DESCRIPTION:Duke Experimental Film Society & Screen/Society present a rare
special screening of:\n\nÀ L'OMBRE DE LA CANAILLE BLEUE ("In the Shadow
 of the Blue Rascal")\n(Pierre Clementi\, 1986\, 84 min\, France\, French
with English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n"Pierre Clémenti's sole feature as a dir
ector is a dystopian crime story\, inspired by William S. Burroughs\, set
in the underbelly of "Nécrocity." In this fictionalized Paris\, fueled b
y heroin and paranoia\, an insurgent group (played by Clémenti's inner ci
rcle) tries to keep one step ahead of the grip of state power\, whose mas
termind is a villainous military leader played by Clémenti himself ... Dr
enched in neon lights and leather\, In the Shadow of the Blue Rascal evok
es the New York No Wave scene while giving "the most punk\, the most urba
n\, and the most willingly chaotic portrait of Paris in the late 1970s" (
Philippe Azoury)." - MoMA\n\n"In Necrocity\, 300 kilos of heroin are miss
ing\, the police jump to action. Here\, the state is merely a means to ef
ficiently impose cruel police brutality and arbitrary violence\, and an u
nderground of club-goers indulge in drugs\, parties\, and sex. A murderer
is on the loose in this dystopian future city\, and crime is about to ri
se to a fever pitch." - Clinton Street Theater\n\n"A harsh icy descent in
to the depths of hell." - Close-Up Film Centre\n\nCourtesy of the Cinémat
 hèque française and Balthazar Clementi.

DESCRIPTION:ANORA\n(Sean Baker\, 2024\, 139 min\, USA\, English\, DCP)\n\n
 In a thrilling\, star-making performance\, Mikey Madison plays Ani\, a to
ugh-as-nails exotic dancer from Brighton Beach suddenly thrust into the l
ap of luxury when she's whisked away on a whirlwind romance with Ivan (Ma
rk Eydelshteyn)\, an obscenely wealthy young customer at her strip club.
However\, Ivan turns out to be the spoiled scion of Russian oligarchs\, a
nd Ani's wild ride is anything but your average rags-to-riches story. Bak
er always takes a good-natured\, sociological approach to his subject mat
ter and milieu\, and here he has created an authentic 21st-century screwb
all comedy that tackles sex\, love\, class\, and money with matter-of-fac
t directness.\n\n-- Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Fest
ival\n\n"...a pure shot of frenetic pleasure\, a New York odyssey that is
the most immersive and accomplished comic adventure yet from American or
iginal Sean Baker." - Film at Lincoln Center\n\n"In focusing on a broad s
wath of sex workers and their hardscrabble realities [...] Baker has made
the case\, in movie after movie\, that there is no tougher\, more resour
ceful\, and more cruelly stigmatized labor force under the sun." - Justin
  Chang\, The New Yorker

ced by Prof. Ara Wilson (Gender\, Sexuality & Feminist Studies/Cultural A

at a family grappling with clashing values and dynamics as they face the
impending loss of their matriarch.\n\n"[T]he movie's sunny\, gracious por
trait of family life will still likely have you thinking of your own fami
ly long before the credits roll." - rogerebert.com\n\n"[HOW TO MAKE MILLI
ONS] is designed to play on the heartstrings\; but when a film is plucked
with such dexterity\, warmth\, and tenderness it is a sweet symphony fil
ling the soul instead of jangling noise hoping for a reaction." - Nadine

DESCRIPTION:GOOD ONE\n(India Donaldson\, 2024\, 90 min\, USA\, English\, D
CP)\n\n"A seemingly small incident has monumental implications in the ext
raordinary feature debut of India Donaldson\, a film of expertly harnesse
d naturalism and restrained emotional intensity. Seventeen-year-old high
school senior Sam (a revelatory Lily Collias) has agreed to join her fath
er Chris (James Le Gros) and his longtime buddy Matt (Danny McCarthy) on
a camping trip in the Catskills\, though she'd rather be hanging with her
friends for the weekend. Affable and wise\, Sam at first seems to enjoy
the intergenerational bonding experience with the two divorced dads\, yet
the men's own festering\, middle-aged resentments begin to change the em
otional tenor of the trip-until something happens that alters Sam's perce
ption of the men and her place in their orbit. Amidst the lush beauty and
contemplative forest atmosphere in upstate New York\, GOOD ONE asks prov
ocative questions about the dynamics of family\, friendship\, and what it
means to engage in or avoid conflict." - Film at Lincoln Center\n\n"GOOD
ONE is a quiet movie\, not because it has little to say but because it w
ants you to listen\, to pay as much attention to what's left unsaid as to
its meticulously crafted dialogue\, and to the way silence can be a powe
 r as well as a punishment." - Slate\n\n"Subtly dark\, humorous\, and wise
\, GOOD ONE leans into its wilderness backdrop in all of its liberating (

DESCRIPTION:ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA\n(Tsui Hark\, 1991\, 135 min\, Hong
 Kong\, Cantonese w/ English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n-- Introduction by Prof.
Eileen Cheng-yin Chow (Asian & Middle Eastern Studies)\n\nOne of the pinn
acles of Hong Kong cinema's 1990s golden age\, Tsui Hark's riotously ente
rtaining epic was a blockbuster hit that cemented Jet Li's status as the
greatest martial-arts superstar of his generation. Li displays his stunni
ng\, fast-and-fluid fighting style as the legendary martial-arts teacher
and doctor Wong Fei-hung\, who\, with a band of disciples\, battles a hos
t of nefarious forces-foreign and local-who are threatening Chinese sover
eignty as British and American imperialists encroach upon the Mainland. O
NCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA's breathtaking blend of kung fu\, comedy\, roman
ce\, and melodrama climaxes in a whirlwind guns-vs-fists finale that is a
lso a thrilling affirmation of Chinese cultural identity.\n\n"Tsui Hark i
s the John Ford of Chinese cinema\, and ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA is his
Stagecoach. Not only does it redefine a genre on the cusp of its rebirth
(in this case the period martial arts film\, which had lain dormant throu
gh the late 80s much as the Western had been relegated to cheap serials t
hrough the 1930s)\, but it expresses a total historical vision entirely t
hrough archetypes\, which are by turns deepened and confounded." - Sean G

DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2025 French Film Festival\nJan 30 - F
 eb 13\, 2025\n\nANATOMY OF A FALL\n(Justine Triet\, 2023\, 151 min\, Fran
 ce\, French w/ English subtitles and English\, DCP)\n\n-- Winner of the P
 alme d'Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival\n\nJustine Triet's drama is a
riveting procedural and a delicate inquiry into the impossibility of an u
ltimate truth in human relationships. When the husband of famous novelist
Sandra Voyter (played by Toni Erdmann's Sandra Hüller) is found dead on
the ground outside their chalet in the French Alps\, authorities suspect
that she might have been responsible\, as the impact and position of his
body suggest a push rather than a fall. Triet's fiercely intelligent\, em
otionally devastating film dissects the ways we create subjective narrati
ves for ourselves and others and questions the insufficiency of language
to describe the essential mysteries each of us possesses. At its core is
the brilliant Hüller\, whose Sandra is articulate\, open\, and utterly in
scrutable.\n\n"An intricately layered\, surgically controlled drama that
operates as both a courtroom thriller and an investigation of the mysteri
ous recesses of domestic life." - The Hollywood Reporter\n\n"[A] Hitchcoc
kian thriller for today." - New Statesman

DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2025 French Film Festival\nJan 30 - F
 eb 13\, 2025\n\nORLANDO\, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY\n(Paul B. Preciado\, 202
 3\, 103 min\, France\, French w/ English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n-- Introduce
d by Prof. Eric Disbro (Romance Studies)\n\n"Come\, come! I'm sick to dea
th of this particular self. I want another." Taking Virginia Woolf's nove
l "Orlando: A Biography" as its starting point\, academic virtuoso turned
filmmaker Paul B. Preciado has fashioned the documentary\, ORLANDO\, MY
POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY\, as a personal essay\, historical analysis\, and soc
ial manifesto which premiered and took home four prizes at the 2023 Berli
 n Film Festival. For almost a century\, Woolf's eponymous hero/heroine ha
s inspired readers for their gender fluidity across physical and spiritua
l metamorphoses over a 300-year lifetime. Preciado casts a diverse cross-
section of more than twenty trans and non-binary individuals in the role
of Orlando as they perform interpretations of scenes from the novel\, wea
ving into Woolf's narrative their own stories of identity and transition.
Not content to simply update a seminal work\, Preciado interrogates the
relevance of Orlando in the continuing struggle against anti-trans ideolo
gies and in the fight for global trans rights. Fleet and visually inventi
ve\, Preciado's film is a robust polemical inquiry into contemporary tran
s personhood and political disenfranchisement that points the way toward
 a possible utopia.\n\n"[S]parklingly intelligent\, Godard-puckish and mov
ing\, capable of deadpan wit and the most intimate swirl of ideas and emo
tions." - Los Angeles Times\n\n"ORLANDO\, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY is a div
e into the collective trans consciousness\, a discussion between Orlandos
across time and place\, an attempt to discover new ways to understand an
d express ourselves." - Little White Lies

long-awaited follow-up to LOVE AT FIRST FIGHT (2014)\, Thomas Cailley\,
who most recently won Best Director at the 29th Lumière Awards in France\
, envisions a mysterious infection that selectively mutates the bodies of
ordinary people into animal hybrids at unpredictable speeds. Nominated f

scenario\, conjured with vivid specificity and immediacy via dazzling\, i
mpeccably deployed special effects\, serves as a relentlessly compelling
backdrop to the central performances of Romain Duris (THE THREE MUSKETEER
S)\, Paul Kircher (the breakout star of Christophe Honoré's WINTER BOY)\,
and Adèle Exarchopoulos (BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR\, PASSAGES\, PLANET B

Anne-Gaëlle Saliot (Romance Studies) and Mathilde Savard-Corbeil (Romanc

d evades solution. Recently promoted Captain Yohan Vivès (Bastien Bouillo
 n) faces such an elusive mystery when he investigates the gruesome murder
of a young woman named Clara in the French town of Grenoble. It is clear
that the attack was premeditated\, and the violent nature of the crime s
uggests revenge. All the evidence points towards a scorned ex-lover\, but
which one? Vivés' team methodically digs through the details of Clara's
life\, uncovering her secrets while striving to weed out the killer.\n\n-
 - Winner of 6 César Awards in 2023\, including Best Film\, Best Direction
\, and Best Adaptation\n\n"[THE NIGHT OF THE 12TH] assumes the perspectiv

ol investigative professionalism (and\, in a sense\, the film's) register
s as its own kind of complicity in a wretched\, man's-world status quo."

ive police work is a cry from the heart against a broken system." - Time

ies\, UNC-CH)\n\nIn a rural village in Senegal\, Banel (Khady Mane) is ha
ppily married to Adama (Mamadou Diallo)\, the younger brother of her dece
ased first husband. Though their love is passionate\, the relationship is
tested by pressures from the community\, which expects Banel to assume t
raditionally feminine domestic responsibilities\, while her husband is me
ant to inherit the role of village chief from his late brother. Both youn
g adults resist the mandate to fill these assigned duties\, incurring dis
approval from those around them-and possibly triggering supernatural repe
rcussions. In her Palme d'Or nominated feature debut\, Senegalese-French
writer-director Ramata-Toulaye Sy conjures lyrical imagery reminiscent of
Terrence Malick's DAYS OF HEAVEN\, placing two memorable young lovers ag
ainst a landscape as beautiful as it is inscrutable.\n\n"A dreamlike debu

Prof. Cybelle McFadden (French and Francophone Studies\, UNCG)\n\nClaire
Denis's rarely screened second feature is a radically physical cinematic
journey into the shadowy (under)world of illegal cockfighting. Isaach De
Bankole and Alex Descas star as Dah and Jocelyn\, two immigrants (from Be
nin and French Antilles\, respectively) living on the outskirts of Paris
who earn money from cockfights. The escalating violence of the bouts-at t
he encouragement of the white owner of the restaurant (Jean-Claude Brialy
) in whose basement the fights are held-takes its toll on the pair\, and
Jocelyn dreams of a life outside the brutal environment of feathered pugi
lism. Drawing inspiration from the writings of Frantz Fanon\, the ruggedl
y unsentimental and psychologically evocative NO FEAR\, NO DIE is a force
ful examination of the lives of immigrants in France and of the psychic t
oll of the violence imposed by colonizers upon the colonized.\n\n"Denis's

d of violence and exploitation." - Slant Magazine

DESCRIPTION:-- Presented by Duke Experimental Film Society and Screen/Soci
ety\n\n"Lyrical and uncompromising\, the films of Jocelyne Saab (1948-201
 9) are at once landmark works of Lebanese cinema and masterpieces of the
essay film form. The poetic voiceovers of her movies recall Chris Marker\
, and her fragmented\, diaristic images are reminiscent of Jonas Mekas. B
ut Saab's poetic vision\, and her intimate interactions with the displace
d\, the exiled\, and the voiceless\, mark her films as uniquely her own.
Trained as a radio and television journalist\, Saab turned her attention
to nonfiction films in the wake of the Lebanese Civil War. Her epic\, imp
ressionistic trilogy of documentaries about Beirut that followed captures
a city at once wounded\, mournful\, and bristling with life and energy\,
chronicling a moment at which "a kind of bitter poetry has replaced the
carelessness of the past." - Film at Lincoln Center\n\nProgram: \n"Beirut

DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2025 French Film Festival\nJan 30 - F

 2024\, 75 min\, USA\, English and French w/English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n--
Q&A to follow with Prof. Franklin Cason\, Jr. (Art\, Art History & Visua
l Studies)\n\n"We are making a film about an artist who didn't want to be
remembered\," says Zita Hanrot\, the actress playing an actress grapplin
g with the legacy of the real-life figure she's supposed to be playing: t
he Martinique writer Suzanne Césaire. Overshadowed by her husband\, the p
oet and politician Aimé Césaire\, Suzanne was a feminist activist as well
as a member of the Négritude movement in Paris in the 1930s. For her bol
 d project of reclamation\, filmmaker Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich has taken a m
etacinematic and mesmerizing approach\, using voice-over and direct addre
ss to evoke her writing\, as well as meditative\, immersive 16mm images o
f forests in Martinique to burrow to the complex truths about a woman\, a
rtist\, and mother forgotten to history. Uniting Hunt-Ehrlich's elegant n
arrative and visual strands is the presence of Hanrot\, herself a new mot
her going through her own reckoning.\n\n"Hunt-Ehlich's lovely\, questing\
, curious art film cannot singlehandedly redress Césaire's omission from
the annals. But it does suggest that if posterity has forgotten her\, it'
s only with its conscious mind\, where THE BALLAD OF SUZANNE CÉSAIRE is p
iped in from the collective unconscious. Perhaps\, when history sleeps on
those who shaped it\, this is what it dreams." - Jessica Kiang\, Variety

often headily non-verbal filmmaking trusts us to feel the lovers' ennui
and melancholy - and further\, to identify it within ourselves - via its
sheer accumulation of sounds\, images and sense memories: be it the damp
wraiths of steam swirling from an opened noodle container\, the warm\, vi
nyl-roughened croon of Nat King Cole on the soundtrack or the impossible
lobby-card beauty of Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung\, both preserved here i
n their ravishing prime\, and somehow convincing as ordinary mortals made
movie-star beautiful by love." - Guy Lodge\, BFI

l Abraham (also two of the film's directors)\, the collective commits its

DESCRIPTION:THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG\n(Mohammad Rasoulof\, 2024\, 166 mi
 n\, Germany/Iran/France\, Farsi w/English subtitles\, DCP)\n\nA target of
Iran's hardline conservative government for his films' criticism of the
state\, director Mohammad Rasoulof fled his home country to avoid an eigh
t-year prison sentence\, though he hadn't finished editing his latest fil
m yet. His searing drama THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG is every bit as urgen
t and gripping as its real-life backstory would portend: Investigating ju
dge Iman grapples with paranoia amid political unrest in Tehran. When his
gun vanishes\, he suspects his wife and daughters\, imposing draconian m
easures that strain family ties as societal rules crumble. Both paranoia
thriller and domestic drama\, THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG is above all an
epic of anti-patriarchal political conviction.\n\n- Winner of the Prix Sp
écial and FIPRESCI prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival\n\n"Rasoulof cr
afts an extraordinarily gripping allegory about the corrupting costs of p
ower and the suppression of women under a religious patriarchy that crush
es the very people it claims to protect." - Ryan Lattanzio\, IndieWire\n\
n"THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG asks us to enter a family's story\, but also
to acknowledge that we are part of it. We're extras in the background\,
no matter how far away we are. For Rasoulof\, the world he's created is f
ar from theoretical. The consequences have been\, too." - Alissa Wilkinso

at life.\n\nDirector's Statement:\n"I witnessed so many animals died as I
  made a documentary about zoos. Yet\, for several reasons\, I couldn't in

course of five years\, provides a harrowing account of the systematic ons
laught of destruction experienced by Masafer Yatta\, a group of Palestini
an villages in the southern West Bank\, at the hands of the Israeli milit
ary. Headed by Palestinian activist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuv
al Abraham (also two of the film's directors)\, the collective commits it
self to filming and protesting the demolitions of homes and schools and t
he resulting displacement of their inhabitants\, which were carried out t
o make way for Israeli military training ground. In addition to the indel
ible footage of destruction and expulsion captured by its undaunted witne
sses\, NO OTHER LAND serves as a moving portrait of friendship between Ad
ra and Abraham\, who form a philosophical and political alliance despite
the drastic differences in their abilities to exist freely in this world.
\n\n-- 2025 Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature\n\n"NO OTH
ER LAND\, while maintaining a tight focus on the fate of one village and
on the bond between two men on either side of the Israel-Palestine divide

p in one word: 'power'." - Richard Brody\, THE NEW YORKER

DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED TO FEBRUARY 28--ALL ISSUED TICKETS WILL BE HONORED\n
\nIf you can no longer attend\, please write tickets@duke.edu to release
your ticket.\n\nBasel Adra\, a Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta in
the West Bank\, has been fighting the mass expulsion by Israel's occupat
ion since childhood. He documents the slow-motion eradication of the vill
ages in his home region\, where soldiers deployed by the Israeli governme
nt are gradually demolishing houses and driving out their residents. Even
tually\, he meets Yuval\, an Israeli journalist\, who supports him in his
efforts. An unlikely alliance develops. However\, the relationship betwe
en the two is strained by the enormous inequality between them: Basel liv
es under military occupation\, while Yuval lives without restrictions. \n
\nA Palestinian-Israeli collective made this Academy Award-nominated film
\, an act of creative resistance on the path to greater justice. \n\nTher
e will be a post-screening panel with Palestinian filmmaker Hareth Yousef
and Prof. Rebecca Stein. \n\nThe screening is free but registration is r
equired. The link is under MORE EVENT INFORMATION and will be live after
 11 am on Wednesday\, February 26).

DESCRIPTION:Directed by Hu Sanshou\, 2024\, 115 min\, China\, in Chinese d
 ialects w/ Chinese & English subtitles\n\nFollowing the screening\, stay
for Q&A with director Hu Sanshou\, moderated by Professor Guo-Juin Hong (
 AMES).\n\nAbout the film:\nIn 2022\, a new highway project was about to c
ut across my hometown\, serving as a symbol of modernization itself. The
deceased resting beneath were facing displacement. I documented the unear
thing of graves and interviewed villagers about their memories of the dea
d.\n\nThrough the narratives of villagers\, I pieced together the lives o
f the deceased and recreated a picture of the past appearance of our home
town. By imagining the circumstances of those who had passed on\, I was a
ble to draw a portrait of the deceased. This contemplation of the past le
ads to a question: where will our future lead us?\n\nAwards\n-2024 TIDF "
Salute! Chinese independent Documentaries" (shortlisted)\n\nDirector's St
atement:\n\n"The highway surged into my hometown with relentless momentum
\, beyond my power to oppose or obstruct. Thus photography becomes a form
of rebellion and silent testimony. With each click of the shutter\, the
questions raised by this rapid construction grow more profound and more e
lusive. \n\nThe highway hastens the comings and goings of people. I canno
t dictate the starting point of my journey through life\, but I can choos
e where to return. For me\, returning to my hometown is a life action\, b
ecause hometown is an eternal mystery."\n\nAbout the Director:\n\nHu Sans
hou was born in Shaanxi province. He studied cinematography at Xi'an Acad
emy of Fine Arts and graduated in 2015. He joined the Folk Memory Project
in 2013. Other films include "Mountain Village" (2013)\, and "Legend" (2
 015).\n\nIn 2018\, his film\, "Dumb Man\," was shortlisted for the TIDF "
Salute! Chinese independent Documentaries." In 2021\, his documentary\, "
The Burrows\," was shortlisted for the Envision Competition at IDFA 2021.
  The film also won the Grand Prize at the TIDF Asian Vision Competition\;
2022 Jury Special Mention.\n\nHu is also affiliated with a network of do
cumentary filmmakers contributing to the Memory Project\, a portion of wh
ich is housed at the Duke University library.\n\n**This event is sponsore

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening presented by Duke Experimental Film Society & S
 creen/Society:\n\n*CORPUS CALLOSUM\n(Michael Snow\, 2002\, 92 min\, Canad
 a\, English\, 16mm)\n\n*CORPUS CALLOSUM\, the film (or tape\, or projecte
 d light work)\, is constructed of\, de-picts\, creates\, examines\, prese
 nts\, consists of\, and is\, 'betweens'. Between beginning and ending\, b
etween 'natural' and 'artificial'\, between fiction and fact\, between he
 aring and seeing\, between 1956 and 2002. It's a tragi-comedy of the cine
matic variables. *CORPUS CALLOSUM juxtaposes or counterpoints a realism o
f normal metamorphosis (two extreme examples: pregnancy\, explosions) in
believable\, 'real' interior spaces with 'impossible' shape changes (some
made possible with digital animation). First the camera\, then we in the
audience\, observe the observations of the 'real' people depicted in the
obviously staged situations. What we see and what they 'see' is involved
in shifting modes of belief. There seem to be (though there is no narrat
ive) a Hero and Heroine. However\, from scene to scene they are different
people costumed identically or altered electronically. The sound - elect
ronic like the picture - is also a continuous metamorphosis and as the fi
lm's 'nervous system'\, is as important to the film as the picture. Or: t
he sound and the picture are two hemispheres joined by the artist. *CORPU
S CALLOSUM is resolutely 'artificial'\, it not only wants to convince\, b
ut also to be a perceived pictorial and musical phenomenon.\n\n\n"Part ol
d-fashioned Renaissance man\, part hardcore avant-gardist\, the Canadian
painter-photographer-filmmaker-musician Michael Snow gives full vent to h
is genius in this exhilarating perceptual vaudeville\, titled for the 'ce
ntral region' of tissue that acts as a conduit between the brain's two he
mispheres.... *CORPUS CALLOSUM is a bonanza of wacky sight gags\, outland
ish color schemes\, and corny visual puns that can be appreciated equally
as an abstract Frank Tashlin comedy and as a playful recapitulation of t
he artist's career. From the opening reverse zoom through the series of 3
60-degree pans to the final line animation created by Snow in 1956\, this
  92-minute feature is a self-curated retrospective\, but with a twist." -

DESCRIPTION:THE STRAIGHT STORY\n(David Lynch\, 1999\, 112 min\, USA\, Engl
 ish\, 35mm)\n\nSpecial 35mm Screening!\n\nA perfectly titled movie\, THE
STRAIGHT STORY is as forthright and methodical as its eponymous - and eld
erly - protagonist\, Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth)\, who journeys a
cross the Midwest on a John Deere lawn tractor to visit his estranged bro
ther (Harry Dean Stanton). From this true story\, Lynch crafts a splendid
\, deeply felt work as overflowing with human eccentricity as any of the
director's other masterpieces\, yet fueled by a singular gentility. The c
asting of craggy character actor Farnsworth as Alvin Straight provided Da
vid Lynch with his most soulful lead performance since John Hurt in THE E
LEPHANT MAN\, while the mostly exterior shooting locations unleashed a ma
gic-hour lyricism close to that of Terrence Malick. As designed by Jack F
isk and lensed by the great Freddie Francis\, this may be Lynch's most pu
rely beautiful movie\, and proof\, after a series of wildly polarizing fe
 atures\, that he could craft a crowd-pleaser - and\, like his protagonist
's trip\, do so on solely his own terms. \n\n"Switching gears radically\,
bravely defying conventional wisdom about what it takes to excite movieg
oers\, Lynch presents the flip side of BLUE VELVET and turns it into a su
premely improbable triumph." - Janet Maslin\, The New York Times\n\n"One
of the tenderest\, most plangent spiritual odysseys ever filmed." - Howar
 d Hampton\, Artforum

DESCRIPTION:HARD TRUTHS\n(Mike Leigh\, 2024\, 97 min\, UK\, English\, DCP)
 \n\nLegendary filmmaker Mike Leigh returns with a fierce\, compassionate\
, and often darkly humorous study of family and the thorny ties that bind
us. Reunited with Leigh for the first time since multiple Oscar-nominate
d Secrets and Lies\, the astonishing Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy\,
a woman wracked by fear\, tormented by afflictions\, and prone to raging
tirades against her husband\, son\, and anyone who looks her way. Meanwh
ile\, her easygoing younger sister\, played by Michele Austin (Another Ye
ar)\, is a single mother with a life as different from Pansy's as their c
lashing temperaments - brimming with communal warmth from her salon clien
ts and daughters alike. This expansive film from a master dramatist takes
us into the intensities of kinship\, duty\, and the most enduring of hum
an mysteries: that even through lifetimes of hurt and hardship\, we still
find ways to love those we call family.\n\n-- Marianne Jean-Baptiste Bes
t Actress winner at NYFCC (New York Film Critics Circle)\, Los Angeles Fi
lm Critics Association (LAFCA) and National Society of Film Critics (NSFC
)\, becoming the first woman of color to do so.\n\n"For the past half cen
tury\, [Mike Leigh] has been making movies that\, when they're not making
you gasp with laughter\, take the wind out of you as quickly as a gut pu
nch." - Manohla Dargis\, The New York Times\n\n"'I love you\,' Chantelle
 tells her. 'I don't understand you\, but I love you.' It's a message that
Leigh has been trying to convey to his characters for more than 40 years
\, and one that has seldom been so natural to accept for ourselves." - Da
 vid Ehrlich\, IndieWire

DESCRIPTION:FACES OF SEOUL\n(Gina Kim\, 2009\, 93 min\, South Korea and US
 A\, Korean and English w/English subtitles\, Digital)\n\n-- Virtual Q&A t
o follow with director Gina Kim\n\nFACES OF SEOUL is filmmaker Gina Kim's
unique documentary\, at once a portrait of an Asian capital and a film e
ssay of a transforming Seoul. The film is taken from the intimate perspec
tive of both an ex local and expatriate\, whose knowledge of the city is
neither contemporary nor irrelevant.\n\nFACES OF SEOUL loops its audience
s through the ever-changing modern metropolis\, from the Seodaemun Prison
to the blooming cherry blossoms in a verdant park\, from a neighborhood
occupied with American soldiers to a parade of Buddhists marching through
the streets. In each of these spaces\, Gina Kim explores the city she so
fondly remembers\, reconciling the reality of her memories with that whi
ch moves right in front of her. By doing so\, FACES OF SEOUL reveals Kore
a's capital as a dynamic place where these opposing concepts--language vs
. image\, tradition vs. modern\, native knowledge vs. exotic encounters-o
verlap and move against one another\, none yielding to a single dominant
perspective.\n\n"A beautiful and intimate Tour of Seoul. Compelling Visua
 l essay of the director's memories and emotions." - Sun-jung Kim\, Curato
r\, Co-Artistic Director Gwangju Biennale 2012\n\n"FACES OF SEOUL unearth
s multiple layers of the city's archeology\, exposing the turbulent hist
ory of modern Korea through the intimate eye of the filmmaker. " - Carter
Eckert\, Professor\, Dept of East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, Ha
rvard University\n\nLos Angeles-based Gina Kim is a South Korean filmmake
r whose award-winning films reimagine cinematic storytelling across diffe
rent genres and platforms\, developing a unique transnational perspective
centered on female protagonists.\n\n==\nRelated Event on Friday\, April
11 at 3:00pm EDT:\n\nOnline artist talk with Gina Kim\, entitled "Embodie

DESCRIPTION:-- Join us for a rare screening of two films by Jean-Claude Ro
usseau presented by Screen/Society and the Duke Experimental Film Society
\n\n"Ever since the late eighties French filmmaker Jean-Claude Rousseau h
as been a name commonly attached to the most adventurous...type of filmma
king. Far from the American\, well-established niches of experimental fil
m\, he has been working sparsely in Europe (and Japan) for over thirty ye
ars becoming a sort of mythological\, solitary figure for this continent'
 s avant-garde." - Mubi Notebook\n\n"Jeune femme à sa fenêtre en lisant un
 e letter"\n(1983\, 45 min\, France\, Super 8mm to DCP) \n\n"Through the w
 indow\, we cannot distinguish the scene: a street\, a canal\, a view of D
elft\, perhaps a port. We are on the inside\, with the light pouring in.
The maps on the wall are bigger than the paintings\, yet we do not know w
here we are. The woman stands at the window reading a letter. She loses t
rack of location as she reads. She could be anywhere\, at any random poin
t on the map. Outside. Through the window\, we cannot distinguish the sce
 ne: a street\, a canal\, a view of Delft\, perhaps a port. We are on the
inside..." - Jean-Claude Rousseau\n\n"[F]rom my first film ["Jeune femme
à sa fenêtre en lisant une letter"]\, what I looked for was unity\, insid
e of the [Super 8] cartridge. As if every cartridge was a brick in the co
mposition\, in the construction of a film. This can only be done on Super
  8. ... I like to use the word brick. To make a sort of building with the
bricks of Super 8 cartridges." - Jean-Claude Rousseau\n\n"Keep in Touch"
 \n(1987\, 25 min\, France\, 16mm)\n\nSitting at a table\, the filmmaker i
s in a room in New York. Various messages on an answering machine are hea
rd: whispers punctuated by a "love\, love"\, a voice seeking an appointme
nt. The film tells the vacancy\, the time between the meeting and the wai
 t.

DESCRIPTION:HATARI!\n(Howard Hawks\, 1962\, 157 min\, USA\, English\, 35mm
 )\n\nRare IB-Technicolor 35mm print!\n\n"If there's one film that crystal
lizes what critics generally mean when they use the term "Hawksian\," it'
 s HATARI!\, the director's ambling\, good-natured\, character-driven late
film about a motley crew of safari wranglers led by Sean Mercer (John Wa
yne) who catch and sell exotic wild animals in the African desert. The fi
lm focuses on the bonds formed within a group of men-and in this case\, t
wo women-doing daunting physical work in a remote region\, and\, in perha
ps the most Hawksian trait of all\, it jettisons plot to fixate almost en
tirely on the schmoozing and leisure time. Yet in the absence of high sta
kes\, HATARI!relishes in gags and good humor\, much of it generated by th
e arrival of a beautiful Italian photographer (Elsa Martinelli) who force
s Sean to come to terms with his past struggles with women. Long and digr
essive\, the film features some of Hawks' most enjoyable scene constructi
on and character building." - Harvard Film Archive\n\n"All in all\, one o
f those rare films that genuinely constitutes a 'late masterpiece'." - Ti
me Out\n\n"This late masterpiece ... transcends every literary value in t
he book to become a brilliantly entertaining and insightful work of pure
cinema." - Dave Kehr\, Chicago Reader
