DESCRIPTION:Medical robots can precisely manipulate tools beyond human cap
 abilities and are thus helpful for surgeries involving delicate tissue in
 teractions. When coupled with live 3D imaging\, such robots can independe
 ntly guide surgical instruments in real time. In practice\, however\, pat
 ients receive only limited benefits from such intraprocedural data stream
 s due to the lack of integration between robots and imaging systems with 
 sufficiently high resolution and framerate. In this seminar\, I discuss w
 ork with medical robots that use optical coherence tomography to guide ne
 edle insertions for cornea transplantation\, enhance surgeon efficiency w
 ith live volumetric guidance\, and perform autonomous eye imaging.

DESCRIPTION:Biology functions at the nanoscale. Thus\, there are special o
 pportunities not only to make biological measurements using nanotechnolog
 y\, but also to interact directly in order to influence biological outcom
 es. I describe how we fabricate and use nanostructures to advance high-th
 roughput gene editing for cellular therapies targeting genetic diseases a
 nd cancer immunotherapy. We also use microfluidics and functionalized nan
 ostructured features in the selective capture\, probing\, and release of 
 single circulating tumor cells in liquid biopsies in order to diagnose ca
 ncers and to assess the efficacy of treatments. We exploit molecular reco
 gnition and phase transitions to create molecular treadmills to grow thre
 e-dimensional co-cultured organoids efficiently. We exploit supramolecula
 r assembly\, acoustofluidics - in collaboration with your own Prof. Tony 
 Jun Huang\, specific surface functionalization\, and plasmonics to enable
  these processes. Nanoscience and nanotechnology developed from chemistry
 \, physics\, biology\, engineering\, medicine\, toxicology\, and a host o
 f other fields. Along the way\, we taught each other our problems\, chall
 enges\, and approaches. The interdisciplinary communication skills that w
 ere developed and are now part of our training remain unique to the field
 . As a result\, nanoscience contributes to a wide range of other fields\,
  such as neuroscience\, the microbiome\, oncology\, cellular agriculture\
 , and more.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nAs mixed reality systems become popular\, new threat
 s to their security and privacy arise\, and it is important to understand
  these emerging threat models and their possible defenses. In this talk\,
  I will discuss recent and ongoing work on mixed reality security and str
 eaming\, focusing on three aspects. First\, I will discuss system-level a
 ttacks arising from side channels such as sensors and hardware performanc
 e counters. Such side channels can be exploited to infer user behavior an
 d interactions with mixed reality devices. Second\, I will discuss applic
 ation-level attacks arising in multi-user scenarios\, where multiple user
 s collaborate in a shared mixed reality experience. A subset of malicious
  users can exploit commercial mixed reality platforms to cause undesirabl
 e effects to other users. Finally\, I will conclude with a discussion of 
 how users can efficiently share 3D models with other\, particularly in wo
 rld-scale scenarios or where 3D Gaussian splat models are involved.\n\nBi
 o\nJiasi Chen is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Com
 puter Science at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. She was previous
 ly at the University of California\, Riverside. She received her Ph.D. fr
 om Princeton University and her B.S. from Columbia University. Her resear
 ch interests include multimedia systems\, mobile computing\, and augmente
 d and virtual reality and its security. Her projects typically involve so
 me combination of mathematical optimization combined with systems experim
 entation. She is a recipient of an NSF CAREER award and several industry 
 awards including a Meta Faculty Research award on trustworthy AR/VR and a
 n Adobe Research Data Science award.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we present a multiscale adaptive data-driven fr
 amework to simulate the behavior of complex systems. Such complex systems
  typically display non-linear\, non-local\, micro-morphic features that h
 ave challenged continuum and discrete models for over a century. We use g
 ranular materials as canonical examples of complex systems to contextuali
 ze our proposed data-driven framework\, highlighting its ability to bridg
 e the continuum scale with experimental data or grain-scale physics-based
  simulations. In contrast to continuum phenomenological models and standa
 rd multiscale techniques\, our approach is parameter-free\, physics-based
 \, and true to the entire data set. Additionally\, we show that the adapt
 ive nature of the data-driven approach gives rise to a new generation of 
 models that admit goal-oriented data assimilation as a standard feature. 
 This feature is not readily available in phenomenological models that rel
 y on a posteriori metrics of error\, resulting in increased complexity\, 
 obscurity\, and inaccuracy. Conversely\, the adaptive data-driven models 
 can incorporate data seamlessly and thereby increase their accuracy to a 
 priori user-specified levels. We argue that this approach to modeling is 
 fundamentally different from current modeling philosophies.

DESCRIPTION:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are a fascinating class of ma
 terials that display soft and semi-soft elastic behavior as well as a les
 s explored viscoelastic behavior.  These materials are composed of liquid
  crystal molecules and polymerizing agents to form a solid that behaves a
 s an elastomer but also like a liquid crystal.  The interaction of these 
 two features provides for a wide and complex range of macroscopically obs
 erved phenomena\, including for example optical actuation\, extreme softn
 ess\, pattern formation\, and high damping to name a few. In this talk\, 
 I will present a general introduction to the physics of these unique mate
 rials at a microscopic as well as macroscopic scale.This will lead to ins
 ights into the long-standing well-established models that are used to und
 erstand their elastic behavior. Consideration will also be given to model
 s that can account for time-dependent\, i.e.\, viscoelastic\, behavior - 
 an aspect that is not well examined in the literature - as well as comput
 ational considerations.\nIn the presentation\, I will mainly consider so-
 called mono-domain liquid crystal elastomers that possess both a viscous 
 director response as well as a viscoelastic elastomeric network response.
  The modeling framework will be built from the continuum scale\, utilizin
 g the formal principles of invariance of expended power to develop the go
 verning balance laws for such materials accounting for loads that can imp
 ose twist directly at the continuum level.  This framework is combined wi
 th free-energy dissipation arguments to generate restrictions on the poss
 ible constitutive relations for LCEs based upon hypothesized functional d
 ependencies of the free-energy function.This mathematical framework leads
  to natural choices for evolution laws governing the viscous kinematics t
 hat have an appealing and intuitive nature. We demonstrate the utility of
  the model by considering its capabilities in comparison to experimental 
 data\, while also learning some cautionary information about the applicat
 ion of such materials in engineering practice.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nRecent advances in heterogeneous integration and adv
 anced packaging technology have enabled the combination of multiple funct
 ionalities into a single system. Among various\, remote epitaxy technique
 s\, which we have pioneered since 2017\, has shown great potential for pr
 oducing single-crystalline compound materials\, such as III-V\, III-N\, a
 nd complex oxides on 2D materials. The slippery surface of 2D materials a
 llows the epitaxial films to be easily released from the substrate while 
 the substrate can be reused. This technology facilitates the fabrication 
 of various electronic and optoelectronic components that can be integrate
 d on both the front and back-sides of Si CMOS circuitry. The Integration 
 of sensors\, power delivery network and high bandwidth memory with CMOS c
 omputing units through 3D packaging technology attracts significant inter
 est\, especially for on-device AI. This advanced integration not only enh
 ances computational capabilities but also opens up new possibilities in e
 dge intelligence. Here\, I will discuss how this cutting-edge technology 
 revolutionizing edge intelligence\, driving advancements in biomedical de
 vices and robotics applications.\nBio\nKyusang Lee is currently an Associ
 ate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Materials Scienc
 e and Engineering departments at University of Virginia. He received his 
 B.S. degree from Korea University in 2005\, M.S. degree from Johns Hopkin
 s University in 2009\, and Ph.D. degree from University of Michigan in 20
 14\, all in Electrical Engineering. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the D
 epartment of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Universit
 y of Michigan\, and a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Mechani
 cal Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His resea
 rch interests highlight the use of thin-film compound semiconductors for 
 monolithic 3D integration with Si CMOS circuits through advanced packagin
 g techniques\, with a particular emphasis on applications for edge intell
 igence in biomedical and robotics applications. He is the recipient of th
 e NSF faculty early career award and AFOSR young investor program award. 
 His works have been published in Nature\, Science\, Science Robotics\, Na
 ture materials\, Nature Nanotechnology\, Nature electronics\, Science Adv
 ances\, PNAS and Nature communications etc.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nAs the energy demands of computing escalate\, espe
 cially with the growing prevalence of AI\, there is a critical need to en
 hance both the efficiency and sustainability of computing systems. This t
 alk will first present strategies for designing energy- and temperature-a
 ware systems using advanced design and packaging techniques\, including 3
 D integration\, on-chip photonics\, and optically controlled memories. Ne
 xt\, it will explore how AI-powered methods can automate performance debu
 gging using system telemetry data\, thereby improving efficiency and mini
 mizing waste. Lastly\, the talk will introduce approaches for transformin
 g data centers into "flexible computing" systems that can participate in 
 emerging power grid programs and respond to fluctuations in green energy 
 availability. The overarching goal is to chart a new course for designing
  sustainable computing systems that effectively integrate hardware and so
 ftware innovations.\nBio: \nProf. Ayse K. Coskun is a full professor at B
 oston University (BU) at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Departme
 nt\, where she leads the Performance and Energy Aware Computing Laborator
 y (PeacLab) to solve problems towards making computer systems more intell
 igent and energy-efficient. Coskun is also the Director of the BU Center 
 for Information and Systems Engineering (CISE) and recently served as the
  interim Associate Dean for Research at BU College of Engineering. Coskun
 's research interests intersect design automation\, computer systems\, an
 d architecture. Her research outcomes are culminated in several technical
  awards\, including the NSF CAREER Award\, the IEEE CEDA Ernest Kuh Early
  Career Award\, and an IBM Faculty Award. Coskun has been an avid collabo
 rator of industry (including with IBM TJ Watson\, Oracle\, AMD\, Intel) a
 nd received several patents during her time at Sun Microsystems (now Orac
 le). Her research team has released several impactful open-source softwar
 e artifacts and tools to the community (such as PACT and Prodigy). Coskun
  regularly participated in outreach programs and founded a new forum call
 ed "Advancing Diversity in EDA" (DivEDA). She currently serves as the Dep
 uty Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Computer Aided Design. Co
 skun received her PhD degree in Computer Engineering from University of C
 alifornia San Diego.

DESCRIPTION:Rydberg atoms in fundamental physics and quantum-technology ap
 plications  \nGeorg Raithel\, Professor of Physics\, University of Michig
 an \nRydberg atoms\, which are atoms with a tenuously bound valence elect
 ron\, are highly sensitive to external electromagnetic fields and to othe
 r atoms. Fundamental work on cold Rydberg atoms and ions includes the stu
 dy of molecular bonding based on low-energy electron scattering and long-
 range multipolar interactions\, characterization and utilization of trapp
 ing forces and A-square transitions afforded by the ponderomotive interac
 tion\, high-precision measurement of physical constants\, such as the Ryd

  I will describe several activities of my group in these areas. Further\,
  recent applications of Rydberg atoms include quantum simulators and quan
 tum information methods\, as well as sensors for dc and rf electric field
 s in vapor cells and in high vacuum. I will present results on Rydberg el
 ectric field sensing in vapor cells and in high-vacuum cold-ion sources\,
  and on Rydberg level shifts and broadening caused by low-pressure inert 
 gases. Prospects in spectroscopic diagnostics of electric fields in low-p
 ressure plasma will be discussed.

  conformal prediction is required.  Conformal prediction is a mathematica
 l framework for uncertainty quantification of machine learning models. Or
 iginated from Statistics\, this framework is now considered as one of the
  main tools for constructing uncertainty sets around the predictions obta
 ined by modern machine learning models such as deep neural networks and l
 arge language models.\n\nMy goal in this talk is to (i) provide a detaile
 d introduction to conformal prediction and cover a few of the central ide
 as in this area\, and (ii) explain one of our recent algorithmic results 
 in this area on constructing (near-) optimal uncertainty sets in terms of
  size.\n\nMethods in conformal prediction are often founded on probabilis
 tic relations and laws. Consequently\, this area could be an interesting 
 avenue for theorists to explore and contribute to.\n\nBio\nHamed Hassani 
 is currently an associate professor ofthe Electrical and Systems Engineer
 ing Department\, the Computer and Information Systems Department\, and th
 e Department of Statistics and Data Science at the Universityof Pennsylva
 nia. Prior to that\, he was a research fellow at Simons Institute for the

DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nNeuro-symbolic AI presents tremendous opportunities 
 for more efficient foundation models in the form of integrating classical
  symbolic methods with deep learning. However\, that integration is faced
  with several key challenges\, including the correspondence between symbo
 lic and neural systems and the scale of modern AI models. In this talk\, 
 we cover some of these challenges and discuss potential pathways forward\
 , including the role that neuro-symbolic AI can play in the development o
 f more generalizable autonomous systems.\nBio\n\nAlvaro Velasquez is a pr
 ogram manager at DARPA\, where he currently leads programs on neuro-symbo
 lic AI and autonomy. Before that\, Alvaro oversaw the machine intelligenc
 e portfolio for the Information Directorate of the Air Force Research Lab
 oratory (AFRL). Alvaro is a recipient of the distinguished paper award fr
 om AAAI and best paper and patent awards from AFRL. He has authored over 
 100 papers and three patents\, serves as Associate Editor of the IEEE Tra
 nsactions on Artificial Intelligence\, and is a co-founder of the Neuro-s
 ymbolic Systems (NeuS) conference.

DESCRIPTION:Optical microscopy plays a pivotal role in the understanding o
 f spatial and temporal dynamics of biological systems and for probing mat
 erial systems. Light interacts gently with biological systems\, which mak
 es imaging extremely powerful for observing living systems. As a result\,
  optical microscopy enables everything from the discovery of basic biolog
 ical processes to the ability to diagnose disease to the discovery of new
  materials. Optical microscopy is primarily bound by three limits: spatia
 l resolution\, molecular specificity of imaging targets\, and imaging dep
 th in tissue. My group develops new methods for extracting a greater rang
 e of information from optical microscopy. I will discuss several aspects 
 of computational imaging with widefield nonlinear microscopy using second
  harmonic generation (SHG)\, third harmonic generation (THG)\, and cohere
 nt anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS). These imaging methods are extreme
 ly useful for imaging studies ranging from biological samples to novel ma
 terial systems. In biological samples\, SHG\, THG\, and CARS signal gener
 ation is dominated by signals from collagen in the extracellular matrix a
 nd from muscle fibers. I will discuss computational adaptive optics for S
 HG and THG holographic imaging. In addition\, I will discuss a new widefi
 eld computational super resolution CARS microscopy that offers a powerful
  new approach to vibrational spectroscopic imaging.

  system in many LMICs. For example\, pathological diagnosis of biopsies i
 s used to diagnose a majority of cancers\; however\, only 30% of LMICs re
 ported having pathology services available. Additionally\, while excision
 al surgeries are at the foundation of cancer treatment\, 90% of patients 
 in LMICs do not have access to surgery. In struggling healthcare systems\
 , addressing the growing cancer burden may require a new vision - one tha
 t leverages low-cost\, portable\, electricity-independent\, and accessibl
 e biomedical technologies to improve cancer management in LMICs. Dr. Muel
 ler's lab is focused on developing accessible biomedical technologies via
  a human-centered design approach to improve the management of cancer in 
 LMICs. In this talk\, Dr. Mueller will describe a combination of innovati
 ons that are at different stages in the translational pipeline to transfo
 rm the management of cancer in LMICs. These innovations include: 1) gel e
 thanol ablation\, an accessible treatment that involves injecting ethanol
  into a lesion to cause necrosis\, and 2) a low-cost\, reusable laparosco
 pe for intra-abdominal cancer surgeries performed in LMICs.

DESCRIPTION:In this work\, we address this challenge by adapting Fourier L
 ight Field Microscopy [3] (an established method for high-speed\, 3D micr
 oscopy) to the mesoscale regime alongside computational imaging technique
 s. Specifically\, we present two novel imaging systems which work in dist
 inct application spaces. First\, our Fourier Light Field Multiview Stereo
 scope (FiLM-Scope) consists of a high-SBP primary lens placed in front of
  a multi-camera array microscope (MCAM) [4] to acquire 48 high resolution
 \, multi-perspective images of a 3 cm x 3 cm field-of-view. Alongside a s
 elf-supervised machine learning algorithm\, this system can provide nearl
 y isotropic resolution in all three dimensions down to 20 um to improve 3
 D visualization in microsurgical settings. The second system is our Ultra
 -high Speed Fourier Light Field Mesoscope (US-FLFM)\, which combines Four
 ier Light Field Imaging with an ultra-high speed camera to provide multi-
 perspective videos of a ~3x3mm area at over 100kHz frame rates. We are cu
 rrently using this system to study energy flow in the exoskeletons of sna
 pping trap jaw ants. \nTaken together\, these systems demonstrate how Fou
 rier Light Field imaging at the mesoscale can transform how we study syst
 ems-level biology.

 es... and Other Applications\n\nHistorically Atomic layer deposition (ALD
 ) has been regarded as a lab-only process\, disregarded as too expensive 
 and an unrealistic process for commercial adoption outside of semiconduct
 or manufacturing. However\, several methods for high volume manufacturing
  have been developed over the last decade\, making ALD on powders afforda
 ble as a material-upgrading technique. Forge Nano has patented\, construc
 ted\, and demonstrated the highest throughput ALD capability in the world
 \, unlocking new potential for lower cost integration of ALD into product
 s. ALD is a well utilized platform technology for powders\, porous partic
 les\, and high-surface area objects that has been widely demonstrated thr
 oughout the literature. Fundamentally\, ALD on powders or any high surfac
 e area surface is the same as on flat surfaces -- if the chemistry is sel
 f-limiting\, the precursors can be kept separate and supplied at a concen
 tration to saturate the available surface area\, the thin film growth wil
 l be controlled and uniform. In practice\, the very high surface area\, l
 ong diffusion pathways\, and complexities of gas solids mixing bring a fe
 w additional challenges not usually encountered during lab-scale ALD. \n\
 nIn summary\, ALD is a critical tool for anyone attempting to modify inte
 rfaces at the R&D scale.  Therefore\, ALD should also be utilized at the 
 manufacturing-scale to maintain an edge in a competitive market. This tal
 k will discuss ALD as a means of controlling surface phenomena and its im
 plementation in high volume manufacturing for powder modification and pro
 vide a couple use-case examples.

DESCRIPTION:Expansion microscopy (ExM) has emerged as a transformative tec
 hnique in super-resolution imaging\, offering a cost-effective alternativ
 e to conventional optical methods. As the ExM field approaches its 10th a
 nniversary\, this talk provides you with a developer's perspective on ExM
 's advantages\, challenges\, applications\, and future directions. At Shi
  Lab\, we have developed several innovative ExM techniques\, including La
 bel-Retention ExM\, Proximity-Labeling ExM\, Landscape ExM\, and GelTOPO.
  Each method aims to address a key limitation of ExM such as signal loss 
 and hydrogel distortion\, or to explore an imaging territory including in
 teractome imaging and protein-lipid contextual imaging. The presentation 
 will conclude with a case study demonstrating how ExM was instrumental in
  uncovering a novel aging mechanism linked to ribosome biogenesis and nuc
 lear deformation. Collectively\, these advancements significantly enhance
  the reliability and accuracy of expansion microscopy\, paving the way fo
 r new biological discoveries.\n\nDr. Xiaoyu Shi is an Assistant Professor
  across three departments - Developmental and Cell Biology\, Chemistry\, 
 and Biomedical Engineering - at the University of California\, Irvine. Dr
 . Shi's academic journey began with a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry and Ast
 rophysics\, specializing in nonlinear optics\, from the University of Cal
 ifornia-Davis under the mentorship of Professor Cheuk Ng. Her postdoctora
 l endeavors took her to the University of California-San Francisco\, wher
 e she worked with Professor Bo Huang to delve into the intricacies of sup
 er-resolution microscopy.    In 2019\, Dr. Shi established her laboratory
  at UC Irvine. Her research group is at the forefront of integrating opti
 cal and chemical methodologies to advance super-resolution microscopy and
  spatial proteomics. These cutting-edge technologies power her lab's expl
 oration of cell aging\, neurodegeneration\, and cancer mechanisms.    The
  science community has well recognized Dr. Shi's innovations. She has bee
 n honored with prestigious awards for early career faculty. Among these a
 ccolades are the NIH Director's New Innovator Award\, the NIH Pathway to 
 Independence Award\, the NSF CAREER award\, two Chan Zuckerberg awards\, 
 and the Hellman Fellowship.

 ile human tissues with spatial-omics techniques and connect them across s
 cales from molecular to multicell modules. I will also share about our bi

DESCRIPTION:Advancing Regenerative Medicine via Biomaterials Therapy\n\nBi
 omaterials science and engineering have revolutionized biological researc
 h and regenerative medicine. This presentation explores two disparate the
 rapeutic areas: 4D hydrogels for muscle and ligament regeneration\; and\,
  microphysiological systems (MPS) (i.e.\, organs chips) for mRNA delivery
  via lipid nanoparticles (LNPs).\nMy group has developed modular semi-syn
 thetic hyaluronic acid-based (HyA) hydrogels that mimic native extracellu
 lar matrix properties allowing independent control over mechanical and bi
 ological characteristics. These 4D HyA hydrogels serve as assistive matri
 ces\, coordinating intrinsic and extrinsic determinants of tissue regener
 ation or progenitor cell survival. Applications in muscle regeneration af
 ter traumatic injury and rotator cuff tears will be discussed.\nAdditiona
 lly\, we have developed various MPS\, including a cardiac MPS6\, containi
 ng human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes to identify
  lipid nanoparticle (LNP)/mRNA complexes capable of transfecting cardiomy
 ocytes in a 3D cardiac micromuscle. Our novel acid-degradable PEG (ADP)-L
 NP formulations have demonstrated enhanced diffusion and gene editing eff
 iciency in the cardiac MPS\, with in vivo validation showing higher heart
  transfection and lower liver uptake compared to standard LNP formulation
 s. This groundbreaking approach\, combining organ chip technology with LN
 P screening\, paves the way for advanced non-animal preclinical platforms
  in drug discovery and the development of new cardiac therapies.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nDynamic biomaterials exhibit highly useful properti
 es that are impossible with traditional materials but crucial for a wide 
 variety of emerging applications in biomedicine. These materials typicall
 y employ enthalpy-dominated crosslinking interactions that become weaker 
 at elevated temperatures\, leading to significant softening. Herein\, we 
 will discuss the development of a physical hydrogel platform exploiting d
 ynamic and multivalent interactions between biopolymers and nanoparticles
  that are strongly entropically driven\, providing alternative temperatur
 e dependencies than typical for materials of this type. We will discuss t
 he implications of these crosslinking thermodynamics on the observed mech
 anical properties and discuss the desired mechanical properties for injec
 tability\, including viscous flow under shear stress (shear-thinning) and
  rapid recovery of mechanical properties when the applied stress is relax
 ed (self-healing). Moreover\, the hierarchical construction of these biph
 asic hydrogels enables innovative approaches to formulation and delivery 
 of a diverse array of compounds over user-defined timeframes ranging from
  days to months. In one example application\, we demonstrate that these u
 nique material characteristics can be leveraged for controlled locoregion
 al exposure of immunomodulatory cargo to greatly enhance anti-cancer immu
 ne responses. In another example\, we demonstrate that the dynamic struct
 ure of these materials can be leveraged for co-delivery of immunostimulat
 ory cytokines and CAR-T cells to improve cancer treatments. Overall\, thi
 s talk will illustrate our recent efforts exploiting dynamic and multival
 ent interactions between polymers and nanoparticles to generate injectabl
 e hydrogel depot technologies exhibiting properties not previously observ
 ed in biomaterials and affording unique opportunities in biomedicine.

DESCRIPTION:Engineering Sex-Aware and Biomimetic Platforms to Investigate 
 Macrophage Function\, Fibroblast Remodeling\, and Monocyte Infiltration\n
 \nSex differences\, immune dysfunction\, and tissue remodeling are critic
 al drivers of women's health disorders\, yet their combined contributions
  remain poorly understood. Our work integrates three complementary studie
 s to uncover immune-stromal interactions across contexts of hormonal regu
 lation\, fibrosis\, and autoimmunity.\nSex-specific macrophage responses:
  Using male-derived (RAW 264.7) and female-derived (J774A.1) murine macro
 phage cell lines\, we investigated the effects of 17β‑estradiol (E2) on e
 strogen receptor signaling\, phagocytosis\, and inflammatory phenotypes. 
 RAW 264.7 macrophages exhibited increased ESR1 expression and enhanced ph
 agocytic capacity at high E2 doses\, whereas J774A.1 macrophages showed r
 educed ESR1 expression and impaired phagocytosis\, revealing divergent es
 trogen sensitivities with implications for immune regulation.\nUterine fi
 broid remodeling: We developed a biomimetic PEG-based hydrogel platform t
 o model fibroblast-driven extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling in uterin
 e fibroids. Primary human uterine fibroblasts treated with TGF‑β3 exhibit
 ed stiffness-dependent activation\, characterized by increased α‑smooth m
 uscle actin\, collagen deposition\, and fibroblast elongation in fibroid-
 like environments. This platform enables mechanistic studies of ECM-drive
 n fibrosis and offers a physiologically relevant model of fibroid pathoge
 nesis.\nAutoimmune monocyte infiltration: To investigate immune recruitme
 nt under inflammatory conditions\, we engineered a novel PDMS-PEG microfl
 uidic platform mimicking vascular-tissue interfaces. Upon lipopolysacchar
 ide (LPS) stimulation\, monocytes exhibited significant migration from a 
 central microchannel into a surrounding 3D hydrogel matrix\, demonstratin
 g the system's ability to model immune infiltration dynamics.\nTogether\,
  these studies provide complementary insights into hormonal\, mechanical\
 , and inflammatory regulation of immune-stromal interactions\, advancing 
 physiologically relevant platforms for women's health and autoimmune dise
 ase research.

 d Dysfunction of the reproductive system can cause significant health seq

 icularly in women.  Therefore\, understanding the biological basis of rep
 roductive health and developing innovative approaches to treat reproducti
 ve disease are critical for the health of individuals\, families and soci
 ety.  In this lecture\, I will discuss our work integrating stem cell bio
 logy\, developmental biology and genomics to create models of the reprodu
 ctive system with an emphasis on regenerating cells of the ovary.   I wil

DESCRIPTION:Engineering bridges science and technology\, driving innovatio
 n for the benefit of people and society. Today we live in an increasingly
  technology-dependent world shaped by engineers - and the pace of change 
 is increasing exponentially. This calls for a reexamination of how we edu
 cate and empower engineers to advance technology for the long-term welfar
 e of humanity and the planet. In this talk I will share ideas for transfo
 rming engineering education\, taken from relevant publications of the Nat
 ional Academies\, and discuss ways the National Academy of Engineering ca
 n promote coordination and foster collaboration to build an engineering w
 orkforce that is fit to shape a brighter future for all.\n \n \nBio:\n \n
 Tsu-Jae King Liu is President of the National Academy of Engineering as o
 f July 1\, 2025. A distinguished engineer and academic leader\, she earne
 d her B.S.\, M.S.\, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford Uni
 versity. She joined the faculty of the University of California\, Berkele
 y in 1996\, and served as Dean of the College of Engineering from 2018-20
 24.\n\nLiu is renowned for her research in microelectronics and for co-de
 veloping the FinFET transistor\, now used in all leading-edge computer ch
 ips and smartphones. She has authored over 550 publications and holds 97 
 U.S. patents. Her recognitions include the DARPA Significant Technical Ac
 hievement Award and the IEEE Electron Devices Society Education Award.\n\
 nShe is a Fellow of the IEEE and the National Academy of Inventors\, and 
 a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Liu serves on the B
 oards of Directors for Intel Corporation and MaxLinear Inc.\, and has con
 tributed nationally through leadership in microelectronics workforce deve
 lopment and service to advisory boards for NSF\, NIST\, and the White Hou
 se PCAST.

DESCRIPTION:A 6 eV bandgap crystal used to be a textbook example of an ele
 ctrical insulator.  But today it has become possible to make pn diodes\, 
 transistors\, LEDs\, and lasers with ultrawide bandgap nitride semiconduc
 tors.  In the first part of my talk\, I will discuss how over the last 25
  years\, we have discovered a powerful new tool rooted in the physics of 
 broken symmetry in semiconductor crystals to tame the conductivity of ult
 rawide bandgap semiconductor heterostructures.  I will discuss how this l
 ong and systematic study has now unleashed their remarkable potential to 
 advance the field of semiconductor devices beyond what was imaginable in 
 the 20th century\, ranging from electronics\, photonics to memory.  In th
 e second part of my talk\, I will discuss how we are using these new adva
 nces in semiconductor materials and device physics and high-speed microwa
 ve electronics to enable new advances to the emerging field of devices fo
 r quantum computation\, communication\, sensing\, and metrology.\n\nDebde
 ep Jena is the David E. Burr Professor of Engineering at Cornell Universi
 ty.  His teaching and research are in the quantum physics of semiconducto
 rs and electronic and photonic devices based on quantized semiconductor s
 tructures (e.g. Nitrides\, Oxides\, 2D Materials)\, and their heterostruc
 tures with superconductors\, ferroelectrics and magnets\, with device app
 lications in energy-efficient transistors\, light-emitting diodes and RF 
 and power electronics and quantum computation and communications.  The re
 search from his group has been published in more than 500 journal papers 
 including in Science\, Nature\, Physical Review Letters\, Applied Physics
  Letters and Electron Device Letters and garnered multiple patents.  His 
 group's research has resulted in two spinoff companies (Soctera and Gallo
 x).  He is a fellow of the APS and the IEEE and is the winner of teaching
  awards and research awards such as the ISCS young scientist award in 201
 2\, MBE young scientist award in 2014\, the IBM faculty award in 2012\, a
 nd the Intel Outstanding Research award in 2020.  He is the author of the
  new textbook "Quantum Physics of Semiconductor Materials and Devices".

DESCRIPTION:AlN has been ardently pursued as one of the most promising ult
 ra-wide bandgap semiconductors (UWBGs) after GaN and SiC as the industry 
 has been expanding rapidly on the high-volume manufacturing of GaN and Si
 C based technologies\, including 12-inch GaN-on-Si\, 8-inch SiC substrate
 s and processing foundries etc.  In this talk\, I will present the findin
 gs in our journey in developing new RF and power electronic devices on Al
 N in the past decades\, and I will focus on two examples: AlN XHEMTs and 
 nitride CMOS.\n\nAlN XHEMT is a new family of high electron mobility tran
 sistors (HEMTs) based on pseudomorphically strained channel on AlN.  Both
  the top and bottom AlN/GaN interfaces have been carefully examined and i
 mproved along with the carrier transport in a thin GaN channel up to 20 n
 m. However\, the first generations of AlN XHEMTs delivered RF performance
  about 1/10th of expected. What has been limiting the RF performance of t
 hese AlN XHEMTs? We are finally able to answer this question in our recen
 t work\, which is surprising but not unexpected. The fundamental understa
 nding of the 2D hole gas residing at the GaN/AlN interface leads to new a
 pproaches to realize high-performance p-channel GaN FETs\, promising >10X
  improvement over the statement of the art.\n\nHuili Grace Xing is curren
 tly the Director of SUPREME - a SRC JUMP2.0 research center\, the William
  L. Quackenbush Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, Materi
 als Science and Engineering at Cornell University\, and having served as 
 the Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies of the College of Engi
 neering in 2020-2022.  She is a recipient of the AFOSR Young Investigator
  Award\, NSF CAREER Award\, ISCS Young Scientist Award\, Intel Outstandin
 g Researcher Award\, the SIA/SRC University Researcher Award\, the Cornel
 l Engineering Research Excellence Award and Michael Tien'72 Teaching Awar
 d.  She is a fellow of APS\, IEEE & AAAS.
