DESCRIPTION:This Career Series event will feature young alumni Victoria Pr
 ince\, PPS`18\, and Lucy Wooldridge\, PPS`18.\n\nVictoria Prince is a res
earch associate for the Economic Opportunities Program's Workforce Strate
gies Initiative. She is interested in public impact research related to i
ncreasing economic stability and mobility\, particularly among youth and
disadvantaged communities. In addition to work on education policy and ch
arter school networks\, her prior research experience includes studying h
ow employee benefits\, occupational licensing requirements\, caregiving r
esponsibilities\, and community college programs may impact economic stab
ility and mobility. After attaining a BA in Public Policy from Duke Unive
rsity in 2018\, she taught eighth grade for two years as a Teach for Amer
ica corps member. She is currently pursuing an MA in theology at the Univ
ersity of St. Thomas in her hometown of Houston\, Texas. \n\nLucy Wooldri
dge\, PPS`18\, is currently living in the Bay Area pursuing her MBA and M
aster's of Public Health concurrently in a dual degree program at UC Berk
eley's School of Public Health and the Haas School of Business. Prior to
graduate school\, Wooldridge worked at American Institutes for Research a
s an analyst and project manager for health program improvement projects.
She specialized in reproductive and maternal health projects\, including
efforts to expand abortion access\, improve postpartum maternal home vis
iting programs\, and understand policy impacts on racial disparities in m
aternal mortality rates. Her interest in maternal health started at Duke\
, where she majored in public policy\, minored in gender sexuality and fe
minist studies\, and was a work study student at the Center for Child and
Family Policy.\n\nThis speaker series is for Duke students who want to l
earn more about careers in child and family policy. Meetings are designed
to help students explore the wide range of job opportunities and careers
available in the field of child and family policy while creating a netwo
rk of students who share their professional interests.

DESCRIPTION:It is well understood that\, if a person comes to see a situat
ion as dangerous\, that person will interpret information differently\, b
ehave differently\, make different choices\, and change physiologically.
But what if a person sees the whole world as\, essentially\, one big dang
erous place? \n\nThough it's a truism that everyone sees the world differ
ently\, people's most basic world beliefs-sometimes referred to as primal
world beliefs-were only recently mapped empirically. This involved\, for
example\, analyzing thousands of tweets and hundreds of historical texts
to identify all primal world beliefs subjects could hold\, then analyzin
g data from a few thousand subjects to determine statistically what belie
fs subjects actually hold. This revealed 26 dimensions-many new to psycho
logists-with most clustering into the beliefs that the world is Safe (vs.
dangerous)\, Enticing (vs. dull)\, and Alive (vs. mechanistic). Now\, ov
er 40 psychology labs worldwide are exploring the origins and diverse pot
ential implications of primal world beliefs. \nAfter introducing the rese
arch space\, Dr. Jeremy Clifton will discuss some of the more surprising
recent findings about connections to wellbeing\, privilege\, parenting\,
and politics.\n\nClifton is a senior research scientist at the Penn Posit
ive Psychology Center and director of the Primals Project. Last year his
research was featured in Forbes\, The Atlantic\, Fox News\, Elle\, and Ps
 ychology Today.\n\nVisit the <a href="https://childandfamilypolicy.duke.e
 du/event/what-sort-of-world-is-this-introduction-to-emerging-psychologica
 l-research-on-primal-world-beliefs/">CCFP website</a> for a link to the P
rimals Inventory to learn about your primal world beliefs and get a perso
nalized report comparing your beliefs to a national average.
