DESCRIPTION:Whether you're new to a practice of quietude or a long-time pr
actitioner\, this workshop will allow us to access simple\, effective tec
hniques that expose the truth of our experiences. A pervasive amount of t
urbulence that goes unidentified can be the barrier between awareness and
unawareness of our feelings\, thoughts\, and overall mental health. Here
we will sit and chat and practice the ancient ways of settling our minds
in their natural state of gentle\, peaceful luminosity.

DESCRIPTION:The rise of China and its great power competition with the U.S
. will be one of the defining issues of our generation. But to understand
modern China\, one must understand the people who live there and how the
Chinese state is trying to control them along lines of identity and free
expression.\n\nIn vivid\, cinematic detail\, "Let Only Red Flowers Bloom
" tells the stories of nearly two dozen people who are pushing back. They
include a Uyghur family\, separated as China detains hundreds of thousan
ds of their fellow Uyghurs in camps\; human rights lawyers fighting to de
fend civil liberties in the face of mammoth odds\; a teacher from Inner M
ongolia\, forced to make hard choices because of his support of his mothe
r tongue\; and a Hong Kong fugitive trying to find a new home and live in
freedom.\n\nReporting despite the personal risks\, journalist Emily Feng
reveals dramatic human stories of resistance and survival in a country t
hat is increasingly closing itself off to the world. Feng illustrates wha
t it is like to run against the grain in China and the myriad ways people
are trying to survive with dignity.\n\nDuring this event\, Emily Feng wi
ll join Professor Eileen Chow (AMES\, APSI) in conversation about her boo
k as well as her career as an acclaimed journalist and writer.\n\nProfess
or Ralph Litzinger (Cultural Anthropology) will introduce the speaker and
moderate the post-conversation Q&A.\n\n**Audience members are invited to
join Emily for a public book signing of "Let Only Red Flowers Bloom" fol
lowing the talk. Books will be available on-site for purchase from the Du
ke Gothic Bookshop. The book is scheduled to be released on March 18\, 20
 25.**\n\n \nAbout the speaker:\n\nEmily Feng is an award-winning internat
ional correspondent for NPR. She is a regular contributor to NPR podcasts
and member stations and is a frequent guest on U.S. and BBC radio and te
levision programs.\n\nPreviously based in Beijing and Taipei for NPR\, Fe
ng now lives in Washington\, D.C. She is an alumna of Duke University (T
'15)\, where she was a double major in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies and
  Public Policy (Sanford).

DESCRIPTION:In this provocative interactive performance\, Avital Meshi inv
ites audience members into conversation: "would you like to speak with me
\, or with GPT-ME?"\n\nAfter months of wearing a GPT device\, Meshi has m
ade herself into a hybrid AI-human entity. When speaking as the GPT versi
on of herself\, Meshi voices conversational responses generated into her
ear in real time. "In essence\, I speak GPT. Rather than speaking what sp
ontaneously comes to my mind\, I say what GPT whispers to me. I become GP
T's body\, and my intelligence becomes artificial."\n\nThe performance is
a one-on-one encounter. Viewers join the artist for a personal conversat
ion. They decide whether they wish to speak with her "self" or with her "
GPT-aided self." During the conversation\, they can choose any topic they
wish to discuss\, and they can sit with the artist for however long they
want to converse. Other audience members are welcome to sit in and witne
ss the conversations during this durational\, drop in-drop-out event.
