DESCRIPTION:The Anthony J. Drexel Biddle\, Jr. Lecture in International St
udies was established by Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans and James H. Seman
s and their family to honor Mrs. Semans' father\, Anthony Joseph Drexel B
iddle\, Jr.\, who had a distinguished career as a diplomat in the service
of the United States\, and was an original signer of The Duke Endowment.
The lecture symbolizes Duke University's continuing commitment to promot
ing international understanding. \n\nThe Honorable Monica Medina is an Ar
nhold Distinguished Fellow at Conservation International. From 2021-2023\
, she was the Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International E
nvironmental and Scientific Affairs and the first U.S. Special Envoy for
Biodiversity and Water Resources at the U.S. State Department. In additio
n\, from 2012-2013\, Ms. Medina served as Special Assistant to the Secret
ary of Defense\, and from 2009-2012 as the Principal Deputy Undersecretar
y of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere at the National Oceanic and Atmos
pheric Administration.\n\nMs. Medina is a member of the Council on Foreig
n Relations. She attended Georgetown University on an Army R.O.T.C. schol
arship and began her legal career on active duty in the Honor's Program o
f the Army General Counsel's office. For her service in the Army\, Ms. Me
dina was awarded an Army Commendation Medal in 1989\, and a Meritorious S
ervice Medal in 1990. In 2013\, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta awarded
Ms. Medina the Department of Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal\
, its highest civilian honor. \n\nA New Foreign Policy Paradigm for the
Sustainable Future of People and the Planet\n\nThe world is facing numero
us challenges brought on by industrialization. Given the tensions and con
flict in the world\, it is surprising and propitious that so many global
environmental agreements are being forged today. From the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals\, to the Paris Climate Accord\, to the Glob
al Biodiversity Framework\, to the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction Agr
eement for the high seas\, we see signs of global cooperation that show p
romise and\, if successful\, will be unprecedented in history. \n\nWhat
would improve the chances of success for these global agreements and init
iatives? And how will the United States - the "indispensable nation" - p
lay a role? How will the United States and the world adapt foreign policy
and cooperation to meet this moment? This year's lecture and discussion
 will consider these questions.

DESCRIPTION:Join Kris Graves for a discussion on his project "American Mon
uments" on view in the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library
.\n\nRefreshments and exhibit viewing will begin at 5pm\, with artist's t
alk starting at 5:30pm. \n\nThis group of 16 photographs by Kris Graves c
aptures a series of projections superimposed on the 60-foot-tall statue o
f Confederate General Robert E. Lee\, now removed from downtown Richmond\
, Virginia. Interspersed are photographs of other Southern monuments\, co
vered and removed\, demonstrating the shifting public opinion about Confe
derate Civil War monuments after the death of George Floyd.\n\nIn the ope
ning statement to the monograph\, writer Diana McClure begins\, "In the s
ummer of 2020 a collective uprising rooted in local civic engagements\, r
icocheted around the world in response to the murder of George Floyd by M
inneapolis police officers. It relied on one of the central pillars of De
mocracy - peaceful protest. Although grounded in the particular\, the emb
odied actions of the multitudes illuminated larger universal questions of
basic human rights and dignity in the 21st century. The echo of empathy\
, anger and pain born from the eight minutes and 46 seconds of viral vide
o that captured Floyd's passing\, resonated not only in the United States
\, but in ongoing struggles across the globe\, from Hong Kong to Belarus
and beyond. While the breadth of these issues touches every corner of the
earth\, it is the murder of individual Black lives intertwined in the br
utal history of the United States that is the center of Kris Graves' phot
 ographic project American Monuments."\n\nArtist Bio\nKris Graves (b. 1982
\, New York\, NY) is an artist and publisher based in New York and Califo
rnia. Using a mix of conceptual and documentary practices\, Graves photog
raphs the subtleties of societal power and its impact on the built enviro
nment. He explores how capitalism and power have shaped countries-and how
that can be seen and experienced in everyday life. Graves also works to
elevate the representation of people of color in the fine art canon\, and
to create opportunities for conversation about race\, representation\, a
nd urban life. He photographs to preserve memory.\n\n[Photograph by Kris

DESCRIPTION:Floods\, droughts\, storms\, sea-level rise\, changing rainfal
l and rising temperatures intensify the fragility and vulnerability of co
mmunities\, particularly in the developing world. Some will adapt by migr
ating. Others may become trapped\, lacking the resources to move. \n\nCom
munities can adapt to climate threats while remaining in place if they ha
ve opportunities to build resilience. However\, the United Nations (UN) e
stimates that more than $200 billion is needed annually to support develo
ping countries' adaptation to climate change. Current global aid covers l
ess than one-tenth of that sum. \n\nJoin us in exploring this challenge-a
nd potential solutions-on September 19-20\, 2024\, at a Duke Climate Coll
aboration Symposium hosted by the Duke Program on Climate\, Resilience\,
and Mobility\; the Duke Office of Global Affairs\; and the Duke Climate C
 ommitment. \n\nThe symposium opens on Thursday\, September 19\, with a k
eynote address by Indermit Gill (Chief Economist\, World Bank Group) and
a panel focused on building resilience to climate change and the likely e
ffects of these efforts on human mobility. The expert panelists will also
discuss the potential for collaboration between NGOs\, IGOs\, government
agencies\, think tanks and academic researchers to enhance the knowledge
frontier and improve policy response on these issues.\n\nPanelists inclu
de Laurie Ashley (Climate Adaptation and Resilience Advisor\, Center for
Resilience\, USAID Bureau for Resilience\, Environment and Food Security)
\, Nicole Franz (Equitable Livelihoods Team Leader\, Fisheries and Aquacu
lture Division\, Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN)\, Christian
Lara (Strategic Planning Officer and Head of Resident Coordinator Office
\, UN)\, Marie McAuliffe (Head\, Migration Research and Publications Divi
sion\, International Organization for Migration) and Marie-Soleil Turmel
(Science Advisor\, Latin America and Caribbean Region\, Catholic Relief S
ervices).\n\nThe symposium continues with an invitation-only workshop on
Friday\, September 20\, to further explore partnerships between researche
rs at Duke and non-academic organizations on topics at the intersection o
f climate change\, migration and resilience.\n\nThe symposium is the thir
d of the Duke Climate Collaboration Symposia\, a series of convenings des
igned to accelerate climate solutions by developing new collaborations am
ong Duke scholars and external partners.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Dr. Margaret Price\, Associate
Professor and Director of the Disability Studies Program at Ohio State U
niversity and author of "Crip Spacetime: Access\, Failure\, and Accountab
ility in Academic Life" (Duke University Press\, 2024)\, and Dr. Hannah T
aylor\, Lecturer in the Thompson Writing Program.\n\nIn her new book\, Pr
ice intervenes in the competitive\, productivity-focused realm of academi
a by sharing the everyday experiences of disabled academics. Drawing on m
ore than three hundred interviews and survey responses\, Price demonstrat
es that individual accommodations-the primary way universities address ac
cessibility-actually impede access rather than enhance it.\n\nLight refre
shments will be served. Books will be available fo purchase and signing.\
n\nIn-person but participants can also join on Zoom.\n\nCo-sponsored by t
he Duke Disability Inclusion & Community Empowerment Affinity Group (DICE
)\, the Department of English\, and Duke University Press.\n\nPlease regi
ster to attend by clicking "More Event Information" below.

DESCRIPTION:Join Duke Law professor James Boyle to explore questions of ho
w artificial intelligence may challenge our notions of personhood as it a
dvances and claims of consciousness become more credible\, which comprise
his new book "The Line: AI and the Future of Personhood."\n\nChatbots li
ke ChatGPT have challenged human exceptionalism: we are no longer the onl
y beings capable of generating language and ideas fluently. Chatbots are
not conscious. But what happens in the future if the claims to consciousn
ess are more credible? In "The Line\," James Boyle explores what these ch
anges might do to our concept of personhood\, to "the line" we believe se
parates our species from the rest of the world\, but also separates "pers
ons" with legal rights from objects.\n\n"The Line" is published by the MI
T Press and will be released as a physical volume for purchase\, but also
as a free open access ebook download\, made possible by the Duke Univers
ity Libraries' Open Monograph Award. Join the Libraries in celebrating th
e release of "The Line" and open access to groundbreaking Duke research!

DESCRIPTION:In higher education\, there is a tendency to try to diagnose d
isabled students and default to accommodations rather than designing more
accessible teaching and learning environments. This presentation will ad
dress how principles of universal design can be implemented by faculty\,
administrators\, and staff to design learning environments that are acces
sible\, rather than simply accommodating of difference. \n\nBased on idea
s from Rhetorics of Overcoming: Rewriting Narratives of Disability and Ac
cessibility in Writing Studies\, I offer universal design as a framework
both for foregrounding accessibility and for intentionally making space f
or crip ways of knowing\, learning\, and being in college classrooms. Dis
ability is often positioned as something that must be overcome\, but I fo
cus on ways that we can actively value disability and disabled meaning-ma
king practices. I will identify examples of inaccessible teaching practic
es and learning environments\, as well as practical strategies for resist
 ing rhetorics of overcoming.\n\nLUNCH:11:00-11:30\nTalk:11:30-12:15\nQ+A:
12:15-12:30\n\nOpen to all members of the Duke community. Space is limite
