DESCRIPTION:This talk presents three different types of feminist literary
practice by science fiction writers in South Korea\, examining their resp
ective narrative strategies and their local and periodical significance.
Respectively exemplifying feminist superhero\, cyberfeminist\, and techno
feminist narratives\, these works demonstrate the rich and diverse potent
ials of science fiction's feminist speculation\, which majorly account\,
I suggest\, for the genre's current popularity among women and queer writ
ers and readers in South Korea.\n\nEvent co-sponsored by Duke Korea Forum
.\n\nProfessor Sunyoung Park is an Associate Professor of East Asian Lang
uages and Cultures and Gender Studies at the University of Southern Calif
ornia. Currently\, she is extending her contextual and interdisciplinary
approach to literary history to the study of popular culture and society
in contemporary Korea. She is working on a book manuscript titled "Starsh
ip Korea: Science Fiction and the Politics of Modernization in South Kore
a\, 1960s-2010s\," whose primary goal is to analyze the cultural politics
of science fiction in Korea against the background of the major politica
l and social shifts of the last fifty years. In addition to offering the
first critical study of its subject matter\, this project will contribute
to global science fiction studies by expanding their horizon beyond curr
ently entrenched Western and Japanese frames of reference.

articipate in a new global education program in Berlin that combined acad
emic study of the cultural and geopolitical implications of migration to
Europe from the Middle East with an internship with Kiron Open Higher Edu
cation\, an NGO that offers open access digital education to refugees. Th
e program was led by Erdag Göknar\, Associate Professor in Duke's Asian a
nd Middle Eastern Studies program\, and Banu Gökariksel\, Associate Profe
ssor of Geography at UNC.\nGöknar and Gökariksel will join Matthew Rascof
f\, who leads the Learning Innovation team that supported the design of t
his program\, and students from the program to discuss the value of being
immersed both intellectually and professionally in the topic of migratio

DESCRIPTION:A long tradition of scholarship has declared the singular infl
uence of St. Paul's theology on early modern English Calvinism and Purita
nism. Paul's accounts of justification\, the law-Gospel relationship\, an
d what now is typically described as Pauline universalism and political t
heology\, touched off the most fateful debates between 16th- and 17th-cen
tury Puritans and Conformists concerning covenant theology\, personal ass
urance\, and church reform. Much of the so-called turn to religion in rec
ent early modern English studies has been a return to Pauline theology. \
n\nIn this lecture\, Paul Cefalu presents a revisionist view: the Fourth
Gospel and First Epistle of St. John the Evangelist were so influential d
uring the period as to share with Pauline theology pride of place as lead
ing apostolic texts on matters Christological\, sacramental\, pneumatolog
ical\, and political. Cefalu will outline several features of a distincti
ve Johannine devotionalism focused on discipleship misunderstanding\, rea
lized eschatology\, John's "high" Christology\, and a theology of comfort
and personal assurance. He will also discuss the Johannine Christology o
f some of George Herbert's devotional poems that focus on the Longinus pi
ercing of Christ. \n\nPaul Cefalu is Frank Lee and Edna M. Smith Professo
r of English at Lafayette College. He recently published The Johannine
Renaissance in Early Modern English Literature and Theology (Oxford

DESCRIPTION:The government of Uttar Pradesh\, in collaboration with resear
chers from Duke\, UPenn and World Bank\, implemented social accountabilit
y (SA) interventions on a large scale in 12 districts in summer 2016. SA
interventions aim to provide information to households about rights and r
esponsibilities\, and also provide facilitation to enable communities to
meet collectively to hold service delivery accountable. We focus attentio
n on 120 villages within 2 of these districts\, where the program was imp
lemented as a randomized controlled experiment with two treatment arms (i
nformation only in one arm and information plus facilitation in the other
arm) and a control arm. Using data from follow up surveys conducted in s
ummer 2018\, we estimate impact of the program. The SA interventions led
to large significant reductions in rates of stunting and undernutrition\,
improved rates of full immunization\, and also improved health seeking b
ehavior for young children as well as for pregnant mothers. The evidence
from this study contributes to emerging evidence on the impact of SA inte
rventions\, and also suggests that in settings such as UP\, facilitation
is a key driver of the success of these interventions.

DESCRIPTION:The Kenan Institute and the Duke Library will hold a two-day
symposium on 1-2 November 2018 entitled "Arabic Medicine Conquers Latin E
urope\, 1050-1300: Methods and Motives\," showing how the accomplished Ar
abic medical writings of the medieval Middle East and Spain were discover
ed\, translated\, and assimilated by a previously wholly unsophisticated
European world. The symposium will mark the opening of the exhibition of
Arabic medical manuscripts at Rubenstein Library. \n\n A keynote lecture
by Prof. Cristina Alvarez Millán of the UNED (Madrid)\, "Arabic Medicine
in the World of Classical Islam: Growth and Achievement" will open the sy
mposium and exhibition on the evening of November 1. A reception will fol
low. On Friday\, November 2\, two panels will track the astonished Europe
ans as they encounter and assimilated that medicine.

DESCRIPTION:There are vast social\, economic\, and political disparities p
laguing our country that disproportionately impact communities of color.
In addition to being disproportionately impacted by the wealth gap\, inca
rceration\, educational inequity\, poor health outcomes\, homelessness\,
etc.\, communities of color are underrepresented in spaces that have the
decision-making power to impact outcomes in their communities.\n\nThe pur
pose of this Foundations in Racial Equity workshop is to provide the hist
ory of the construction of race\, a key component in driving these inequi
ties. This workshop helps participants understand why these inequities ex
ist\, so we can do something about it. This workshop develops shared lang
uage for how we discuss the issues and interrogates the intricate relatio
nship between race and institutional outcomes. This workshop further chal
lenges us to examine the ways in which we have interacted with race on in
ternalized\, interpersonal\, institutional\, and systemic levels.\n\nFaci

orld of Many Worlds\," a search into the possibilities that may emerge fr
om conversations between indigenous collectives and the study of science'

DESCRIPTION:Charles Stevens is an undergraduate student studying history a
t the University of Saint Andrews. He has a particular interest in the ph
ilosophical underpinnings and trade aspects of China's Belt and Road Init
iative\, as well as China's engagement with Central Asia in this context.
\n \nAfter observing some of the Chinese led infrastructure developments
when cycling across Asia in 2016\, he created The New Silk Road Project\
; an expedition\, supported by Jeep and the University of Saint Andrews\,
to document the land-based component of the BRI by compiling interviews
from leading actors and academics across Europe and Asia. He is working o
n building an interactive map to address the deficit in cross-regional ac
ademic communication on the topic and enjoys writing for online and print
-based publications including US-China Focus\, Centre for Strategic and I
nternational Studies and Geographical.\n\nA light lunch will be served.

DESCRIPTION:The college years are prime time for the development of intere
sts and passions that students will pursue in careers and in life. Molly
S. Weeks\, Research Scientist\, Department of Psychology & Neuroscience w
ill present data from two large-scale research studies with students at D
uke and other institutions showing that academic engagement - defined as
students' enthusiasm and passion (or "gusto") for the work they are doing
in college - is linked to diverse indicators of well-being\, including h
igher levels of belonging and lower levels of alcohol use. In addition\,
Weeks will share what we have learned from these studies about the facto
rs that influence student well-being in college\, with a particular empha
sis on belonging and loneliness.\n\nCourse instructors\, academic advisor
s\, and other academic professionals who interact with students play a cr
ucial role in facilitating academic engagement\, and discussion will focu
s on how classroom practices can facilitate and undermine the development
of academic engagement and student well-being more broadly.\nLearning In

DESCRIPTION:After the annexation of Korea in 1910\, Japanese artists enthu
siastically toured their recently acquired colonial territory seeking new
sources for artistic expression. Amongst the resulting images\, the figu
re of the Korean beauty became a prominent and nearly ubiquitous subject.
This talk will trace how this interest coalesced at a critical moment in
which imported Western ideals of depicting beauty\, the inheritance of O
rientalist perceptions\, and the readily available figure of the courtesa
n were melded together into a new erotic trope that was easily consumable
for both Japanese and Korean audiences.\n\nA scholar of East Asian art\,
Nancy Lin's research focuses on modern Japanese and Korean art (late-19t
h century to mid-20th century)\, with special emphasis on the genre of pa
inting. Lin spent the 2015-16 academic year as a postdoctoral fellow at H
arvard University's Korea Institute. Previously\, she spent a year (2011-
12) as a visiting scholar at Seoul National University's Kyujanggak Insti
tute and as a researcher at Tokyo University of the Arts (2010-11). She i
s a graduate of the University of Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:Award-winning filmmaker\, Rumbi Katedza\, is known for her fil
ms addressing political violence\, migration (Asylum)\, and gender (Pla
ying Warriors) in documentary and fiction. In her presentation she will s
creen extracts and discuss her 2 films\, The Axe and the Tree (2011)\, an
d Legislators (work in progress).\n\nThe Axe and the Tree follows four su
rvivors of the 2008 post-election political violence. It explores the imp
act of the violence on their lives\, and their hopes and fears for the fu
ture. The Axe and the Tree tells a universal story of the challenges face
d by victims of organized violence and torture. But in Zimbabwe\, this is
compounded by systemic impunity for these violations\, and the ongoing t
hreat of new violence. \n\nLegislators: In the aftermath of a military ta
keover in Zimbabwe and the subsequent resignation of long-time President
Robert Mugabe\, a number of women campaign for positions in the country's
male-dominated legislature. Against the backdrop of clandestine and over
t intimidation\, they bravely fight for change in a 'new Zimbabwe' that h
as largely been crafted by military men.

umanitarian crisis\, but remains chronically underreported. The war invol
ves almost 10 countries\, including the U.S.\, and has recently come into
the limelight after Jamal Khashoggi's murder. Once celebrated as a succe
ss story of the Arab Spring\, almost eighty percent of the country now ne
eds some form of humanitarian aid. This panel\, through analysts at the Y
emen Peace Project and Oxfam will trace the geopolitical significance of
the war\, and what it teaches us about the future of the Middle East.

brace the Chinese characteristics of their heritage. Several scholar-teac
hers incorporated tenets from traditional Chinese education into their pr
omotion of Islamic knowledge. As a result\, some Sino-Muslims established
an educational network which utilized an Islamic curriculum made up of A
rabic\, Persian\, and Chinese works. The corpus of Chinese Islamic texts
written in this system is collectively labeled the Han Kitab."\n\nKristia
n Petersen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy & Re
ligious Studies at Old Dominion University. His research and teaching int

DESCRIPTION:Over the last two decades\, as Algeria has recovered from the
acute violence of the 1990s and reacted to the political upheavals of the
'Arabic spring\,' many writers and film makers have explored a poetics o
f space\, engaging with issues such as accelerating internal and external
migration\, the political and economic marginalization of the nation's S
outh and the impact of real estate development on urban and exurban lands
capes. Concurrently\, journalists\, publishers and other civil society ac
tors have sought to establish physical and virtual spaces of encounter an
d exchange alongside those controlled by the state. This talk considers t
he intersection between the spatial imaginaries of literature and film an
d modes of social and cultural activism geared toward the creation of new
public spheres. It asks how current practices of social and cultural act
ivism relate to projects of political resistance and reflects on the rela
tionship between the formal and representational economies of literature
and film and the framing context of cultural production.

DESCRIPTION:Chaucer's Canon's Yeoman is a notoriously difficult pilgrim to
parse. He shows up late\, sweaty\, confused\, and confusing in the Cante
rbury pilgrimage\, and his tale speaks only in the barest of terms to any
of the other tales to that point or after. Even so\, this talk will sugg
est that the Yeoman is at the epicenter of the Canterbury Tales' e
mergent and urgent meditations on ecological precarity\, environmental in
terimplication\, and the vulnerability of human bodies to their surroundi
ngs\, both natural and industrial. Through the Yeoman and his wasteful\,
wasting poem\, Chaucer draws together multiple discourses on the nature a
nd meaning of waste--both for an individual and for society--and shows ho
w poetry itself participates in waste\, whether to curb or hasten it.\n\n
Eleanor Johnson is Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literat
ure at Columbia University. She specializes in late medieval English pros
e\, poetry\, and drama\; medieval poetics and literary philosophy\; law a
nd literature in the Middle Ages\; and vernacular theology. This lecture
stems from her current book called Aesthetic Contemplation: Participat
ory Theology in Middle English Prose\, Verse\, and Drama.

DESCRIPTION:The idea that there might exist something called French philos
ophy\, as distinguished from "French theory\," or "theory\," or Continent
al philosophy\, and that it might extend beyond the twentieth century\, i
s not self-evident. It's also not clear why the terms structuralism and
post-structuralism have come to characterize a transitional moment in thi
s field of thought. In addressing these larger questions and proposing a
counter-history of the pivotal moment of the 1960s\, this talk will focu
s on the way specific difference-a term given its fullest consideration i
n the Medieval Aristotelian tradition-is employed by different French phi
losophers\, above all Louis Althusser\, to signal a major rupture or brea
k that is nonetheless challenging to discern. Both theorist and actor in
this drama\, Althusser\, along with a cast including Rousseau and Lévi-S
trauss\, helps us discern why French philosophy may have reached such a p
recipitous turning point in 1966 that its very name and being were irrepa
rably altered.

\nIn recent decades\, the revival of distinct quarters of Budapest has be
en intertwined with the rediscovery of the city's Jewish heritage. Jewish
cultural and religious traditions\, which had existed only in latent or
strongly limited forms prior to 1990\, became explicit and visible after
the fall of Communism and began to shape the identities of certain Budape
st neighborhoods in quite overt ways. The remembrance of collective traum
as has finally become possible to express in the public sphere\, and\, as
a result\, Jewish places of memory have multiplied in the city's urban s
pace since 1990. Remembering the Jewish past of Budapest\, however\, has
several dimensions today which are not at all related to persecution\, Wo
rld War II\, and the Holocaust. Initiatives which aim to present former J
ewish life worlds to a broader audience\, in fact\, challenge the earlier
dominance of the Holocaust in public memory. This lecture aims to explor
e recent practices of remembrance\, stressing the diverse and creative wa
ys the city's Jewish history is remembered and exploited today (e. g. cit
y walks\, educational and museum projects\, commemorations\, festivals\,
theatre performances\, book publishing\, oral history archives\, and loca
l community initiatives.

DESCRIPTION:South Africa is struggling with the challenge of building a na
tion where its citizens are bound by a sense of common purpose and belong
ing. Various opinion surveys indicate that South African society might ha
ve begun to move toward greater cohesion during the first decade of the p
ost-Apartheid dispensation\, but thereafter the momentum seems to have gi
ven way to the assertion of social divisions\, not just by race but also
by ethnicity\, class\, gender\, and other identities. Social differentiat
ions sharpened\, with the widening of inequality both between and within
identity groups. Consequently\, historically intense social discontent ap
pears to have heightened\, which in turn may have hindered economic growt
h and contributed to entrenching poverty and aggravating already pervasiv
e joblessness. Nigeria and many other countries in the continent are conf
ronted with similar challenges. This seminar explores the interplay betwe
en inequalities and the erosion of social cohesion\, addressing its impli
cations for the economy\, and discusses prospects for forging a more cohe
sive society in South Africa and\, more broadly\, in sub-Saharan Africa.

DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, I will rely on my current research around Af
rican humanities to offer a reflection on French and francophone studies.
The idea is to consider literature and broadly Francophone studies as an
ecology of knowledge through which the critical issues of our time can b
e thought. Through its infinite machineries of reflexivity\, literature p
oints out possible and unsuspected knowledges. By focusing on various asp
ects of civilization - knowledge production\, arts\, cultures\, histories
of ideas and mentalities - as well as by by broadening its libraries (or
ality\, artifacts) and its methodological scope (transcultural studies)\,
French and Francophone Studies can engage the major questions of our tim
e: mobility\, climate\, memories\, archives\, postcolonial history. But i
t can also be a prospective field that studies imaginaries\, future\, mut
uality\, relationality.\n\n \nMy ambition is to consider French and Franc
ophone Studies as a locus where disciplines\, approaches and methodologie
s are considered in their own integrity\, but placed within an ecology wh
ere they can interact and produce new knowledges. This necessitates broad
ening the methodological scope and shifting the geography of our reason a
nd makes the question of which archives and libraries (written text\, ora
lity\, cinema\, artifacts) these cultural studies are based on particular
ly crucial.
