DESCRIPTION:Ecosomatics draws on our felt senses and the power of the imag

is workshop led by Bex Patterson Markowitz\, somatic experiencing practit
ioner and human geographer\, will engage your senses with a series of pro

en up your perception in new and surprising ways in interaction with plan
ts and other life. You will be guided to think and feel beyond the limits
of your own bodily boundaries and consider the ways that we are in inter
action and relationship with other living beings around us. In this sessi
on we will explore the questions: What can ecological systems and organis
ms teach us about opening up to life as it is happening and unfolding in
the present? What can plants and other non-human beings teach us about ac
knowledging and accepting that being alive and allowing life to flourish
requires deep listening and attunement to the needs\, preferences\, and d
ynamic relationships that exist between us all? Wear comfortable clothing
\, bring a notebook and expect to do a little wandering! For ages 15 and
up. Participants under 18 must attend with an adult or request a waiver.

DESCRIPTION:This program is designed as an affinity space for BIPOC partic

ime\, or you are an experienced birder\, join Naturally Wild LLC to meet
the birds that call Duke Gardens home. Led by bird guide Deja Perkins\, p
articipants will learn how to identify various birds\, help contribute to
the NC Bird Atlas and learn how to monitor birds in their own neighborho
ods using Merlin and eBird. This program is offered every first Saturday
from September through November\, on Sept. 7\, Oct. 5 and Nov 2. A limite
d number of sanitized binoculars will be available for use\; participants
are also welcome to bring their own. \nWhy is this program for a specifi

with and experience our surroundings is influenced by our identities and
lived experiences. This program intends to increase access to birding and

bias\, exclusion and other challenges to a sense of belonging in these sp

DESCRIPTION:Led by award-winning haiku poet\, Crystal Simone Smith \nThe p

DESCRIPTION:Ecosomatics draws on our felt senses and the power of the imag

is workshop led by Bex Patterson Markowitz\, somatic experiencing practit
ioner and human geographer\, will engage your senses with a series of pro
mpts\, reflective exercises\, and movement practices to explore how to op
en up your perception in new and surprising ways in interaction with plan
ts and other life. You will be guided to think and feel beyond the limits
of your own bodily boundaries and consider the ways that we are in inter
action and relationship with other living beings around us. In this sessi
on\, we will consider our own relationships to failure and how relationsh
ips of accountability to the non-human world might be cultivated through
responsive listening and failure. We will take inspiration from some of t
he history of Duke Gardens itself. Wear comfortable clothing\, bring a no
tebook and expect to do a little wandering! For ages 15 and up. Participa
nts under 18 must attend with an adult or request a waiver. Look for add

DESCRIPTION:This program is designed as an affinity space for BIPOC partic
ipants with any level of birding experience. Whether this is your first t
ime\, or you are an experienced birder\, join Naturally Wild LLC to meet
the birds that call Duke Gardens home.

This program intends to increase access to birding and

bias\, exclusion and other challenges to a sense of belonging in these sp
aces. Look for additional birding programs offered for all identities on

DESCRIPTION:With Brittaney Whitenhill of Our-Backyard.org\nParticipants wi
ll confirm the relationship they hold with plants that brings life to min
d\, body\, and soul. This workshop will provide the opportunity to explor
e the benefits of garden herbs commonly used in the kitchen and reflect o
n the intuitive wisdom gained from interacting with them. This program is
designed specifically for BIPOC adults (18+ years old). Participants wil
 l receive a garden kit that includes herbs\, soil\, one planter\, seeds\,
journal and herbal guide to take home.\nWhy is this program for a specif
ic audience?\nWhen we offer programming to distinct affinity groups\, it'
s not meant to segregate (an action that holds harmful paradigms and acti
ons). Instead\, we offer space for specific communities to heal and affir
m their distinct lived experiences. We aim to celebrate diverse cultural
identities for historically marginalized communities by providing opport
 unities for healing\, community\, encouragement and support. \nFee: $38\;
20% discount for Duke Gardens members with discount code. Parking fees a
pply.\nLocation: meet at the front desk of the Doris Duke Center for dire
ctions to the class location. \nAccessibility: This will be a small group
program that takes place seated outdoors in a location that requires tra

DESCRIPTION:This program is designed as an affinity space for BIPOC partic
ipants with any level of birding experience. Whether this is your first t
ime\, or you are an experienced birder\, join Naturally Wild LLC to meet
the birds that call Duke Gardens home.
\nWhy is this program for a specifi
c audience?\nThe outdoors is for everyone\, but the way we each interact
with and experience our surroundings is influenced by our identities and
lived experiences. This program intends to increase access to birding and
outdoor spaces for marginalized identities that have historically faced
bias\, exclusion and other challenges to a sense of belonging in these sp
aces. Look for additional birding programs offered for all identities on
Sept. 27\, Oct. 12 and Oct. 25.\nFee: free\; registration required. Parki
ng fees apply.\nLocation: Meet at the Gothic Gate entrance.\nAccessibilit
y: This will be a small group program that takes place outdoors and trave
ling on a combination of paved and unpaved paths with some uneven surface
s and moderate inclines.\n\n\nFee: free\; registration required. Parking
fees apply.\n\nLocation: Meet on the stone patio behind the Doris Duke Ce
nter\n\nAccessibility: This will be a small group program that takes plac
e outdoors\, and participants will travel on a combination of paved and u
