Asia \, once celebrated symbols for the Blue Revolution\, have become a stand- in culprit for massive mangrove destruction and coastal pollution. Media reports have frequently blamed a large scale or the associated intensive aquaculture technology for causing environmental problems.\n\nSuch assess ment nevertheless tends to misrepresent a reality in which individual coa stal farms are often small with heterogenous technological composition. I t also belies a complex history in which malleable technologies in produc ing crustacean species co-evolved with Asia's developmental states\, inte rnational scientific philanthropy\, and global business and extraction du ring the Cold War and beyond.\n\nIn this talk\, by tracing the evolution of interconnected bio-socio-technical packages of shrimp aquacultures tha t solidified in the 1960s Japan\, 1970s Taiwan\, and 1980s Thailand\, I u nveil how technological designs and business styles favoring different aq uaculture scales took shape in three historical and national contexts\, a nd how species and geography also mattered. In addition\, the land-connec ting\, osmotic water environment offers us new food for savoring the ques tion whether "small is beautiful."\n\nAbout the speaker\n\nLijing Jiang i s an assistant professor in the department of History of Science and Tech nology\, the Johns Hopkins University. She is a historian of modern life sciences and the environment. Jiang is interested in questions regarding how epistemic and cultural interpretations and material manipulations of living organisms shaped the process of knowledge production and further m aterial intervention in diverse cultural and political contexts\, especia lly in East Asia.\n\nHer training began at the Center for Biology and Soc iety\, Arizona State University and developed further as a postdoctoral f ellow at Princeton University\, Nanyang Technological University\, Singap ore\, and Yale University. Many pronoun cements have been made about those who have died by their own hand but wi th little careful attention paid to the words of the dead themselves.\n\n Scripting Suicide in Japan (UC Press\, New Interventions in Japanese Stud ies Series\, 2024) explores far-ranging creations by famous 20th and 21st century Japanese writers and little-known amateurs alike - death poems\, suicide notes\, memorials\, suicide maps and manuals\, and works of lite rature\, film\, and manga that anticipate or respond to an artist's suici de - to consider how suicide is scripted\, and to what end. These words r each out to us to initiate a dialogue with the dead\, one that can reveal why it matters to write into and from the void.\n\nIn this talk\, author Kirsten Cather invites the audience into a discussion of these difficult texts. These are not easy to read\, and nor we can imagine were they eas y ones to write. She has been teaching in the Department of Asian Studies at University of Texas at Austin since 20 05. Her first monograph\, "The Art of Censorship in Postwar Japan" (UHI P ress\, 2012) analyzed Japan's seven landmark obscenity (waisetsu) trials from the translation of D.H. Lawrence's "Lady Chatterley's Lover" in the 1950s to an erotic manga in 2002.\n\nHer most recent book\, "Scripting Su icide in Japan" (UC Press\, New Interventions in Japanese Studies Series\ , 2024) considers how and why individuals write and read in the face and wake of suicide. It analyzes a variety of literary and literal sites of w riting including death poems\, suicide notes\, memorials and tourist site s\, as well as semi-fictional artworks that anticipate or respond to an a rtist's suicide.\n\nBoth projects demonstrate her interest in engaging in transhistorical\, multimedia\, and interdisciplinary research to illumin ate how and why words\, sounds\, objects\, and images matter to a society \, a state\, and its people. Low is the author of Imperial Mecca: Ottoman Arabia and the Indian Ocean Hajj (Colum bia University Press\, 2020). In 2021\, Imperial Mecca received the Middl e East Studies Association's Albert Hourani Book Award and was shortliste d for the British-Kuwait Friendship Society Book Prize. Imperial Mecca ha s also been translated into Arabic and Turkish. He is also the co-editor of The Subjects of Ottoman International Law (Indiana University Press\, 2020). In 2020-2021\, he was a Senior Humanities Fellow for the Study of the Arab World at NYU Abu Dhabi. T his talk considers passages of Julian's writings that appear to respond t o this crisis and in some cases to engage with the controversial new theo logical thinking it brought to the fore. Many of these passages were like ly written not long after she learned that the full meaning of Christ's r evelation was "love\," and they show her struggling to accept this meanin g in light of her growing realization that her revelation was meant for t he church as a whole\, not only for her immediate "evencristen." The anal ysis situates this argument within a larger hypothesis about the stages b y which A Revelation of Love may plausibly have been written and publishe d. One effect of this hypothesis is to urge that we read Julian's book ar chaeologically\, as a record of her repeated rethinkings of specific mome nts and details of her revelation\, in light both of her ongoing studies and of changes in the surrounding religious climate. \n\nAttendees are en couraged to prepare for the event by reading a recent article by Nicholas Watson on the composition of Julian's Revelation of Love. Challenging other accounts that claim that Middle Eastern states turned secular in modern times\, Zeghal shows instead the continuity of the state's custodianship of Islam as the preferred religion. Drawing on intellectual\, political\, and economic history\, she traces this custodianship from early forms of constitutional governance in the nineteenth century through post-Arab Sp ring experiments in democracy. Zeghal argues that the intense debates aro und the implementation and meaning of state support for Islam led to a po litical cleavage between conservatives and their opponents that long pred ated the polarization of the twentieth century that accompanied the emerg ence of mass politics and Islamist movements.\n\nExamining constitutional projects\, public spending\, school enrollments\, and curricula\, Zeghal shows that although modern Muslim-majority polities have imported Wester n techniques of governance\, the state has continued to protect and suppo rt the religion\, community\, and institutions of Islam. She finds that e ven as Middle Eastern states have expanded their nonreligious undertaking s\, they have dramatically increased their per capita supply of public re ligious provisions\, especially Islamic education-further feeding the pol itical schism between Islamists and their adversaries. Zeghal illuminates the tensions inherent in the partnerships between states and the body of Muslim scholars known as the ulama\, whose normative power has endured t hrough a variety of political regimes. Myanmar's world-famous ja de\, rubies\, teak\, gold\, and silver have long enriched its kingdoms. T hese kingdoms used these resources to patronize powerful Buddhist institu tions. \n\nThis presentation explores how distinctive Buddhist practices and doctrines arose from this history of exploiting the land and negotiat ing with the humans\, animals\, and spirits who live there. Set in the Sino-Tibetan border reg ion renamed "Shangri-La" by the Chinese government for tourism promotion\ , Crafting a Tibetan Terroir considers how the deployment of the French n otion of terroir works to create new forms of ethno-regional identities a nd village landscapes through the production of Tibetan wine as a commodi ty. In Shangri-La\, a rapidly developing international ethno-travel desti nation\, European histories and global capitalism are being reestablished and reformulated through viticulture\, which has altered landscapes and livelihoods. \n\nFrom the introduction of vineyards by nineteenth-century French and Swiss Catholic missionaries to make sacramental wine\, to twe nty-first century commercialization\, this ethnography documents the ways Tibetans are indigenizing modernity in the context of economic developme nt on their own terms. It provides timely insight into China's rapid entr y into the global wine market\, highlighting the localized impacts of thi s emergent industry\, which include transformation from subsistence agric ulture to monocropping and intensified agrochemical use. It also addresse s larger issues of international trade\, suggesting that certain commodit ies-stimulants and intoxicants in particular-have long connected Europe a nd the Asia Pacific region\, and that these connections are now being rec onceived in fashioning new industries and identities.\n\nBio:\n\nBrendan A. Galipeau is a Lecturer in Environmental Studies at Binghamton Universi ty. He previously served as Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Nation al Tsing Hua University in Taiwan from 2019 to 2024 and as a postdoctoral fellow in Transnational Asian Studies at Rice University from 2017 to 20 19. He received his PhD in Anthropology from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in 2017 and MA in Applied Anthropology at Oregon State University in 2012.\n\nGalipeau has been conducting research in Tibetan Southwest Ch ina since 2007. His research and publications broadly focus on environmen tal change and human relations with nature in Southwest China and Taiwan\ , with a particular focus on agrarian change\, hydropower resettlement\, and religious ecologies. Yet these are only the most prominent o f over 1\,000 industrial\, colonial\, and regional expos that have been h eld in the archipelago since the late 19th century. \n\nExpos have served as incubators for the wider exhibition industry\, ranging from museums t o professional sport\; as catalysts for economic development\, spawning i nfrastructure\, tourism\, and demand\; and as stages on which national an d local governments can parade their claims. They are also easy to attack \, both as archetypes of spectacle\, reducing us to fodder for the attent ion economy\, and as showcases for state and capital\, so that they might have their way with society and the environment. \n\nThis talk will draw on a recently-published book\, which suggests that the Japanese experien ce of them shows expos to be more complex than such attacks allow. She has published widely on topics such as the history of psychology\, Weimar photography\, literature\, memory and trauma\, and on literature and anthropology. Her latest monograph\, Attention and Distraction in Modern German Literature\, Thought\, and Cul ture\, was published with OUP in 2022. It explores the intertwined histor ies of attention and distraction from the Enlightenment to the present da y\, in literature and thought\, photography and music\, psychology and se lf-help literature. A particular interest of hers is on the Prague write r Franz Kafka. She has published four books on Kafka and is the Co-Direct or of the Oxford Kafka Research Centre. Since 2024\, she is the Principal Investigator of the AHRC research project 'Kafka's Transformative Commun ities'. She is also a member of the Executive Board of the International Walter Benjamin Society and writes regularly for the Times Literary Suppl ement. Since the Cold War\, U.S. universities have relie d on Area Studies as a central framework for shaping world regions\, incl uding the Middle East. This model once rested on long-standing\, albeit c ontested\, assumptions: that knowledge production follows disciplinary bo undaries\, that regions correspond to coherent geographic and cultural un its\, and that university knowledge constitutes a public good.\n\nToday\, migration\, digital networks\, and especially shifting geopolitics chall enge the older ways of debating and imagining regions. At the same time\, funding structures\, institutional priorities\, and political debates ar e reshaping higher education itself. These transformations raise urgent q uestions for Middle East Studies-and for Area Studies more broadly.\n\nHo w might we rethink regionalism for the twenty-first century? What would i t mean to move beyond bounded geographic models toward inter-regional and intra-regional frameworks that emphasize circulation\, comparison\, and connection? How can critical Area Studies address overlapping histories\, diasporas\, transnational movements\, and global systems while still pre serving deep linguistic\, historical\, and cultural expertise?What kind o f institutional structures and ecosystems are needed to sustain such inqu iry?\n\nThis conversation invites scholars and institutions to reconsider how regions are made\, both intellectually and institutionally\, and to imagine new strategies for sustaining Middle East Studies in a rapidly ch anging academic and political landscape. Creative Belonging investigates the forma tion and evolution of the Qiang as a people\, a concept\, and a cultural history. It illuminates how a small ethnic minority group known today as the "Qiang" in China's Himalayan regions have carved out spaces of "creat ive belonging" in their daily practice\, cultural productions\, and self- representations within the parameters of multiculturalism in globalizing China. \n\nCreative Belonging crisscrosses multiple humanistic fields\, s uch as literature\, history\, visual culture\, media studies\, and anthro pology\, to propose an interdisciplinary\, multiethnic new scholarly para digm to incorporate China and the Asia Pacific worlds into the global stu dies of race\, ethnicity\, and identity. In this talk\, Professor Zhang w ill present her innovative research methodologies that combine ethnograph ic fieldwork with textual-archival research in the minority regions of Ch ina.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nYanshuo Zhang is Assistant Professor of Asi an Languages and Literatures at Pomona College\, California. She is an in terdisciplinary scholar of Asia whose research lies at the intersections of literature\, history\, visual culture\, and anthropology. She is the P rincipal Investigator (PI) of the singular national winner of the Inaugur al Luce/ACLS (American Council of Learned Societies) Collaborative Grant in China Studies\, titled "Resituating Humanistic Pedagogy in China Studi es: Incorporating Ethnic Minority Literary and Cultural Productions into North American College Classrooms."\n\nProfessor Zhang is leading a group of scholars\, translators\, artists\, and ethnic minority and indigenous collaborators in mainland China and Taiwan on developing a collective da tabase that would offer innovative and original materials on teaching mul tiethnic China for the English-speaking and multilingual audience interna tionally. This project\, as well as her new book\, aims to bring to light the creative cultural endeavors made by China's non-Han minority groups\ , including literature\, cinema\, ethnographic documentaries\, and folk c ultural heritage. That process genera ted a durable tension between devising methods to meet managerial demands for productivity and improving workers' safety and well-being.\n\nBy tra cing how this tension was negotiated across decades of upheaval\, this bo ok highlights how labor became a key site where the ambitions and contrad ictions of industrial society were visibly exposed.\n\nAbout the speaker: \nVictor Seow is the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Scien ces at Harvard University. He is a historian of technology and science\, specializing in modern China and Japan in their global contexts. His rese arch seeks to advance a more integrated understanding of industrial socie ty by examining how technological artifacts\, scientific knowledge\, and forces of production intersect in shaping economic development\, labor or ganization\, and environmental change\, with particular emphasis on energ y and work as engines of production and levers of governance.\n\nHe is th e author of "Carbon Technocracy: Energy Regimes in Modern East Asia" (Chi cago: University of Chicago Press\, 2022)\, a book that uses the history of East Asia's onetime largest coal mine to explore questions about the r elationship between energy and power in the industrial modern age. It dem onstrates how Japanese imperial\, Chinese Nationalist\, and Chinese Commu nist regimes alike turned to coal as the foundation of industrial growth and state power. This faith in carbon thrived on paradox-anxieties about scarcity alongside fantasies of inexhaustibility-and exacted staggering h uman and environmental costs. The book further reveals that even in the m ost mechanized settings\, extraction was sustained by workers' labor\, wh ich remained indispensable to the technoscientific regime that sought to transcend it. This talk sugg ests how to relate to this object of knowledge\, or Afro-Asian radicalism . I see this task as an exercise in probing a deep well of commitment suf fused with political defeats but also yearning to learn\, evolve\, and ad vance found within the intervening space between Black radicalism and Jap anese intellectual and creative activities in the twentieth century. \n\n In Japanese\, an interstice is defined as ma (間). Attunement toward such a point of entanglement is of utmost importance to Afro-Asian radicalism. The details will be culled from Black Radical Thought in Japan (Universi ty of Washington Press\, 2026)\, which delineates Japanese intellectuals' commitment to Black struggle cultivated through the study and translatio n of Black texts\, many connected to the midcentury U.S. Left.\n\nAbout t he speaker:\nYuichiro Onishi is a scholar of African American intellectua l history\, who locates himself in the field of Afro-Asian studies. He al so continues to investigate the genesis of occupied Okinawa. He began his academic career in the Center for Ethnic Studies at the Borough of Manha ttan Community College of The City University of New York (CUNY). His mos t recent book\, Black Radical Thought in Japan: An Afro-Asian Intellectua l History (University of Washington Press)\, was published in July 2026.\ n\nProfessor Onishi's research specialties include: Black radicalism and internationalism\; African American intellectual history\; Asian American studies\; and transnational American studies. Many of the trees were planted directly by the French\, and trees planted by successive regimes also followed the mo del of those earliest French treescapes. While there is much to cherish a bout Saigon's trees\, they were rooted in a larger colonial discourse thr ough which the French simultaneously justified colonial rule and denigrat ed indigenous Vietnamese modes of habitation. \n\nSimilar dynamics can al so be found in post-war and post-reform Ho Chi Minh City. Like the French \, contemporary government and city leaders also assert their legitimacy through urban tree planting programs\, even as they routinely ignore loca l experience and knowledge by felling trees to make way for infrastructur e projects. City residents regularly seek to resist attempts to fell tree s\, but overt political responses are curtailed by the political controls imposed by Vietnam's single party state\, and they are forced to turn to alternative approaches.\n\nOne such approach\, which I call a poetic pol itics of shade\, emphasizes aesthetics and affective\, embodied experienc es with urban shade\, and mobilizes intense forms of devotion to the tree s. While the people do not win every victory against the developers' chai nsaws\, poetic politics builds from and reinforces enduring relations to urban shade trees that may have the capacity to be effective over the lon g haul.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nErik Harms is Professor of Anthropology an d Chair of the Council on Southeast Asia Studies at Yale University. Rather than treating Tibet as a s ingle religious landscape\, the lecture approaches it through sound and r itual\, bringing into view historical layers that are not fully captured in written sources.\n\nAt the center is a rare music manuscript over one hundred years old\, written in French\, Latin\, and Tibetan and notated i n four-line staff notation. Discovered during fieldwork\, it provides dir ect evidence of how Catholic chant entered a Tibetan context and was inco rporated into local ritual life.\n\nBy bringing together field observatio n and historical materials\, the lecture considers how such evidence resh apes existing narratives and reveals a more complex picture of religion a nd culture in Tibetan regions of China.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nChenhui Su n (孙晨荟) is a musicologist and performer\, a professor at the Institute of Music in the Chinese National Academy of Arts\, and a 2026 visiting scho lar at the Duke Divinity School.\n\nHer research focuses on Chinese Chris tian music\, Chinese traditional music\, and Sino-Western musical exchang e\, bringing together fieldwork\, archival research\, and musical practic e. I develop an alternative critique grounded in Confucia n ethics. It begins by challenging the industry claim that AI companions offer a remedy for loneliness. \n\nAgainst this view\, I argue that Confu cianism values positive solitude as a condition of self-cultivation and a precondition for genuine friendship. I further argue that AI companions are better understood as cyber mothers\, inviting dependency and regressi on rather than ethical development. On this basis\, I also criticize Nobe l prize winner Geoffrey Hinton's proposal that future AGI should be desig ned to exhibit maternal love.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nBella Pei Wang is an assistant professor at the School of Chinese\, the University of Hong Ko ng. Throug h innovative archival research\, it uncovers the crucial roles that local women played in circulating war supplies and currency across the region. \n\nThe result is an intimate and global history of the Korean War that urges us to rethink the often-antithetical relationship between sexual in timacy and market economies in the context of war and occupation.\n\nAbou t the speaker:\nJeongmin Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History. Her research and teaching focuses on the histories of modern Korea and East Asia\, the US in the world\, gender and sexuality\, and mi litarism and capitalism. She is the author of "Black Market Intimacies: T he Transpacific Sexual Economy of the Korean War" (Stanford University Pr ess\, 2026). She has published two articles related to this project in th e Radical History Review and American Historical Review.\n\nShe is curren tly working on two book-length projects. The first\, "Unseemly Military: The Undocumented Workers of U.S. Wars and Occupations in Cold War Asia\," is a study of the gendered and racialized experiences of local civilians who provided essential labor on US overseas bases. The preliminary resea rch for this project has been supported by a SSHRC Insight Development Gr ant and the Dave Abrams and Gene Banning Pan Am Research Grant. The secon d project\, "Money's Military Life\," chronicles the use of military scri p by the Japanese and U.S. army forces in the Asia-Pacific region. Throug h a comparative historical lens\, it traces how the limited monetary valu e of the notes has created and reinforced differing social and labor valu es of colonial and occupied subjects.
