two dancers-gives attention to invisible stories evoking the personal\,
ancestral\, and societal inaudible wounds imprinted in one's body - shapi
ng our well-being in seen and unseen ways. Supported by epigenetic and ps

DESCRIPTION:When the Supreme Court decided that taking race into account a
s a remedy for racial disparities is unconstitutional in the 2023 Harvard
and University of North Carolina admissions cases\, it seemed to finally
have demolished a weak but at least somewhat effective way of ending. ra
cial inequality. However\, the story continues. From Berry's work in the
Nixon administration developing goals and timetables for affirmative acti
on on hiring women and contractors of color to desegregation issues as ch
ief U.S. education official during the Carter administration and then-Pre
sident Bill Clinton's appointing her as the first chairwoman of the U.S.
Commission on Civil Rights in 1993\, she has been very much involved in t
he history of affirmative action and diversity. Access to quality higher
education became a major goal of the civil rights movement pressed on pol
iticians. When Martin Luther King was assassinated predominantly white co
lleges and universities began to admit more black students opposition to
affirmative action as reverse discrimination against whites became even m
ore heated. When the Supreme Court decided the Bakke case in 1978 officia
lly ended affirmative action replacing it with diversity DEI became the n
ew form of racial remedies story. For reasons of morality\, demography\,
and because having quality education as a goal and the economic needs of
serving clients and political constitutions and the perpetual search for
an orderly society\, labels may change but the search for civil rights re
medies for racial inequality is not over.

DESCRIPTION:weaving Dreams is an interdisciplinary performance that blends
dance\, spoken word\, visual art\, sound\, and projection to explore how
memory\, identity\, and ancestral connection surface through embodied an

DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE NEW DATE OF FEB 13! Stand N Your Purpose: The Mani
festations of the Pursuit of Tension is an interdisciplinary MFA thesis p
roject by Asili Johnson that explores how artists discover\, claim\, and
embody the value of their work across individual\, communal\, and ancestr
al dimensions. Guided by the Adinkra symbol Sankofa-"to return and retrie
ve what has been forgotten"-the work invites reflection on history\, crea
tive intention\, and the tensions held in the body through movement\, sou
nd\, visual art\, and technology. Centering Black and Brown artistic cont
ributions\, the project creates space for connection\, recognition\, and
advocacy\, asserting financial support as an essential complement to cult
ural and intrinsic value. Collaborators include Pamela Key\, Kojo Ayinde
Johnson\, and Shaelyn Mullins. Viewer discretion advised for younger audi
ences. Reception in the Ruby Lounge follows performance. \nLink to RSVP:

Discussion on Tuesday\, June 30 at 7:30 pm.\n\nCompany Website: tereoconn
ordance.org\n\nTere O'Connor presents a milestone program that pairs his
newest ensemble creation\, The Lace\, with a reconstruction of his first
dance\, Construct-A-Guy (1984). Originally made for and performed by hims
elf\, Construct-A-Guy emerged from his early artistic naiveté and establi
shed the distinctive craft methods-shifts in rhythm and energy\, spatial
fragmentation\, a collagist sensibility\, and fluid movement between mult
iple meanings and personas-that still define his work today. O'Connor wil
l join the stage between pieces to share a brief talk about his choreogra

DESCRIPTION:Aaron Pang walks with a cane\, and everyone asks "what happene
d?" He's tired of answering and so he wrote a solo show to tell it in one
go. One accident\, two stories: one you've heard a thousand times\, one
you've never heard before.\n\nFalling is an uncomfortably sexy and hilari
ously vulnerable stumble through Aaron's misadventures searching for love
\, lust\, and life after disability. Pang is a writer and comedian from O
akland\, California whose work blends sincerity and sharp humor to challe
nge familiar narratives about disabled bodies and relationships.

DESCRIPTION:Gathering unfolds in a fictional village under siege\, where a
woman struggles to reconcile fragmented memories of home through movemen
t\, ritual\, and music. In this evocative work\, hundreds of oranges spil
l across the stage-passed hand to hand\, stacked on bodies\, scattered an
d crushed underfoot-as dancers reshape the space in an ever-shifting medi
tation on loss\, survival\, and human connection. Conceived and directed
by Samar Haddad King\, Gathering blends dance\, song\, puppetry\, and pla
y with music from Max Richter's Vivaldi alongside King's original composi
tions. Both intimate and expansive\, Gathering is a work of aching beauty
that lingers long after the scent of citrus fills the air. \n\nFounded b
y King and operated out of the United States\, Palestine\, and France\, Y
aa Samar! Dance Theatre creates multidisciplinary and cross-cultural perf
ormances that unite diverse groups through creative encounters. Returning
to Duke after Last Ward in 2024\, the company has developed more than 30
original works presented across the United States and internationally.
