Yet\, in m any of these available studies\, ethnic identity could not be easily dise ntangled from other dimensions of identity\, such as religion\, class or nationality. Hence\, the independent effect of ethnic differences on soci al cohesion remains unclear. In this paper\, we leverage Singapore's uniq ue demographic composition to measure the extent to which individuals' et hnicity\, national identity\, and class influence their altruism towards outgroup members. We conducted a field experiment wherein we mail misdire cted envelopes to residents containing vouchers and letters cuing for int ended recipients' ethnicity\, class\, and nationality\, and track their r eturns as a measure of altruism. We find little evidence of ethnic favori tism in our data. Instead\, letter recipients are more likely to return m isdirected letters when (i) they perceive that the intended recipients be long to a lower socioeconomic class and (ii) as their education and house hold income increases. Our results also show moderate effects of national solidarity cutting across ethnic boundaries\, wherein Singaporean letter recipients tend to return the letters at a higher rate when the intended recipients are fellow Singaporeans\, regardless of their ethnicity and c lass. We discuss the implications of these findings on ethnic politics\, social harmony\, and nation-building. Drawing on fieldwork in the Republic of Na uru\, the world's smallest island nation\, Julia Morris discusses the rea lities of the island's offshore asylum arrangement with Australia and its impact on islanders\, workforces\, and migrant populations. She explores how this extractive industry is peopled by an ever-shifting cast of refu gee lawyers\, social workers\, clinicians\, policy makers\, and academics globally and how the very structures of Nauru's colonial phosphate indus try and the legacy of the "phosphateer" era made it easy for a new human extractive sector to take root on the island. By detailing the making of and social life of Nauru's asylum system\, Morris shows the institutional fabric\, discourses\, and rhetoric that inform the governance of migrati on around the world. As similar practices of offshoring and outsourcing a sylum have become popular globally\, they are enabled by the mobile labor and expertise of transnational refugee industry workers who carry out th e necessary daily operations. Morris illuminates how refugee rights activ ism and #RefugeesWelcome-style movements are caught up in the hardening o f border enforcement operations worldwide\, calling for freedom of moveme nt that goes beyond adjudicating hierarchies of suffering.\n\n--About the Speaker--\nJulia Morris is Assistant Professor of International Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. But the fleeting and ephemeral nature of gestu res--which Francis Bacon\, in The Advancement of Learning\, described as "transitory hieroglyphics"--means that our knowledge of them is extremely limited. This seminar offers a framework for thinking about this importa nt but elusive dimension of early modern preaching\, and offers some more general reflections on the history of early modern gesture.\n\nParticipa nts are asked to read in advance a paper (to be distributed later) to be prepared for rich discussion. \n\nArnold Hunt has been a curator of early modern manuscripts at the British Library and a lecturer in early modern history at Cambridge University. He currently holds a visiting post as R esearch Associate Professor at Vanderbilt University. His first book\, Th e Art of Hearing\, has been described as "a brilliant and original re-exa mination of the importance of preaching in later Reformation England" (TL S). His second book\, Protestant Bodies: The Social Life of Gesture in Re formation England\, will be published by Cambridge University Press later this year. He is currently writing a social and cultural history of book collecting\, Bibliomania: A History\, for Princeton University Press. After Japan's surr ender and the spring 1946 withdrawal of Soviet forces from Manchuria\, th e U.S. occupation became the chief obstacle to consigning foreign imperia lism in China irrevocably to the past. \n\nChinese leader Chiang Kai-shek lost his country in 1949\, and the U.S. military presence contributed to his defeat. Anti-i mperialist protests were not uncommon at the time\, but this was the firs t in China to prove successful. The surrendering of the concession in Wuh an marked a key shift in Britain's power in China\, and also an important symbolic defeat for the British Empire in Asia. Though usually examined through the prism of national and international revolutionary politics\, to fully comprehend these events we need to understand the complex and co smopolitan city in which they occurred. This paper plunges us into the st reets of Wuhan\, examining the various communities whose politics and per sonalities clashed in 1927. It explores the lives of Chinese workers\, wh ose strikes brought the city to a standstill\, with everyone from factory workers to dockers\, from domestic servants to sex workers\, all withdra wing their labour. It next examines the British community\, who\, alongsi de other Europeans and Americans\, inflicted forms of racial discriminati on that enflamed nationalist sensibilities. Finally\, we examine the live s of the Indian population of Wuhan\, a community who have received very little attention from historians\, yet whose members played a vital role in the events that unfolded in 1927. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nProf. Court ney is a social and environmental historian of modern China. His research focusses upon the city of Wuhan and its rural hinterland\, a region wher e he has lived and conducted research for over five years.\n\nHis monogra ph\, entitled The Nature of Disaster in China\, was the first major study of the 1931 Central China Flood\, a largely forgotten catastrophe that k illed in excess of two million people. In 2019 the American Historical As sociation awarded this monograph the John K. Fairbanks Prize for an outst anding book in East Asian History.\n\nHe has also published on a range of other topics including the (mis)management of disasters under Mao Zedong \, the fate of environmental religion in modern China\, and the impact of industrialisation on urban fire.\nHis current research focusses on the p roblem of heat in modern Chinese cities. He explores how emergent technol ogies such as ice factories\, electic fans\, and air conditioning transfo rmed the cultural and social landscape of Wuhan. He particularly attends to the experiences of youth who were made the primary target of state violence a nd how they cope with novel forms of unfreedom. \n\nBy tracing the politi cal and economic stakes of this emergent internal colonial project\, Darr en Byler demonstrates that state-directed capitalist dispossession is co- constructed with technologies of domination that are truly global.\n\nAbo ut the speaker: Darren Byler is an anthropologist and Assistant Professor of International Studies at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver\, Briti sh Columbia. This visit was part of her coming to c onsciousness as a Jewish woman and marked a crucial step in Lerner's appr oach to Germany as well as a confrontation with her own Nazi persecution. Born in Vienna in 1920 to a wealthy\, acculturated Jewish family\, Gerda \, who later became a feminist writer\, leftist activist\, and history pr ofessor of U.S. Women's History\, escaped Nazi-occupied Europe for the Un ited States in 1939. The lecture uses archival material and publications to analyze how Lerner processed her experiences in Germany and how she po inted out the pitfalls of the German and European culture of remembrance at the time. The case is a reminder of how hard the struggle for a broade r public reappraisal of the Shoah in Germany was\, how much resistance ha d to be overcome\, and how late German-Jewish history found recognition a nd attention in German scholarship-indeed\, not until the 1990s. \n \nBio :\nVera Kallenberg (Dr. phil EHESS Paris/ TU Darmstadt) is a historian wo rking at the crossroads of Jewish studies\, gender studies\, North Americ an studies\, and German studies. T he Baroque utopia also generates an associated but separate space for "wa ste".\nThis talk will examine a few such utopias\, including judge Vasco de Quiroga's 1535 plan to "civilize" the Purépecha people of Michoacán\, and some contemporary examples of resistance\, such as historiographer Fe lipe Guaman Poma de Ayala's anticolonial map of the Andes. I hope to show that Baroque cultural production is intimately connected both to colonia lity -the European conviction that knowledge produced through reason is u niversally applicable\, rather than regionally specific-and to the global izing agenda that the Spanish Crown advanced through Christianity\,capita lism\, and universal monarchy. But Confucian rituals are supposed to benefit not just those with power\, but also those on the bo ttom of social hierarchies. We will illustrate this argument by drawing o n examples of social hierarchies in contemporary China\, from age-based h ierarchies in the family to drinking banquets in academic settings and hi erarchical relations between countries. The point is not to defend the st atus quo but to show how it can be improved by the Confucian ideal of hie rarchical rituals.\n\nAbout the speakers:\nDaniel A. Bell (貝淡寧) is a Prof essor and Chair of Political Theory with the Faculty of Law at the Univer sity of Hong Kong. He served as Dean of the School of Political Science a nd Public Administration at Shandong University (Qingdao) from 2017 to 20 22. His books include "The Dean of Shandong" (2023)\, "Just Hierarchy" (c o-authored with Wang Pei\, 2020)\, "The China Model" (2015)\, "The Spirit of Cities" (co-authored with Avner de-Shalit\, 2012)\, "China's New Conf ucianism" (2008)\, "Beyond Liberal Democracy" (2007)\, and "East Meets We st" (2000)\, all published by Princeton University Press. He is also the author of "Communitarianism and Its Critics" (Oxford University Press\, 1 993). He is the founding editor of the Princeton-China series (Princeton University Press) which translates and publishes original and influential academic works from China. His works have been translated in 23 language s.\n\nWang Pei is an assistant professor at the School of Chinese\, the U niversity of Hong Kong\, teaching courses on Chinese intellectual history and comparative philosophy. She completed her PhD thesis on phenomenolog y at the department of philosophy of Tsinghua University\, and was a join t PhD. student in Université Paris 1. She was a post-doc fellow in Tsingh ua Institute of Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Science. She is t he co-author (with Daniel. A. The Evolution of Scribal Practices and the Cairo Genizah."\n \nIn what ways has the production of Torah Scrolls-often thought to have been a standardized\, unchanging practice across millennia-changed over t ime? In this talk\, we will look at the evolution of specific scribal pra ctices in the production of Torah Scrolls as evidenced in material from T he Cairo Genizah\, focusing on paratextual and parascriptual elements. Th roughout\, special attention will be given to items located in the Rubens tein Library\, such as the Ashkar-Gilson manuscript.\n\nMordechai Weintra ub is a PhD candidate at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a researc her at the Institute of Hebrew Bible Manuscript Research (IHBMR). His dis sertation focuses on codicological aspects of the production of Torah scr olls and is based on information relating to the laws of writing Torah sc rolls found in works of halakha and on a massive photographic database of premodern Torah scrolls from around the world. This presentation traces the many versions of the narrative to explore how comparing the Indian and Chinese films can recenter our un derstanding of global cinema and film circulation. \n\nWhen considering t he many versions of Drishyam\, instead of focusing on tensions between ce nter and periphery\, we can see both the anxieties and the creative power of cultural borrowing and the retelling of narratives in an increasingly inter-connected Asian film market.\n\nAbout the speaker: Krista Van Flei t is Associate Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of South Ca rolina. Her first book\, Literature the People Love: Reading Chinese Tex ts from the Early Maoist period (1949-1966)\, examines cultural productio n in China's Maoist period. \n\nShe is currently researching film connect ions between China and India for a book project titled Bollywood to Beiji ng: Film Exchange and Cultural Production in Asia. She is an Associate Professor of Catholic Studies at De Paul University and the author of Two Guides for the Journey: Thomas Aqui nas and William Langland on the Virtues (Cascade\, 2016). To answer quest ions of fundamental moral theology\, she enlists the help of Thomas Aquin as\, William Langland\, and (of recent note) the psychological sciences.\ n\nA draft of her essay-in-progress\, "'I'd be an unkind king unless I he lp my kin': \nChrist's Peace and Versions of Peace in William Langland's Piers Plowman\," should be read by participants ahead of the semin ar (contact Dr. Michael Cornett at jmems@duke.edu to get a copy). The eme rging essay is organized around the dramatic retelling of Christ's harrow ing of hell in William Langland's Piers Plowman. Counterintuitively\, Chr ist's harrowing of hell is the divine message of peace\, an extension of the Incarnation and Christ's desire to extend mercy and love to humanity. This moment of true peace also provides the hermeneutic key to chart Lan gland's other figurations of Peace in the poem. Langland uses secondary n otions of "peace" to describe institutions in crisis and the limits of cr eaturely participation in divine perfection. Taken together\, true peace and various kinds of "peace" attest to Langland's skillful use of analogi cal language and differentiated use of theological concepts across the po em. Martin Shu ster is Professor of Philosophy and the Isaac Swift Distinguished Profess or of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Hi s research interests are in ethics\, political philosophy\, aesthetics\, critical theory\, and philosophy of religion. He works across a range of traditions and time periods\, oftentimes engaging fields like genocide st udies\, film theory\, television studies\, psychoanalysis\, and various k inds of critical theory. In 2019\, Shuster was Visiting Professor at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (2019). His work has been supported by Project Pericles\, the Templeton Foundation\, and the United States Ho locaust Memorial Museum\, where he was a scholar in residence in 2007-200 8. For years\, he has also been involved with teaching in prisons.\n\nHis latest book is Critical Theory: The Basics in Routledge's The Basics ser ies (it is presently in press and should appear early in 2024). He is cur rently completing two books. The first is Genocide and the State: An Alte rnative History of Modern Political Philosophy. Ranging across several di sciplines-most notably philosophy\, Holocaust and genocide studies\, ethn ic thought\, political and critical theory of various stripes-the book ar gues that conceptually embedded in the innermost core of the Western conc ept of the state from Hobbes to Hegel is a homogenizing imperative that m akes genocide a perpetual byproduct of the global state order. Today's esteemed guests will explore va rious ideas and philosophies through the lenses of civil society and its dissidents and dissonances in different contexts\, from the Arab world\, most prominently contemporary Egypt\, and resonances or contrasts with se lect European examples. The hope is to extract commonalities and parallel s that help us to understand the carceral experience with respect to care and caring\, its reconfiguring of human distances\, and its impact on hu man rights and the suppression of artists. It will include 9-10 speakers discussing their current theor etical challenges\, and their attempts to find new approaches to burning questions. \n\nAs we near a second generation of thought\, already rooted in the current century\, the different literary departments' theoretical courses are still heavily reliant on 20th century theory. Against the ba ckdrop of political upheavals\, climate crisis\, and the attempts to appr opriate Judaism in Israel in the name of nationalistic ideas and forces\, we ask: What are the urgent tasks of the study of Hebrew Literature? Wha t can contemporary Hebrew literature scholarship contribute to these ongo ing discussions? What are the current theoretical approaches that could b e of use to us?\n\nIn this conference\, we aim to discuss the possibiliti es and "embarrassments" of our particular point in time. But demographic shifts--na rrowing of nuclear family consciousness\, a high aging population\, fewer children getting born\, a decrease in marriage and co-habitation\, an in crease in single households--are changing this.\n\nToday\, fewer Japanese have the option\, or desire\, for burial in the family grave. But where to go instead\, and how to find mortuary support? \n\nIn the move to find alternatives to the family grave\, Haruyo Inoue has been a pioneer in Ja pan. A sociologist and a practitioner who started Ending Center\, one of the first alternative burial grounds in Japan where burial is by cherry b lossoms (桜葬sakurasō) instead of the family grave\, Professor Inoue will s peak of the "inclusive relationality" (結縁) promoted here\, and of the end ing support given to single Japanese (おひとり様 ohitorisama).\n\n--Note: this talk will be delivered in Japanese with interpretation by Dr. Jieun Cho. --\n\nAbout the speaker:\nHaruyo Inoue is a retired professor of Toyo Uni versity\, a visiting research fellow at the Institutes of Social Sciences and Contemporary Society at Toyo University\, the director of NPO Ending Center\, and a representative of the Ending Design Institute. Among their various efforts to continue ethnic education rooted in decolonizing theory and praxis\, this presentation examines what I cal l the "triangular collaboration" where Korean residents in Japan\, Japane se citizens and South Korean supporters came together to hold a charity c oncert in Hiroshima in August 2014. Under South Korea's National Security Law (1948~current) which prohibits its citizens from "contacting North K orean residents\," it has been challenging for South Koreans to interact with the members of the Korean school community as they can be defined as "North Koreans." In the triangular collaboration\, the Japanese civic gr oups played a crucial role in creating the space and means for a rare dia sporic encounter by easing tensions involving the two Korea states. The s pace of temporal reunification enabled Koreans in Japan to (re)claim mate rial\, emotional and ideological ties with their homeland(s) as diasporic subjects and assert their full membership as ethnic minorities in Japan simultaneously. This event not only promoted ethnic minority rights to ed ucation but also resisted the forceful erasure of histories and memories of Koreans in Japan that directly speak to Japan's imperial past\, the un ending Korean War and escalating anti-Korean racism and hate.\n\nAbout th e speaker:\nKyung Hee Ha is an assistant professor in the Department of W orld Languages and Cultures at North Carolina State University. Informed by critical scholarship in ethnic studies\, Japanese cultural studies and postcolonial feminism\, Kyung Hee's research engages with subaltern know ledge production among Zainichi Koreans. \n\nShe is currently working on her monograph tentatively titled "Zainichi Koreans at the Intersections o f Empires" that situates Zainichi Koreans at the crossroads of North Kore a\, South Korea\, Japan and the United States and examines poetics and po litics of dissent amidst rising state sanctions\, racist hate crimes\, an d media misrepresentation.\n\nEvent is co-sponsored by the Critical Asian Humanities program (AMES) and the Asian American and Diaspora Studies pr ogram. Democracy's per sistence in India is uncommon among postcolonial societies. By excavating a perspective of how Indians made and understood their own democracy and economy\, Aditya Balasubramanian broadens our picture of the free market \, neoliberalism\, democracy\, and the postcolonial world. In the process \, he helps us understand why geographically specific and culturally root ed histories from the Global South are necessary for qualifying and nuanc ing these ostensibly universal concepts. In the case of Vietnam\, however\, remittances are also caugh t up with memories and traumas of war\, separation and exodus. \n\nConcep tually examining remittances as money\, but also gifts\, this book talk i llustrates how Vietnam's particular postwar refugee and remittance histor ies and channels exacerbate inherent contradictions in the mobile flows o f finance\, people\, goods and services across borders that characterize globalization. \n\nThe observable correlation between remittance receptio n and desires for out-migration contributes to affective migratory cultur es in which the consumption patterns afforded by remittances may be displ aced into a variety of unexpected areas\, with unintended effects. \n\nTh e talk will conclude by examining the transnational scope of some of thos e effects in shaping recent diasporic community formations in the United States.\n\nAbout the speaker: Ivan V. Small is Associate Professor of Ant hropology in the Department of Comparative Cultural Studies at the Univer sity of Houston. He is author of "Currencies of Imagination: Channeling M oney and Chasing Mobility in Vietnam" (Cornell University Press 2019) and co-editor of "Money at the Margins: Global Perspectives on Technology\, Financial Inclusion and Design" (Berghahn Press 2018). \n\nHe has written numerous peer reviewed journal articles\, book chapters\, op-eds and oth er publications examining connections between financial\, bodily and mate rial mobilities in Southeast Asia and global contexts. To address this\, I briefly examine Georg Simmel's work on Wechselwirkungen (i.e. inadequate ly translated as interactions)\; Max Weber's three-fold focus on the conn ections between meaning\, actions\, and structures\; Norbert Elias's thou ghts on the historical genesis of political "interweavings" (Verflechtung en)\; Niklas Luhmann's work on communicative systems\; and Hartmut Rosa's thoughts on "resonance". Despite all conceptual differences among these thinkers and the theoretical strands they represent\, the discussion reve als significant common ground between them. What they share is a recognit ion of the spaces between individuals\, groups\, and institutions\; and o f the complex\, structurally "under-determined" negotiations that take pl ace in those spaces. This recognition helps define the particularities of the "German-language lineage" in question. Its orientation\, so the conc lusion to my talk\, is deeply indebted to the humanities. In other words\ , compared to the Anglophone tradition\, the German-language theorists ex amined here are shown to occupy a place that is much closer to the Geiste swissenschaften. While this is not a novel claim per se\, this discussion reveals what this proximity entails and how it has shaped German-languag e sociologies. Kwon analyzes the persistent des ire of Korean Chinese to "leave to live better" at the intersection betwe en the neoliberalizing regimes of post-socialist China and post-Cold War South Korea.\n\nScrutinizing the tensions and affinities among the Korean Chinese\, North and South Koreans\, and Han Chinese whose lives intertwi ne in the borderland\, Kwon captures the diverse and multifaceted aspirat ions of Korean Chinese workers caught between the ascendant Chinese dream and the waning Korean dream.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nJune Hee Kwon is a ssociate professor in the Asian Studies Program at California State Unive rsity Sacramento.
