DESCRIPTION:"Cloud" ["Kuraudo"]\n(Kiyoshi Kurosawa\, 2024\, 123 min\, Japa
 n\, Japanese with English subtitles\, DCP)\n\nA stylish\, subversive thri
ller from suspense-maverick Kiyoshi Kurosawa ("Cure"\, "Pulse")\, concern
ing Yoshii\, an ambitious\, yet directionless\, young factory worker from
Tokyo who side hustles in the murky realm of black market reselling\, ch
eating buyers and sellers alike. After swindling his way into loads of ca
sh\, he becomes slowly disconnected to humanity\, moving out of the city\
, shunning his girlfriend\, and hiring a devoted assistant. But after a s
eries of mysterious\, sinister incidents occur\, he begins to suspect his
former victims could be plotting the ultimate revenge. A master of caref
ully simmering tension to a bloody crescendo\, Kurosawa delivers a searin
g portrait of digital greed and vengeance.\n\n-- Japan's official submiss
ion for the Academy Award for Best International Feature\n\n"Kurosawa's l
atest film is a chilly and mystifying expression of a modern malevolence
which hangs over our lives - like a cloud\, if you will - worsened by con
stant digital connection." - Empire Magazine\n\n"Kurosawa inches back tow
ard the knotted-stomach dread of his horror classics CURE and PULSE with
CLOUD\, albeit accented this time with a healthily morbid sense of humour
. And\, perhaps more surprising\, a serious affinity for action movie sho
ot-outs." - Globe and Mail\n\n"That tension between modes [of realism and
online fantasy] gives CLOUD tremendous visceral and intellectual force\,
plus a persistent air of moral inquiry." - Justin Chang\, The New Yorker

DESCRIPTION:"Heartworn Highways"\n(James Szalapski\, 1976\, 92 min\, USA\,
  English\, DCP)\n\nIn the mid-70's\, James Szalapski captured lightning i
n a bottle\, a fleeting moment in music history. Namely\, the birth of Ou
tlaw Country Music\, heralding a new\, close-knit generation of renegade
musicians\, inspired by Willie and Waylon. Typically\, they gathered at G
uy and Susanna Clark's home in Nashville or at Townes van Zandt's trailer
in Austin\, to play each other's songs deep into the night. Turning thei
r backs on the corporate establishment\, they formed a soulful community
prizing personal\, beautifully crafted songwriting above all else. Resolu
te romantic poets\, they chose their own path. Buried for 25 years\, "Hea
rtworn Highways" is now revered as a classic\, seminal work that offers a
rare\, unfiltered look into the lives of the artists who shaped and rede
fined the genre. In Szalapski's film the camera becomes an unseen guest\,
roaming casually beyond social borders\, bringing us into another world
of American roots music exposing its open heart and gritty innocence. Fea
turing: Guy Clark\, Townes van Zandt\, David Allen Coe\, Rodney Crowell\,
Larry Jon Wilson\, Steve Young\, Gamble Rogers\, Charlie Daniels Band\,
Steve Earle... and their many friends.\n\n"The hard living - and hard par
tying - lifestyles of outlaw country's figureheads are played out on scre
en as we visit Van Zandt's Austin trailer\, see Coe play in Tennessee Sta
te Prison\, join the gang in Nashville's notorious Wig Wam Tavern and wit
ness a liquor-fueled Christmas at Clark's house. No wonder the film's ori
ginal tagline read: 'The best music and the best whiskey come from the sa
me part of the country'." - Light in the Attic\n\n"An essential artifact
and document of that scene and sound is filmmaker James Szalapski's long-
inaccessible documentary HEARTWORN HIGHWAYS\, a film with as much of a de
voted cult as the music itself." - Nashville Scene\n\n"HEARTWORN HIGHWAYS
fell in line with the great hangout movies of the past 50 years when aut
hority started to lose its power and a few moments of creativity was wort
h more than its weight in gold." - James Clay\, Fresh Fiction\n\nView Tra

DESCRIPTION:"The Lovers on the Bridge" ["Les amants du Pont-Neuf"] \n(Leos
  Carax\, 1991\, 126 min\, France\, French w/ English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n
Leos Carax's delirious saga of l'amour fou burns with an intoxicating sty
listic freedom as it traces the highs and lows of the passionate relation
ship that develops between a homeless artist (Juliette Binoche) who is lo
sing her sight and a troubled\, alcoholic street performer (Denis Lavant)
living on Paris's famed Pont-Neuf bridge. Capturing their romantic aband
on with a giddy expressionist energy-especially in a wild dance sequence
set against an explosion of fireworks- this whirlwind love story is an ex
hilarating journey through a relationship that confirmed Carax's status a
s one of the leading lights of the post-New Wave French cinema.\n\nThis 4
K restoration was carried out by TransPerfect Media from the original 35m
m film negative and multi tracks. Color grading supervised by Caroline Ch
ampetier\, sound by Thomas Guader. Project supervised by Sophie Boyer\, J
ean Pierre Boiget and the StudioCanal team. Digitization and restoration
done with the support of the CNC and the participation of Theo Films.\n\n
"... a lush cinematic painting of love\, passion\, and madness expressed
in a romantic surrealist style and images charges with color and magic."
 - Sean Axmaker\n\n"... one of the most splendidly reckless films ever mad
e -- the film that might have torn through the mind of Godard's Pierrot l
e Fou\, after love made him paint his face blue and tie sticks of dynamit
 e to his hair." - Stuart Klawans\, The Nation\n\n\nView Trailer: https://

DESCRIPTION:"Universal Language"\n(Matthew Rankin\, 2024\, 89 min\, Canada
 \, Farsi & French w/ English subtitles\, DCP)\n\nWith deadpan\, absurdist
charm\, Manitoban filmmaker Matthew Rankin triangulates a group of inter
connected storylines set in a wintry\, bleakly beautiful Winnipeg. Two ki
ds discover a bank note frozen in a block of ice\, which they hope to ret
rieve to buy their classmates a new pair of glasses. A tour guide brings
befuddled visitors on a walking tour of the city's modest environs. A mel
ancholy man (Rankin\, in an autobiographical role) returns home from Mont
real to reunite with his family after many years. Reimagining Winnipeg as
a city in which Farsi is the predominant language\, Rankin's visually an
d narratively inventive film was inspired by Iranian films of the 1970s\,
frequently humanistic children's fables\, in this case transferred to a
world of beige\, concrete brutalist buildings and increasingly surreal\,
Tati-esque humor.\n\n-- Academy Award Nominee for Best International Feat

 ST International Film Festival\n\nDirector's statement:\nIn July 2020\, I
returned to my hometown\, Harbin\, where I had been away for six years.
At the age of 24\, the trajectory of my life came to a halt\, and I began
to re-examine how I had been carried along and shaped by the currents of
life. 'Xinyue' (New Moon) was the name my mother gave me\, inspired by t
he beauty she looked up to amid pain and chaos. It led me to reflect on t
he 1990s\, the decade I was born\, and to examine the eternal entanglemen
t between hopeful aspirations and harsh realities.\n\nThis is my first fi
lm\, created alongside fellow artists from the creative community of Caoc
hangdi Workstation. In early 2021\, I participated in the online Caochang
di Video Writing Workshop\, and since then\, I've communicated and collab
orated with my Caochangdi peers through online theater\, email groups\, b
 ook clubs\, workshops\, and more. The material\, direction\, structure\,
and final form of this film all grew out of this process. Through this cr
eation\, I have borne witness to my 27 years of life\, from which I hope
to continue my work under the name 'New Moon\,' with chapter two\, three\
 , and more.\n\nAbout the director:\nLi Xinyue\, born in Harbin in 1996\,
worked in Beijing for two years after graduating from university. In 2020
\, she returned to Harbin and participated in the Caochangdi Workstation
creative community\, starting a series of writing and video creation unde
r the name of "New Moon." \n\nAbout the series:\nThis screening is part o
f the 2025 Living the Pandemic Film Series by AMES Presents\, featuring n
ew works from The Folk Memory Project\, Caochangdi\, China.

 nt:\n\n"Henry Fonda for President"\n(Alexander Horwath\, 2024\, 184 min\,
  Austria/Germany\, English & German w/ Subtitles\, DCP)\n\n"The story of
Henry Fonda\, both on screen and off\, is the story of the United States.
It's a story of democratic yearnings and violent shortcomings\, traceabl
e not only in the actor's legendary portrayals of pioneering settler ('Dr
ums Along the Mohawk')\, migrant sharecropper ('The Grapes of Wrath')\, g
ullible heir ('The Lady Eve')\, and president ('Young Mr. Lincoln'\, 'Fai
l-Safe')\, but also in his own life as the descendant of a Dutch family i
n pre-colonial New York\, and as a witness to watershed events of the 20t
h century: the Omaha Race Riots of 1919\, the war in the Pacific\, the ci
vil rights struggle\, and the ascendance of another actor\, Ronald Reagan
\, at the climax of the Cold War. 'His face is a picture of opposites in
conflict\,' John Steinbeck once remarked\, and indeed Fonda\, perhaps mor
e than any other actor of his generation\, brought a sense of moral angui
sh to nearly every role he played\, whether victims of injustice ('You On
ly Live Once'\, 'The Wrong Man')\, or messengers of salvation ('My Darlin
 g Clementine'\, '12 Angry Men') and terror ('The Ox-Bow Incident'\, 'Once
Upon a Time in the West'). Tracing the entwined\, complex trajectories
of an actor and his nation in Hollywood movie clips\, recorded interview
 s\, and a cross-country pilgrimage to significant landmarks\, Alexander H
orwath-together with Michael Palm and Regina Schlagnitweit-has created a
magisterial work of cultural history." -- MoMA\n\nAlexander Horwath is a
writer\, curator and film historian. His essays and books have\, among ot
her topics\, addressed subjects such as Josef von Sternberg\, Ruth Becker
 mann\, Guy Debord\, Austrian avant-garde cinema\, Film Curatorship\, and
the American cinema of the 1960s and 70s.\n\n"Horwath's ready cinephilia
makes Henry Fonda a fruitful and pleasurable watch. One marvels at the ea
se with which he articulates a particular Fonda performance's qualities a
s much as delights in the clever and seemingly obvious connections he mak
es between a film and historical event." -- Chris Cassingham\n\n==\nView

DESCRIPTION:"Three Days of the Condor"\n(Sydney Pollack\, 1975\, 117 min\,
United States\, English\, DCP)\n\n-- In memory of Robert Redford (1936-2
 025)\n\n"In Sydney Pollack's critically acclaimed suspense-thriller\, Rob
ert Redford stars as CIA Agent Joe Turner\, code name: Condor. When his e
ntire office is massacred\, Turner goes on the run from his enemies... an
d his so-called allies. In his frantic hunt for answers\, and in a desper
ate run for his life\, Turner abducts photographer Kathy Hale (Faye Dunaw
ay)\, eventually seducing her into helping him. With nowhere to turn and
no one to trust\, Turner realizes his most dangerous enemy may be closer
than he ever feared. As he zeroes in on the truth\, he discovers there ar
e some secrets people would kill to keep." - American Cinematheque\n\n"Re
dford\, Dunaway\, Von Sydow\, Cliff Robertson and John Houseman turn in s
uperb work\, and the film is as pure a thriller as one could hope for\, w
ith a gripping premise\, hurtling plot and a marvelous air of menace." -
NetFlix \n\n"This peerless Sydney Pollack thriller hasn't just aged well\
, it's become positively prophetic\, or at least eerily resonant." - The
Times (UK)\n\n"[A] well-made thriller\, tense and involving\, and the sca
ry thing\, in these months after Watergate\, is that it's all too believa
ble. Conspiracies involving murder by federal agencies used to be found i
n obscure publications of the far left. Now they're glossy entertainments
starring Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway. How soon we grow used to the m

almost 30 years\, the brave leaders of Gunmaku have worked in intercultu

min\, USA\, English\, Digital)\n\n"Perhaps one of the strangest films to
ever win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature\, THE HELLSTROM C
HRONICLE (1971) portrays in stunning (and sometimes disgusting) detail\,
a war we did not know we were fighting: the struggle between humankind an
d the insects that are determined to take over the planet. Director Walon
Green and his team of cinematographers macro-photographed the vicious in
sect world with microscopic and telescopic lenses\, and sometimes in stop
-motion ... Stringing this parade of violence\, seduction\, and survival
together is Dr. Nils Hellstrom\, a fictitious entomologist played by Lawr
ence Pressman. Banished from the scientific community for choosing insect
s over mankind and attempting to aid in their inevitable domination\, Hel
lstrom's narration and contextualization injects each scene with an extra
potent dose of ecological horror. Although satirical\, the film's "thesi
s": that mankind is too ignorant and individualistic to survive\, ultimat
ely doesn't seem so ridiculous." - Stephanie Monohan\, Screen Slate\n\n"[
T]he most extraordinary film which alternates the stunningly beautiful wi
th the intensely ugly so tantalisingly that you begin to wonder which is

arries beautiful microphotography with a Herzogian view of nature as a de
ceptively idyllic stage that sings with the relentless harmony of murder.

ran community of Black Algerians. Surrounded by ancient rock art\, the ar
ea was also the site of French nuclear bombs between 1961-66 and continue

the voices of multiple residents. By affording the residents distance fr

\n"One of the most visually ravishing films ever made\, Bernardo Bertoluc

ring Jean-Louis Trintignant as a tormented intellectual in Mussolini's It

Alberto Moravia\, THE CONFORMIST is a luminous\, political thriller that
explores political violence\, eroticism\, and social conformity in Mussol

postman Frédéric Andréi is on the run all across Paris- including a hair-
raising motorcycle-and-moped chase through the Métro - hotly pursued by a
drug dealer's hit team\, ruthless Taiwanese music pirates\, and the obvi
ously outmanned flics: all because he pirated a recording of the woman of
his dreams\, the never-recorded opera super-star Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fer

E WALLY. Longtime assistant director Beineix's debut was an international
arthouse sensation\, playing for over a year in some cinemas\, nabbing f
our French Césars (including Best First Film\, Best Music\, Best Sound\,
and Philippe Rousselot's cinematography)\, and singlehandledly launching
the 'cinéma du look'\, an explosion of visually stunning\, punk-inspired\
, super-cool French movies in the early 80s\, soon followed by the films
of Luc Besson and Leos Carax." - Film Forum\n\n"For his first feature\, J

arde-Godard's colors and conflicting tones\, Rivette's screwball thriller
plotting-for a work of unalloyed entertainment\, which was such a sharp
commercial idea it's a wonder no one had thought of it before." - Dave Ke

ed Diva as 'the first French postmodernist film.' ... 'It's a glittering
toy of a movie by a director who understands the pleasures to be had from
a picture that doesn't take itself very seriously. Every shot seems desi

DESCRIPTION:Looking back at our earliest cinematic sparks! Baby Geniuses i
s a collection of moving images we made between the ages of 0 -18\, when
everything felt possible and nothing had to make sense. How did we first
see the world through a lens? How do those early visions still shape the
way we see now? Let's celebrate the creativity that began long before the
camera ever felt serious! \n\nThis program\, curated by second-year MFA
students as a continuation of the Experimental & Documentary Arts (EDA) S
alon tradition\, will be a cinematic collection of archives\, family tape
s\, and childhood moving images\, all produced by members of Duke's and D
urham's arts communities. \n\nCo-presented by Duke Master of Fine Arts in

DESCRIPTION:**Changfu Chang\, 2025\, 80 minutes\, USA\, in English with En
glish subtitles**\n\nJoin APSI and the Asian American & Diaspora Studies
Program for a special screening of a powerful new documentary profiling m
ultiple members of the Asian American community who stepped up to share t
heir own battles with mental illness and the profound impact these strugg
les have had on our society. Silent War reveals the human cost of staying
silent-and the power of breaking that silence. At once personal and poli
tical\, the film charts a collective journey from shame to resilience\, o
ffering hope for a more inclusive and compassionate mental health future.
\n\nFollowing the screening\, an expert panel will discuss the local need
for culturally-informed mental health care as well as their experiences
supporting the Asian American and Asian diaspora communities in North Car
olina.\n\nAbout the film:\n\nSilent War: Asian American Reckonings with M
ental Health is an unflinching exploration of the cultural\, emotional\,
and systemic barriers that have kept generations of Asian Americans from
speaking openly about mental illness. Told through the deeply personal st
ories of individuals and families-including a young Chinese American woma
n who survived several suicide attempts\, a mother reckoning with her dau
ghter's bipolar disorder\, an established Korean newscaster being accused
of being "too Asian\," and a Sikh family haunted by a father's unresolve
d pain-the film exposes the quiet suffering beneath the model minority my
th. Also spotlighted are individuals from a wide range of backgrounds who
se lived experiences help shed light on important topics of communication
and language barriers\, model minority myth\, belonging and loyalty\, as
well as unique mental health challenges Asian Americans face. \n\nBlendi
ng vérité footage\, interviews\, and expert commentary\, Silent War delve
s into the impact of migration\, intergenerational trauma\, and cultural
expectations on mental well-being. The film also highlights community-led
efforts to destigmatize mental health and push for culturally responsive
care. More than a portrait of pain\, Silent War is a call to action-and
a tribute to those fighting for visibility\, healing\, and change in the
 face of silence.

DESCRIPTION:Cate Knothe (T'24) returns to Duke to screen her documentary f
ilm: "Now It's a Strange House" with Ethan Grossman. Cinematography by
Lilit Danielyan. \n\nThrough interweaving recently captured digital foot
age and the 30-year-old videotapes of Ethan's great-grandmother\, filmmak
ers Ethan Grossman & Cate Knothe explore how the small German village of
Eubigheim grapples with the history of their Nazification. As connections
are drawn between the universally-loathed period of National Socialism a
nd the modern day rise of German nationalism and anti-immigration policie
s/sentiments\, the Eubigheim townspeople are confronted with the possibil
ity that they may be less accepting than they once imagined.\n\nIntroduct
ion by Professor Shambhavi Kaul\, Director of Cinematic Arts with a moder
ated Q&A to follow the screening by Professor Kata Gellen\, Director of t
he Duke Center for Jewish Studies and the two filmmakers\, Cate Knothe an
d Ethan Grossman.\n\nCate Knothe is an experimental\, narrative & documen
tary filmmaker whose work aims to uncover the stories hidden in everyday
realities. Inspired by place and landscapes\, her films explore how colle
ctive memory and storytelling influence the ways in which the world is ex
perienced. Ultimately\, film acts as their means to both connect to envir
onment and to understand the complexities of identity\, belonging\, and c
ommunity.\n\nEthan Grossman is a Queens-based filmmaker and creative prod
ucer whose work spans documentary\, music video\, and fashion media. Afte
r beginning his career in narrative film\, he now focuses on documentary
storytelling\, with two projects currently in production. He also collabo

sts and turns and engaging rhetoric of the legal trial with the suspense
and intrigue of an investigative thriller." - New Indian Express\n\n"A tr

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: \n\n"It Was Just an Accident"\n(Jafar Panahi\,
  2025\, 104 min\, Iran/France/Luxembourg\, Persian with English subtitles
\, DCP)\n\n-- Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival\n
\nJafar Panahi reaffirms his status as one of this century's great cinema
tic heroes with perhaps his bravest film yet. Ever since he was arrested\
, imprisoned\, and banned from making movies by the Iranian government 15
years ago\, Panahi has found ways of producing films in secret and witho
ut official permission. Working once again with a courageous cast and cre
w\, he shows both his political risk-taking and confident command of craf
t in his most explicit attack on his country's repressive regime-a cuttin
g and darkly humorous thriller that concerns a mechanic\, Vahid (Vahid Mo
basseri)\, who believes he has reencountered by chance the government int
elligence officer\, Eghbal (Ebrahim Azizi)\, who had tortured him while u
nder detainment. As Vahid enlists the services of acquaintances whose liv
es were also forever altered by Eghbal's cruelties\, the thirst for reven
ge and the sense of danger escalate-as do questions of moral choice and c
ulpability.\n\n"An extraordinary revenge parable. Every moment of it atte

uncomfortable\, deeply hilarious coming-of-age movie ... DÌDI plays like
an extended and surprisingly welcome visit to the filmmaker's childhood b

artist whose talent for and dedication to painting goes largely unnoticed

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: \n\n"Peter Hujar's Day"\n(Ira Sachs\, 2025\, 7
 6 min\, USA\, English\, DCP)\n\nIn 1974\, acclaimed photographer Peter Hu
jar describes the routines and rituals that define an artist's life to hi
 s friend\, the writer Linda Rosenkrantz\, capturing a single day's activi
ties in touching and funny detail: from interactions with cultural icons
of the day\, including Allen Ginsberg\, William S. Burroughs and Susan So
ntag\, to the texture and energy of downtown New York in its heyday. Ben
Whishaw and Rebecca Hall star in the elegant and intimate new piece from
filmmaker Ira Sachs (PASSAGES) - a dazzling showcase for the two performe
rs at its center - that is both a masterful portrait of a time and place
and a captivating film about the way art emerges from the intimate detail
s of everyday life.\n\n"In a mere 76 minutes\, director Ira Sachs and his
virtuoso actors\, Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall\, have captured a specifi
c world in universal terms and made a film for the ages." - Peter Travers

y what he did in a different medium: demanding we look long and hard at t
he world." - Washington Post\n\n"PETER HUJAR'S DAY captures that elusive
feeling of the past catching up with the present\, in a city alive with w

DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2026 French Film Festival\n(Jan 29 -
 Feb 13\, 2025)\n\nMISERCORDIA [Miséricorde]\n(Alain Guiraudie\, 2024\, 10
 3 min\, France\, French w/ English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n-- Ranked Best Fil
m of 2024 by Cahiers du Cinéma\n\nThe teasingly entwined ambiguities of l
ove and death continue to fascinate Alain Guiraudie (STRANGER BY THE LAKE
 \, NYFF51)\, who returns with a sharp\, sinister\, yet slyly funny thrill
er. Set in an autumnal\, woodsy village in his native region of Occitanie
\, his latest follows the meandering exploits of Jérémie (Félix Kysyl)\,
an out-of-work baker who has drifted back to his hometown after the death
of his beloved former boss\, a bakery owner. Staying long after the fune
ral\, the seemingly benign Jérémie begins to casually insinuate himself i
nto his mentor's family\, including his kind-hearted widow (Catherine Fro
 t) and venomously angry son (Jean-Baptiste Durand)\, while making an incr
easingly surprising-and ultimately beneficial-friendship with an oddly ch
eerful local priest (Jacques Develay). In Guiraudie's quietly carnal worl
d\, violence and eroticism explode with little anticipation\, and crimina
l behavior can seem like a natural extension of physical desire. The Fren
ch director is at the top of his game in MISERICORDIA\, again upending al
l genre expectations.\n\n"As in his award-winning STRANGER BY THE LAKE\,
the director's penchant for blending queerness into Hitchcockian genre co
nventions keeps the story both compelling and enigmatic." - NPR\n\n"For s
heer suspense\, few recent thrillers match Alain Guiraudie's low-key but
high-anxiety mystery MISERCORDIA." - Richard Brody\n\nSponsored by Albert

DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2026 French Film Festival\n(Jan 29 -
 Feb 13\, 2025)\n\n\nHOLY COW [Vingt Dieux] \n(Louise Courvoisier\, 2024\,
  90 min\, France\, French with English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n-- Winner of t
wo César Awards including Best First Film and Best Female Revelation (Maï
wene Barthelemy)\n\nFollowing the sudden death of his farmer father\, har
d-partying 18-year-old Totone (Clément Faveau) is abruptly obliged to ste
p into the role of man of the house in Louise Courvoisier's directorial d
ebut\, which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at last year's Ca
nnes Film Festival. Taking a job at a nearby dairy farm\, where he quickl
y falls for the farmer's daughter\, Totone makes up his mind to jump-star
t his family's future via an unorthodox shortcut: winning a 30\,000 Euro
prize for producing the best Comté in the region. In this warm\, lived-in
  coming-of-age fable-a treat for cheese-loving cinephiles in particular-C
ourvoisier brings together a cast of non-professional actors from the Jur
a region where she herself grew up\, creating a rich depiction of rural a
gricultural life that's also a crowd-pleasing story about the unlikely de
tours that shape the utterly unpredictable process of growing up.\n\n"Imm
ersed in rural\, working-class culture\, the action is vérité and honest
without being bleak. Courvoisier shoots in a way that's unfiltered-litera
lly\, given her use of natural light. You can practically feel that cool
misty air\, that hot sun on your skin." - The Times (UK)\n\n"[A] testame
nt to resilience in the face of hardship\, and a hymn to the Jura region
where Courvoisier herself grew up. Her images of the countryside ooze bri
ghtness and warmth\, and the film takes care to authentically depict the
community." - Little White Lies\n\nSponsored by Albertine Cinemathèque\,

DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2026 French Film Festival\n(Jan 29 -
Feb 13\, 2025)\n\nMEETING WITH POL POT [Rendez-vouz avec Pol Pot]\n(Rithy
  Panh\, 2024\, 112 min\, France/Cambodia\, French and Cambodian with Engl
 ish subtitles\, DCP)\n\nDemocratic Kampuchea (Cambodia) - 1978. Three jou
rnalists are invited by the Khmer Rouge to conduct an exclusive interview
of the regime's leader\, Pol Pot. The country seems ideal. But behind th
e Potemkin village\, the Khmer Rouge regime is declining and the war with
Vietnam threatens to invade the country. The regime is looking for culpr
its\, secretly carrying out a large scale genocide. Under the eyes of the
journalists\, the beautiful picture cracks\, revealing the horror. Their
journey progressively turns into a nightmare.\n\nThis real-life journali
stic excursion\, based on true events detailed in Elizabeth Becker's nonf
iction book WHEN THE WAR WAS OVER: CAMBODIA AND THE KHMER ROUGE REVOLUTIO
N\, is brought to life thanks to exemplary lead performances from Irène J
acob\, Grégoire Colin\, and Cyril Gueï\, meticulously conjuring the sight
s and sounds of 1978 Cambodia with the assistance of archival footage and
clay figurines. The result is a unique admixture-historical horror paire
d with a rich meditation on the impossibility of portraying it.\n\n"A chi
lling historical drama rendered with impeccable sleight of hand\, Rithy P
anh's RENDEZ-VOUS AVEC POL POT reveals its political dimensions through l
ayers of obfuscation." - Variety\n\n"A period drama infused with strong t
hriller undertones. Beyond depicting the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge ..
. the film conveys a timely message about the crucial role of journalism.

DESCRIPTION:**RESCHEDULED SCREENING**\n (This event was originally planned
to take place on January 31st\, but had to be rescheduled due to weather
 .)\n\n\n==\nScreening as part of the 2026 French Film Festival\n(Jan 29 -
  Feb 13\, 2025)\n\n\nGHOST TRAIL [Les Fantômes]\n(Jonathan Millet\, 2024\
 , 106 min\, France/Belgium/Germany\, French\, Arabic\, Turkish\, and Engl
ish with English subtitles\, DCP)\n\nTwo years after being released from
Syrian jail\, Hamid (Adam Bessa) is making ends meet as a construction wo
rker in the French city of Strasbourg\, where\, haunted by the memory of
his imprisonment\, the young man searches tirelessly for the man who tort
ured him\, determined to get his revenge-but what's the real price of ven
geance for the person seeking it? Inspired by true events\, Jonathan Mill
et's deeply researched thriller excavates the too-little-examined moral d
ilemmas and political negligence that traumatized migrants must confront
amid the struggle to rebuild their lives and take control of their destin
ies at the margins of contemporary French society\, inviting audiences to
better empathize with France's newest residents\, and to better understa
nd their place in the world-and our own.\n\n"The quest for justice fuels
a tense manhunt in the first fiction feature from writer/director Jonatha
n Millet\, which balances cloak and dagger intrigue with an acute psychol
ogical exploration of grief\, loss and exile." - Screen International\n\n

DESCRIPTION:"The Parallax View"\n(Alan J. Pakula\, 1974\, 102 min\, USA\,
English\, DCP)\n \nPerhaps no director tapped into the pervasive sense of
dread and mistrust that defined the 1970s more effectively than Alan J.
Pakula\, who\, in the second installment of his celebrated Paranoia Trilo
gy\, offers a chilling vision of America in the wake of the assassination
s of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King Jr.\, and about to be shocked by
Watergate. Three years after witnessing the murder of a leading senator
atop Seattle's Space Needle\, reporter Joseph Frady (Warren Beatty) begin
s digging into the mysterious circumstances surrounding the killing-and s
tumbles into a labyrinthine conspiracy far more sinister than he could ha
ve imagined. THE PARALLAX VIEW's coolly stylized\, shadow-etched composit
ions by acclaimed cinematographer Gordon Willis give visual expression to
a mood that begins as an anxious whisper and ends as a scream into the v
oid. \n-- Criterion Collection\n \n"Excellent script by David Giler and
Lorenzo Semple Jr\, stunning photography by... Gordon Willis\, and perfec
t acting\, the story of Beatty's infiltration of the society and his atte
mpt to foil yet another killing is riveting\, fascinating and nerve-racki
 ng." -- Radio Times\n\n==\nView Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2026 French Film Festival\n(Jan 29 -
 Feb 13\, 2025)\n\nANNETTE\n(Leos Carax\, 2021\, 139 min\, France\, Englis
h\, DCP)\n\nA years-spanning musical melodrama drenched in greens and yel
lows\, scored by oddball art-pop duo Sparks and based on their original s
 tory\, ANNETTE marks the French director's first English-language film\,
which revolves around a celebrity couple in present-day Los Angeles. Henr
 y (Adam Driver)\, a towering stand-up comedian\, and Ann (Marion Cotillar
d)\, a world-famous singer\, are living life happily in the spotlight unt
il their world is upended after the birth of their first child\, Annette\
, a mysterious little girl with a peculiar talent. Carax imbues his sixth
feature with grandiose compositions\, an exhilarating sense of movement\
 , and a turbulent emotional register-alternately moody\, beguiling\, effu
sive\, and hilarious-all the while toying with established genres in the
most thrilling ways imaginable.\n\n-- Winner for Best Director at the 202
 1 Cannes Film Festival\n\n"ANNETTE is a ride like no other\, a spellbindi
 ng waltz in a storm." - Empire Magazine\n\n"ANNETTE is remarkable. It's a
n exhilarating collision of cinema\, live concerts\, stage shows\, and ce
lebrity culture\, shaken up and let loose with abandon." - Polygon\n\n"In
its mix of angsty formalism and sing-along fun\, Annette may be the clos
est that musical cinema has come to when Brecht and Weill put a knife in
Macheath's hand for THE THREEPENNY OPERA." - Austin Chronicle\n\nSponsore
