DESCRIPTION:"Mekko" (Sterlin Harjo\, 2015\, 87 min\, in English and Mvskok
 e w/ English subtitles\, Color\, DCP)\n\nAfter two decades in prison\, "M
ekko" is released onto the streets of Tulsa. Falling in with a group of h
omeless Native Americans\, he begins to uncover a darkness that threatens
to consume his new community. Masterfully combining Native American lege
nd with the tension of a thriller\, Mekko is a new landmark in indigenous
cinema.\n\n-- This film complements the Nasher Museum exhibition\, Art f
or a New Understanding: Native Voices\, 1950s to Now.\n\n"Mekko" infuses
street-smart realism with Native American mysticism to create a quietly h
aunting portrait of fringe dwellers and castoffs." -- Sheri Linden\, The
Hollywood Reporter\n\n"What Harjo does to 'Nativize' the western is nothi
ng short of brilliant." -- Donato Totaro\, Offscreen.com

fly fast and furious in Jackie Chan's breathtakingly inventive martial-a

toundingly acrobatic fight choreography - including an epic shopping-mall

of kickboxing\, hurling himself into every stunt with total commitment\,
astounding athleticism and oddly unflappable\, shaggy-haired grace." - Ju

agnetic Maggie Cheung as a version of herself: a Hong Kong action movie s

DESCRIPTION:"Voices of the Rainforest" is a seventy-minute\, 4K image and
7.1 surround sound documentary about the ecological and aesthetic coevolu
tion of Papua New Guinea's Bosavi rainforest region and its inhabitants.
It is produced and directed by Steven Feld\, who first began regular rese
arch visits to Bosavi in 1976 and is the author of "Sound and Sentiment."
*There will be a Q&A with Feld following the screening.* "Voices" was or
iginally a 1991 CD release produced by Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart
for his Rykodisc series "The World." The recording condenses twenty-four
hours of sounds of the rainforest and the Bosavi people into an hour. It
makes audible myriad connections between the everyday sounds of the rainf
orest biosphere and the creative practices of singing to\, with\, and abo
ut it by the Bosavi people. In 2016 Feld digitized the original analog au
dio tapes long held in Mickey Hart's archive\, and recomposed an expanded
"Voices" as a 7.1 cinema surround sound concert for the recording's 25th
anniversary. The success of the immersive soundtrack led to funding effo
rts to digitize Feld's archive of Bosavi images\, and to send Feld and fi
lmmaker Jeremiah Richards to Bosavi for two months with high-resolution c
ameras and drones to renew the project locally. This screening at Duke is
sponsored by the Department of Music\, the Ethnography Workshop\, and th
e John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute's World Arts Series.

: Lewis Klahr (born 1956\, United States) is a Los Angeles-based experime

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening:\n\n"Atlantics"\n(Mati Diop\, 2019\, 105 min\,
 France/Senegal\, French & Wolof w/ subtitles\, Color\, DCP)\n\nMati Diop'
s haunting debut feature begins in Dakar with a star-crossed love affair
between two teenagers\, Ada and Souleiman. When he and a group of exploit
ed young workers disappear in the night in search of a better life abroad
\, a mysterious fever starts to spread among the women left behind. Winne
r of the Grand Prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.\n\n"Like PARASITE\,
its fellow Cannes honoree\, it testifies to the variety and vitality of
 politically alert genre filmmaking. It's a suspenseful\, sensual\, exciti
ng movie\, and therefore a deeply haunting one as well." -- A.O. Scott\,
New York Times\n\n"ATLANTICS is a film about being haunted\, being spellb
ound\, and the idea that ghosts are created within us. In the writing pro
cess\, I realized that besides TOUKI BOUKI\, by my uncle Djibril Diop Mam
bety\, I hadn't grown up with any black couple figures worthy of Romeo an
d Juliet. Through Ada and Souleiman\, I wanted to relate an impossible lo
ve in the age of rampant capitalism\, a love obliterated by injustice\, s
tolen by the ocean." -- Mati Diop\n\nView trailer: https://www.youtube.co

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening:\n\n"Zombi Child"\n(Bertrand Bonello\, 2019\, 1
 03 min\, France\, French & Haitian Creole w/ subtitles\, Color\, DCP)\n\n
Haiti\, 1962. A man is brought back from the dead only to be sent to the
living hell of the sugarcane fields. In Paris\, 55 years later\, a Haitia
n girl confesses a family secret to a group of white boarding school frie

and open-ended riff on the persistence of the colonial past.\n\n"Mixing
political commentary\, ethnography\, teenage melodrama and genre horror\,
the film is an unashamedly cerebral study of multiple themes - coloniali

intellectually demanding as it is compelling." -- Jonathan Romney\, Scree
