DESCRIPTION:Jason DeParle T'82\, P'22\, reporter for The New York Times an
d author of the new book "A Good Provider is One Who Leaves: One Family a
nd Migration in the 21st Century\," will give The Crown Lecture in Ethics
  at Duke University on Monday\, Nov. 11\, 2019 at 6 p.m. \n\nProf. Philip
Bennett of the Sanford School of Public Policy and DeWitt Wallace Center
for Media and Democracy will interview him in a fireside chat-style disc
ussion. The talk is free and open to the public\, and seating is limited.
Free parking in the Public Policy lot. \n\nDeParle has written extensive
ly about poverty and immigration. His recent book follows an extended fam
ily of Filipino immigrants from the slums of Manila to the suburbs of Hou
ston and tells the larger story of global migration. He argues that the p
olitics of immigration are broken\, but that immigration itself remains a
n under-appreciated American success. He also recently had a long-form pr
ofile on Duke alumnus Stephen Miller in The New York Times. DeParle is a
recipient of the George Polk Award and is a two-time finalist for the Pul
itzer Prize. \n\nThe lecture will be streamed on the Sanford School's Fa
 cebook and YouTube pages.

DESCRIPTION:Please join Professor Peter Feaver in a discussion with Former
Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee\, Jane Harman\, on he
r book Insanity Defense: Why Our Failure to Confront Hard National Securi
ty Problems Makes Us Less Safe.\n\nAs a nation\, America has cycled throu
gh the same defense and intelligence issues since the end of the Cold War
. In Insanity Defense\, Congresswoman Jane Harman chronicles how four adm
inistrations have failed to confront some of the toughest national securi
ty policy issues and suggests achievable fixes that can move us toward a
safer future.\n\nIf unable to attend in person\, join us via the Webinar
 livestream: https://duke.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_HeBtjuSMQRujEq6-aOYO
 6A\n\nCongresswoman Harman was there-as witness\, legislator\, exhorter\,
enabler\, dissident and\, eventually\, outside advisor and commentator.
Insanity Defense is an insider's account of decades of American national
security-of its failure of its failures and omissions-and a roadmap to ma
king significant progress on solving these perennially difficult issues.\
n\nJane Harman\, Distinguished Fellow and President Emerita\, Wilson Cent
er\, is an internationally recognized authority on U.S. and global securi
ty issues\, foreign relations and lawmaking. A native of Los Angeles and
a public-school graduate\, she went on to become a nine-term member of Co
ngress\, serving decades on the major security committees in the House of
Representatives. Drawing upon a career that has included service as Pres
ident Carter's Secretary of the Cabinet and hundreds of diplomatic missio
ns to foreign countries\, Harman holds posts on nearly a dozen government
al and non-governmental advisory boards and commissions.

DESCRIPTION:During this Sulzberger Distinguished Lecture\, Dr. Dudley Floo
d\, former educator and champion of school integration\, will share his p
ersonal insights on the long road to school desegregation in North Caroli
na\, today's challenges and opportunities\, and the future of N.C. public
schools as resegregation increases.\n\nDr. Keisha Bentley-Edwards\, asso
ciate professor and associate director of research at the Samuel DuBois C
ook Center on Social Equity\, will facilitate the discussion.\n\nIn 1969\
, many schools in the South were still segregated\, although more than 15
years had passed since the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Some sc
hool districts actively blocked desegregation while the N.C. legislature
authorized tuition grants to white private schools\, which became known a
s "segregation academies." Dr. Flood joined the N.C. Department of Public
Instruction in 1970\, tasked with helping communities desegregate school
s by meeting with elected officials\, community activists\, and parents.
His work in Hyde County\, where Black parents had been boycotting the sch
ools for nearly a year in protest of a plan that would have closed two hi
storically Black schools\, is illustrative of the challenges he faced and
his successful collaborative strategy for change.\n\nDr. Flood has recei
ved more than 350 awards for civic service. He has been presented the Ord
er of the Longleaf Pine Award (North Carolina's highest civic award) by t
hree different Governors: Governor James G. Martin\; Governor James B. Hu
nt\, Jr.\; and Governor Mike Easley. He also received the Outstanding Alu
mni Award from both North Carolina Central University and East Carolina U
niversity.\n \nHe served for 12 years on the Board of Governors of the Un
iversity of North Carolina. He currently serves on the N.C. Minority Canc
er Awareness Action Team\, the Public School Forum of North Carolina Boar
d\, the Wake Education Partnership Leadership Council\, the UNC Press Adv
ancement Council\, and on several other boards and committees. The Dudley
Flood Center for Educational Equity & Opportunity is named in his honor.
\n\nDr. Flood earned a bachelor's degree from North Carolina Central Univ
ersity\, a master's degree in educational administration from East Caroli
na University and a doctorate degree in the same field from Duke Universi
ty.\n\nThis lecture is made possible through an endowment from the Arthur
Sulzberger Family. Please join us for a reception immediately following
 the talk.

DESCRIPTION:Black Mobility: What does it mean to shape black community?\n\
nThis conference is put on by Policy in Living Color as an opportunity fo
r diverse minds to come together to share their insights on today's most
pertinent policy issues. Our intention for creating Duke Sanford's Black
Policy Conference is to create a space for students of color to see polic
y in living color. For us to be able to envision ourselves in policy area
s that do not commonly represent us and to know if one person can make it
\, we all can make it. Our hope for our time together is to foster commun
ity across policy disciplines\, provide a space for robust dialogue and d
iscourse\, and provide an opportunity to network with future colleagues a
 nd mentors.
