Digital)\n\n"Long live dynamite!" In NOT RECONC
ILED\, Straub-Huillet attempt to unmoor their audience by denying them th
e soothing reassurances of conventional storytelling\, spatial continuity
\, or psychological explanation as they hopscotch across the chronologies
of Heinrich Böll's novel\, moving freely between the Kaiser autocracy of
the 1910s and the Adenauer economic miracle of the 1950s. In doing so\,
they chart the origins and legacy of Nazism\, and the moral demands of ob
edience and sacrifice within the German bourgeois family.\n\n"For all its
difficulty and complexity as an integral narrative\, "Not Reconciled" re
gisters more simply and conventionally than Straub's other works within i
ts individual sequences\, and is perhaps his only film to which the usual
concept of mise en scène can comfortably be applied." - Jonathan Rosenba
um\n\n"Straub and Huillet bring the layers of history to life in the pres
ent tense\, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spa
re\, tense visual rhetoric evoke a moral crisis as well as the response -
as much in style as in substance - that it demands." - Richard Brody\, T
he New Yorker\n\nEVERY REVOLUTION IS A THROW OF DICE\n(Jean-Marie Straub
 and Danièle Huillet\, 1977\, 10 min\, France\, Digital)\n\nStraub and Hui
llet invited friends to recite Stéphane Mallarmé's 1897 poem "A Throw of
the Dice Will Never Abolish Chance\," with its radically modern use of fr
ee verse\, in a park alongside the wall in Père Lachaise cemetery where t
he last 147 men and women of the Paris Commune were lined up and shot dea
d in 1871.\n\nIt is not hard to understand why these ambitious filmmakers
were drawn to Mallarme's late-19th-century poem\, which casts readers ad
rift in a sea of elusive meanings\, a playfully and hermetically cubist c
onstellation of words that can assume myriad visual\, aural\, and symboli
 c forms.\n\nTHE WITCHES\, WOMEN AMONG THEMSELVES\n(Jean-Marie Straub\, 20
 08\, 21 min\, France/Italy\, DCP)\n\nThe enchantress Circe recounts to Le
ucò her attempts to bewitch and bed Odysseus. She talks about men and wom
en\, the human and the divine\, and the brave hero who chooses to become
neither a pig nor a God.

DESCRIPTION:Film screening:\n\nMOSES AND AARON\n(Jean-Marie Straub and Dan
 ièle Huillet\, 1974\, 105 min\, Austria/West Germany/France/Italy\, Digit
al)\n\nPreceded by the short film\, INTRODUCTION TO ARNOLD SCHOENBERG'S "
ACCOMPANIMENT TO A CINEMATOGRAPHIC SCENE" (Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle
 Huillet\, 1972\, 15 min\, West Germany\, Digital)\n\nMOSES AND AARON is a
familiar Biblical tale transformed into a cinematic opera of seemingly e
ndless possibility. In expressive\, melodic tones\, the fraternal pair de
bate God's true message and intent for His creations\, a conflict that le
ads their followers towards chaos and sin. Set almost entirely within a R
oman amphitheater whose history lends every precise line-reading and gest
 ure\, every startling camera move and cut\, a totalizing force\, Straub-H
uillet's adaptation of Schoenberg's unfinished opera opens us to the stim
ulating worldview of a filmmaking duo whose masterful efforts are finally
coming to light.\n\nINTRODUCTION TO ARNOLD SCHOENBURG is inspired by a 1
923 letter addressed by Arnold Schoenberg to his one-time friend\, painte
r Wassily Kandinsky\, in which the Austrian composer reflects on the terr
ible fate awaiting the European Jews\, as well as Bertolt Brecht's 1935 s
peech to the International Congress in Defense of Culture.\n\n"An immense
ly moving\, even thrilling work. One of the monuments of 20th-century cin
ematic modernism." - Dave Kehr\, The New York Times\n\n"I saw it at Canne
s at the time... It was so beautiful\, captivating\, intelligent - a beau
 ty that doesn't want to be beautiful\, and that's how it's achieved." - C
hantal Akerman\, director of Jeanne Dielman\n\n"A cinema of exhilaration
... As in some Ford films\, a tracking shot can make you cry. They are th
e only films I know in which you can feel the force of gravity." - Thom A
ndersen\, director of Los Angeles Plays Itself\n\n"[The directors'] raref
ied aesthetic coheres perfectly with the opera to come off as a kind of 1
 2-tone filmmaking which\, like Schoenberg's music\, reclaims a classical
ideal for a progressive cause that owes nothing to nostalgia. Oblique ang
les\, long takes\, and static tableaux allow Straub and Huillet to go str
aight to the drama inherent in the story and the composition. The stark i
mages are as passionate and engaging\, profound and beautiful as the comp
lex music to which they insightfully respond." - Richard Brody\, The New
Yorker\n\n"The greatest opera film ever made." - P. Adams Sitney

DESCRIPTION:The Franklin Humanities Institute's "Entanglement: Ecologies o

 CE"\n(Göran Olsson\, 2014\, 89 min\, Sweden/Finland\, Digital)\n\n-- Gran
d Jury World Cinema Documentary Prize Nominee at the Sundance Film Festiv
al\n-- Winner of the Cinema Fairbindet Prize at the Berlin International
Film Festival\n\nCONCERNING VIOLENCE\, a new documentary from Göran Hugo
Olsson (director of "The Black Power Mixtape") is a bold visual narration
on colonization in Africa\, based on newly discovered archival material
covering the struggle for liberation from colonial rule in the late '60s
and '70s.\n\nAccompanied by text from Frantz Fanon's "The Wretched of the
Earth"\, featuring narration by singer and activist Lauryn Hill and an i
nterview with Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak\, renowned Columbia University p
rofessor and post-colonial cultural theorist\, CONCERNING VIOLENCE depict
s some of the most daring moments ever captured during the anti-coloniali
st struggle from the Angolan War of Independence to the Mozambique Libera
tion Front. CONCERNING VIOLENCE is an emotionally resonant cinematic essa
y\, which confronts the dehumanizing mechanisms of colonialism to illumin
ate the urgent need for change in the present.\n\n"A pulsing\, echoing tr
 umpet blast-repeated throughout-and some in-your-face political carnage i
dentify CONCERNING VIOLENCE for what it is: a prickly\, passionate call t
 o arms." - Joshua Rothkopf\, Time Out \n\n"CONCERNING VIOLENCE suggests t
hat the lesson has yet to be learned\, and it's only a matter of time unt
il history repeats itself again\, and action is taken." - Kevin Jagernaut
h\, Indiewire\n\n"This disturbing\, layered film is mercifully free of pa
t attempts to bring things up to date: chronologically speaking\, it conc
ludes in 1987. Yet there's no doubt that its final passage - in which Eur
ope is described as 'literally the creation of the third world'\, and Ame
rica as a 'monstrous' colonial power - is intended to give the viewer ple
nty to process with regard to contemporary nations still suffering the pr
onounced after-effects of colonisation. In many cases\, Fanon's astringen
t words seem as relevant today as ever." - Ashley Clark\, BFI

 min\, USA\, 35mm)\n\nNew 35mm Restoration!\n\nThis thinly veiled and hype
r-paranoiac take on the JFK assassination stars Jeff Bridges as Nick Kega
n\, scion of a fabulously wealthy and powerful family headed by patriarch
John Huston ("the real delight of the film" - Vincent Canby\, The New Yo
rk Times)\, as a character based on Joe Kennedy. Bridges soon finds himse
lf going down multiple rabbit holes while trying to unravel the conspirac
 y behind the murder of a U.S. president\, his older brother.\n\n"A madcap
riff... part black comedy\, part paranoid thriller\, part carnival hall
 of mirrors." - J. Hoberman\, The New York Times\n\n"Hectic\, giddy\, absu
rd - but\, in its evocation of a conspiracy so logical that it is beyond
belief\, the film dramatizes the power of such an idea to attract true be
lievers." - Richard Brody\, The New Yorker\n\n"[It] can't decide whether
it wants to be a comedy or a nightmare\, so it splits the difference. Eve
 n by 1979 standards\, it's a seriously warped film. Writer-director Willi
am Richert once called it 'cinematic cocaine: relentless\, just getting h
igher and stranger\, shooting through contemporary paranoia.'" - David Fe
 ar\, Rolling Stone

DESCRIPTION:INSIDE THE YELLOW COCOON SHELL\n(Phạm Thiên Ân\, 2023\, 182 mi
 n\, Vietnam\, Vietnamese with English subtitles\, DCP)\n\nWinner of the C
amera d'Or for best first film at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival\n\nINSIDE
THE YELLOW COCOON SHELL is a reverie on faith\, loss\, and nature expres
sed with uncommon invention and depth. It's a simple tale told with visua
l complexity: after a car accident claims the life of his sister-in-law a
nd leaves his 5-year-old nephew an orphan\, a thirty-something man named
Thien (Le Phong Vu) leaves Saigon for a trip back to his rural hometown.
During his meditative\, wandering visit\, Thien wrestles with his own agn
osticism in the face of others' religious beliefs\, summons memories of h
is long-disappeared brother\, and reconnects with a former girlfriend who
now lives as a nun at a Christian church and school. With its drifting c
amera\, evocative use of natural light\, and gratifying perambulatory nat
ure\, this is a film with the power to readjust one's perceptions of the
world around us.\n\n"Exquisite... casts an unshakeable spell. Invites com
parisons to such titans as Apichatpong Weerasethakul\, Tsai Ming-liang an
d even Theo Angelopoulos\, without feeling derivative of any." - Guy Lodg
e\, Variety\n\n"Provocative\, absorbing and mysterious. Defined by visual
splendor and a complex questioning of faith." - Allan Hunter\, Screen\n\
n"A spellbinding tale of the soul's unfathomable desire for the other-wor
ldly. Pham has certainly found his own divine calling with filmmaking." -
  Josh Slater-Williams\, Indiewire
