DESCRIPTION:Dance MFA candidate Sadé Jones presents MELANATED CHRYSALIS. T
he outward facing project includes an immersive dance performance centeri
ng the body as an archive of ancestral memory\, demonstrating how movemen
t encodes and transmits diasporic knowledge. The audience is invited into
a chrysalis - a point of liminality - where the African diaspora is map
ped\, webbed and woven within a body. With infusions of music\, prose and
visuals\, the performance employs Sadé's developing body excavation and
movement signature techniques. A talkback session will conclude the eveni
ng. Intimate by Invitation. Limited Seating. \n \nAnchored in Black Femin
ist practices of care\, this performance is an expression of the closed p
rocess of The Womb Cypher and Sadé's archiving which ran from Spring of 2
023 and will continue beyond the thesis. Elements of its process will be
offered to all in three arts wellness workshops preceding on Feb. 8\, 11\
, and 13. Three days following the performance\, those who participated i
n the workshops or the immersion theatre are welcome to participate in a
drumming in reverence to the ancestors who informed her thesis. \n\nThis
event is in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of MFA in
Dance: Embodied Interdisciplinary Praxis in the Graduate School of Duke
 University.

DESCRIPTION:The streamers are hung\, the punch has been spiked\, and the c
ake is just begging to be eaten! Now all Bill has to do is wait for his g
uests to arrive.\n\nBill's 44th is an original comedic puppet show for gr
own-ups created by puppeteers Dorothy James & Andy Manjuck around one ver
y worried leading man - Bill. Many styles of puppetry\, raucous balloons\
, and a cheeky piece of crudité all collide to examine the pitfalls of im
patience\, the wonder of loneliness\, and the universal passage of time.\
n\nBill's 44th is part Mr. Bean\, part Waiting for Godot\, a dram of surr
ealism\, a helping of slapstick and a twist of humor.\n\nPlease Note: Rec
 ommended for Ages 12+

DESCRIPTION:ADF Commissioned World Premiere\nProgram: How To Be a Visitor\
 nRunning time: 65 minutes\, no intermission\nPost-Performance Discussion
on June 21st\n\nHow To Be a Visitor is a new work by Culture Mill\, conce

cross the world: Jassem Hindi (Palestine/France)\, Frank Mugisha (Rwanda/
Uganda)\, Edgar Kanyike (Uganda)\, Sebulime Elisha Davis (Uganda)\, Cortl
and Gilliam (USA)\, and Caitlyn Swett (USA). This innovative performance
connects artists and audiences across multiple countries through simultan

DESCRIPTION:Program: Volcano\nRunning time: 225 minutes (four 45-minute pi
eces) includes one intermission\n\nVolcano comprises 4 episodes\, each of
45 minutes. There is a 5-minute pause between Episode 1 and Episode 2 an
d again between Episode 2 and Episode 3. We ask that patrons remain seate
 d. There is a full 25-minute interval between Episode 3 and Episode 4. Pl
ease leave the theater\, stretch your legs\, get a bite to eat\, and read
y yourself for the final episode!\n\nLuke Murphy's Attic Projects brings
four-time Irish Times Theatre Award winner Volcano to ADF this summer. In
  a liminal space\, a living room in disrepair\, a room without a door\, t
wo exasperated characters recreate the greatest hits of old lives: a nigh
 t at a rave\, a favorite game show\, an 80s music video\, passing the tim
e or quietly clinging to distant memories of a life out of reach. As the
narrative unfolds the deeper precarity of their circumstances comes to fo
cus leading the audience through a fever dream of questions and upended a
 ssumptions. Presented across four\, forty-five-minute episodes\, Volcano
blurs the lines of experimental theater\, contemporary dance\, and a sci-
fi thriller in live performance made for the Netflix era.\n\nADF offers a
20% discount to Duke employees and $20 tickets to Duke students. To acce
ss your discount\, just log in with your Duke Net ID at tickets.duke.edu.

DESCRIPTION:In Fragmented Shadows\, choreographer Wanjiru Kamuyu-joined by
two dancers-gives attention to invisible stories evoking the personal\,
ancestral\, and societal inaudible wounds imprinted in one's body - shapi
ng our well-being in seen and unseen ways. Supported by epigenetic and ps
ychosomatic research\, the three performers trace an inner\, abstract\, a
nd visual journey-stimulating and evocative\, mysterious and carnal-throu
gh a sensorial\, contemplative\, journey into the body as a tapestry of m
emories. In Fragmented Shadows\, dance becomes a practice of healing and
release\, transforming the body into a site of liberation. With evocativ
 e scenography\, immersive imagery\, and original music\, Fragmented Shado
ws creates a powerful visual and emotional landscape where the body seeks
to filter pain to retain only lightness.

DESCRIPTION:When the Supreme Court decided that taking race into account a
s a remedy for racial disparities is unconstitutional in the 2023 Harvard
and University of North Carolina admissions cases\, it seemed to finally
have demolished a weak but at least somewhat effective way of ending. ra
cial inequality. However\, the story continues. From Berry's work in the
Nixon administration developing goals and timetables for affirmative acti
on on hiring women and contractors of color to desegregation issues as ch
ief U.S. education official during the Carter administration and then-Pre
sident Bill Clinton's appointing her as the first chairwoman of the U.S.
Commission on Civil Rights in 1993\, she has been very much involved in t
he history of affirmative action and diversity. Access to quality higher
education became a major goal of the civil rights movement pressed on pol
iticians. When Martin Luther King was assassinated predominantly white co
lleges and universities began to admit more black students opposition to
affirmative action as reverse discrimination against whites became even m
ore heated. When the Supreme Court decided the Bakke case in 1978 officia
lly ended affirmative action replacing it with diversity DEI became the n
ew form of racial remedies story. For reasons of morality\, demography\,
and because having quality education as a goal and the economic needs of
serving clients and political constitutions and the perpetual search for
an orderly society\, labels may change but the search for civil rights re
medies for racial inequality is not over.

DESCRIPTION:weaving Dreams is an interdisciplinary performance that blends
dance\, spoken word\, visual art\, sound\, and projection to explore how
memory\, identity\, and ancestral connection surface through embodied an

rapher Johanna Kepler's life\, tracing the subtle threads of reconnecting
and self-discovery that emerge as she navigates what it means to be a tr

DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE NEW DATE OF FEB 13! Stand N Your Purpose: The Mani
festations of the Pursuit of Tension is an interdisciplinary MFA thesis p
roject by Asili Johnson that explores how artists discover\, claim\, and
embody the value of their work across individual\, communal\, and ancestr
al dimensions. Guided by the Adinkra symbol Sankofa-"to return and retrie
ve what has been forgotten"-the work invites reflection on history\, crea
tive intention\, and the tensions held in the body through movement\, sou
nd\, visual art\, and technology. Centering Black and Brown artistic cont
ributions\, the project creates space for connection\, recognition\, and
advocacy\, asserting financial support as an essential complement to cult
ural and intrinsic value. Collaborators include Pamela Key\, Kojo Ayinde
Johnson\, and Shaelyn Mullins. Viewer discretion advised for younger audi

DESCRIPTION:Two people in an art museum argue over the validity of a work
that questions the very meaning of meaning. One is accepting if detached\
, the other is troubled but engaged. Visitors come and go\, choosing thei
 r journeys\, inviting us into surreal scenes of love\, loss\, alienation\
, attraction\, and wonder.\n\nTheatre of Music (a.k.a. The Pittsburgh New
Music Ensemble) has joined forces with composer Steven Bryant to create
an immersive\, multi-disciplinary work inspired by Belgian surrealist pai
nter René Magritte. Challenging accepted notions of reality\, Magritte ha
s shown us time and again that the eye may well lie to us... But what of
our ears? Should we trust them? The Treachery of Sounds explores the poro
us and transient nature of reflection.
