DESCRIPTION:Premiere performances of works by Duke graduate composers Josu
é Collado-Fregoso and Auburn Lee\, as well as Professor Scott Lindroth's
SCHLEY ROAD for saxophone and string quartet featuring saxophonist Susan
Fancher. Reception to follow. \n\nFree admission.\n\nThe Ciompi Quartet's
"Portfolio Project" began in the summer of 2020\, when the Quartet commi
ssioned a unique project from four composers in Duke Music's graduate pro
gram. The parameters of the commission were unorthodox: to find a solutio
n to the compositional and performing challenges created by the Covid-19
pandemic by creating short works that could be practiced and recorded rem
otely by each member of the quartet.\n\nThe success of this initial proje
ct led the Quartet to commission three more works in 2021 and two in the
summers of 2022 and 2023 from Duke graduate composers. It is these new wo
rks from last summer that will be heard on this program.\n\nSince its fou
nding in 1965 by the renowned Italian violinist Giorgio Ciompi\, the Ciom
pi Quartet of Duke University has delighted audiences and impressed criti
cs around the world. All its members are professors at Duke\, where they
teach instrumental lessons\, coordinate and coach chamber music\, and per
form across campus in concert halls\, libraries\, dormitories\, and class
rooms. In a career that spans five continents and includes many hundreds
of concerts\, the Ciompi Quartet has developed a reputation for performan
ces of real intelligence and musical sophistication\, with a warm\, unifi
ed sound that allows each player's individual voice to emerge.

DESCRIPTION:Creative Writing\n"Using Poetry to Understand the Spirituality
of Whistling" \nTaught by Takudzwa Chikepe\n\nIn this workshop\, "Using
Poetry to Understand the Spirituality of Whistling"\, participants will e
mbark on a unique journey to interpret the meaning of whistling and explo
re various types of whistles. The advantages of whistling include being e
asily understood by animals\, especially birds\, dogs\, and sheep\, physi
cal relaxation\, creating coded communication\, enhancing focus and conce
ntration\, social connection\, cognitive coordination for brain health\,
 conveying emotions\, mood enhancement\, improved breathing\, and stress r
eduction. Disadvantages may include varying social perceptions\, inapprop
riate timing\, cultural sensitivity\, noise disturbance\, and misinterpre
tation.\n\nPoetry is revealed\, as we navigate the space between the adva
ntages and disadvantages of whistles and whistling\; spirituality emerges
as we contemplate on matters dearest to our hearts while crafting whistl
ing-inspired poetry. Why were people created with the ability to whistle?
One might say\, "The ability to whistle is often associated with joy\, p
layfulness\, and a carefree spirit. It could be considered a simple pleas
ure that adds to the overall experience of life\, reflecting the Creator'
s intention for humans to find joy in their existence".\n\nParticipants w
ill have the opportunity to whistle\, listen to selected music inspired b
y whistling\, craft short poems from these songs\; write poetry stemming
from the whole experience\, introspect and meditate\, and contemplate the
various spiritual dimensions this session may evoke. It is like finding
a needle in the sand. This marks the second workshop aiming to inspire pa
rticipants to discover poetry in music\, musical elements\, and all aspec
ts of life-activating our spiritual\, poetic\, and creative selves beyond
the borders and boundaries of our fears. Join us\, also in the spirit an
 d wisdom of Henry David Thoreau\, who said\, "When I hear music\, I fear
no danger. I am invulnerable. I see no foe. I am related to the earliest
times and to the latest."\n*This will be a community workshop open to all
 . Non-Duke users\, please email anna.wallace@duke.edu to reserve a place
 in the class.

r new writers and constraints for experienced writers. This workshop is a
ppropriate for any level of writer\, whether you're looking to try out fi

we will spend a good amount of time talking about elementary writing and
submitting principles on either end of our writing time. (Please bring a
notebook or computer to write on! We will provide some notebooks and wri
 ting utensils.)

DESCRIPTION:Whether you're new to a practice of quietude or a long-time pr
actitioner\, this workshop will allow us to access simple\, effective tec
hniques that expose the truth of our experiences. A pervasive amount of t
urbulence that goes unidentified can be the barrier between awareness and
unawareness of our feelings\, thoughts\, and overall mental health. Here
we will sit and chat and practice the ancient ways of settling our minds
in their natural state of gentle\, peaceful luminosity.

DESCRIPTION:The rise of China and its great power competition with the U.S
. will be one of the defining issues of our generation. But to understand
modern China\, one must understand the people who live there and how the
Chinese state is trying to control them along lines of identity and free
expression.\n\nIn vivid\, cinematic detail\, "Let Only Red Flowers Bloom
" tells the stories of nearly two dozen people who are pushing back. They
include a Uyghur family\, separated as China detains hundreds of thousan
ds of their fellow Uyghurs in camps\; human rights lawyers fighting to de
fend civil liberties in the face of mammoth odds\; a teacher from Inner M
ongolia\, forced to make hard choices because of his support of his mothe
r tongue\; and a Hong Kong fugitive trying to find a new home and live in
freedom.\n\nReporting despite the personal risks\, journalist Emily Feng
reveals dramatic human stories of resistance and survival in a country t
hat is increasingly closing itself off to the world. Feng illustrates wha
t it is like to run against the grain in China and the myriad ways people
are trying to survive with dignity.\n\nDuring this event\, Emily Feng wi
ll join Professor Eileen Chow (AMES\, APSI) in conversation about her boo
k as well as her career as an acclaimed journalist and writer.\n\nProfess
or Ralph Litzinger (Cultural Anthropology) will introduce the speaker and
moderate the post-conversation Q&A.\n\n**Audience members are invited to
join Emily for a public book signing of "Let Only Red Flowers Bloom" fol
lowing the talk. Books will be available on-site for purchase from the Du
ke Gothic Bookshop. The book is scheduled to be released on March 18\, 20
 25.**\n\n \nAbout the speaker:\n\nEmily Feng is an award-winning internat
ional correspondent for NPR. She is a regular contributor to NPR podcasts
and member stations and is a frequent guest on U.S. and BBC radio and te
levision programs.\n\nPreviously based in Beijing and Taipei for NPR\, Fe
ng now lives in Washington\, D.C. She is an alumna of Duke University (T
'15)\, where she was a double major in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies and
  Public Policy (Sanford).

DESCRIPTION:The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 profoundly changed
the demographics of the United States and laid the basis for the immigra
tion system we have today. How has this act shaped Asian America? What
are its legacies for Latine and African American communities? How has it
impacted the U.S. South\, especially the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area
? "Six Decades Later" is a symposium that explores the complicated legac
