DESCRIPTION:"Poppaea" (run time ca. 110') is a 21st-century inquiry into t
he brilliant\, dynamic woman who became Nero's empress. The film takes a
hard look at cruelty\, desire\, humanity\, and love in the context of the
machinations of power endemic to Nero's reign. "Poppaea" conjures a dark
world in which violence-in particular\, violence against women-is rampan
t\, and the value of human life has been demeaned beyond measure. And yet
Poppaea's journey might be described as a complex movement towards empat
hy.. Music by Michael Hersch\, libretto by Stephanie Fleischmann. \n\n"Po
 ppaea" premiered September 10 and 12\, 2021 - ZeitRäume Basel - Biennial
for New Music and Architecture and November 5-7\, 2021 - Wien Modern Fest
 ival\, Vienna\, Austria. \n\nFree admission. \n\nPost-screening discussio
n with composer Michael Hersch\, soprano Ah Young Hong\, and Duke profess
ors Lauren Ginsberg (Classical Studies)\, Roseen Giles (Music) and John S
upko (Music). \n\nThis screening is presented by the Departments of Music
and Classical Studies\, the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute\, an
 d Duke Arts.

DESCRIPTION:In this screened multi-media performance the artist Shah Abdul
lah Alamee merges calligraphy\, poetry\, painting\, raag (in classical In
dian music\, raag describes a melody that creates a particular mood) and
videography. The Lahore-based artist will write with ink using the siya m
ashq technique\, a writing style in Persian calligraphy\, onto gold-leafe
d canvas. Alamee will engage with two poems: a ghazal from Molana Balkhi'
s aka Rumi's Divan-e Shams in Farsi and Faiz Ahmed Faiz's poem "The Dawn
of Freedom" in Urdu. There will be electronic tanpura composed in raag bh
 airav - a foundational raag that works with a slow\, meditative tempo - a
s the artist puts the poets into a conversation through his writing\, voi
ce and movement.\n\nThe event reflects on aesthetics as a means of world-
making and querying of borders. It explores the potential of the arts to
translate migrant lived experiences and multi-temporality. The use of vid
eography in this instance serves as an aesthetic response to the physical
absence of Shah Abdullah Alamee: he is an artist in his own right\, with
his art performance as the subject of the screening\, while his embodied
experience\, memory and labor generate an archive of affective lives\, c
amaraderie and care as well as of of racializing practices of nation-stat
es. Alamee's performance invites us to disentangle how we affectively exp
erience belonging to envision the possibilities of language that refuses
to limit belonging to narratives of nationalism.\n\nThe calligraphy perfo
rmance will be screened in the von der Heyden Studio Theater of the Ruben
stein Arts Center at Duke University and followed by a panel discussion w
ith Jamal J. Elias (University of Pennsylvania) and Ahmad Qais Munhazim (
Thomas Jefferson University\, East Falls) and moderated by Sumathi Ramasw
amy (Duke University). \n\nConvenor: Paniz Musawi Natanzi (Postdoctoral A
ssociate\, DUMESC)\n\nThere will be a reception catered by Zweli's in the
Ruby Lounge at 6:00 PM.\n\nFor event parking: The Campus Drive lot\, loc
ated at the corner of Campus Drive and Anderson Street\, is directly acro
ss the street from the Rubenstein Arts Center. It will be open and free o
 f charge for the event.

DESCRIPTION:"There is always a dark precursor that no one sees\, and then
the lightning bolt that illuminates\, and there is the world." - Gilles D
eleuze\n\nPerformed in the round\, the second part of the 11th Organ will
be an immersive social choreographic situation centered around a group o
f performers\, who temporarily envision themselves inhabiting a shared im
aginary space. The metaphysical space will be initially obscure to the sp
ectator-wholly constructed out of thoughts that resonate into the body. S
lowly and inexplicably\, the invisible vision will expand to absorb the a
udience\, inviting them into a radically different world of possibilities
. The core of the work - a matrix of shared imaginations - will produce a
mysterious and alien relational realm\, a thick wild mind\, cultivated b
y the performers over the period of a year.

DESCRIPTION:Dance MFA candidate Sadé Jones presents MELANATED CHRYSALIS. T

ng the body as an archive of ancestral memory\, demonstrating how movemen
t encodes and transmits diasporic knowledge. The audience is invited into
a chrysalis - a point of liminality - where the African diaspora is map
ped\, webbed and woven within a body. With infusions of music\, prose and
visuals\, the performance employs Sadé's developing body excavation and
movement signature techniques. A talkback session will conclude the eveni
ng. Intimate by Invitation. Limited Seating. \n \nAnchored in Black Femin
ist practices of care\, this performance is an expression of the closed p

023 and will continue beyond the thesis. Elements of its process will be
offered to all in three arts wellness workshops preceding on Feb. 8\, 11\
, and 13. Three days following the performance\, those who participated i

drumming in reverence to the ancestors who informed her thesis. \n\nThis

DESCRIPTION:ADF Commissioned World Premiere\nProgram: How To Be a Visitor\
 nRunning time: 65 minutes\, no intermission\nPost-Performance Discussion
on June 21st\n\nHow To Be a Visitor is a new work by Culture Mill\, conce

cross the world: Jassem Hindi (Palestine/France)\, Frank Mugisha (Rwanda/
Uganda)\, Edgar Kanyike (Uganda)\, Sebulime Elisha Davis (Uganda)\, Cortl
and Gilliam (USA)\, and Caitlyn Swett (USA). This innovative performance
connects artists and audiences across multiple countries through simultan
