DESCRIPTION:Surrendering to the Streets: Black Artists of Laughter\, Anger
 \, & Reverence in Recife\, Brazil\, 1940-1980\nBy Dr. Gray Kidd (Villanov
a)\n\nSynopsis: This work of Brazilian cultural history examines a humori
stic universe that few scholars have studied or taken seriously. Set in t
he poor northeastern state of Pernambuco between 1940 and 1980\, the book
asks what it means that the deadly serious legacies of 330 years of chat
tel slavery were a source of both laughter and rage among the poor and no
nwhite. References to the plantation "big house" and slave quarters not o
nly permeated their jokes\, but racism\, with its wounds\, also informed
the popular "wisdom" expressed through their play.\n \nNon-literate\, poo
r\, and nonwhite "artists of laughter" staged forms of entertainment wher
e exaggerated interpersonal violence and racist insult could produce upro
arious and bawdy laughter while African queens\, with their court\, would
parade in the street with their Black dolls (calungas) in a reverent tri
 bute to Africa. As a ludic counter-archive\, mamulengo\, bumba-meu-boi\,
and maracatu are shown to be a metacommentary from the "bottom" that offe
rs key insights into how humble Brazilians understood authority\, as well
as the "authorities\," while revealing their larger visions of class\, r
ace\, gender\, and morality.\n\nSponsored by the Duke Brazil Initiative.

DESCRIPTION:Michael Heckenberger\n\nProfessor\, Department of Anthropology
 \, University of Florida\n\nThursday\, April 11\, 3:00pm - 5:00 pm\n\nSmi

bstract:\n\nLow-density urbanism\, or garden cities\, have been proposed
for several areas of the ancient Amazon\, which refute entrenched images
of pristine nature and primitive tribes frozen in time. A new paradigm i
s emerging that suggest an Amazonian past peopled by large\, regionally o
rganized human communities no less technologically innovative or transfor
mative of nature\, as other small- to medium sized preindustrial urban po
lities globally\, particularly across the Global South's tropical forests
 . In this presentation\, the Upper Xingu basin\, Mato Grosso\, Brazil\,
is described\, including cultural heritage studies and archaeology conduc
ted over the past three decades in collaboration with the Kuikuro Indigen
ous nation within the Território Indígena do Xingu (TIX).\n\nInterdiscipl
inary and intercultural collaborative research is discussed in term of ch
anging research designs and implementation\, including ongoing real-time
 consultation\, locally administrated consent\, participatory mechanisms\,
as well as "bottom up" or community-based approaches to deep Amazonian h
istory. Archaeology\, in this sense or mode\, is a pedagogy of hope\, rev
ealing viable novelty\, as reflected in the archaeological past\, as imag
ined by diverse participants\, and providing alternatives for better comm
on futures. The common aim is to develop mutually intelligible and dialo
gic participatory methods to promote coproduction of knowledge and novel
research directions and synergies\, and locally actionable information\,
which focus on common pragmatic issues\, such as staving off forest decli
ne and die-off\, wildfires\, pollution of rivers and streams\, pandemics\
, other chronic public feature issues\, and the existential crisis for pe
ople and biodiversity in the modern era of an Amazonian tipping event.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Amazon Lab Film Series showing of "The
Invention of the Other" (Dir. Bruno Jorge\, Brazil). This Friday\, April
 19\, 12:30pm - in the Amazon Lab\, Smith Warehouse\, Bay 5.\n\nAbout the
film:\n\n"A record of an attempt to contact the Korubo\, a remote indigen
ous tribe that occupies territory deep inside the Amazonian rainforest.\n
\nDirector Bruno Jorge (Piripkura) accompanies an expedition that will tr
y to contact the Korubo\, an isolated indigenous group that lives near th
e border of Brazil\, Peru and Colombia. Extending far beyond the conventi
ons of pure ethnographic cinema\, Jorge records officials making real\, h
uman connection with the group. The mission is an acknowledgement that th
e jungle no longer presents the greatest danger to the people. Poaching\,
illicit logging and oil smuggling have become so all-pervasive in the re
gion that coercion\, murder and forced disappearances will likely be a ve
ry real threat to the Korubo. Jorge's film is both a wondrous record of c
ontact with a society that has lived far from the reaches of modern life\
, and a bleak reminder of the voraciousness of our world."

DESCRIPTION:African Studies and Black Studies: Intersections\, Genealogies
and New Directions brings together scholars who think from a numbers of
disciplines and transdisciplinarily about the possibilities that come wit
h working at the intersection of African Studies and Black Studies. While
they are distinct fields with their own trajectories and genealogies Bla
ck Studies and African Studies have historically shared a number of impor
tant concerns\; particularly around how racialization relates to state fo
rmation and sovereignty and how the historical and contemporary experienc
es of migration and diaspora have shaped the formation of identity\, nati
onally and globally\, among African and African descended people. More re
cently\, scholars across these fields have engaged with the planetary cri
ses associated with climate change and the Anthropocene as symptomatic of
the ongoing lives of racial capitalism and its colonial remains. This gl
obal view of blackness both acknowledges and complicates national framewo
rks as privileged sites of knowledge-making while invoking the possibilit
 y of Global Black Studies.\n\nDates: Friday\, Nov. 1\, 9am-4pm\, Saturday
 \, Nov. 2\, 9am-1pm\n\nLocations: Smith Warehouse\, Bay 4\, Black Archiva
l Imagination Lab (Fri. morning) and Bay 5\, Ahmadieh Family Lecture Hall
