DESCRIPTION:Since the early 2000s\, Korean schools in Japan have been subj
ect to state sanctions\, hate speech/crimes and media misrepresentation d
ue to their ties with a pro-North Korea organization in Japan known as Ch
ongryun. Among their various efforts to continue ethnic education rooted
in decolonizing theory and praxis\, this presentation examines what I cal
l the "triangular collaboration" where Korean residents in Japan\, Japane
se citizens and South Korean supporters came together to hold a charity c
oncert in Hiroshima in August 2014. Under South Korea's National Security
Law (1948~current) which prohibits its citizens from "contacting North K
orean residents\," it has been challenging for South Koreans to interact
with the members of the Korean school community as they can be defined as
"North Koreans." In the triangular collaboration\, the Japanese civic gr
oups played a crucial role in creating the space and means for a rare dia
sporic encounter by easing tensions involving the two Korea states. The s
pace of temporal reunification enabled Koreans in Japan to (re)claim mate
rial\, emotional and ideological ties with their homeland(s) as diasporic
subjects and assert their full membership as ethnic minorities in Japan
simultaneously. This event not only promoted ethnic minority rights to ed
ucation but also resisted the forceful erasure of histories and memories
of Koreans in Japan that directly speak to Japan's imperial past\, the un
ending Korean War and escalating anti-Korean racism and hate.\n\nAbout th
e speaker:\nKyung Hee Ha is an assistant professor in the Department of W
orld Languages and Cultures at North Carolina State University. Informed
by critical scholarship in ethnic studies\, Japanese cultural studies and
postcolonial feminism\, Kyung Hee's research engages with subaltern know
ledge production among Zainichi Koreans. \n\nShe is currently working on
her monograph tentatively titled "Zainichi Koreans at the Intersections o
f Empires" that situates Zainichi Koreans at the crossroads of North Kore
a\, South Korea\, Japan and the United States and examines poetics and po
litics of dissent amidst rising state sanctions\, racist hate crimes\, an
d media misrepresentation.\n\nEvent is co-sponsored by the Critical Asian
Humanities program (AMES) and the Asian American and Diaspora Studies pr
 ogram.

DESCRIPTION:What's the difference between mentoring and coaching? In US hi
gher education\, "mentoring" often implies role-modeling and offering adv
ice\, whereas coaching is an increasingly popular\, evidence-based method
to empower people to be accountable for their own growth and development
. Unlike role models and advisors\, coaches listen more than they talk. T
hey ask powerful questions\, and create lots of room for people to reflec
t and see things in new ways.\n\nIf you'd like more strategies in your me
ntoring toolkit-especially in cases where you'd like mentees to take more
ownership of their progress-this workshop is for you. We will spend time
in small groups developing our active listening skills\, and also practi
ce a few basic coaching conversation models. We will also discuss how men
tors might apply a "coaching mindset" to their work as mentors more gener
ally.\n\nModerator: Maria LaMonaca Wisdom\, Director of Faculty Mentoring

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk about historian Aditya Balasubramanian's (A
ustralian National University) first monograph\, Toward a Free Economy: S
wantantra and Opposition Politics in Democratic India (Princeton Universi
ty Press\, 2023)\, which presents the unknown history of economic conserv
atism in India through the steady rise and relatively uneventful decline
of the Swantantra Party in democratic electoral politics. Democracy's per
sistence in India is uncommon among postcolonial societies. By excavating
a perspective of how Indians made and understood their own democracy and
economy\, Aditya Balasubramanian broadens our picture of the free market
\, neoliberalism\, democracy\, and the postcolonial world. In the process
\, he helps us understand why geographically specific and culturally root
ed histories from the Global South are necessary for qualifying and nuanc
 ing these ostensibly universal concepts.

DESCRIPTION:Remittances from the Vietnamese diaspora have played an import
ant role in Vietnam's post Cold War economic development\, providing impo
rtant inputs to a range of household spending areas\, from education to h
ealth care. In the case of Vietnam\, however\, remittances are also caugh
t up with memories and traumas of war\, separation and exodus. \n\nConcep
tually examining remittances as money\, but also gifts\, this book talk i
llustrates how Vietnam's particular postwar refugee and remittance histor
ies and channels exacerbate inherent contradictions in the mobile flows o
f finance\, people\, goods and services across borders that characterize
globalization. \n\nThe observable correlation between remittance receptio
n and desires for out-migration contributes to affective migratory cultur
es in which the consumption patterns afforded by remittances may be displ
aced into a variety of unexpected areas\, with unintended effects. \n\nTh
e talk will conclude by examining the transnational scope of some of thos
e effects in shaping recent diasporic community formations in the United
States.\n\nAbout the speaker: Ivan V. Small is Associate Professor of Ant
hropology in the Department of Comparative Cultural Studies at the Univer
sity of Houston. He is author of "Currencies of Imagination: Channeling M
oney and Chasing Mobility in Vietnam" (Cornell University Press 2019) and
co-editor of "Money at the Margins: Global Perspectives on Technology\,
Financial Inclusion and Design" (Berghahn Press 2018). \n\nHe has written
numerous peer reviewed journal articles\, book chapters\, op-eds and oth
er publications examining connections between financial\, bodily and mate
rial mobilities in Southeast Asia and global contexts. He has been a fell
ow at Fulbright University and the University of Social Sciences and Huma
nities in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam\, the Institute for Money\, Technology
and Financial Inclusion in Irvine California and the Yusof Ishak Institu
te for Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore.\n\nThis event is co-sponsore
d by the Department of Cultural Anthropology and the Asian American & Dia

DESCRIPTION:Theorizing the Social in Germany\, 1900-2024\nIn this talk\, I
examine how key theorists from what one may term a "German-language line
age of sociology" have answered a fundamental\, ontological question: nam
ely the question as to what "the social" actually is. To address this\, I
briefly examine Georg Simmel's work on Wechselwirkungen (i.e. inadequate
ly translated as interactions)\; Max Weber's three-fold focus on the conn
 ections between meaning\, actions\, and structures\; Norbert Elias's thou
ghts on the historical genesis of political "interweavings" (Verflechtung
en)\; Niklas Luhmann's work on communicative systems\; and Hartmut Rosa's
thoughts on "resonance". Despite all conceptual differences among these
thinkers and the theoretical strands they represent\, the discussion reve
als significant common ground between them. What they share is a recognit
ion of the spaces between individuals\, groups\, and institutions\; and o
f the complex\, structurally "under-determined" negotiations that take pl
ace in those spaces. This recognition helps define the particularities of
the "German-language lineage" in question. Its orientation\, so the conc
lusion to my talk\, is deeply indebted to the humanities. In other words\
, compared to the Anglophone tradition\, the German-language theorists ex
amined here are shown to occupy a place that is much closer to the Geiste
swissenschaften. While this is not a novel claim per se\, this discussion
reveals what this proximity entails and how it has shaped German-languag
 e sociologies.

DESCRIPTION:In "Borderland Dreams\," June Hee Kwon explores the trajectory
of the "Korean dream" that has fueled the massive migration of Korean Ch
inese workers from the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in northeast
China to South Korea since the early 1990s.\n\nCharting the interplay of
bodies\, money\, and time\, the ethnography reveals how these migrant wor
kers\, in the course of pursuing their borderland dreams\, are transforme
d into a transnational ethnicized class. Kwon analyzes the persistent des
ire of Korean Chinese to "leave to live better" at the intersection betwe
en the neoliberalizing regimes of post-socialist China and post-Cold War
South Korea.\n\nScrutinizing the tensions and affinities among the Korean
Chinese\, North and South Koreans\, and Han Chinese whose lives intertwi
ne in the borderland\, Kwon captures the diverse and multifaceted aspirat
ions of Korean Chinese workers caught between the ascendant Chinese dream
and the waning Korean dream.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nJune Hee Kwon is a
ssociate professor in the Asian Studies Program at California State Unive
rsity Sacramento. Dr. Kwon\, trained as a cultural anthropologist\, has f
ocused on Korean diaspora and transnational migration\, borderlands and p
olitical ecology\, materiality and affect\, gendered labor and class form
ation\, and human suffering and memories in her teaching and research.\n\
nHer area of expertise spans contemporary Korea (North and South)\, China
\, and Japan and includes postcolonial and post-Cold War culture and poli
tical economy across East Asia.\n\nIn addition to several journal article
s on transnational migration\, Dr. Kwon published her first book\, "Borde
rland Dreams: The Transnational Lives of Korean Chinese Workers" (Duke Un
 iversity Press) in 2023.

DESCRIPTION:This talk begins with two Chinese expressions that seem to end
orse opposite justice principles: 親親相隱 (mutual shielding among kin) and 大
義滅親 (placing justice above family loyalty). Should one shield one's kin f
rom the law\, or turn them in if justice demands it?\n\nFrom this apparen
t contradiction\, Professor Haiyan Lee argues that judicial populism-priv
ileging substantive goals over procedural fairness-is built into the Chin
ese justice tradition in which high justice always trumps low justice. Sh
e illustrates this argument with the 2014 film《黄克功案件》(The Case of Huang K
egong).\nAbout the speaker:\n\nHaiyan Lee is the Walter A. Haas Professor
of Chinese and Comparative Literature at Stanford University. She is the
author of Revolution of the Heart: A Genealogy of Love in China\, 1900-1
950 (Stanford\, 2007)\, The Stranger and the Chinese Moral Imagination (S
tanford\, 2014)\, and A Certain Justice: Toward an Ecology of the Chinese
  Legal Imagination (Chicago\, 2023).

DESCRIPTION:The graduate students of the East Asian & Diaspora Studies Wor
king Group invite you to attend a book talk with Professor Elena Shih as
she discusses her 2023 publication: "Manufacturing Freedom: Sex Work\, An
ti-Trafficking Rehab\, and the Racial Wages of Rescue." A reception follo
ws the talk.\n\nRSVP directly to EADS to attend the reception: https://ti
nyurl.com/rcsbooktalk\n\nAbout the book:\n\nSex worker rescue programs ha
ve become a core focus of the global movement to combat human trafficking
. While these rehabilitation programs promise freedom from enslavement an
d redemptive wages for former sex workers\, such organizations actually p
ropagate a moral economy of low‑wage women's work that obfuscates relatio
ns of race\, gender\, national power\, and inequality. Manufacturing Free
dom is an ethnographic exploration of two American organizations that off
er vocational training in jewelry production to women migrants in China a
nd Thailand as a path out of sex work. In this innovative study\, Elena S
hih argues that anti‑trafficking rescue and rehabilitation projects profi
t off persistent labor abuse of women workers and imagined but savvily ma
rketed narratives of redemption.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nElena Shih is M
anning Assistant Professor of American Studies and Ethnic Studies at Brow
n University\, where she directs a human trafficking research cluster thr
ough the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice.\n\nEvent organized
by the East Asian & Diaspora Studies Group and APSI with support from the

DESCRIPTION:This conference is for Hebrew Literature post-doctoral candida
tes and new PhDs. It will include 9-10 speakers discussing their current
theoretical challenges\, and their attempts to find new approaches to bur
ning questions. \nAs we near a second generation of thought\, already roo
ted in the current century\, the different literary departments' theoreti
cal courses are still heavily reliant on 20th century theory. Against the
backdrop of political upheavals\, climate crisis\, and the attempts to a
ppropriate Judaism in Israel in the name of nationalistic ideas and force
s\, we ask: What are the urgent tasks of the study of Hebrew Literature?
What can contemporary Hebrew literature scholarship contribute to these o
ngoing discussions? What are the current theoretical approaches that coul
d be of use to us?\n\nIn this conference\, we aim to discuss the possibil
ities and "embarrassments" of our particular point in time. This point in
time being\, both on a meta level: our own in-between career stage as po
st-docs and new PhDs\, but also of this stage in history of Hebrew Litera
ture\, the current reality that might shape the thought of Hebrew literat
ure\, our field\, in the near future. \n\nA keynote lecture by Saskia Zio
lkowski\, Associate Professor of Romance Studies at Duke University will
open the conference.\n\nThe conference includes participants from the Uni

is comprised of emerging scholars.\nDiscussions will be held alternately
 in both Hebrew and English.\nהוֹ מְצִיאוּת\, רוּחַ רְפָאִים קְטַנָּה שֶׁל

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this Duke graduate student panel featuring
new research on early modern musicology. We hope to provide an interdisci
plinary audience to engage with these students. \n \nAnalyzing the music
of Giovanni Rovetta (1596-1668)\, maestro of the Basilica of San Marco\,
within the context of seventeenth-century cosmopolitanism and patronage\,
Lacie Eades reveals the music's sonic representation of Venetian prestig
e and power and its appeal to visiting French diplomats. \n \nGuillermo L
uppi approaches the landmark Spanish <em>Cancionero</em> of Juan del Enci
na (ca. 1468-1529) as a cohesive oeuvre\, fully designed in the interarts
\, featuring prose texts\, sacred and secular poetry\, songs\, and dramat
ic plays. The <em>Cancionero</em> emerges as a pivotal work for early mus
ic history that reveals its author's overlooked mastery as a composer\, a
nd underscores the sophistication of Iberian art during the critical tran
sition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.\n \nFollowing the session
\, all in attendance are invited to a dinner social in downtown Durham (l
ocation TBA). Please RSVP to Michael Cornett at jmems@duke.edu if you pla
n to join the group for dinner.

DESCRIPTION:In April 2022\, the Taiwanese government introduced the "forei
gn mid-skilled workers program\," which allows blue-collar migrant worker
s who have worked in the "national development industries" (including agr
 iculture\, fishery\, manufacture\, construction\, and elder care) for mor
e than six years to apply for permeant residency. For many immigration sc
holars\, this program is considered a policy breakthrough for the traditi
onally low-skilled migrant workers to have legal access to long-term sett
lements in Taiwan. It also begs the question: why\, after more than 30 ye
ars of guest worker programs\, did Taiwan decide to offer membership righ
ts to migrant workers?\n\nBuilding on James F. Hollifield's (2004) theory
of the "migration state" and Erin Aeran Chung's (2022) theory of the Eas
t Asian "developmental migration state\," this talk investigates the poli
cy mechanisms and political debates of the "mid-skilled" migrant worker p
olicies in Taiwan. \n\nSpecifically\, Chien highlights the institutional
contexts that shape how a country designs and reforms its migrant worker
policies. She argues that the institutional legacy of the "developmental
state" in Taiwan provides an important foundation for policy reforms for
migrant workers. She also demonstrates how the development of migrant wor
ker policies reflects the legacies of earlier policy decisions by illumin
ating the political actors with access to the policymaking process. \n\nT
he paper is based on archival research and 20 personal interviews with go
vernment bureaucrats\, policymakers\, and migrant worker activists in Tai
wan. The findings of this research contribute to the growing literature o
n the migration state and challenge conventional understandings of migran
t care worker policy as formal and static. Instead\, Chien suggests polic
ies are an organic process\, modified and contested as part of a politica
 l process.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nYi-Chun Chien (PhD\, University of Toro
nto) is an assistant professor of political science at the College of Soc
ial Science at National Chengchi University (NCCU)\, Taiwan. Her teaching
and research interests focus on the politics of international migration\
 , social welfare\, comparative politics\, global migration governance\; c
are migration\; the comparative welfare state\; social policy in East As
ia\; and gender politics. Before joining NCCU\, she was a postdoctoral fe
llow at the School of Political Studies and research chair in Taiwan Stud
ies at the University of Ottawa.

DESCRIPTION:The Covid-19 pandemic is a generation-defining event of global
significance. In this talk\, Dali L. Yang\, the William C. Reavis Profes

DESCRIPTION:In 1945\, researchers on a mission to Hiroshima with the U.S.
Strategic Bombing Survey canvassed survivors of the nuclear attack. This
marked the beginning of global efforts by psychiatrists\, psychologists\,
and other social scientists to tackle the complex ways human minds were
affected by the advent of the nuclear age. This talk traces these efforts
and the ways they were interpreted differently across communities of res
earchers and victims.\n\nZwigenberg explores how the bomb's psychological
impact on survivors was understood before the invention/ discovery of th
e concept of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Psychological and psy
chiatric research on Hiroshima and Nagasaki rarely referred to trauma or
 similar categories. Instead\, institutional\, and political constraints-m
ost notably the psychological sciences' entanglement with Cold War scienc
e-led researchers to concentrate on short-term damage and somatic reactio
ns or even led\, in some cases\, the denial of victims' suffering.\n\nAs
a result\, very few doctors tried to ameliorate suffering. This does not
mean the professions "failed" to diagnose PTSD (a non-existent category a
t the time)\; rather\, both doctors and survivors understood and experien
ced psychological suffering and their role in society differently. This i
s made clear by comparing and connecting the nuclear case with that of Ho
locaust\, military veterans\, and other victims. The book sets out\, firs
t\, to understand the historical\, cultural\, and scientific constraints
in which researchers and victims were acting and\, second\, to explore th
e way suffering was understood in different cultural contexts before PTSD
was a category of analysis.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nRan Zwigenberg is ass
ociate professor at Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses o
n modern Japanese and European history\, with a specialization in memory
and intellectual history. He has taught and lectured in the United States
 \, Europe\, Israel\, and Japan\, and published on issues of war memory\,
 atomic energy\, psychiatry\, heritage\, regionalism\, and survivor politi
cs.\n\nZwigenberg's first book\, "Hiroshima: The Origins of Global Memory
Culture" (Cambridge University Press\, 2014)\, won the 2016 AAS John W.
Hall book award. His latest book\, "Nuclear Minds: Cold War Psychological
Science and the Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki" (Chicago: University
of Chicago\, 2023) deals with the psychological aftermath of the atomic
 bombing of Hiroshima.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibit curators Ernest Zitser and Kimmi Kresica will share th
eir re-examination of Conrad's portable memorial to the land and people h
 e left behind\, followed by a guest lecture by George Z. Gasyna\, Arlys C
onrad Humanities Scholar\, Associate Professor in the Department of Slavi
c Languages and Literatures and the Program in Comparative and World Lite
rature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Visitors will t
hen be welcomed to tour the exhibit with the event speakers from 2:15 - 3
:30pm.\n\nAbout the exhibition:\nThis new library exhibit seeks to educat
e visitors about the little-known Polish-Ukrainian roots of the author of
The Heart of Darkness. Focusing on the family photo album that that the
orphaned victim of Russian imperialism carried with him into permanent e
xile\, the exhibit explores the role of early eastern European photograph
y in commemorating acts of political resistance and mourning the trauma o
f collective and personal loss. In doing so\, it also provides the histor
ical background necessary for understanding the present-day military conf
 lict in Ukraine.\n \nJoseph Conrad's Polish-Ukrainian "Graveyard" can be
viewed online and in the Michael and Karen Stone Family Gallery of Duke U
niversity's David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library between
 October 8\, 2024 and April 5\, 2025.\n\nThis event made possible\, in par

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nViren Murthy's third monograph\, "Pan-Asianism and
Legacy of the Chinese Revolution" (University of Chicago Press\, 2023)\,
shows how intellectuals in China and Japan promoted unity among weak Asia
n nations to resist Western domination.\n\nTo promote such unity\, pan-As
ianists struggled against Eurocentric visions of history articulated by p
hilosophers such as Hegel\, who argued that the Orient had to follow the
West. At the same time\, these thinkers appropriated Hegel's criticisms o
f abstract individualism.\n\nMurthy contends that Japanese and Chinese pa
n-Asianists drew on elements of both Asian and Western culture to posit a
world beyond narrow self-interest\, capitalism\, and imperialism. The le
gacy of pan-Asianism is complex given that Japan employed this ideology t
 o promote imperialism.\n\nConsequently\, postwar Japanese pan-Asianists h
ad to confront the problem of war memory. Postwar pan-Asianists tried to
show that a healthy transnationalism was both possible and necessary to s
truggle against Western imperialism.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nViren Murthy
is a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His pre
sent research project concerns how East Asian intellectuals drew on G.W.F
Hegel to uncover logics to Chinese and Japanese history\, which culminat
e in a new world order inspired by their respective cultures. \n\nIn addi
tion to projects connected to East Asia\, he is also involved in a projec
t on South Indian Classical Music and Tamil Identity\, which also explore
s issues of how traditions have been reconstituted by capitalist modernit
 y. He has also been interested in how Marxists in (primarily in the North
Atlantic) have drawn on Jewish Messianism to confront capitalist moderni
 ty.

This talk centers on a simple question: in what ways does our understandi
ng of American history and Chinese history of the crucial century\, 1750-
1850\, remain inadequate if we fail to look at the intimate connections b
etween the slave trade and the opium trade? The Atlantic Triangular Trade
and the Opium Trade to China continue to be treated as if these were occ
urring in separate economic world systems\, and that what went down in At
lantic waters had little impact on China in the 1750s and up through to t
he Opium War. This is a partial view. Professor Mazumdar points instead t
o the integrations of the Atlantic and Indian-Pacific worlds that had alr
eady developed with the purchase price of slaves in Africa was set in Asi
an goods\, textiles and cowries.\n\nThe Seven Years War (1756-63) forms a
turning point in world history. Drawing on the private papers of New Eng
land based traders\, Mazumdar shows how\, in the wake of the Seven Years
War and the American Revolution that followed as result of the War\, saw
the emergence of new group of American merchant-capitalists. A group of t
hem linked activities in the Atlantic slave trade with entry into the Ind
ia-China opium trade\, and became the first generation of American indust
rialists\, as they moved their capital accumulated through the China trad
e into banking\, infrastructural and educational investments in America.
And in at least one unusual instance\, American merchants also invested t
he capital on behalf of a Chinese Hong merchant who had befriended them.\
n\nIn conclusion\, Mazumdar will touch on how the old slave trade ships w
ere redeployed to bring indentured labor from China and India to work in
the Caribbean\, a closing note on the circulations of capital and labor i
n the making of the modern world.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nSucheta Mazumdar
is Associate Professor Emerita\, Department of History\, Duke University
\, specializing in the history of late imperial China. She focuses on the
history of South China and Guangdong province in particular\, and brings
together the connective histories of China and India to explore question
 s of historical change.

DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, fungi have attracted popular imagination as
a source for exploring new social relations\, ethics and philosophy. The
fungi's role as decomposers and relation builders in the ecosystem inspir
es scientists\, social activists and artists to experiment with new pract
ices. The common thread among diverse scientific\, citizenry and artistic
works is to challenge the fundamental values that have supported the dev
elopment of industrial society and its environmental consequences\, such
as possessive individualism and human exceptionalism.\n\nThis talk traces
the activities of scientists and citizens who engage in revitalizing for
ests to bring back matsutake mushrooms in Japan. It explores how this cha
rismatic fungus inspired people to develop new social relations and envir
onmental practices. How do their engagements with matsutake develop criti
cal reflections on the history of the twentieth century\, especially the
industrialization and the colonial legacies in Japan and beyond? How does
the matsutake guide people to develop new forms of common land usage and
collective activities in post-industrial society? What are the challenge
s of maintaining the "new commons"?\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nShiho Satsuk
a is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Toronto.
Her research focuses on the politics of knowledge\, anthropology of envi
ronment\, nature\, science\, and capitalism. Her first book\, "Nature in
Translation: Japanese Tourism Encounters the Canadian Rockies" (2015)\, e
xplores the politics of knowledge translation by analyzing the ways Japan
ese local tour guides translate Canadian national parks' ecological knowl
edge to tourists from Japan. She has also co-edited "The World Multiple:
The Quotidian Politics of Knowing and Generating Entangled Worlds" (2019)
.\n\nShe is currently working on her second book project\, tentatively en
titled "Undoing the Twentieth Century with Mushrooms." The project traces
interspecies encounters in mushroom science and satoyama forest revitali
zation movements inspired by the charisma of matsutake mushrooms. The pro
ject explores the possibilities and challenges of dissolving the twentiet
h-century style state-science-industrial complex and of generating practi
ces of co-habitation among various human and nonhuman beings on the earth
. She is also participating in some art projects which intersect visual a
rts and natural and social sciences to explore what we can learn from fun
 gi.

DESCRIPTION:The fields of second language acquisition and instruction in t
he U.S. have historically been concerned with the monolingual English spe
 aker acquiring a 2nd language\, in a classroom setting\, for use abroad.
In contrast\, heritage speakers of Spanish are by definition bilingual wi
th most of their language experience happening in their own homes and com
munities. Not surprisingly\, models of acquisition and instruction adapte
d from the former context to the latter both underestimate heritage speak
ers language ability and misunderstand their instructional needs. This mi
smatch is often blamed on the students themselves\, positioning them as s
omehow deficient (Higby et.al\, 2023). So what makes the heritage Spanish
speaker unique? What are their strengths and needs and how can each be a
ddressed in a classroom setting? In this talk\, Marshall will present a m
odel for heritage language acquisition that takes into account the intern
al cognitive processes of language acquisition as well as the external cu
ltural and sociolinguistic realities that can either encourage or discour
age language use and development. In particular\, she addresses the tensi
on between different language varieties\, including U.S. Spanish\, and th
e standardized language varieties that are prioritized in Spanish classro
oms. She then proposes a reimagining of the Spanish heritage classroom as
a space for students to acquire both the linguistic and metalinguistic t
ools they need to define and defend their language rights. She argues tha
t rather than focus on arbitrary and decontextualized grammatical structu
res\, heritage Spanish classrooms must welcome and acknowledge the entire
ty of a student's language repertoire as both valid and valuable to their
continued language development. When the primary goal of the language cl
assroom is to serve the language goals heritage speakers define for thems
elves it serves as a foundation for continued language use and developmen
t beyond the classroom. Megan Marshall is an Assistant Instructional Pro
fessor of Spanish at the University of Chicago in the Department of Roman
ce Languages and Literatures and Spanish Heritage Language Program Coordi
 nator.

DESCRIPTION:Contributing to the transnational turn in Asian dance studies\
, this talk reconsiders conventional understandings of Cold War dance his
tory and histories of dance in the socialist world by looking at the firs
t visit of dancers from Latin America to the People's Republic of China.
In 1957\, two groups of dancers from Mexico toured China: the first inclu
ded two dancers\, Josefina Lavalle and Óscar Puente\; the second included
thirty-eight dancers led by Guillermina Bravo and Elena Noriega. Many as
pects of this first encounter between Chinese and Mexican dancers on Chin
ese soil are surprising and thought-provoking.\n\nPerhaps most unexpected
\, however\, is that the Mexican dancers who visited China were not balle
t dancers\, nor were they members of Amalia Hernández's famed Ballet Folk
lórico\, the two styles most often associated with dance in the socialist
world during this time. Rather\, they were modern dancers mentored by ch
oreographers from the United States.\n\nIn this talk\, Wilcox excavates C
hinese-language records to provide the first detailed scholarly account o
f these two tours. Engaging with the secondary scholarship on Mexican dan
ce history\, Wilcox examines the tours through the lens of Jose Luis Reyn
oso's concept of "embodied mestizo modernisms\," considering the role of
linguistic translation and transnational leftist dance networks in mediat
ing Mexican dance to Chinese audiences.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nEmily Wi
lcox is Margaret Hamilton Professor of Chinese Studies at William & Mary
and a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow in Dance Studies. She is the author\, co-edi
tor\, or translator of six books: "Revolutionary Bodies: Chinese Dance an
d the Socialist Legacy" (winner of the 2019 DSA de la Torre Bueno Award)
and its Chinese translation\; "Corporeal Politics: Dancing East Asia"\; "
Inter-Asia in Motion: Dance as Method"\; "Teaching Film from the People's
Republic of China"\; and "Creating With Roots: Contemporary Chinese Nati
onal Folk Dance."\n\nShe is co-creator of the University of Michigan Chin
ese Dance Collection and director of the oral history project "Planting S
eeds: ADF and Modern Dance in China."

DESCRIPTION:About the Book\n\nShifts the conversation from abstract "globa
l warming" to the deeply human impacts of heat-and how our efforts to kee
p cool have made the problem worse.\n \nDespite the flames of record-brea
king temperatures licking at our feet\, most people fail to fully grasp t
he gravity of environmental overheating. What acquired habits and conveni
ences allow us to turn a blind eye with an air of detachment? Using examp
les from the hottest places on earth\, Heat\, a History shows how scienti
fic methods of accounting for heat and modern forms of acclimatization ha
ve desensitized us to climate change.\n \nUbiquitous air conditioning\, s
hifts in urban planning\, and changes in mobility have served as temporar
y remedies for escaping the heat in hotspots such as the twentieth-centur
y Middle East. However\, all of these measures have ultimately fueled not
only greenhouse gas emissions but also a collective myopia regarding the
impact of rising temperatures. Identifying the scientific\, economic\, a
nd cultural forces that have numbed our responses\, this book charts a wa
y out of short-term thinking and towards meaningful action.\n\nAbout the
Author\n\nOn Barak is a social and cultural historian of science and tech
nology and Professor of Middle Eastern and African History at Tel Aviv Un
iversity. He is author of four previous books\, including Powering Empire
: How Coal Made the Middle East and Sparked Global Carbonization.

DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, large coastal shrimp farms in Southeast Asia
\, once celebrated symbols for the Blue Revolution\, have become a stand-
in culprit for massive mangrove destruction and coastal pollution. Media
reports have frequently blamed a large scale or the associated intensive
aquaculture technology for causing environmental problems.\n\nSuch assess
ment nevertheless tends to misrepresent a reality in which individual coa
stal farms are often small with heterogenous technological composition. I
t also belies a complex history in which malleable technologies in produc
ing crustacean species co-evolved with Asia's developmental states\, inte
rnational scientific philanthropy\, and global business and extraction du
ring the Cold War and beyond.\n\nIn this talk\, by tracing the evolution
of interconnected bio-socio-technical packages of shrimp aquacultures tha
 t solidified in the 1960s Japan\, 1970s Taiwan\, and 1980s Thailand\, I u
nveil how technological designs and business styles favoring different aq
uaculture scales took shape in three historical and national contexts\, a
nd how species and geography also mattered. In addition\, the land-connec
ting\, osmotic water environment offers us new food for savoring the ques
tion whether "small is beautiful."\n\nAbout the speaker\n\nLijing Jiang i
s an assistant professor in the department of History of Science and Tech
nology\, the Johns Hopkins University. She is a historian of modern life
sciences and the environment. Jiang is interested in questions regarding
how epistemic and cultural interpretations and material manipulations of
living organisms shaped the process of knowledge production and further m
aterial intervention in diverse cultural and political contexts\, especia
lly in East Asia.\n\nHer training began at the Center for Biology and Soc
iety\, Arizona State University and developed further as a postdoctoral f
ellow at Princeton University\, Nanyang Technological University\, Singap
ore\, and Yale University. Her first monograph in progress is titled "The
Entangled Model Fish: Nations\, Environments\, and Ornamental Fish as Ex
perimental Animals." It gives a historical account of how goldfish\, meda
ka\, and zebrafish became model organisms in the life sciences in twentie
 th-century China\, Japan\, and the United States.
