DESCRIPTION:Felicity Palma\nCassilhaus Travel Fellowship Presentation\n\nF
 riday\, August 30\n6:30pm\nRubenstein Arts Center\nFilm Theater\n\nPlease
join us Friday\, August 30 for a screening and artist talk from 2022 Cas
silhaus Travel Fellow and MFA|EDA alumna Felicity Palma.\n\nCreated with
the idea that travel can be transformative in the life of an emerging art
ist\, the grant offers a singular opportunity to broaden artistic and cul
tural experience beyond the traditional educational environment. The bie
nnial $10\,000 fellowship\, funded by Cassilhaus founders Ellen Cassilly
and Frank Konhaus\, supports Duke University MFAEDA graduates for an eigh
teen-month period in their artistic research and practice post MFA. With
her Cassilhaus Travel Fellowship\, Felicity Palma traveled to Puglia\, It
aly\, to work on a restaging of Kathy Acker's Orphic myth. Palma also con
ducted research at The Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Cult
ure through a residency at Duke's Rubenstein Library\, working with texts
by Kathy Acker and Eve Sedgwick. While back at Duke\, Felicity will also
be visiting classes and will join as guest respondent at the August 30 M

n\n"[Skip] Norman was a member of the inaugural cohort of students [inclu
ding Helke Sander\, Lothar Lambert\, and Harun Farocki] at Berlin's DFFB
Film School\, where he befriended and worked alongside a group of artists
and activists interested in the revolutionary potential of film ... Norm
an authored a remarkable but little-seen body of documentary\, experiment
al\, and essay filmmaking in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Building upo
n and contributing to the incendiary work of his peers decrying the US wa
r in Vietnam and racism back home\, Norman produced a number of equally u
rgent films about his experience as a Black artist inhabiting\, and obser
ving\, a double life on both sides of the Atlantic." - Jesse Cumming\n\nF

ut of a trip Norman took to West Africa in the late 1960s. Contrasting fo
otage of Berlin-notably the site of the 1884 conference that divided the
African continent among European powers-with archival colonial photograph
y and details of its brutality\, it later incorporates striking still pho
tographs Norman captured in his travels. His ground-eye view is paired wi
th a voiceover detailing the operation of neocolonial banking structures\

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening:\n\n"Evil Does Not Exist" [Aku wa sonzai shinai
 ]\n(Ryusuke Hamaguchi\, 2023\, 106 min\, Japan\, Japanese with English su
btitles\, DCP)\n\n-- Introduced by Prof. Kimberly Hassel (Asian & Middle
Eastern Studies)\n\nIn the rural alpine hamlet of Mizubiki\, not far from
Tokyo\, Takumi and his daughter\, Hana\, lead a modest life gathering wa
ter\, wood\, and wild wasabi for the local udon restaurant. Increasingly\
, the townsfolk become aware of a talent agency's plan to build an opulen
t glamping site nearby\, offering city residents a comfortable "escape" t
o the snowy wilderness. When two company representatives arrive and ask f
or local guidance\, Takumi becomes conflicted in his involvement\, as it
becomes clear that the project will have a pernicious impact on the commu
nity. Ryusuke Hamaguchi's follow up to his Academy Award-winning DRIVE MY
CAR is a foreboding fable on humanity's mysterious\, mystical relationsh
ip with nature. As sinister gunshots echo from the forest\, both the loca
ls and representatives confront their life choices and the haunting conse
quences they have.\n\n-- Winner of the Silver Lion (Grand Jury Prize) at
the 2023 Venice Film Festival\n\n"It's about how the indigo darkness of a
forest at night becomes a blanket\, and about how the arrival of strange
rs can change a place (or change the strangers)\, and about the idea of s
omething precious being forever lost." - Moira MacDonald\, Seattle Times\
n\n"As he's done before\, Hamaguchi gives us characters who are too compl
icated and richly drawn to be reduced to any one type. Yet that doesn't e
xplain how hauntingly different this movie feels from his other work." -
 Justin Chang\, NPR

CP)\n\nWhen her parents split and her father Kenichi moves out of their f
amily home\, Renko (Tomoko Tabata)\, a bright and energetic 6th grade gir
l\, is left alone with her mother\, Nazuna\, in Kyoto. As Nazuna sets out
new rules for their life together\, Renko makes plans of her own\, and s
ees to it that any changes happening in her family happen on her terms.\n
\nSince its premiere at Cannes in Un Certain Regard in 1993\, "Moving" ha
s been one Shinji Somai's most beloved films. \n\n- Winner of the Venice
Classics Award for Best Restored Film at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.\n
\n"Critic Shigehiko Hasumi once suggested that Japanese filmmaker Shinji
Somai - who died young aged 53 in 2001\, after directing 13 features - 'i
s the missing link between the end of the studio system of Japan and the
rise of independent filmmaking'. In their compassionate depictions of lon
eliness and alienation\, you can certainly see the influence of Somai's f
ilms in the works of several younger directors who followed\, including S
hunji Iwai ('All About Lily Chou-Chou') and Kiyoshi Kurosawa ('Pulse').\n
\n... [In 'Moving'\,] the domestic drama morphs into something altogether
more elemental and abstract in its incredible final half hour\, set arou
nd a countryside fire festival. Although most of Somai's film narratives
are told in a linear fashion\, there's a degree to which they all play wi
th the concept of time in some way. Temporality combined with the surreal
istic bending of reality and memory is key to much of Somai's work." - Jo
sh Slater-Williams\, BFI\n\n"Since his debut in 1980\, Shinji Somai is he
ld in the highest esteem by Japanese film fans\, just as it is\, let's fa
ce it\, impossible for anyone making cinema in Japan today not to have So
mai in mind." - Ryusuke Hamaguchi\, director of "Drive My Car" & "Evil Do
 es Not Exist".

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: "Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the Wo
 rld" (Radu Jude\, 2023\, 164 min\, Romania\, Romanian with English subtit
les\, DCP)As he proved with his scandalous\, scathing political comedy "B
ad Luck Banging or Loony Porn\," Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude is among th
e most radical filmmakers working today and one of the few unafraid to di
agnose the absurd evils and moral blind spots that make contemporary livi
ng what it-unfortunately-is. In his latest film\, Jude again explodes con
ventional boundaries of narrative and form\, this time charting a lacerat
ing course through one day in the life of a severely overworked film prod
uction assistant\, Angela\, who drives around Bucharest on her latest gig
: filming work accident victims auditioning to be in a safety equipment v
ideo for a German multinational corporation. At the same time\, the sleep
-deprived Angela upkeeps her own side project-a face-filtered\, trash-tal
king\, right-wing alter ego with more than 20\,000 viewers that serves as
the film's perverse Greek chorus. Intercutting all this with footage fro
m Romanian director Lucian Bratu's feminist 1981 film "Angela Moves On\,"
following the travels of a female cab driver around the city's same sigh
ts and locations\, Jude initiates a conversation with his country's past
and present\, while engaging in a meta-commentary about the ability of th
e captured image to exploit\, and to contort the truth. "Of the many thin
gs that make "Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World" exhilarat
ing\, from its egalitarian mix of high and low references to its delightf
ul profanity\, what stands out is its willingness to acknowledge the gene
ral horror of modern existence\, and then to suggest the only reasonable
response is to laugh." - Vulture "[Do Not Expect] feels like it has burst
spontaneously from the global unconscious\, a space where the real and t
he virtual mingle with increasing consent... [It is a] freewheeling\, unp
redictable movie that reminds us that\, while hope for humanity's future
may be futile\, it's still worth expecting something from cinema." - Cine
mascope "[Do Not Expect] aggressively interrogates the distinction betwee
n documentary and fiction-or\, to put it more directly\, the deceptive po
tential of recorded images... [The film confirms] Jude as one of the most
idiosyncratic\, uncompromising\, and intellectually vigorous of living f
 ilmmakers." - Slant

 glehart\, moderated by Professor Litzinger.\n\nAbout the film:\nJewher\,
a Uyghur teen from China with little English\, lands in the U.S. after sh
e is violently separated from her father at the Beijing airport as he is
detained. Abduweli\, a linguist and poet\, imprisoned and tortured for te

. The film honors those willing to speak out and poses difficult question
s that are imperatives in our inter-connected global economy of the 21st
century.\n\nAbout the speakers:\nJewher Ilham (Associate Producer) is an
author and advocate for the Uyghur community and for her imprisoned fathe

End Uyghur Forced Labour.\n\nJanice Englehart (Writer\, Producer) brings
together 10 years of collaboration with visual and performing artists in
China\, previous experience as a therapist and rights advocate\, and the
belief that creative storytelling is an essential tool to challenge power
dynamics that threaten our collective wellbeing.

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: \n\n"Lodestar: Phil Solomon\, in Memoriam"\n\n
An elegy and celebration of the life and work of extraordinary experiment

d collaborator Stan Brakhage. A twilight psalm for the man whose films so
elegantly expressed that what's out tonight is lost. \n\n==\nFilms to be
  screened:\n\n"Narrow Rivers\, Open Seas\, & Seventeen Sunsets (Silences
 for a Merchant Mariner)" (David Gatten\, 2016\, 8 minutes\, 16mm)\n\n"Onc

chary Barnes\, The Wall Street Journal\n\n"THE CONVERSATION was ripe for
the Watergate era...Coppola's wasn't the first movie to hang our anxietie

 9\, 145 min\, France\, French with English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n4K RESTORA
TION\n\nThe most personal film by the underworld poet Jean-Pierre Melvill
e\, who had participated in the French Resistance himself\, this tragic m
asterpiece\, based on a novel by Joseph Kessel\, recounts the struggles a
nd sacrifices of those who fought in the Resistance. Lino Ventura\, Paul
Meurisse\, Jean-Pierre Cassel\, and the incomparable Simone Signoret star
as intrepid underground fighters who must grapple with their conception
of honor in their battle against Hitler's regime. Long underappreciated i
n France and unseen in the United States\, the atmospheric and gripping t
hriller ARMY OF SHADOWS is now widely recognized as the summit of Melvill

create an unsparing tale of defiance in the face of seemingly insurmount

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening co-presented by Duke Experimental Film Society
and Screen/Society\n\nA selection of four short films exploring the inter
sections and limits of filmic form\, the human body\, and their shared su
rroundings by radical experimental filmmaker Teo Hernández (Ciudad Hidalg
 o\, Mexico\, 1939 - Paris\, France\, 1993)\, filmed in Super 8. \n\n"Hern
ández's films more closely resemble a torrid run of revelations than they
do tangible narratives to be dissected." - Joshua Peinado\n\n"Every imag
e returns to its origin: the void." - Teo Hernández\n\n\n===\nFilms to be
  screened:\n\n"Corps Aboli" (1978\, 16 min\, Digital File)\n\nThe purpose
of the film is to go beyond the notion of the body as a system of functi
ons\, symptoms and reflexes that try to delimit the whole body. The body\
, represented here with all its norms\, confronted with itself in a space
without causal references\, is leading to the abolition of its image and
the gushing of its inner source: it is the luminous core of the human bo
 dy. - Lightcone \n\n\n"Pas De Ciel" (1987\, 29 min\, 16mm)\n\n"Specially
made for the first Danse / Image event at Chateauvallon\, this film is th
e result of the meeting\, then the confrontation\, then finally the mirac
ulous agreement between the weightless\, vicious camera of Teo Hernández
and the improvisation of dancer-choreographer Bernardo Montet. A body bet
ween sea and sky\, the silent presence of the wind\, a few birds: element
s of a fundamental mythology transformed into lyrical abstraction." - Dom
 inique Noguez\n\n\n"Nuestra Señora de Paris" (1981-82\, 22 min\, 16mm)\n\
nMagical Super 8 (shown on 16mm) portrait of the Notre Dame cathedral fea
turing luminous light and a dense score incorporating players from the sq
 uare. \n\n\n"L'Eau de la Seine" (1982-83\, 11 min\, 16mm)\n\nThe water of
the Seine and its reflections appear like a luminous matter. The 'moving
' shooting technique gives the images plastic effects.

eminent image makers. On a stormy night in the mountains of Greece\, a pa

later\, after a tragic accident\, he is sent to prison\, where he meets
Iro. The two form a connection\, expressed through music\, that will\, by
turns\, haunt them and uphold them the rest of their days. Freely inspir
ed by the story of Oedipus\, Angela Schanelec's latest is as terrifying a
s myth and as gentle as a folk song.\n\n"An immaculate work of cinema...e
xquisitely shot and unimpeachably assembled."\n- Nicolas Rapold\, ArtForu

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: "The Burial of Natty Bumppo"\n\n(Fred Burns\,
 2023\, 28 min\, USA\, English\, DCP)\n\nBuilt from over 28\,000 hand-draw
n images\, "The Burial of Natty Bumppo" draws on 19th century cultural im
ages of American innocence to reveal their grotesque outcomes: the enslav
ement of human beings\, the genocide that accompanied colonization\, and
the environmental degradation resulting from industrialization. The film
almost never made it to screen - it was rescued\, restored\, and digitall
y mastered by filmmaker Casey Herbert in 2019\, and finished in 2023.\n\n
"The Burial of Natty Bumppo" has been shown at the Montreal International
Animation Film Festival (2023) and the Bucharest International Animation
Festival (2023). It won the awards for Best Animated Short at Indie Shor
t Fest in Los Angeles (2024)\, the California International Film Festival
(2024)\, and at the Paris International Short Awards (April 2024). Most
recently if was recognized with the "Outstanding Cultural Contribution in
a Short" from the Portland Festival of Cinema\, Animation & Technology\,
and "Best Animation Short" from the Vancouver International Shortfest.\n

\, Mapudungun with English subtitles.\n\nTraveling photographer Pedro is
a drawn\, taciturn type who prefers to let his camera do the talking. Whe
ther he's shooting a coy bride or a gang of white huntsmen posing with th

eeking composed perfection in the most rattling of images. The film conju
res ravishing beauty from hellish historical ugliness\, though it's mindf
ul throughout of the camera's conspiratorial capacity for violence. A fil

and political rigor. The film largely avoids grisly imagery of the Selk'n

colonialism is so often sanitized and selectively presented.\n\nShown wit

DESCRIPTION:HOUSE [HAUSU]\n(Nobuhiko Obayashi\, 1977\, 88 min\, Japan\, Ja
 panese with English subtitles\, 35mm)\n\nSpecial 35MM Screening!\n\nA wor
k of dense visual and technical complexity\, HOUSE is perhaps best rememb
ered as a psychedelic\, cinematic pop-up fairytale of the Grimm brothers
variety\, but Obayashi's darkly comic fable of seven schoolgirls is decep
tive in its simplicity. While the girls' stay in a haunted house results
in a series of sinister\, stylized\, and undeniably silly slashings\, HOU
SE subtly explores the wartime trauma their parents' generation endured.
A midnight movie turned cult classic\, House - with its hypercinematic un
reality of candy-coloured skies\, optically printed collages\, and rapid
fire editing - is undoubtedly best experienced on film.\n\n"A head-on col
lision between THE EVIL DEAD (1981) and YELLOW SUBMARINE (1968) - a fever
ed flight of horror-fantasy like no other." - Sarah Cleary\, BFI\n\n"Disn
ey had his seven dwarves\, Kurosawa his seven samurai. For Obayashi (with
the help of his eleven-year-old daughter\, Chigumi\, who provided many o
f the story ideas)\, it was seven teenage damsels in distress - CARRIE ra
ised to the seventh power\, SUSPIRIA spiraling ever upward into some psyc
hedelic seventh heaven. HOUSE is a film that must be seen to be believed\
, and then seen again to believe that you really did see what you think y
ou saw." - Chuck Stephens\, Criterion

DESCRIPTION:POSSESSION\n(Andrzej Żuławski\, 1981\, 124 min\, France/German
 y\, English\, French\, and German with English subtitles\, 35mm)\n\nSpeci
al 35mm Screening!\n\nBanned upon its original release in 1981\, Andrzej
Żuławski's stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is
an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Sam Neill) return
s to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani\, in a r
ole that earned her Best Actress at Cannes) insistent on a divorce. As An
na's frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming\, Mark discovers a trut
h far more sinister than his wildest suspicions. With its pulsating score
\, visceral imagery\, and some of the most haunting performances ever cap
tured on screen\, POSSESSION is cinematic delirium at its most intoxicati
ng.\n\nIsabelle Adjani\, winner of Best Actress at the 1981 Cannes Film F
estival\n\n"It isn't the operatic physical violence that we witness happe
ning in POSSESSION that's so unnerving. It's the psychic violence that pe
ople inflict on each other when a union is rendered asunder - the kind th
at makes someone going ballistic in a subway station seem tame by compari
son - that makes this movie feel so painful\, and so precise in terms of
pushing hard on your pressure points. See it with someone you loathe." -

DESCRIPTION:EVENT HORIZON\n(Paul W.S. Anderson\, 1997\, 96 min\, USA/UK\,
English\, DCP)\n\nEVENT HORIZON initially bombed amongst critics and audi
 ences alike\, but in time\, Anderson's gnarly\, unforgettable\, sci-fi/ho
rror crossover has grown considerably in reputation. Starring Sam Neill\,
Laurence Fishburne\, and a spaceship that returns from a journey through
Hell\, Event Horizon offers a fascinating cautionary tale about our inab
ility to let go of the past\, a tale enhanced by a cast that brings real
depth to what might\, on paper\, have looked like fairly disposable genre
work.\n\n"EVENT HORIZON is surprisingly alive and occasionally poetic in
its imagery. Anderson successfully conjures his creepy atmosphere with f
lash cuts to disturbing violence\, minimal use of digital effects\, and a
Bava-meets-Kubrick production design. Above all\, EVENT HORIZON is unner
ving." - Patrick Dahl\, Screen Slate

in October 1956\, when 47 innocent civilians were shot and killed by Isra
eli Border Police soldiers. Through a gripping narrative structure\, like
a suspenseful legal drama\, the film unfolds the historical\, political\
, and psychological reality that had shaped and triggered the event. A ci
nematic montage created by the intertwined plotlines\, emphasizes immense
gaps\, conflicting narrative\, and deep divides between Jews and Arabs w
ho are destined to live together on the same land. If we begin to recogni
ze these gaps\, will there be hope for reconciliation?

DESCRIPTION:Together with the department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studie
 s\, APSI is hosting a screening of "Invisible Nation" (看不見的國家)\, a 2024 d
ocumentary from award-winning filmmaker Vanessa Hope that shines an urgen
t spotlight on Taiwan as it fights for autonomy and freedom from fear.\n\
nAbout the film:\nWith unprecedented access to Taiwan's sitting head of s
tate\, director Vanessa Hope investigates the election and tenure of Tsai
Ing-wen\, the first female president of Taiwan. Thorough\, incisive and
bristling with tension\, Invisible Nation is a living account of Tsai's t
ightrope walk as she balances the hopes and dreams of her nation between
the colossal geopolitical forces of the U.S. and China.\n\nHope's restrai
ned observational style captures Tsai at work in her country's vibrant de
mocracy at home\, while seeking full international recognition of Taiwan'
s right to exist. At a time when Russia's invasion of Ukraine has demonst
rated the ever-present threat of authoritarian aggression\, Invisible Nat
ion brings punctual focus to the struggle of Taiwan as it fights for auto
nomy and freedom from fear.\n\nAbout the panelists:\nCarlos Rojas (modera
tor) is a Professor of Chinese Cultural Studies in the department of Asia

ce in Chinese and Japanese Cultural Studies at Duke University\, and one
of the founding directors of Story Lab at Duke. She is currently the Dire
ctor of Graduate Studies for Duke Asian Pacific Studies Institute's East

DESCRIPTION:RUMOURS\n\n(Guy Maddin\, Evan Johnson\, and Galen Johnson\, 20
 24\, 103 min\, Canada\, English\, DCP)\n\nRicocheting between comedy\, ap
ocalyptic horror\, and swooning soap opera\, RUMOURS follows the seven le
aders of the world's wealthiest democracies at the annual G7 summit\, whe
re they attempt to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisi
 s. With unexpected\, uproarious performances from a brilliant ensemble ca
st that includes Cate Blanchett\, Alicia Vikander\, and Charles Dance\, t
hese so-called leaders become spectacles of incompetence\, contending wit
h increasingly surreal obstacles in the misty woods as night falls and th
ey realize they are suddenly alone. A genre-hopping satire of political i
neptitude\, the latest film from incomparable directors Guy Maddin\, Evan
Johnson and Galen Johnson is a journey into the absurd heart of power an
d institutional failure in a slowly burning world.\n\n"The ineffectivenes
s of rhetorical politics and symbolic diplomacy is kookily but ruthlessly
skewered in RUMOURS\, a wildly entertaining shaggy-dog satire." - Variet
 y\n\n"Effortlessly hilarious and deceptively thought-provoking." - Robert
  Daniels

DESCRIPTION:CHARADE\n(Stanley Donen\, 1963\, 113 min\, USA\, English\, 35m
 m)\n\nSpecial 35mm Screening!\n\nAfter her estranged husband's murder\, j
et-setter Regina (Audrey Hepburn) is pursued by three crooks who want the
money her husband stole from them. With her life in jeopardy\, she turns
to charming stranger Peter (Cary Grant) for help\, but soon discovers he
isn't who he claims to be\, and that his own agenda is far from clear. A
Hitchcockian confection from producer-director Stanley Donen\, CHARADE (
1963) stands apart in an era of spy films resplendent with macho-driven e
roticism (the James Bond series)\, cynicism (Michael Caine's Harry Palmer
series)\, and farcical irreverence (Casino Royale\; the Flint movies\, w
ith CHARADE costar James Coburn)\, by placing a woman at its center.\n\n"
Shot by Charles Lang\, one of the greatest American cinematographers to e
ver live\, CHARADE is some sort of miraculous entertainment\, self-aware
and self-parodying yet never distancing or detached. Hepburn is the audie
nce's funny and flighty proxy\, allowing us the great pleasure of being s
educed by Grant's unpredictable charmer." - Chris Cabin\, Slant \n\n"CHAR
ADE presents us with a temporary entry into that brighter place\, into th
e possibility of adventure\, the vicarious possession of beauty. Acted by
  two Europeans in a mythic\, dangerous\, beguiling Paris\, it remains a q
uintessential Hollywood film." - Michael Newton\, The Guardian

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening:\n\n"LYD"\n(Rami Younis and Sarah Emma Friedlan
 d\, 2023\, 79 min\, Palestine\, Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles\
, DCP)\n\nLYD (the Arabic name of Lod\, a city now in Israel) is about a
5\,000-year-old bustling Palestinian town that was taken over when Israel
was established in 1948. An exploration of what it once was\, and what i
t is now\, in the context of the continuing conflicts and the war in Gaza
\, LYD's excavation of one community's complex history offers us not only
lessons\, but possible futures.\n\nMade by a Palestinian from Lyd and a
Jewish American\, LYD provides much-needed context for this moment\, as i
t goes deep into the history of the Nakba from the perspective of Palesti
nians who survived. The film imagines an alternate reality where Palestin
e was never occupied and Palestinians of all religions (Muslims\, Christi
ans\, and Jews) live in a liberated Palestine. Narrated by Palestinian ac
tress Maisa Abd Elhadi who personifies the city\, the viewer is guided th
rough the lifespan of a five-thousand-year-old city and its residents.\n\
n"The story of LYD is the story of Palestine. The film that bears its nam
e confronts the horrors of what is\, without losing sight of what could b
e-a vital exercise in political imagination." - Arielle Angel\, Editor-in
-chief of Jewish Currents\n\n"A poignant\, compellingly speculative film.
.. LYD offers a deep political education through eyewitness accounts\, an
d personal stories\, and an unwavering look into the heart of empire and
the ongoing project of settler colonization. A must-see." - Autumn Brown\

DESCRIPTION:LONE STAR\n(John Sayles\, 1996\, 135 min\, USA\, DCP)\n\nNew 4
 K Restoration\n\nA keen observer of America's social fabric\, writer-dire
ctor John Sayles uncovers the haunted past buried beneath a small Texas b
order town in this sprawling neowestern mystery. When a skeleton is disco
vered in the desert\, lawman Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper)\, son of a legendar
y local sheriff\, begins an investigation that will have profound implica
tions both for him personally and for all of Rio County\, a place still r
eckoning with its history of racial violence. Sayles's masterful film-nov
elistic in its intricacy and featuring a brilliant ensemble cast\, includ
ing Joe Morton\, Elizabeth Peña\, and Kris Kristofferson-quietly subverts
national mythmaking and lays bare the fault lines of life at the border.
\n\n"Sayles is able to touch on the humanity of each [character] and the
details of the region -- the heat\, the beautiful but often unforgiving l
andscape\, and especially the pride of the residents -- are vivid and tru
e." - Austin Chronicle\n\n"John Sayles' LONE STAR contains so many riches
\, it humbles ordinary movies. And yet they aren't thrown before us\, to
dazzle and impress: It is only later\, thinking about the film\, that we
appreciate the full reach of its material." - Roger Ebert

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening:\n\n"THE COW"\n(Dariush Mehrjui\, 1969\, 104 mi
n\, Iran\, Farsi with English subtitles\, Digital)\n\nOne of the defining
works of the Iranian New Wave\, THE COW (1969) follows a farmer named Ha
ssan\, whose only source of joy and livelihood is his cow. When the cow i
s mysteriously killed one night\, a metamorphosis ensues. Based on short
stories by psychiatrist Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi\, Mehruji's landmark featur
e melds neorealism\, surrealism\, and mysticism in a deeply moving explor
ation of solitude\, obsession\, and grief. The Cow was funded by the Iran
ian government\, yet was immediately banned after completion due to its n
egative portrayal of rural Iranian poverty. The film was smuggled to the
Venice Film Festival in 1971 where it won the FIPRESCI or critics' prize\
, rapidly gaining international recognition as a masterpiece thereafter.
Poignantly wrapped in layers of religion and leftist politics (two major
forces of the 1979 revolution)\, THE COW charted a new future for Iranian
  cinema.\n\nCannes Film Festival\, Director's Fortnight\, 1971\nFIPRESCI
 Prize\, Venice Film Festival\, 1971\nOCIC Award - Recommendation\, Berli
 n International Film Festival\, 1972\n\n"More than a mellifluous flow\, T
HE COW lingers in the mind as a collection of intrusions and interruption
s: images of hands emerging comically out of darkened windows to serve af
ternoon tea\; a group of village elders peering pensively into a barn win
 dow\, crammed into a symmetric\, planimetric frame within a frame\; the w
rinkled faces of the elderly women (presumably non-actors) who carry out
a ritual mourning\, and then later prepare for the celebratory wedding ri
tes. There's a tactility to such images\, to say nothing of the unexpecte
dly open narrative that contains it\, all creating the distinct impressio
n of a filmmaker exploring a set of expressive\, expansive possibilities.

DESCRIPTION:ANORA\n(Sean Baker\, 2024\, 139 min\, USA\, English\, DCP)\n\n
 In a thrilling\, star-making performance\, Mikey Madison plays Ani\, a to
ugh-as-nails exotic dancer from Brighton Beach suddenly thrust into the l
ap of luxury when she's whisked away on a whirlwind romance with Ivan (Ma
rk Eydelshteyn)\, an obscenely wealthy young customer at her strip club.
However\, Ivan turns out to be the spoiled scion of Russian oligarchs\, a
nd Ani's wild ride is anything but your average rags-to-riches story. Bak
er always takes a good-natured\, sociological approach to his subject mat
ter and milieu\, and here he has created an authentic 21st-century screwb
all comedy that tackles sex\, love\, class\, and money with matter-of-fac
t directness.\n\n-- Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Fest
ival\n\n"...a pure shot of frenetic pleasure\, a New York odyssey that is
the most immersive and accomplished comic adventure yet from American or
iginal Sean Baker." - Film at Lincoln Center\n\n"In focusing on a broad s
wath of sex workers and their hardscrabble realities [...] Baker has made
the case\, in movie after movie\, that there is no tougher\, more resour
ceful\, and more cruelly stigmatized labor force under the sun." - Justin
  Chang\, The New Yorker
