DESCRIPTION:"When I was 13\, I made a ballpoint pen drawing on notebook pa
per of my Dad's smiling face. I cut the drawing to the edge of the shape
of his head to allow it to be easily transferred to any background that
he chose. This was a gift for his 31st birthday. He still has the drawing
. (I only cringed a little when I saw it again.) I'm named after my fathe
 r. He was named after his mother's brother\, William Paul Mickens\, whos
e life was taken one month before my father was born. William Paul Neal
is a meticulous and uber-organized handyman\, witty and charming. He was
raised mostly by his grandmother along with four sisters and two brother
 s. They grew up one block east of my mother's family in Roseland\, on the
Southside of Chicago. \n\nAn overdue realization of the impeccable resi
lience of my mother and father sparked my obsession with unraveling the t
angled layers of our family histories. Many stories have been brought to
life for me by revisiting and being introduced to images of people that
I have limited knowledge of. Given the marvelous surface details and the
rich interior narratives they hold\, a high definition image [drawing\, p
ainting\, or photograph] of a loved one is a priceless treasure to me. D
epending on the perspective\, the stories in these pictures may transform
over time\, but however they change\, they typically help us remember so
mething valuable about the person(s) depicted.\n\nSince the summer of 202
 3\, I have been searching for\, requesting\, and collecting photographs o
f many of my daughter Indigo's direct ancestors. The stories these photo
s tell range from facts corroborated by government records to aspirationa
l fantasies only known to select members of the family. This project is
intended to be a platform for exploring the visible as well as the unseen
aspects of genetic inheritance. Aspiring to the nature of a family at i
ts best\, this has truly been a collaborative process. I have invited cr
eatives who share common ancestors with Indigo to contribute to this livi
ng archive. Thank you to the generous kinfolk who continue to help us all
find our way."\n\n-William Paul Thomas\n\n###\n\nThe Rubenstein Arts Cen
ter is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday thr
 ough Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:A Maritime Haunting is a multi-channel\, immersive sound insta
llation that uses the voice to convey the ambiguous loss resulting from b
order policies in the Mediterranean Sea. Through speech and song\, the pi
ece incorporates sonic elements of the sea such as waves\, tides\, and su
 rges\, depicting the sea as a passageway\, a grave\, and\, in the context
of migration\, a space of exception.\n\nThe performers vocally explore t
he experience of ambiguous loss and state of denial related to lives lost
during migration\, assuming the role of an ancient Greek chorus to creat
e a collective voice of mourning. They will express an elegy for those lo
st and presumed dead at sea. Their voices merge and divide\, experimentin
 g with pitch\, intonation\, breath\, pacing\, and silence\, transitioning
from operatic singing to theatrical utterances to narrate the realities
of this contemporary tragedy.\n\nDesigned for viewers of all ages\, this
installation is free and open to the public during the regular operating
hours of the Rubenstein Arts Center (Monday through Friday: 10am-8pm and
 Saturday & Sunday: 1pm-6pm).

DESCRIPTION:If a camera can be compared to an eye\, a disintegrating negat

March 28\, 5:30pm\n\nArtist Biography\nHannah Schneider is an artist and
photographer based in Raleigh\, North Carolina. She is a second-year stud
ent in Duke University's Master of Fine Arts in Experimental and Document

at Meredith\, Schneider has fallen in love with the experimentality of cr
eating work there. She is passionate about using photography to push the
boundaries of the media and create narratives that reflect what is seen a

DESCRIPTION:Free Space focuses on how a group of young cosplayers in China
transform an abandoned commercial mall into a vibrant hub for anime enth
usiasts. By asserting their presence into the physical spaces\, these you
th challenge and redefine conventional urban structures through their sha
red interests and creative performances. However\, this seemingly "free s
pace" exists under the looming presence of state surveillance\, where the
right to self-expression remains precarious\, constantly negotiated with
in systems of regulation and control. In this exhibition\, Suanne experim
ents with multiple mobile devices (iPones and iPads) to represent the cos
players' interaction with the mall. She also integrates "Zoom" into this
"free space\," critically examining the concept of "surveillance" within
the contemporary Chinese context\, and questioning how the dynamics of se
lf-expression\,visibility\, state power\, and control intersect across bo
th digital and physical realms.\n\nMarch 20-29\nRubenstein Arts Center\nG

educator\, Suanne Han's art practice utilizes art as a medium to excavat
e self-narratives from the complexities of everyday life. Her work examin
es art's potential as a tool for self-expression\, memory\, and connectio
n\, fostering alternative ways for individuals to engage with both person
al and collective histories. Through interdisciplinary and participatory
art forms\, she seeks to transform traditional gallery spaces and reimagi
ne the spectator-performer dynamic. Suanne is particularly interested in
using art to explore how contemporary Chinese youth\, shaped by the colle
ctive experience of the pandemic\, are renegotiating their relationships
with their immediate surroundings and the broader world.\n\nSuanne is a M

DESCRIPTION:Key to Timeless is an interactive exhibition that frames a con

t extends a story begun by Dingyi's grandfather. His memoir traces his ex

reservoir irrigation and domestic water supply. In 2024\, after his passi
ng\, Dingyi revisited the same reservoir-now a tourist site-uncovering it

red history of the place\, and the history of her grandfather embedded in
this rural Wuhan reservoir. Dingyi frames the conversation between two g
enerations through opposing projection screens\, weaving her grandfather'

DESCRIPTION:April 4-13\nRubenstein Arts Center\nMurthy Agora\nMultimedia I
nstallation\nArtist Hangout April 4\, 4:00pm\n\nKey to Timeless is an int
eractive exhibition that frames a conversation between two generations\,
on family\, nature\, and existence. It extends a story begun by Dingyi's
grandfather. His memoir traces his experiences in rural Wuhan\, China\, c
onstructing a canal in the 1970s for reservoir irrigation and domestic wa
ter supply. In 2024\, after his passing\, Dingyi revisited the same reser
 voir-now a tourist site-uncovering its transformation over time.\n\nThe r
esulting exhibition explores the layered history of the place\, and the h
istory of her grandfather embedded in this rural Wuhan reservoir. Dingyi
frames the conversation between two generations through opposing projecti
on screens\, weaving her grandfather's memoir with her reflections. In th
e center\, a recreated living room displays everyday objects from his wri
tings from the 20th century rural Wuhan\, China\, inviting visitors to en
gage\, read\, and take pieces away.\n\nThrough the interactive installati
on\, the exhibition explores the evolving relationship between Dingyi\, h
er grandfather\, and the environment across generations\, honoring the la
bor of ancestors while contemplating the broader existential crises human
ity faces today.\n\nArtist Biography\nDingyi Xu is a Chinese interdiscipl
inary artist interested in memory\, cultural heritage\, and digital art.
Drawing from personal histories and archive\, her work integrates generat
ed imagery\, photography\, and interactive design.

DESCRIPTION:Those who died return again again human documents a return in
search of traces of ghosts. We journey from the Gulf of Guinea to the Low
country\, tracing along the shores where the two coasts intersect\, overl
ap\, and overflow. In an interrogation of space\, this exhibition engages
with the ghosts of history to explore spaces of spiritual and religious
practice in how they are simultaneously repressive and liberating. These
places are haunted by their histories of violence\, but through this proj
ect\, practices of restraint and the spiritual hybridity across the Afric
an diaspora are considered forms of resistance. How do we represent that
which we have not witnessed?\n\nApril 4-13\nRubenstein Arts Center\nGalle

DESCRIPTION:This site-specific installation by Colombian artist and engine
er Miler Lagos is made of cardboard boxes collected on Duke's campus\, st
acked and carved to resemble the base of a Ceiba tree-an ancient and sacr
ed symbol in Mesoamerican and Amazonian cultures. By reshaping discarded
cardboard to its pre-processed arboreal form\, Lagos confronts viewers wi
th the hidden cost of commerce.\n\nWith the title\, Merx\, Latin for "mer
chandise" and derived from the Roman god Mercury (patron of commerce and
communication/divination)\, Lagos imbues his work with a multi-leveled si
gnificance. The reclaimed cardboard evokes global systems of trade and tr
ansformation. And the Cieba tree connects the shamanic practice of bridgi
ng realms by inserting tobacco leaves into its bark to Duke's historical
entanglement with tobacco as a commodity. In this context\, The Merx Tree
becomes both a reflection of the global impact of distribution\, and a m
onument to the invisible\, often spiritual\, networks embedded within it.

I have always admired writers who can nudge their readers toward a reflec
tive impulse simply with descriptions of the more mundane aspects of life
. My work follows this instinct as an interrogation of the familiar and i
ts evocation of strangeness and mystery.\n\nThe "eerie" is likely the clo

e if nothing is present when there should be something."\n- Mark Fisher T
he Weird and The Eerie\n\nIn attempting to probe the aesthetic experience
of this sensory phenomena\, I turn to mixed media. Through photo\, sound
\, and film this work seeks to evoke the feeling of the eerie. Photos of
suburban landscapes coupled with archival footage work in tandem with a w
arbling electronic score to explore the belief that these images are of s
omewhere which harbors something that should not be\, or perhaps that it
is missing a fundamental component of "place". I am invested in pointing
an audience in the direction of that which we can perceive in a lived spa

the residual traces of the powers that brought them into being.\n\nI bel
ieve that this is a phenomenon worthy of attention. It urges curiosities
about the forces (often intangible and complex webs of them) which dictat

we spend our time. As Fisher succinctly writes\, "[the eerie] turns on t

DESCRIPTION:THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PORTAL\nBy Allison "Sunny" Dean ('26)\n
 On View April 1-13 - Murthy Agora\nRubenstein Arts Center\n\nI am a write
r and artist fixated on using a camera to try and answer my questions. Mo
ving image moves me. In my work\, I reckon with how we can know the parti
culars or characteristics of a landscape but not know the landscape at al
 l. I am infatuated with and desperate to understand decaying places\, wit
h a particular interest in the unkempt physical and temporal residues of
human infrastructure. I explore the allocations of space in systems of su
ppression\, injustice\, and dislocation. My mediums include installation
and moving image\, which act in conversation to obscure reality and recal
l violations and scars inflicted on landscapes by institutions of oppress
ion.  \n\nThis Has Always Been a Portal is twofold. \n\nThe first\, a si
ngle channel short film documenting the landscape and visitation check-in
room at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. Never able to enter\, and alw
ays on the peripheral\, the film experiments with the room's reality thro
ugh narration that recounts the processes of visiting an incarcerated lov
 ed one.  \n\nThe second\, a multimedia installation of the room itself\;
the fleeting and unstable nature of memory physicalized through the struc
tural design. Relying on sensory and spatial residues to guide me\, the r
oom is built on my memories alone. \n\nTogether these works speak to lan
dscapes on the fringe of carceral and civilian life and detail the spatia
l record that is left behind through the movements of bodies in these pas
 sthrough\, temporary spaces.
