DESCRIPTION:Every organization-whether for-profit or nonprofit\, commercia
l or social enterprise-has a business model that describes how the organi
zation creates\, delivers\, and captures value. In many cases\, social en
trepreneurs are most creative and add the greatest value in the design of
their business model-they have a wide range of options for structuring t
 heir ventures\, acquiring capital\, \npricing their services\, paying the
ir workers\, and coming to terms with suppliers. Regardless of how effect
ive an innovation is at achieving social impact\, a social venture's busi
ness model must be "sustainable" over the period of time required to achi
eve widespread\, lasting impact. In this session\, we will explore the fu
ndamentals of social venture business models\, consider alternative model
s for social value creation\, and apply tools for documenting and refinin
g business models to promote greater viability\, scalability\, and impact
 .

DESCRIPTION:In a series of momentary and daily diary studies conducted wit
h adolescents in naturalistic settings\, Emma Adam has examined how every
day social experiences affect stress-sensitive aspects of adolescent biol
ogical functioning\, including stress hormone (cortisol) levels and sleep
hours and quality. \n\nAn applied developmental psychobiologist\, Adam
has been with Northwestern's School of Education and Social Policy since
2000. She studies how everyday life experiences in home\, school\, and wo
rk settings influence levels of perceived and biological stress in childr
en\, adolescents\, and young adults. Her work traces the pathways by whic
h stress "gets under the skin" to contribute to youth outcomes. By using
noninvasive methods such as measurement of the stress-sensitive hormone c
ortisol\, and measurement of sleep hours and quality\, she is identifying
the key factors that cause biological stress in children and adolescents
\, and the implications of biological stress for daily functioning and fo
r disparities in emotional and physical health\, cognition\, and academic
outcomes. \n\nAdam received her Ph.D. in child psychology from the Univ
ersity of Minnesota and an MA in public policy from the University of Chi
 cago.

DESCRIPTION:In this illuminating and comprehensive account\, Talbot C. Iml
ay chronicles the life of Clarence Streit and his Atlantic federal union
movement in the Unites States during and following the Second World War.
The first book to detail Streit's life\, work and significance\, it revea
ls the importance of public political cultures in shaping US foreign rela
tions. In 1939\, Streit published Union Now which proposed a federation o
f the North Atlantic democracies modelled on the US Constitution. The buz
z created led Streit to leave his position at The New York Times and devo
te himself to promoting the union. Over the next quarter of a century\, S
treit worked to promote a new public political culture\, employing a vari
ety of strategies to gain visibility and political legitimacy for his pro
ject and for federalist frameworks. In doing so\, Streit helped shape war
time debates on the nature of the post-war international order and of tra
nsatlantic relations.\n\nTalbot C. Imlay is professor of historical scien
 ces at Université Laval.
