DESCRIPTION:This talk proposes a fundamentally new interpretation of Brita
in's fossil energy transition during the "Industrial Revolution" from the
late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries. Professor Albritton Jon
sson will discuss how canal infrastructure\, the deep mine\, and the iron
industry specifically provided the material basis for this transformatio
 n. He will also show the role canal legislation in particular played in p
rioritizing coal as the driver of urban growth\, and how the economic and
military priorities of providing national self-sufficiency in energy pro
tected and won a privileged status for the iron and coal industry. Finall
y\, "Before Big Oil" will explore the ways in which the new science of ge
ology produced an evangelical cosmology of coal and promoted a cornucopia
n understanding of the mineral endowment.\n\nLunch will be provided.\n\nF
redrik Albritton Jonsson is Associate Professor of History and of Concept
ual and Historical Studies in Science at the University of Chicago. He is
the author of Enlightenment's Frontier: The Scottish Highlands and the O
rigins of Environmentalism and\, with Vicky Albritton\, Green Victorians:
The Simple Life in John Ruskin's Lake District.\n\nThis event is part of
the Energy Research Seminar Series sponsored by the Nicholas Institute f
or Energy\, Environment & Sustainability at Duke University. Subscribe to

DESCRIPTION:Theories of causation within the causal modeling framework are
among the most promising and well-developed approaches to analyzing actu
al causation today. This article addresses the problem of model relativit
y\, arguably the most pressing challenge for these theories. When a case
admits of different models that issue different causal conclusions\, such
analyses seem only able to deliver model-relative verdicts about causati
on. This article presents a new way of understanding what drives model re
lativity that shows not only why a large class of extant approaches to ad
dressing it fail but furthermore\, why they are not even of the right for
m to be a solution. Along the way\, I draw broader lessons about what an
adequate response to relativity must be like. I then take a step towards
such an account by outlining a substantive constraint on when variables a
nd paths in a causal model must not be drawn and when they may.\n\n \n\nH
u's current projects broadly concern causal theorizing about the social w
orld\, with a particular focus on causal inference methodologies in the s
ocial sciences\, how these various statistical frameworks treat and measu
re the "causal effect" of social categories such as race\, and ultimately
\, how such methods are seen to back normative claims about racial discri
mination and inequalities broadly. Previously\, she worked on topics in m
achine learning theory and algorithmic fairness.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the fundamentals of survey design.
The emphasis will be on providing practical survey design tips to those l
ooking to develop their own surveys\, or to evaluate proposals for survey
s to be conducted by vendors. Topics explored in the workshop include det
ermining if a survey is the appropriate design\, considering the trade-of
fs to data quality that arise in the survey design process\, identifying
sources of error when sampling and surveying respondents\, and more. Lunc
 h provided.
