DESCRIPTION:Title: Hypothesizing Upward: U.S. States Contexts and Inequali
ties in Life Expectancy \nABSTRACT: In the United States\, life expectanc
y is increasingly being shaped by where we live and how much schooling we
have completed. Why? Most speculation has focused on "micro-level" expla
nations\, such as individuals' personal choices and lifestyle behaviors.
This presentation will discuss the importance of macro-level explanations
\, particularly U.S. state policies. Weaving together results from severa
l recent and ongoing studies\, this presentation will build the case that
the diverging policy contexts of U.S. states-resulting from decades of d
eregulation\, devolution of political authority from federal to state lev
els\, and state preemption laws-have likely played a critical role in the
  widening inequalities in life expectancy.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop provides an overview of ways Excel can be used
to structure and even analyze data and to create presentations. It starts
with examining basic tools and functions in Excel (including ways that E
xcel can be used to manage textual data\, to combine or divide data cells
and sources\, and to perform calculations such as sum\, average\, minimu
m\, and maximum). It then proceeds to an overview of how to sort and tran
spose data and create graphs and tables. Finally\, it reviews how to perf
 orm basic statistical operations\, including counts\, frequencies\, and e
ven simple linear regressions\, in Excel. Registration required\; please

DESCRIPTION:Qualitative Data Collection & Management-This workshop provide
s an introduction to a range of qualitative research methods as well as a
n overview of the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Qualitative
 research methods\, including in-depth interviews\, focus groups\, archiva
l analysis\, and participant observation\, vary considerably in the resou
rces and time required to execute them reliably\, and in the types of dat
a they generate. Which data collection techniques are appropriate to whic
h kinds of research questions and projects\, and how do you execute these
methods well? How are issues of reliability and validity considered and
weighed in qualitative research? We will also explore different ways of
managing your data prior to commencing data collection in order to facili
tate the transition to data analysis. Some time will be given to the role
of NVivo software in facilitating data management and preparing for data
  analysis. Registration required\; please click <a href="https://tinyurl.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Beyond the End of Hypergamy: Increase in Educational Hy
pogamy in India \nABSTRACT: With rising education among women across the
world\, educational hypergamy (women marrying men with higher education)
has decreased over the last few decades in both developed and developing
countries. While a decrease in hypergamy is often accompanied by increasi
ng homogamy (women marrying men with equal levels of education)\, our ana
lyses for India\, based on the India Human Development Survey\, a nationa
lly representative survey\, document a surprising rise in hypogamy (women
marrying partners with lower education) during the past four decades. Lo
g-linear analyses further reveal that declining hypergamy is largely gene
rated by the rise in education levels while hypogamous marriages continue
to increase even after marginal distribution is taken into account. Furt
her multivariate analyses show that highly educated women tend to marry m
en with lower education but from more privileged families. Moreover\, wom
en with non-elite college education (measured as majoring in humanities a
nd social sciences) are increasingly more likely to be involved in hypoga
mous marriages. We argue that the rise in hypogamous marriage by educatio
n paradoxically reflects deep-rooted gender scripts in India\, as other s
alient social boundaries such as caste\, religion\, and family socioecono
mic status\, are much more difficult to cross.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Gendered Language Abstract: Languages use different sys
tems for classifying nouns. Gender languages assign many\n- sometimes all
  - nouns to distinct sex-based categories\, masculine and feminine. At th
e cross-country level\, we document a robust negative relationship betwee
n prevalence of gender languages and women's labor force participation. I
n countries in Sub-Saharan Africa where indigenous languages vary in term
s of their gender structure\, as well as within India\, we show that educ
ational attainment and female labor force participation are lower among t
hose whose native languages are gender languages. Our cross-country\ndata
also permit a novel permutation test\, demonstrating that the patterns w
e find are robust to statistical correction for the clustered nature of v
ariation in linguistic structures within hierarchical language families.

DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Grandparents\, Moms or Dads? Why Children of Teen Moth
ers Do Worse in Life\n\nJoint with Paul Devereaux and Kjell Salvanes\n \n
ABSTRACT: Women who give birth as teens have worse subsequent educational
and labor market outcomes than women who have first births at older ages
. However\, previous research has attributed much of these effects to sel
ection rather than a causal effect of teen childbearing. Despite this\, t
here are still reasons to believe that children of teen mothers may do wo
rse as their mothers may be less mature\, have fewer financial resources
when the child is young\, and may partner with fathers of lower quality.
Using Norwegian register data\, we compare outcomes of children of sister
s who have first births at different ages. Our evidence suggests that the
causal effect of being a child of a teen mother is much smaller than tha
t implied by the cross-sectional differences but that there are still sig
nificant long-term\, adverse consequences\, especially for children born
to the youngest teen mothers. Unlike previous research\, we have informat
ion on fathers and find that negative selection of fathers of children bo
rn to teen mothers plays an important role in producing inferior child ou
tcomes. These effects are particularly large for mothers from higher soci
 o-economic groups.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop offers an introduction to Qualtrics survey soft
ware\, a package available (at no cost to researchers) for use across Duk
e's campus and medical center. This powerful\, easy-to-use system is a gr
eat way to collect information online\, whether as part of a research pro
tocol or for administrative purposes such as program evaluation. This wor
kshop will introduce participants to the Qualtrics system\, demonstrate h
ow to set up an account\, create a questionnaire and access its results.
It will also cover some basic tools that can be used to customize the que
stionnaire to fit your needs\, such as using display and skip logic to co
llect more detailed information from a subset of your audience. The works
hop is taught through the Duke Initiative on Survey Methodology (DISM) in
collaboration with the Duke Office of Information Technology (OIT). Part
icipants will receive a very brief overview of the consulting and other s
ervices DISM offers to help Duke researchers develop and conduct surveys.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Evolution of Intergenerational Transfers\nAbstract: Du
ring graduate school\, I made a detailed documentation of intergeneration
al transfers among forager-horticulturalists living in Bolivian Amazonia.
The networks of investment that I observed spurred me to develop an evol
utionary model of intergenerational transfers based on inclusive fitness
and relative benefits (need) and costs. The model turned out to work rema
rkably well in predicting transfers within and between families. I'll dis
cuss how this model is more broadly relevant for understanding the evolut
ion of human life histories\, including longevity\, length of dependence\
 , age-schedule of fertility\, and demographic transitions.
