DESCRIPTION:Conceived and directed by Johann Montozzi-Wood \n \nCo-devised
  & performed with Robb Beharry\, Jessica Flemming\, Anthony Hudson\; \nmu
sical collaborations with Michelle Jamail\, Louis Landry\, Phil Davidson\
, and David Landes\n \nGrandfathered In is an interdisciplinary research
and performance project in which Johann Montozzi-Wood investigates two gr
eat-grandfathers from different sides of his biracial family: Dunker\, a
German immigrant who came to the new world in 1723 to escape religious pe
rsecution\, and Fuel\, a formerly enslaved Civil War veteran born on a No
rth Carolina plantation who co-founded an all-Black colony in Kansas. Joh
ann's genealogical research includes the National Archive's Civil War Pen
sion Records\, Plantation and Enslavement Documents of Stokes County\, No
rth Carolina\, and Dunker's preserved Letter of Manumission and travel jo
urnal. \n \nGrandfathered In is a meditation on ancestral grief and heali
ng\, queer joy\, migration\, and hope against the backdrop of a fallen ci
ty. The company of interdisciplinary collaborators present a concert of d
evised musical fragments and scenes set in the near future. They follow D
aija (they/them)\, the fictional great-grandchild of Dunker and Fuel\, wh
o struggles to move on with their life after the paralyzing loss of a bel
oved caregiver. Through the magic of a queer incognito goddess in the for
m of mysterious heron\, Daija is transported to a world of dream and conf
ronted with ancestor beings on a psychic journey at the crossroads of the
soul. \n \nThis work-in-progress presentation showcases the DNA of the l
onger piece being developed - a poetic dramaturgy through song\, costume\
 , character\, aerial\, and multimedia performance.

DESCRIPTION:A story of how our experiences of love\, loss\, and time shape
our memories and reality.\n\nPerhaps known to some through the Broadway
musical of Hadestown\, the mythical love story of Orpheus and Eurydice be
gins (in some versions) after Orpheus bests the Sirens with his musical s
kills\, saving Jason's Argonauts from their snare. Orpheus marries his be
loved Eurydice\, but she dies soon after their wedding. Not content simpl
y to eulogize Eurydice in song\, Orpheus journeys to the underworld and u
ses music to muzzle Cerberus\, charm Charon\, and compel Hades\, the God
of the Underworld\, to release Eurydice back to the living. On one condit
ion. Orpheus must walk ahead of Eurydice and not look back until they arr
ive\, trusting that she is following him. Whether in happiness at their p
roximity to the upper world or in fear that he has been tricked by Hades
and she isn't there\, just as they near the threshold Orpheus turns back.
Eurydice disappears\, lost to him forever.\n\nIn Sarah Ruhl's version ma
ny of the elements of the story remain the same\; however\, Eurydice is n
ow the main character. Wooed by the beautiful musician\, Orpheus\, Eurydi
ce meets a "nasty interesting man" on her wedding day\, falls down a stai
rwell and dies. Upon arrival in the underworld\, she meets her Father\, w
ho had died before her\, but she does not remember him. While Orpheus sea
rches for a path to her\, her Father attempts to (re)teach Eurydice the m
eaning of things\, especially his love for her. Arriving in the underworl
d\, Orpheus convinces the "nasty interesting man\," who takes on the guis
e of a child (but all are actually Hades) to allow Eurydice to return wit
h him but the condition not to look back remains. On their journey\, Eury
dice\, having built a new version of life with her Father\, calls out Orp
heus' name. He looks back to answer and they are parted again. She return
s to the Underworld and to her Father\, who has dipped himself in the riv
er of forgetfulness after she left and does not recognize her. Learning t
his\, she also dips herself in the river\, just as Orpheus arrives. Again
. And Orpheus\, too\, finds he does not remember.\n\nTickets will go on s

Again
. And Orpheus\, too\, finds he does not remember.\n\nTickets will go on s
 ale Feb 20.
