DESCRIPTION:The Sanford School of Public Policy and the Center for Child a
nd Family Policy invite you to attend a reception celebrating the launch
of Family Connects International. This event will celebrate the individua
ls who have been instrumental in the research\, implementation\, and mana
gement of this successful nurse home visiting program which began with a
single site in Durham in 2008 and now has become a nonprofit. \n\nThe Fam
ily Connects model was established in Durham in 2008 through a partnershi
p with the Duke University Center for Child and Family Policy\, the Cente
r for Child & Family Health\, and the Durham County Health Department. It
was designed to support whole-person\, integrated health for all familie
s of newborns. FCI nurses visit families at their home to assess newborns
\, mothers\, and other household family members to discuss concrete next
steps to address opportunities and concerns\, including seeking immediate
medical care when necessary. The model is in various stages of exploring
\, planning\, implementation\, and certification in communities across 18
states\, where it aims to connect with at least 80 percent of the newbor
n families. \n\nAccording to Executive Director Sherika Hill\, "FCI is un
ique from other nurse-home visiting programs for newborns\, including tho
se that are universal\, because we are willing to tailor our evidence-bas
ed program\, implementation guidance\, and policy support to the differen
t contexts of our community partners. In doing so\, we hope to have a big
ger impact for families of newborns as we scale with quality assurance an
d community accountability."

DESCRIPTION:Disengagement among middle school students is a well-documente
d and widespread problem. The transition to middle school often results i
n decreased attendance and increased chronic absenteeism and suspensions.
Disengagement in middle school has longer-term consequences\, including
increased high school dropout and delinquency\, and substance abuse in la
ter adolescence and early adulthood. An underexplored explanation for dis
engagement is that students typically travel longer distances to attend m
iddle school than elementary school. As distance to school increases\, mi
ddle school students are more likely to rely on school buses or public tr
ansit to get to school\, which may promote-or deter-engagement. On one ha
nd\, the school bus or free public transportation may increase engagement
by reducing travel time\, easing travel logistics and facilitating parti
cipation in after-school activities. Alternatively\, transportation could
reduce engagement if commutes are stressful or tiring or fraught with bu
llying or teasing. Whether-or to what extent-distance and transportation
shape the engagement of middle school students are empirical questions wh
ich Dr. Schwartz and her colleagues aim to answer.\n\nAmy Ellen Schwartz
is dean of the Joseph R. Biden\, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administ
ration at the University of Delaware. Previously\, she was the Daniel Pat
rick Moynihan Chair in Public Affairs at the Maxwell School of Citizenshi
p and Public Affairs at Syracuse University where she was professor and c
hair of economics and professor of public administration and internationa
l affairs. \n\nShe is co-PI and director of transportation research for t
he IES-funded National Center for Research on Education Access and Choice
. She serves on various editorial boards\, including Regional Science and
Urban Economics\, PLOS-One\, and Education Finance and Policy and was th
e editor of Education Finance and Policy from 2014-2019. She received he
r Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University.\n\nThe Early Childhood Ini
tiative seeks to bring together scholars to address early childhood chall
enges and produce world-class scholarship that will help maximize the pot
ential of all children during their early years. \n\nPlease join us for a
reception after her talk.

DESCRIPTION:Emily Donovan\, co-founder of Clean Cape Fear\, shares insight
s on the five year battle residents in Southeastern North Carolina have w
aged to stop PFAS contamination in their air\, soil\, water\, and food su
pply coming from the Chemours Fayetteville Works facility. Learn how her
grassroots community group affects change by demanding a seat at the tabl

of Clean Cape Fear\, Donovan has testified before Congress twice and sh
ared the stage with lawyer Rob Bilott\, and actor/producer Mark Ruffalo\,
during a Washington Post Live panel discussion on the movie Dark Waters.
She co-hosted two screenings of the movie Dark Waters in Wilmington and
Raleigh\, which featured guest speaker Mark Ruffalo and resulted in North
Carolina's Attorney General filing a lawsuit against DuPont and Chemours
for natural resource damages and led to a historic amount of PFAS bills
filed in the NC General Assembly in 2020. Her organization secured RO fi
lling stations in 49 impacted public schools in New Hanover and Brunswick
counties. Most recently\, Donovan helped organize the 3rd National PFAS
Conference in Wilmington\, NC where the U.S. EPA announced new health adv
isories for PFAS. She also participated in a CBS Sunday Morning feature s
tory on forever chemicals in the United States. Her work has helped eleva
te community concerns regarding PFAS contamination to the state and feder
al level. She serves on numerous advisory boards and is a leadership team
member for the National PFAS Contamination Coalition.

DESCRIPTION:Phyllis Pomerantz\, professor emerita of the practice of publi
c policy\, and Edmund Malesky\, director of the Duke Center for Internati

DESCRIPTION:*Hybrid Event* A fundamental motivation in human development i
s wanting to feel recognized\, appreciated\, and capable of actions that
benefit others. These motivations begin in childhood but are amplified in
adolescence. This motivation (to 'matter' and to feel that one's actions
matter to others) can exert a strong influence on behavior as young adol
escents explore and learn how to navigate increasingly complex and uncert
ain social environments. This creates a formative period of social learni
ng that can shape identity development. Understanding this sensitive peri
od of learning has implications for early intervention strategies to impa
ct trajectories of behavioral and emotional health and social development
.\n\nRonald E. Dahl is the director of the Institute of Human Development
at the University of California\, Berkeley\, where he also serves as a p
rofessor in the School of Public Health and the Joint Medical Program and
runs the Adolescent Research Collaborative. He is the founding director
of the Center for the Developing Adolescent\, where he provides the strat
egic vision for the Center's research agenda. He is a pediatrician and de
velopmental scientist with long-standing research interests in the develo
pment of sleep/arousal regulation\, affect regulation\, and the developme
nt of behavioral and emotional disorders in children and adolescents. \n\
nHis research is interdisciplinary and bridges basic developmental resear
ch (emphasizing social and affective neuroscience) and the translation of
this work into clinical and social policy relevance. He has published ex
tensively on child and adolescent development\, sleep disorders\, behavio
ral/emotional health in children\, adolescent brain development and the p
olicy implications of this work. He has been elected as a fellow of sever
al organizations\, including the Association for Psychological Science\,
American Academy of Pediatrics\, New York Academy of Sciences\, and the A
merican Academy of Sleep Medicine. He is also a founding editor of the jo
urnal Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience and is past president of the S
ociety for Research in Child Development.\n\nThis lecture is made possibl
e through an endowment from the Arthur Sulzberger Family. Please join us
for a reception immediately following the talk.\n\nVisitor parking is ava
ilable at the Science Drive visitor's lot\, a short walk from the Sanford
School. The rate is $2 per hour.
