He shows up late\, sweaty\, confused\, and confusing in the Cante rbury pilgrimage\, and his tale speaks only in the barest of terms to any of the other tales to that point or after. Even so\, this talk will sugg est that the Yeoman is at the epicenter of the Canterbury Tales' e mergent and urgent meditations on ecological precarity\, environmental in terimplication\, and the vulnerability of human bodies to their surroundi ngs\, both natural and industrial. Through the Yeoman and his wasteful\, wasting poem\, Chaucer draws together multiple discourses on the nature a nd meaning of waste--both for an individual and for society--and shows ho w poetry itself participates in waste\, whether to curb or hasten it.\n\n Eleanor Johnson is Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literat ure at Columbia University. She specializes in late medieval English pros e\, poetry\, and drama\; medieval poetics and literary philosophy\; law a nd literature in the Middle Ages\; and vernacular theology. It's also not clear why the terms structuralism and post-structuralism have come to characterize a transitional moment in thi s field of thought. In addressing these larger questions and proposing a counter-history of the pivotal moment of the 1960s\, this talk will focu s on the way specific difference-a term given its fullest consideration i n the Medieval Aristotelian tradition-is employed by different French phi losophers\, above all Louis Althusser\, to signal a major rupture or brea k that is nonetheless challenging to discern. Both theorist and actor in this drama\, Althusser\, along with a cast including Rousseau and Lévi-S trauss\, helps us discern why French philosophy may have reached such a p recipitous turning point in 1966 that its very name and being were irrepa rably altered. Jewish cultural and religious traditions\, which had existed only in latent or strongly limited forms prior to 1990\, became explicit and visible after the fall of Communism and began to shape the identities of certain Budape st neighborhoods in quite overt ways. The remembrance of collective traum as has finally become possible to express in the public sphere\, and\, as a result\, Jewish places of memory have multiplied in the city's urban s pace since 1990. Remembering the Jewish past of Budapest\, however\, has several dimensions today which are not at all related to persecution\, Wo rld War II\, and the Holocaust. Initiatives which aim to present former J ewish life worlds to a broader audience\, in fact\, challenge the earlier dominance of the Holocaust in public memory. Various opinion surveys indicate that South African society might ha ve begun to move toward greater cohesion during the first decade of the p ost-Apartheid dispensation\, but thereafter the momentum seems to have gi ven way to the assertion of social divisions\, not just by race but also by ethnicity\, class\, gender\, and other identities. Social differentiat ions sharpened\, with the widening of inequality both between and within identity groups. Consequently\, historically intense social discontent ap pears to have heightened\, which in turn may have hindered economic growt h and contributed to entrenching poverty and aggravating already pervasiv e joblessness. Nigeria and many other countries in the continent are conf ronted with similar challenges. This seminar explores the interplay betwe en inequalities and the erosion of social cohesion\, addressing its impli cations for the economy\, and discusses prospects for forging a more cohe sive society in South Africa and\, more broadly\, in sub-Saharan Africa. The idea is to consider literature and broadly Francophone studies as an ecology of knowledge through which the critical issues of our time can b e thought. Through its infinite machineries of reflexivity\, literature p oints out possible and unsuspected knowledges. By focusing on various asp ects of civilization - knowledge production\, arts\, cultures\, histories of ideas and mentalities - as well as by by broadening its libraries (or ality\, artifacts) and its methodological scope (transcultural studies)\, French and Francophone Studies can engage the major questions of our tim e: mobility\, climate\, memories\, archives\, postcolonial history. But i t can also be a prospective field that studies imaginaries\, future\, mut uality\, relationality.\n\n \nMy ambition is to consider French and Franc ophone Studies as a locus where disciplines\, approaches and methodologie s are considered in their own integrity\, but placed within an ecology wh ere they can interact and produce new knowledges. This necessitates broad ening the methodological scope and shifting the geography of our reason a nd makes the question of which archives and libraries (written text\, ora lity\, cinema\, artifacts) these cultural studies are based on particular ly crucial. And how can stories of eminent Buddhists be adapted to appeal to modern sensibilities? Looking at picture books published by Taiwanese Buddhist organizations\, this talk will discuss how tales of f amous historical monks are retold\, and how they are situated in the cont ext of modern childrearing. Monks are presented as embodying personal cha racteristics worthy of emulation\, and the selection of monks shows how B uddhist exemplars might be imagined for a global age. But these books als o add fun and mischief\, often by showing monks when they were young boys \, before they entered into religious life. Examining the choices made in adapting monastic biographies for children provides a window into the mo tivations and strategies of contemporary Buddhist youth education.\n\nNat asha Heller (Associate Professor\, Religious Studies\, University of Virg inia) studies Chinese Buddhism in the context of cultural and intellectua l history. Her research includes both the pre-modern period (10th through 14th c.) and the contemporary era. Her current book project concerns pic ture books published by Buddhist organizations in Taiwan\, and how such c hildren's fiction not only teaches young people about the Buddhist tradit ion\, but also addresses how to relate to clergy\, family members\, and s ociety. But for almost eight centuries\, it has been the city's cathedral. Unlike other mosques on the Iberian pen insula\, which were demolished and replaced by cathedrals and churches at some point after the Christian conquest\, the Great Mosque of Cordoba su rvived. It was progressively adapted for Catholic worship with relatively minor changes. Then\, in the 16th century\, a strange thing happened: a massive choir and presbytery began to rise from the middle of the buildin g. Over the course of the next two centuries\, the surrounding fabric was progressively "christianized" - only to be "re-islamicized" in the 19th- 20th centuries\, in the era of Romanticism\, Liberalism\, and colonialism . Paradoxically\, re-islamicization reached its highpoint under Franco's ultra-Catholic dictatorship (1939-1975). It might be expected that\, with transition to democracy and freedom of religion\, there would be greater openness to the Islamic past in Cordoba. But in fact\, the opposite occu rred: the last two decades have seen a new wave of christianization\, as Church authorities have sought to downplay\, discredit\, and even deny th e Islamic past. The long struggle over the building's fabric and meaning attests to the continuing power of the Islamic architectural legacy. But it is also a barometer of changing attitudes toward the Islamic past - an d the meaning of that past for Spanish culture and society. Beyond communicating w ith people and navigating through places\, we cannot help but evaluate th em. In this talk\, I will review basic conceptual underpinnings of neuroa esthetics\, a relatively new field that examines the biological bases of aesthetic experiences. I will argue that our brains respond automatically to our aesthetic environment\, by discussing recent results from my lab that focus on faces and architectural interiors. We have hidden brain and behavioral responses to facial beauty. These automatic responses have un fortunate consequences because of the promiscuity of our valuation system s\, which links beauty and morality. Similarly\, our brains respond to ar chitectural interiors based on psychological construct of which we are no t explicitly aware. These responses have implications for the relationshi p between the environment and our sense of well-being.\n\nFood and refres hments will be served.\n\nBio: Anjan Chatterjee is the Frank A. and Gwlad ys H. Elliott Professor and Chair of Neurology at Pennsylvania Hospital a nd the founding director of the Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics. This looming demographic shift will create challenges for the country's social security system and will require new strategies to provide basic public services for senior citizens\, including innovati ve changes to the national elderly care system\, such as community-based and smart care services.\n\nThe speaker\, Dr. Yaoyin Zhu\, has been vice president of China's National Committee on Aging since 2015. Previously\, he held public service positions with the Department of Social Administr ation and researched social welfare and social security in the Institute of Social Welfare and Social Progress in the Ministry of Civil Affairs. P rior to his professional career\, he taught logic and technology philosop hy at Xiamen University School of Law. Particularly\, she will talk a bout how productivity has negotiated\, mediated\, and collaborated with s almon marine ranching amidst the socio-ecological ruins of littoral postw ar Japan. Productivity\, one of the powerful conceptual tools used to leg itimatize political and economic development projects\, has framed govern mentality\, codes\, objectives and technologies in order to engineer coas tal ecosystems and their non-human lives\, mobilize people to imagine and work on behalf of these neo-futures\, and bind human perceptions of mult i-species politics and ethics. \n\nProf. Fukunaga will discuss that the p ractices among local fishers and stock enhancement technologists have led to a dialectic reorganization of this fishery\, a new science-technologi cal imaginary\, even as their lived and local experiences struggle with t he restoration of social and ecological capabilities so that they might c ontinue being fishers amidst these ruins. This talk attempts to redefine diaspora from th e 21st-century perspective and investigates unique characteristics of Kor eans' diasporic experience and sentiments embedded in cultural production and consumption\, and South Koreans' burgeoning aspiration to reconstruc t postmemory. \nMiseong Woo is a professor in the Department of English L anguage and Literature at Yonsei University in Seoul\, South Korea\, and Fulbright Professor of Korean Studies at Emory University for Spring 2020 .
