DESCRIPTION:This talk explores Haiti's relation to a long history of clima
te colonialism via an engagement with several early Haitian poems\, inclu
ding Hérard Dumesle's -"À travers les sillons par la foudre tracés" from
Voyage dans le Nord d'Haïti\, ou\, Révélation des lieux et des monuments
historiques (Les Cayes: Imprimerie du Gouvernement\, 1824). By working wi
th\, and against\, the climatological imaginary of Western poetic forms\,
this early Haitian literary archive offers glimmers of Kongo\, Yoruba\,
and Amerindian solar and celestial regimes. Allewaert argues that these A
fro-diasporic and Amerindian solar imaginaries generate conceptions of\nn
ature that undercut the models of time and geography that sustain plantat
ion colonialism. The talk concludes with a brief consideration of how thi
s Haitian solar poetics intersects with Aimé Césaire's defiant solar imag
 inary.

DESCRIPTION:A zine is a self-published\, non-commercial magazine\, typical
ly devoted to unconventional subject matter. In this two-hour workshop\,
students will learn zines by making one. Using collage and drawing materi
als\, participants will create pages for a zine on the topic of preservin
g one's spirit. Participants will want to think about what keeps up thei
r spirits when times are hard. Students will leave their creation to be p
rinted and can pick their zine up at a later date. The spirit zine could
inspire others to find ways to feel better.

DESCRIPTION:Around the globe\, 800m people spend more than 10% of their ho
usehold budget on health care\, and nearly 100m of these are pushed into
extreme poverty every year by out-of-pocket health expenses. A big hairy
question facing us is: How can we make healthcare more affordable\, and i
mprove access to quality healthcare resources\, for the people bordering
the poverty line? Poverty remains our number one enemy\, but increasingly
and excitingly\, we see opportunities to flip the situation and create m
ass prosperity. However\, this requires a focus on agricultural innovatio
ns and allied livelihoods. So\, the big question also morphs into: How ca
 n we improve productivity\, reduce risk\, increase income\, and enhance a
ccess to essential goods and services for the poor? Global efforts to cur
b emissions and transition into a low-carbon economy can counterintuitive
ly compromise economic progress in the Global South\, leading to increase
d poverty and inequity. Another hairy question\, then\, is: How do we dev
elop and deploy solutions to converge our development priorities with the
overall emission reduction mission? The list is endless. \n\nLow and mid
dle-income countries need breakthrough technologies to address some of th
ese complex problems\, but an innovation ecosystem is required to address
market failure and support entrepreneurial risk-taking. Social Alpha has
created a Multi-Stage Innovation Curation & Venture Development platform
in India that supports high-impact innovations by making them deployment
 -ready and investible through a full-stack lab-to-market de-risking model
. It has demonstrated that some of the most challenging problems in healt
h\, climate and livelihoods can be solved to achieve sustainable developm
ent goals. However\, this requires a convergence of science and technolog
y\, public policy\, markets\, and communities. In this talk\, Manoj Kumar
will focus on addressing market failure by de-risking innovations\, crea
ting blended capital pools\, and attracting mainstream business interest
in the development sector. It will also highlight that aligning the incen
tives of society\, state\, and markets is necessary to attract entreprene
urial and investment risk-taking\, the two most critical ingredients of t
he innovation economy. \n \n\nManoj Kumar is the Founder of Social Alpha\
, a multistage innovation curation and venture development platform for s
cience and technology start-ups that aim to solve the most critical socia
 l\, economic and environmental challenges.

DESCRIPTION:If we are serious about Duke's mission in cultivating a commun
ity of life-long learners\, then we must recognize that most of that lear
ning for most of the rest of their life will happen outside the classroom
. Duke's Program in American Grand Strategy takes that insight seriously
and tries to construct learning opportunities that are based outside the
classroom and in venues that involve intergenerational learning (includi
ng involving alums). When it works\, it is great\, but it is hard to pul
l off and easy to get wrong - and Peter Feaver will share examples of bot
h types of outcomes.\n\nThe Bass Society Seminar on Teaching Excellence h
ighlights approaches from Bass Society of Fellows faculty\, who are each
recognized for excellence in teaching undergraduates and have a distingui
shed record of scholarship. Throughout the seminar\, Bass Fellows lead se
ssions and highlight an aspect of their successful teaching strategies. S
essions include an interactive component and lunch is provided. Registrat
ion is required and space is limited\; junior faculty are encouraged to a
ttend. For more information\, contact the Student-Faculty Engagement Offi

DESCRIPTION:Japan is undeniably a technologically advanced country\, where
digital technologies play a significant role in various aspects of life
and industry. At the same time\, it has shown a strong analog persistence
. Japan's seeming caution to fully embrace digital technology is nothing
new\; similar attitudes were evident in the 1980s when the country's thri
ving electronics industry sought to capture public interest in personal c
 omputers. Japanese society's slow adoption of PCs-and subsequently\, PC-b
ased internet-has left many scholars scratching their heads. With disposa
ble income being one of the strongest predictors of technology diffusion\
, the Japanese had some of the deepest pockets in the world during the 19
80s.\n\nKang tackles this mystery by comparing Japan with another excepti
onal case: South Korea. This neighboring country has been considered an o
utlier for the opposite reason-its people embraced computer and internet
technologies surprisingly quickly\, despite having a significantly lower
income level than Japan. What explains these contrasting attitudes toward
computers and the internet?\n\nTo answer this question\, Kang traces the
evolution of media discourses surrounding computers and the internet fro
m the 1980s to the 1990s. By analyzing and comparing PC advertisements in
both countries\, he examines what these new machines meant to the Japane
se and Korean publics. In doing so\, he reevaluates the relevance of conv
entional explanations\, such as Japan's aging population and language-inp
ut barriers. Finally\, he situates his findings within broader historical
and cultural contexts\, exploring representations of technology in liter
 ature\, film\, and animation\, including "Godzilla\," "Astro Boy\," and "
Galaxy Express 999."\n\nAbout the speaker:\nInkyu Kang is a professor of
journalism and communication at Penn State University\, Behrend College.
Having earned his MA and PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from the Unive
rsity of Wisconsin-Madison\, he also taught there before transitioning to
Penn State. His experience extends internationally\, encompassing visiti
ng scholar positions at Rikkyo University (2024) and Saint Petersburg Sta
te University (2017). \n\nKang's primary research interests include globa
l media\, visual semiotics\, and new media technology. He is also an awar
d-winning journalist who has written extensively about cultural and techn
ological issues. His work has been featured in outlets such as "The Guard
ian\," "USA Today\," and "Billboard Magazine."

DESCRIPTION:Yitzhak Lewis discusses his most recent book: "Games of Inheri
tance: Kabbalah\, Tradition and Authorship in Jorge Luis Borges\," Rutger
s University Press\, 2025.\n\nGames of Inheritance explores the thought o
f Argentine author and public intellectual Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986)
on questions of authorship and literary tradition. The book focuses on Bo
rges's engagement with Jewish literary and intellectual traditions\, high
lighting the role of this engagement in developing and expressing his vie
ws on these questions. The book argues that the primary relevance of Borg
es's persistent reference to "the Judaic" is not for understanding his at
titude toward Jews and Judaism but for understanding his position in cont
emporary Argentinian debates about nationalism and literature\, empire an
d postcolonialism\, and populism and aesthetics. By broadening the frame
of Borges and the Judaic\, this book shifts the scholarly focus to the po
etic utility of Borges's engagement with Jewish literary and intellectual
traditions. This allows a better understanding of the nuance of his view
s on the issues that most animate his oeuvre: authorship and writing\, li
terature and tradition.\n\nYitzhak Lewis is Assistant Professor of Humani
ties at Duke Kunshan University. He holds a Ph.D. (2016) in Hebrew and Co
mparative Literature from Columbia University. He received his B.A. (2007
) in Comparative Literature\, Psychology\, and Creative Writing\, from th
e Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Yitzhak's current book project\, titled
Games of Inheritance: Kabbalah\, Tradition\, and Writing in Jorge Luis B
orges\, is a study of marginality and mysticism as literary tropes in the
writing of Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges. His previous book\, title
d A Permanent Beginning: R. Nachman of Braslav and Jewish Literary Modern
ity (SUNY Press\, 2020)\, deals with the Russian Imperial context of earl
y modern Hebrew and Yiddish letters. His teaching and research interests
include comparative literature in Hebrew\, Spanish\, Yiddish\, and Englis
h\, literary theory\, transnational writing\, and world literature.
