Psycholo gists treating the complex post-traumatic effects face a unique challenge due to the unprecedented nature of the war trauma. However\, despite the significant symptoms of acute stress\, Ukrainians exhibit remarkable res ilience in coping with the trauma. Dr. Prokhovnik-Raphique will explore t hese coping mechanisms and discuss ways in which volunteers and supporter s can aid in the recovery process.\n\nDr. Alla Prokhovnik-Raphique is a c linical psychologist specializing in the treatment of trauma and addictiv e disorders in her private practice\, Nurturing Roots Psychology. One understudied dimension is its impact on the nex t generation. We use linked administrative data from the Canadian provinc e of British Columbia (where opioid death rates exceed the U.S. national average) that links birth records since 2000 to health\, education\, well -being\, and mortality for both the mother and the child. We have three m ain findings. First\, the number of newborns exposed to opioids in utero (obtained from data linking newborn and mother medical records) is many t imes larger than commonly reported statistics which rely on diagnoses of neonatal abstinence syndrome. Second\, exposure to in-utero opioids is as sociated with large and persistent adverse child health\, human capital\, and well-being outcomes\; these associations are above and beyond what i s predicted by the mother's socioeconomic status and the newborn's health . Finally\, two different quasi-experiments provide suggestive evidence t hat causal estimates are qualitatively similar but noisy.\n\nJonathan Zhang is an assistant professor at Sanford School of Public Policy an d faculty research fellow at National Bureau of Economic Research. He is affiliated with the U.S. Veterans Affairs Office of Mental Health and Sui cide Prevention. Previously\, he was on the faculty at McMaster Universit y and a postdoctoral scholar at Princeton University. He received his Ph. D. in economics from Stanford University and his BSc from the University of British Columbia.\n\nZhang's research spans health economics and publi c finance. He studies the impacts of physician behavior\, health policies \, and safety net programs on well-being.
