DESCRIPTION:Catharine A. MacKinnon is the Elizabeth A. Long Professor of L
aw\, University of Michigan and The James Barr Ames Visiting Professor of
Law\, Harvard Law School.\n\nProfessor MacKinnon pioneered the legal cla
im for sexual harassment as a form of sex discrimination. With Andrea Dwo
rkin\, she created the equality approach to pornography and racist hate s
peech\, which were largely accepted by the Supreme Court of Canada. With
Bosnian and Croatian survivors of the Serbian-led genocide\, she conceive
d rape as an act of genocide and with co-counsel established it in law an
d secured a damage award at trial for survivors. She drafted language for
the Palermo Protocol on international trafficking and anti-trafficking l
egislation that was passed by Congress in the United States. She and Andr
ea Dworkin conceived\, and she proposed\, the Nordic/Equality Model for p
rostitution\, decriminalizing prostituted people and penalizing their buy
ers and sellers. Passed in Sweden in 1999\, this approach has since becom
 e law in Norway\, Iceland\, Republic of Ireland\, Northern Ireland\, Cana
da\, France\, and Israel. From 2008-2012\, Professor MacKinnon was the Sp
ecial Gender Advisor to the first Prosecutor of the International Crimina
l Court (ICC)\, where she implemented her concept "gender crime" under th
e Rome Statute. In 2022\, she was selected for the Henry Phillips Prize i
n Jurisprudence\, only awarded 29 times since 1895. She has written many
articles and over a dozen books\, translated into many languages.

DESCRIPTION:AMENDMENT\n\nA social choreography by Michael Kliën\n\nExperie
nce an immersive work - a social choreography - by choreographer and prof
essor Michael Kliën. In times of the systemic destruction of our environm
ent\, Amendment offers a container to reform our relationship with the un
known\, the foreign\, the animal. The work provides citizens with extraor
dinary experiences to temporarily transcend the human/non-human divide an
 d dive into a relationship of reciprocal belonging.\n\n6-7:30 p.m.\nTues\
 , March 28\, 2023\nvon der Heyden Studio Theater\nRubenstein Arts Center\
, Duke University\n\nFree\; prior registration required. Email labsc@duke
.edu for more information and to confirm participation. Limited places. D
inner is catered after the event (optional).\n\nAbout AMENDMENT\n\nAMENDM
ENT\, a social choreography that grew out of Kliën's seminal work Parliam
ent in response to the urgency of the situation\, works on both the now a
nd the next. It can acutely affect those who partake and the/their web of
relations\, the ecology to which they belong. At the same time\, it deve
lops the imagination for what comes after the catastrophe. How to rebuild
? What do you rebuild? Going forward\, AMENDMENT wants to mend\, to provi
de a viable lifeboat into the next.\n\nChoreographic Concept: Michael Kli
 ën\nOriginal Sound: Volkmar Klien\nProject Management: Courtney Crumpler\
n\nAmendment has been developed in interdisciplinary dialogues with Dance
462 Performance: Amendment (Duke University) and R.I.C.E. on Hydra (Gree
ce). The project is part of the Bass Connections project '"Performing Emb
odied Communities: New Pathways for Cultural Institutions" and is present
ed by the Duke Dance Program and the Laboratory for Social Choreography a
t the Kenan Institute for Ethics.

DESCRIPTION:FEATURING ADIA VICTORIA\, RISSI PALMER\, SHANA TUCKER\, SHIRLE
TTE AMMONS AND TIFT MERRITT\n\nThe Rosetta Circle is a new project that b
uilds on the work of pioneering feminist jazz historian Rosetta Reitz\, w
ho created a record label in the 1980s dedicated to the foremothers of ea
rly jazz and blues. Envisioned by Raleigh-based folk luminary Tift Merrit
t\, The Rosetta Circle seeks to continue the spirit of Rosetta's work and
honor the unsung foremothers of jazz.\n\nFor the Circle's inaugural even
t\, Merritt has assembled a starry collective of five leading female voic
es in American music - Adia Victoria\, Rissi Palmer\, Shirlette Ammons\,
Shana Tucker and Merritt herself - who will establish the structure and t
he practice of The Rosetta Circle during a week-long residency at the Rub
enstein Arts Center. Staged in the Von der Heyden Studio Theater with the
creative support of theatre director JaMeeka Holloway\, this performance
pilot will provide an intimate glimpse into an ambitious project in its
early stages.\n\nThe Rosetta Circle aims to establish an ongoing social j
ustice-minded performance collective rooted in the work of Rietz and the
women of Rosetta Records - many recordings of which are stored in the Duk
e University Libraries' archives. "The Rosetta Circle is a creative respo
nse to Rosetta Reitz' musical archive of care - a performance collective
of care\," explains Merritt\, "The structure and the practice of the circ
le is designed to speak back to the music business's harmful practices li
ke racism\, sexism\, unfair wages and leaving women out of the story. Our
work pursues music's ability to amplify public history and make change."

DESCRIPTION:At their ADF debut\, Kyle Marshall Choreography is presenting
ADF-commissioned Onyx and Alice. Onyx digs into the origins of rock and r
oll revealing the Black and Brown people whose sounds\, performances\, an
d personalities created this revolutionary genre. Through the setting of
improvisational scores\, character embodiment\, and flowing phrase work\,
Onyx reflects on the fame\, influence\, appropriation\, and erasure that
riddles the legacy of so many Black and Brown artists. Through this embo
diment of history\, Onyx serves to recognize and celebrate these groundbr

tural experience. Performed by Bree Breeden\, Alice depicts a spiritual j
ourney to love and self-acceptance guided by the transcendent music of Al
ice Coltrane. This solo is dedicated to all who are on the verge of trans
formation. It is in darkness that we see the light. The show will be foll

DESCRIPTION:Resident Island Dance Theatre will make its U.S. and ADF debut
with Ice Age\, an emotionally thrilling\, physically integrated quartet
co-choreographed by RIDT's Artistic Director Chung-An Chang and French da
nce maker Maylis Arrabit. The 55-minute piece is performed by two dancers
in wheelchairs and two standing dancers. As the world locked down during
the COVID-19 pandemic\, the work took shape-to explore the different way
s that people navigate and connect in their own cultural environments. It
evokes the coexistence between parallel realities\, separated by space-t
ime and at the same time\, united by it. Ice Age challenges external forc
es and shows us the potential of a physically\, mentally\, and emotionall
y integrated world. "All the things that make up daily life and relations
hips are changing. That's the main concept\," says Chang. Ice Age is "a c

DESCRIPTION:"Parliament is a psychedelic thunderbolt. It draws everyone ou
t of their day-to-day functional perception and plunges them into a lived
world of communal wealth\, mystery\, beauty and potential."\n\nParliamen
t is a pioneering work of situational choreography and exploration of eco
logical aesthetics. The work offers participants a critically needed with
drawal from normal modes of social action and provides instead an innovat
ive site for 21st-century experimentalist cooperation. Embedded in the im
mediacy of Kliën's choreographic framework\, citizens working in silence
come together to bear witness to and hold council amidst the elemental ph
enomena and fundamental concerns of collectively lived experience. Pointi
ng towards unseen and unexperienced modes of social organization\, Parlia
ment traverses\, probes and navigates the paradigms that animate our pres
ent-day political relations.\n\nThe series of Parliament is presented by
the Laboratory for Social Choreography (LSC). LSC focuses on the equitabl
e transformation of social structures and the articulation of new modes o
f governance through aesthetics. It is part of the Kenan Institute of Eth
ics\, and supported by the Franklin Humanities Institute\, Duke Arts\, an
d Duke Dance.\n\nThis is an open invitation to faculty\, staff\, students
and the broader community to join a powerful experience created by chore
ographer and Duke Professor Michael Kliën. Bring friends. Food will be ca
tered at 9PM.\n\nParliament is a closed participatory event. It is free o
f charge\, but registration is required. Please confirm your participatio
n by emailing labsc@duke.edu as soon as possible.

DESCRIPTION:How do we deliberate before and beyond language? How do we cre
ate relations without words? How are our bodies determined by the spaces
we are in?\n\nThe Art of Assembly is a nomadic series of talks and conver
sations exploring the potential of assembly in activism\, art\, and polit
ics. This 25th edition of The Art of Assembly takes place in the context
of Michael Kliën's "Parliament\," a social choreography in which citizen-
performers work in silence to hold council amidst the elemental phenomena
and fundamental concerns of collectively-lived experience.\n\nThis event
will also be livestreamed on The Art of Assembly website (art-of-assembl
y.net). It is coordinated by Kate Alexandrite and presented by the Labora
tory for Social Choreography at the Kenan Institute for Ethics.\n\nHost:\
 n\nFlorian Malzacher is a curator\, writer\, and dramaturg. His current p
rojects include Training for the Future (with Jonas Staal). He was artist
ic director of Impulse Theater Festival in Cologne\, Dusseldorf\, and Mul
heim/Ruhr (2013-2017)\, and co-curator of the multidisciplinary arts fest
ival steirischer herbst in Graz/Austria (2006-2012). Among his numerous p
ublications are "Truth is Concrete: A Handbook for Artistic Strategies in
Real Politics" (2014\, with steirischer herbst)\; "Not Just a Mirror: Lo
oking for the Political Theatre of Today" (2015)\; "Empty Stages\, Crowde
d Flats: Performativity as Curatorial Strategy" (2017\, with Joanna Warsz
a). His book "The Art of Assembly: Political Theatre Today" was published
in English in 2023. His books and essays have been translated into fifte
en languages.\n\nGuests:\n\nPolitical philosopher and literature theorist
Michael Hardt\, who together with Antonio Negri coined the term "multitu
de" to describe a "multiplicity of singularities acting together": a netw
ork that is neither homogeneous nor self-identical.\n\nVisual artist Pedr
o Lasch\, Director of the Social Practice Lab at the Franklin Humanities
Institute at Duke University\, who works with choreographies of festive g
atherings\, multi-platform social communication\, and other artworks crea
ted through interaction.\n\nLiterature scholar Corina Stan\, who shows th
at relations are not only constructed by proximity\, but also by interper
sonal distances that have shaped ethical thinking throughout modernity.

 - The Dance Centre - Vancouver\n\nInspired by the Black Lives Matter move

DESCRIPTION:"Poppaea" (run time ca. 110') is a 21st-century inquiry into t
he brilliant\, dynamic woman who became Nero's empress. The film takes a
hard look at cruelty\, desire\, humanity\, and love in the context of the
machinations of power endemic to Nero's reign. "Poppaea" conjures a dark
world in which violence-in particular\, violence against women-is rampan
t\, and the value of human life has been demeaned beyond measure. And yet
Poppaea's journey might be described as a complex movement towards empat
hy.. Music by Michael Hersch\, libretto by Stephanie Fleischmann. \n\n"Po
 ppaea" premiered September 10 and 12\, 2021 - ZeitRäume Basel - Biennial
for New Music and Architecture and November 5-7\, 2021 - Wien Modern Fest
 ival\, Vienna\, Austria. \n\nFree admission. \n\nPost-screening discussio
n with composer Michael Hersch\, soprano Ah Young Hong\, and Duke profess
ors Lauren Ginsberg (Classical Studies)\, Roseen Giles (Music) and John S
upko (Music). \n\nThis screening is presented by the Departments of Music
and Classical Studies\, the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute\, an
 d Duke Arts.

DESCRIPTION:In this screened multi-media performance the artist Shah Abdul
lah Alamee merges calligraphy\, poetry\, painting\, raag (in classical In
dian music\, raag describes a melody that creates a particular mood) and
videography. The Lahore-based artist will write with ink using the siya m
ashq technique\, a writing style in Persian calligraphy\, onto gold-leafe
d canvas. Alamee will engage with two poems: a ghazal from Molana Balkhi'
s aka Rumi's Divan-e Shams in Farsi and Faiz Ahmed Faiz's poem "The Dawn
of Freedom" in Urdu. There will be electronic tanpura composed in raag bh
 airav - a foundational raag that works with a slow\, meditative tempo - a
s the artist puts the poets into a conversation through his writing\, voi
ce and movement.\n\nThe event reflects on aesthetics as a means of world-
making and querying of borders. It explores the potential of the arts to
translate migrant lived experiences and multi-temporality. The use of vid
eography in this instance serves as an aesthetic response to the physical
absence of Shah Abdullah Alamee: he is an artist in his own right\, with
his art performance as the subject of the screening\, while his embodied
experience\, memory and labor generate an archive of affective lives\, c
amaraderie and care as well as of of racializing practices of nation-stat
es. Alamee's performance invites us to disentangle how we affectively exp
erience belonging to envision the possibilities of language that refuses
to limit belonging to narratives of nationalism.\n\nThe calligraphy perfo
rmance will be screened in the von der Heyden Studio Theater of the Ruben
stein Arts Center at Duke University and followed by a panel discussion w
ith Jamal J. Elias (University of Pennsylvania) and Ahmad Qais Munhazim (
Thomas Jefferson University\, East Falls) and moderated by Sumathi Ramasw
amy (Duke University). \n\nConvenor: Paniz Musawi Natanzi (Postdoctoral A
ssociate\, DUMESC)\n\nThere will be a reception catered by Zweli's in the
Ruby Lounge at 6:00 PM.\n\nFor event parking: The Campus Drive lot\, loc
ated at the corner of Campus Drive and Anderson Street\, is directly acro
ss the street from the Rubenstein Arts Center. It will be open and free o
 f charge for the event.
