DESCRIPTION:Internal migration in developing countries has far greater mag
nitude than international migration\, and poses both great opportunities
and great challenges. Cases from Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America reveal
the dilemmas that governments face in addressing migrations that are tri
ggered by economic opportunities\, climate change disruptions\, political
motives\, and conflict. The session will focus on the dilemmas that gove
rnments face\, and some of the strategies to confront them. Adopting the
strategies depends on whether government officials choose to embrace or e
vade accountability in managing these migrations.\n\nWilliam Ascher is th
e Donald C. McKenna Professor at Claremont McKenna College. He previously
was the founding director of the Duke Center for International Developme
nt. He studies economic development and public policy in developing count
ries\, natural resource and environmental policy\, strategic planning and
decision making\, political psychology\, and international policymaking
processes. Most of his applied research focuses on Latin America\, Southe
 ast Asia\, and South Asia.

DESCRIPTION:The Prenatal-to-3 Policy Impact Center empowers states with ri
gorous evidence to implement effective and equitable policies that ensure
all children thrive from the start. Grounded in the science of the devel
oping child and based on the most rigorous evidence available\, the Prena
tal-to-3 State Policy Roadmap details the most effective state actions th
at foster the nurturing environments infants and toddlers need\, and that
reduce longstanding racial\, ethnic\, and socioeconomic disparities in a
ccess and outcomes. When combined\, the policies and strategies included
in the Roadmap create a system of care that provides broad-based economic
and family supports\, as well as targeted interventions to address ident
ified needs. Dr. Osborne will cover the foundation of the Center's work i
n rigorous research\, what we know about effective state-level policies i
n the PN-3 space\, and how these policies matter for families.\n\nCynthia
Osborne is a Professor of Early Childhood Education and Policy in the De
partment of Leadership\, Policy\, and Organizations at Vanderbilt Univers
ity's Peabody College. She is the founder and executive director of the n
ational Prenatal-to-3 Policy Impact Center\, an academic research center
that translates the science of the developing child into state level poli
cies with the strongest evidence base of effectiveness. Osborne is a 2023
Aspen Institute Ascend Fellow and has also co-authored reports for the N
ational Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine Committee on B
uilding an Agenda to Reduce the Number of Children in Poverty by Half in
10 Years and Exploring the Opportunity Gap for Young Children from Birth
to Age Eight. Osborne holds a Ph.D. in demography and public affairs from
Princeton University\, a Master in Public Policy degree from Harvard Uni
versity's Kennedy School of Government\, and a Master of Arts in educatio
n from Claremont Graduate University.\n\nThe Early Childhood Initiative s
eeks to bring together scholars to address early childhood challenges and
produce world-class scholarship that will help maximize the potential of
all children during their early years.

DESCRIPTION:What will life beyond Earth look and feel like for the first c
osmic explorers? \n\nJoin the Duke SPACE Initiative for a networking lunc
h & seminar with analog astronaut and photographer\, Cassandra Klos ('20)
 .\n\nAn analog astronaut can be anyone -- an artist\, a researcher\, an e
ngineer\, an historian\, or a scientist who plays the role of a space tra
veler during a simulated space mission on Earth. \n\nThey live and work i
n isolated habitats or extreme environments-such as deserts\, the ocean f
 loor\, polar regions\, caves\, or specialized indoor facilities-that mimi
 c the conditions of space\, the Moon\, or Mars.\n\nLunch begins at 11:30
AM. Talk begins at 12 PM.\n\nThis seminar is being organized by the Duke
SPACE Initiative in collaboration with the Duke Center for Documentary St
udies\, Duke University's MFA|EDA program with support from Duke's Office
of Interdisciplinary Programs.\n\nKlos will be in residency at the Duke
Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) from October 19th-24th. Her exhibiti
on\, opening on October 22nd\, will be on display at CDS from October 22n
d to January 4th. \n\nThe exhibition will feature images from her long-te
rm project "Mars on Earth\," and will also include artifacts and ephemera
from her fieldwork\, including spacesuits and other mission materials\,
as well as work originally produced for National Geographic that will be
exhibited together in the CDS Kreps Gallery for the first time. \n\nThe i
mmersive exhibition blurs the boundaries between documentary evidence and
speculative imagination\, inviting viewers into a future that is already
  being rehearsed.

DESCRIPTION:Katherine Magnuson\nPh.D.\, Human Development and Social Polic
y\, Northwestern University\, 2002\;\nB.A.\, History and Political Scienc
 e\, Brown University\, 1995\nKatherine's research focuses on the well-bei
ng and development of economically disadvantaged children and their famil
ies. She examines how disparities in socioeconomic status (SES) affect ch
ildren's development\, and how these effects may be altered by policies a
nd programs\, especially early childhood education programs. She also inv
estigates how maternal education impacts child development.\nSpecifically
\, Katherine blends two streams of research that are often considered sep
arately: (1) research on the influence of parents' employment\, income\,
and education\, as well as welfare policies\, on children's well-being\,
with a special emphasis on the extent to which differences in SES across
racial and ethnic groups explain disparities in children's school perform
ance\; and (2) research on direct child interventions\, particularly earl
y education\, that may serve a compensatory role for disadvantaged childr
en. The first body of literature illuminates the scope of possible benefi
ts that may accrue to children from interventions that directly improve t
he well-being of their parents\, while the second line of research provid
es insights regarding how directing services and resources to children\,
rather than to their parents\, may buffer the harmful effects of being ra
 ised in a disadvantaged family.
