DESCRIPTION:QueerXscape reflects on the present from a queer collaborative
perspective through a series of landscapes in mixed-media collage and vi
deo. The installation presents viewers with collaged landscape vistas and
video that bring together queer camp with an environmental uncanny: fami
liar terrain interspersed with remnants of contemporary glass-walled urba
 n architecture\, unruly bodies\, broken statuary\, random trinkets\, flow
ers\, and food. The exhibit is a collaboration between two queer artists
living between Durham\, New York\, and Istanbul and presents an aesthetic
response to dominant modes of economic development that at once bridge t
hese places and intensify their disparities in terms of urban and environ
 mental life.

DESCRIPTION:Here to Hear // Hear to Here is an interactive audio installat
ion that invites you to put on headphones and sing specific pitches follo
wing helpful cues. The sound of your voice triggers music to play-never t
he same\, and only if you sing on key.\n\nThis immersive work by musician
and artist Brooks Frederickson (currently a composition doctoral student
at Duke) is designed to give non-musicians the chance to actively partic
ipate in the creation of music. The in-headphone audio that plays in resp
onse to your singing includes music composed by Frederickson and sung by
the Grammy-winning new music choir The Crossing\, electronic percussion\,
and digitally altered versions of the recordings of The Crossing.\n\nCou
nter to the current trend in art and art institutions to create experienc
es that are Instagram-ready\, Here to Hear // Hear to Here is designed to
be un-sharable. This headphone-based\, ephemeral experience encourages y
ou to focus on having an experience rather than sharing it on your social
feeds.\n\nA visit to Here to Hear // Hear to Here is unique and cannot b
e repeated. Each time you interact with the installation\, the audio trig
gered by your voice is generated in a new ordering and organization. Here
to Hear // Hear to Here consists of six independent headphone and microp
hone pairs that allow each participant to have a private experience. For
anyone nearby the installation\, the pitches sung by participants create
 another layer of spontaneous music.

DESCRIPTION:Julia Gartrell\, an artist and sculptor from Durham\, has been
in residence in the Rubenstein Arts Center since November developing the
Radical Repair Workshop. This pop-up art experience-inside a vintage 196
6 Frolic camper-will encourage participants and viewers to consider their
  relationship to mending\, sentimental objects\, single-use items\, and r
adical (potentially non-functional) modes of repair.\n\nAfter months of r
epair to the trailer itself\, step into the Radical Repair Workshop durin
g its first visit to Duke's campus on the heels of its premiere at Durham
's Third Friday! Inside you will find a small gallery\, a workshop space\
, and information on both repair in general and the project in specific.\
n\nThrough future workshops and visits around the region\, the Radical Re
pair Workshop will teach concrete skills\, such as sewing and darning\, b
ut also explore abstract notions of repair.

DESCRIPTION:Radio Haïti-Inter: Three Decades of Resistance\, both an exhib
it and immersive audio experience\, coincides with the Duke Performances
premiere of Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever and the twentieth
anniversary of the assassination of station director Jean Dominique.\n\nT
he exhibit tells the story of how Radio Haïti-Inter persevered in the fac
e of government repression during dictatorship\, military rule\, and the
democratic era. Under the leadership of Jean Dominique and Miche¿le Monta
s\, Radio Haiti was a voice of social change and democracy\, speaking out
against oppression and impunity while advocating for human rights and ce
lebrating Haitian culture and heritage. Dominique was assassinated on Apr
il 3\, 2000 amid a climate of mounting violence against Haiti's free pres
s.\n\nRadio Haïti-Inter: Three Decades of Resistance includes photographs
and historical objects from the Radio Haiti Collection in the Human Righ
ts Archive of the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library. In
a setting evoking a 1980s home in Port-au-Prince\, visitors can listen to
audio clips of Radio Haiti programming\, station jingles\, and ambient s
ounds recorded in Haiti. The original soundboard from the station will be
on view along with a microphone and field recorder. Reproductions of pho
tographs\, written texts and on-air notes explain the history of Radio Ha
iti and some of the major events the station covered.

DESCRIPTION:The Duke Dance Program MFA in Dance: Embodied Interdisciplinar
y Praxis presents MFA candidate Lee Edward's thesis project. \n\n"Cyclica
l Navigations: In the In Between" conceptualizes storytelling as a practi
ce of embodied memory recollection -- one that aids in the navigation of
cyclical temporalities in the present\, or what MFA in Dance candidate Le
e Edwards has termed the "In Between." The In Between is the space betwee
n and within history and the contemporary. It is the liminal space that e
xists between an Afropessimist reality and an Afrofuturist practice. This
project considers what is possible if Black history and thus Black stori
es are treated with care through the valuing of Black bodies and voices\,
both living and deceased. It interrogates what happens when land is view
ed as a container that holds the stories of those who are and were\, and
what happens when we acknowledge what and who was while inscribing what a
nd who is into space. This interdisciplinary installation takes the audie
nce on a nonlinear journey of time through memory\, story\, movement\, an
 d location. \n\nMovement collaborators: Alyah Baker\, Jasmine Callis\, Ay
an Felix\, Ama Gora\, Juliet Irving\, Aigner Picou \n\nArtist's reception
 : February 5\, 5:00-9:00pm with artist talk at 5:30pm and 7:30pm.\n\nGall
ery hours: M-F 10am-6pm | Weekends: 10am-5pm\n\nDuke COVID protocols are
in effect. Masks & social distancing is required.
