DESCRIPTION:Join Duke University professor Frank Bruni for a conversation
with Kody Kinsley\, the former Secretary of Health and Human Services for
North Carolina\, about strategies for working across party lines\, how h
e thinks Democrats could better communicate with voters who are skeptical
of the party\, and ways in which all of us can move beyond political tri
balism to find common ground.\n\nKody Kinsley was the state's top health
official\, under Gov. Roy Cooper\, from early 2022 to early 2025. He play
ed a pivotal role in persuading the state's Republican lawmakers to appro
ve Medicaid expansion - and insure hundreds of thousands of previously un
insured North Carolinians - under the Affordable Care Act. That success p
rompted the publication The Assembly\, in a lengthy profile\, to call him
state Republicans' "favorite Democrat." A native of Wilmington\, N.C.\,
Kinsley grew up without health insurance and was the first person in his
family to attend college.\n\nFrank Bruni teaches at Duke's Sanford School
of Public Policy as part of the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Demo
cracy. He's also a longtime writer for The New York Times and the author
of five bestselling books\, including\, most recently\, The Age of Grieva
nce\, about the sources of - and remedies for - America's political divis
ions.\n\nThe "Independent Thinkers" series of Frank's conversations with
public figures who defy reductive political labels is part of the Provost
's Initiative on Pluralism\, Free Inquiry and Belonging. This is the firs
t conversation in the series. The second will be with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-C
alif.) on Nov. 10.\n\nFor attendees needing parking accommodations\, plea

ham\, NC 27710.\n\nTo register\, click on the More Event Information butt

DESCRIPTION:Following two medical missions to Gaza in late 2023 and early
2024\, Duke University neurosurgeon David Hasan began sharing his vision
for a village that could house\, feed\, teach and care for children orpha
ned by the Israel-Hamas war. After more than a year of work to rally volu
nteers\, donors and potential partners\, Hasan has opened the Academy of
Hope\, a school and feeding center in the city of Deir al-Balah. Its supp

ation has also taken over a nearby shelter medical clinic and augmented t
he small staff with telehealth services through a network of physicians a
round the world\, while also making efforts to import baby formula and ot
her foodstuffs. Dr. Hasan will share his story of bringing hope to a regi

DESCRIPTION:In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month\, t
he Duke Disability Inclusion and Community Empowerment Affinity Group (DI
CE) will be hosting an author talk with Duke faculty member Frank Bruni o
n his 2023 memoir The Beauty of Dusk. In it\, Bruni shares the story of w
hat it was like for him to suddenly acquire a permanent disability later
in life-a rare stroke left him "functionally blind" in one eye overnight
in late 2017. DICE would like to spotlight Bruni's story because people a
re not just born with a disability or slowly age into disability-anyone c
an become temporarily or permanently disabled at any time\, which is one
reason why accessibility is important\, including in the workplace.\n\nTh
is hybrid event will take place in person in the Holsti-Anderson Family A
ssembly Room (Rubenstein Library 153) and on Zoom. CART service will be p
rovided and accessible parking and building information can be found on t
he library website\, but any specific accommodation requests should be re
ferred to Access and Accommodation Services. Members of the Duke communit
y can find this book in the library catalog.\n\nBruni is the Eugene C. Pa
tterson Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Public Policy in the
Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke\, where he has been since 2021 af
ter spending 25 years at The New York Times. He will be in conversation w
ith Brittany Kikani\, Senior Physical Therapist at Duke University Hospit
al and the Chair of DICE. This event is sponsored by Duke University Libr
aries and the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy at Sanford.\n
\nThis event will be presented in-person AND online via Zoom. The Zoom li
nk will be provided to registrants. Please register online to help us est
 imate attendance.\n\nFor any questions\, contact DukeDICE@duke.edu.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Duke SPACE Initiative for a conversation with Washing
ton Post writer\, Christian Davenport about his new book\, Rocket Dreams
(Crown Currency\, on sale September 16)\, a chronicle of the mad scramble
to shape humanity's off-planet future. The author will sit for a book si
gning before the event starting at 5:00 pm. Books will be available for p
urchase.  Seating is limited. Registration is highly encouraged. \n\nhttp
 s://duke.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1LVvlA02nOjv4bk\n\nEvent Description:
\n\nMoon landings and space walks once captivated the public's attention
\, but for past several decades\, the U.S. space enterprise has felt mori
bund. Not anymore. \n\nMusk versus Bezos. China versus the United States.
The government versus the private sector. Welcome to the rivalries and a
lliances defining the New Space Age. At stake? Billions of dollars\, nati
onal prestige\, and a place in the history books. Space has entered a gol
den age\, and this is just the beginning.   \n\nChristian Davenport has d
rawn on years of reporting and interviews with more than a hundred source
s\, including Space X's Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos along with several of hi
s top executives at Blue Origin\, to write the book. Many of Davenport's
sources shared emails\, text messages\, documents\, transcripts of meetin
gs\, and personal journals with him. The result is a gripping account tha
t takes readers behind the scenes at NASA and the Pentagon as China's agg
ressive moon mining plans raise alarms\, onto the sprawling Cape Canavera
l factory where Blue Origin is working toward Amazon-style lunar deliveri
es\, and onto SpaceX launch pads as Musk's engineers log 100-hour weeks-l
eaving veteran astronauts marveling that they're now operating "flying iP
hones."   \n\nWhat will happen as human ambition outpaces governmental re
gulation? Which country will win the race back to the moon? Was Donald Tr
ump's much-derided creation of the Space Force a surprising act of foresi
ght? Will the U.S. finally make a real push to the moon and eventually to
ward Mars?   \n\nAbout the Author: \nChristian Davenport is a staff write
r at The Washington Post covering NASA and the space industry and the aut
hor of The Space Barons. He has been on reporting teams that were finalis
ts for the Pulitzer Prize three times and is a recipient of an Emmy award
for his work on the Discovery and Science Channels covering SpaceX's fir
 st human spaceflight mission.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for French and Francophone Studies at Duke Universi
ty\, in partnership with Columbia University and Villa Albertine\, is del
ighted to welcome Corine Pelluchon (Professor of Philosophy at Université
Gustave Eiffel) and Cyrille Barnérias (Director of International Relatio
ns at the French Biodiversity Office) for a roundtable titled "Mending th
e Living World: Toward a New Enlightenment for the Anthropocene." \n \nTh
is hybrid event will take place on Monday\, January 26th at 5:00 p.m. (Ea
stern). Provided is a link to register for the Zoom call: https://duke.zo
 om.us/meeting/register/_6YTFnYmT9ivixHBJPSoQw#/registration\n \nPelluchon
and Barnérias will be in conversation with Professor Lori Bennear (Stanb
ack Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University) an
d Distinguished Professor of Romance Studies Felwine Sarr. Together\, the
y will reflect on the idea of a "New Enlightenment" for the Anthropocene\
, exploring emerging forms of interdependence among human\, animal\, and
plant life in the face of biodiversity loss.\n \nThe discussion will cons
ider how earlier societies and ecosystems co-adapted to climate pressures
\, and whether a new social contract could foster a more equitable coexis
tence between human and nonhuman worlds. It will also examine how these p
hilosophical and ethical reflections can be translated into public policy
and meaningful forms of public engagement.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Disability Inclusion and Community Empowerment (DICE)
Affinity Group and Duke University Libraries as they welcome Dr. Lee Ska
llerup Bessette\, Assistant Director of Digital Learning at the Center fo
r New Designs in Learning and Scholarship at Georgetown University\, to c
ampus for a public event on her co-edited anthology "Of Many Minds: Neuro
diversity and Mental Health Among University Faculty and Staff" (Johns Ho
pkins University Press\, 2025). She will be in conversation with former c
oworker Leah Tams\, currently Accessioning Archivist in Rubenstein Librar
y Technical Services.\n\nFrom the book jacket: "This essay collection pro
vides a platform for faculty and staff to share their stories and critica
lly examine the culture of mental health in US higher education. Contribu
tions normalize conversations about mental health and neurodiversity whil
e offering insights to transform the academy into a more inclusive\, supp
ortive space. The essays combine personal accounts with actionable critiq
ues\, addressing topics like workplace stigma\, ableism\, and systemic ba
rriers to seeking treatment. With contributions from a diverse group of e
ducators and advocates\, 'Of Many Minds' challenges the status quo and fo
sters empathy for those living with neurodiversity in academia."\n\nThis
hybrid event will take place in the Holsti-Anderson Family Assembly Room
(Rubenstein Library 153) and on Zoom. Human-assisted live captioning thro
ugh Ava will be provided. Accessible parking and building information can

DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the work students have done throughout the y
ear in the What is the Cosmos? Constellation\, we will be hosting an exhi
bition on Friday\, April 17\, 2:00-4:00 in The Holsti-Anderson Family Ass
embly with a reception to follow on the patio outside. Students will be c
ontributing items\, descriptions\, and labels related to our knowledge of
premodern literatures\, observations\, and objects\, and the installatio
n in Perkins will be public until graduation weekend.\n\n\nAcross the fal
l and spring semesters\, these first-year students explored the vast expa
nse we call the cosmos. Through a multidisciplinary approach from classes
  in physics\, history\, energy\, writing\, art history\, and religious st
udies\, students studied the shape of time and the nature of space and as
ked whether the cosmos can be adequality represented and what is the plac
e of the human in contemplating its purpose and harnessing its energies.
\n\nPlease join us as we reflect critically upon what has been imagined a
bout worlds\, the world\, and our connection to it all.
