DESCRIPTION:This talk describes our efforts to build cyber-physical system
 s to help care for people with special needs. The term "special needs" co
 vers a wide range of cognitive and physical limitations. With a growing w
 orldwide population of people with special needs\, we need to find new wa
 ys to give these people meaningful lives.  Because the special needs popu
 lation covers such a wide range of conditions\, the traditional\, diagnos
 is-driven medical approach will not scale. My student Honggab Kim and I h
 ave developed tracking algorithms that can generate useful activity summa
 ries from sparse sensor data in complex environments.  We have also devel
 oped a clustering algorithm to compare activities and identify outliers.

DESCRIPTION:Halide perovskites have recently emerged as a new family of se
 miconducting materials that are revolutionizing the field of photovoltaic
 s. The rapid development of perovskite solar cells is being led by the ad
 vances in microstructural/compositional engineering of perovskite thin fi
 lms. In this context\, understanding the 'birth' (crystallization) and 'd
 eath' (degradation)\, and developing new methods for the 'life-lengthenin
 g' (stabilization) of perovskites are becoming the most significant resea
 rch directions.\n\nTo learn more about the MatSci Program at Duke: matsci
 .duke.edu\n\nIn this talk\, first\, I will look at fundamental phenomena 
 pertaining to nucleation & grain growth and grain-boundary evolution invo
 lved in the thin-film crystallization of perovskites from a materials-sci
 ence perspective. Established scientific principles that govern these phe
 nomena are invoked in the context of specific examples. Based on these fu
 ndamentals\, our group have established a set of new synthetic strategies
  for scalable processing of high-performance large-area perovskite thin f
 ilms and devices. Second\, I will discuss the role of grain boundaries in
  the degradation processes of perovskites\, and show our recent progress 
 in the grain-boundary engineering for enhancing the perovskite stability.

DESCRIPTION:Our intuitive understanding of light has its foundation in the
  ray approximation and is intimately connected with our vision: as far as
  our eyes are concerned light behaves like a stream of particles. Here we
  look inside the wavelength and study the properties of plasmonic structu
 res with dimensions of just a few nanometres: a tenth or even a hundredth
  of the wavelength of visible light\, where the ray picture fails utterly
 . In this talk we show how the new concept of transformation optics that 
 manipulates electric and magnetic field lines rather than rays can provid
 e an equally intuitive understanding of sub wavelength phenomena and at t
 he same time be an exact description at the level of Maxwell's equations.
  The concepts are applied to a number of plasmonic structures revealing u
 nexpected phenomena such as hidden symmetries and compacted dimensions.\n
 \nJohn Pendry is a condensed matter theorist and has worked at Imperial C
 ollege since 1981. He has worked extensively on electronic and structural
  properties of surfaces developing the theory of low energy diffraction a
 nd of electronic surface states. More recently he turned his attention to
  photonic materials this interest led to his present research into the re
 markable electromagnetic properties of materials where the normal respons
 e to electromagnetic fields is reversed\, leading to negative values for 
 the refractive index.

DESCRIPTION:Today's large-scale computers\, such as high-performance compu
 ting clusters or the cloud\, experience growing challenges in delivering 
 predicable performance\, as well as in efficiency\, resilience\, and secu
 rity. Much of computer system management has traditionally relied on expe
 rt analysis and manual hands-on diagnostics. In this talk\, I will demons
 trate my group's recent work on designing "automated analytics" methods f
 or computing systems\, following a longer term vision where complex compu
 ting systems are able to self-manage and improve. Specifically\, I will f
 irst talk about how to systematically diagnose root causes of performance
  variations (or "anomalies") on large-scale computers\, which can cause s
 ubstantial efficiency losses and higher cost. Second\, I will introduce m
 achine learning-based methods to discover applications on HPC or cloud sy
 stems and discuss how such discovery can help reduce vulnerabilities and 
 avoid unwanted applications. This talk will also highlight methods for me
 aningful data collection from computing systems and point out future dire
 ctions in automating computing system management.

DESCRIPTION:A single design defect can wreak havoc across thousands of dep
 loyed instances of autonomous systems or cyber-physical systems (CPS) suc
 h as self-driving cars\, drones\, and medical devices. Can rigorous appro
 aches based on formal methods and control theory improve safety in autono
 mous systems by transforming the conventional trial-and-error paradigm? V
 erification and synthesis for typical models of real-world autonomous sys
 tems and CPS are well-known to be hard due to their high dimensionality\,
  nonlinearities\, and their nondeterministic and hybrid nature. In this t
 alk\, I will present new verification and synthesis algorithms which sugg
 est that these challenges can be overcome and that rigorous approaches ar
 e indeed promising. The common ingredient underlying my algorithms is aut
 omated sensitivity analysis\, which leads to semi-decision procedures for
  verification and synthesis\, with soundness\, completeness\, and optimal
 ity guarantees. I will introduce the first bounded safety verification al
 gorithm for nonlinear hybrid systems. This data-driven algorithm\, which 
 is the basis for the C2E2 tool\, can also be used for compositional verif
 ication of networked and distributed autonomous systems. Then I will pres
 ent my work on the DryVR framework\, which is the first approach that can
  verify real-world CPS with incomplete or imprecise mathematical models. 
 The final part of my talk will rely on symbolic sensitivity analysis with
  applications in control synthesis for large linear systems wit

DESCRIPTION:The modelling of cracks and shearbands\, arising from brittle 
 and ductile response of materials\, poses significant computational chall
 enges. In this talk I will present our recent developments in modelling o
 f fracture phenomena that address some of these challenges. \nThe first p
 art of the talk\, devoted to brittle and quasi-brittle fracture\, will fo
 cus on a new formulation based on a high order extended finite element me
 thod (XFEM) and Irwin's integral. XFEM provide an attractive alternative 
 to standard finite elements in that they do not require fine spatial reso
 lution in the vicinity of discontinuities nor do they require repeated re
 -meshing to properly address propagation of cracks. \nThe second part of 
 the talk will focus on dynamic fracture of metals which may result in bri
 ttle and/or ductile fracture depending on factors such as material proper
 ties\, loading rate and specimen geometry. At high strain rates\, a therm
 o-plastic instability known as shear banding may occur\, which typically 
 precedes fracture\, while at lower rates brittle fracture is observed. I 
 will present a novel unified finite element formulations for shear bands 
 and cracks\, in which cracks are modelled by a modified phase field metho
 d. The main modelling aspects along with some numerical examples to illus
 trate the performance of the model will be presented.

DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, we discuss enriched Galerkin (EG) algor
 ithms for modeling Darcy flow\, reactive transport\, and geomechanics in 
 porous media.  This approach involves enriching the continuous Galerkin f
 inite element method with  discontinuous elements. For transport EG is co
 upled with entropy residual stabilization for transport. The method provi
 des locally and globally conservative fluxes\, which are crucial for coup
 led flow and transport problems. In particular\, numerical simulations of
  viscous fingering instabilities in heterogeneous porous media and Hele-S
 haw cells are illustrated as well as results for two phase flow. Here dyn
 amic adaptive mesh refinement is applied in order to save computational c
 ost for large-scale three dimensional applications. In addition\, entropy
  residual based stabilization for high order EG transport systems prevent
 s any spurious oscillations. Applications of EG to acidizing in carbonate
  reservoirs and coupling with mechanics using fixed stress is also discus
 sed. This work was done in collaboration with Sanghyun Lee at Florida Sta
 te and Rencheng Dong at UT-Austin.

DESCRIPTION:Membrane interfaces formed at junctions between cells are ofte
 n associated with characteristic patterns of membrane protein organizatio
 n\, such as in epithelial tissues and between cells of the immune system.
  While this organization can be influenced by receptor clustering\, lipid
  domain formation\, and cytoskeletal dynamics\, this talk will describe h
 ow the size of the gap between two membranes can directly contribute to t
 he spatial arrangement of membrane proteins and resulting cell-cell signa
 ling at membrane interfaces. Using in vitro systems based on giant unilam
 ellar vesicles and live cells of the immune system\, we are investigating
  how fluid membrane interfaces linked by adhesion proteins can drive segr
 egation of non-adhesive proteins and how this segregation can affect macr
 ophage signaling during receptor-mediated target recognition. Results fro

DESCRIPTION:Preventing fractures due to skeletal neoplasms depends on obje
 ctive criteria that reflect the interaction of the tumor with the host bo
 ne. Clinicians make subjective assessments regarding a patient's fracture
  risk and response to treatment based on plain radiographs and clinical s
 ymptoms now recognized to be inaccurate. Metastatic cancer alters both th
 e material and geometric properties of the bone\; failure to account for 
 changes in both of these parameters limits the accuracy of these fracture
  predictions. Rigidity is the structural property that integrates both th
 e material and geometric properties of the bone\; the axial (EA)\, bendin
 g (EI)\, and torsional (GJ) rigidity determine the capacity of the bone t
 o resist axial\, bending and twisting loads respectively. \n\nDr. Snyder 
 is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery\, Harvard Medical School and Resear
 ch Professor of Biomedical Engineering\, Boston University School of Engi
 neering. As a Board Certified Pediatric Orthopaedic surgeon on staff at B
 oston Children's Hospital\, he co-directs the Cerebral Palsy Center and s
 upervises the Spinal Muscle Atrophy Clinic. His clinical practice focuses
  on treating congenital and acquired deformities about the hip\, spine an
 d appendicular skeleton as a consequence of neuromuscular disease and ped

DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, we will present vignettes of various re
 search projects in our group\, the focus of which have primarily been on 
 multicomponent soft materials. Examples will be drawn from\, various clas
 ses of polymeric\, colloidal\, nanoparticulate and biological systems\, t
 o elucidate the relationship between material microstructure/morphology\,
  chemistry\, formulation and macroscopic behavior.  We hope to illustrate
  this notion by using examples of (a) hybrid polymer-inorganic aerogels\,
  where ultra-light\, yet mechanically robust aerogels are developed with 
 multifunctionality. \n\nThe degree of oleophilicity/hydrophobicity is exp
 loited to render these materials useful in oil and chemical spill remedia
 tion while the degree of interaction between the polymer and silica is ut
 ilized to make this mechanically flexible and flame retardant\; (b) photo
 -activated polymer hydrogels wherein we examine the gelation of alginate 
 undergoing a two-step ionic crosslinking upon ultraviolet (UV) irradiatio
 n using in situ dynamic rheology\, (c) hydrophobically-modified associati
 ve polymers and microgels in which the role of hydrophobic associations i

 logies (ADAPT) is developing a combined physics - machine learning platfo
 rm for assessing Process-Structure-Property relationships in metals addit
 ive manufacturing. An added benefit of this approach is the inherent stat
 istical core of the models - the AI platform is not only capable of learn
 ing the PSP relations of AM\, but also providing statistical reports on p
 art quality and variation in a manner conducive to certification. \n\nIn 
 this presentation\, it will be shown how such a framework can be used to 
 optimize parts\, processes\, and materials for metals additive manufactur
 ing\, resulting in reduced times and costs for qualifications. The parts 
 example will cover accelerated qualification of a 17-4 Stainless Steel do
 or hinge for an Army ground vehicle. The materials example will document 
 ways and means to make laser powder bed fusion manufactured Inconel 718 s
 tronger & more ductile than wrought material. \n\nAaron is the Rowlinson 
 Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at th
 e Colorado School of Mines\, as well as the Executive Director of the All

DESCRIPTION:The problem of a beam on an elastic foundation has a long hist
 ory in engineering mechanics.  Its deformation and onset of buckling beha
 vior have been employed as a surrogate for understanding an extensive lis
 t of technologically important applications\, including sun-kinking of ra
 ilroads\, pipeline transportation engineering\, and thin films on hard or
  soft substrates in microelectronic and biological applications.  Despite
  this history\, the global bifurcation behavior of the problem has not be
 en fully explored.  Indeed\, the complexity of the equilibrium solution s
 et will come as a surprise to many practicing and research engineers.\n\n
 Ryan S. Elliott received his B.S. in Engineering Mechanics from Michigan 
 State University\, East Lansing. He received a M.S.E. in Aerospace Engine
 ering\, a M.S. in Mathematics\, and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering and 
 ScientiÂ¿c Computing\, all from The University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. In
  2004 he was a Research Fellow at The University of Michigan. Elliott was
  appointed\, as an Assistant Professor\, in January 2005 to the faculty o
 f the Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics Department at The University of
  Minnesota\, Minneapolis. In 2011 he was promoted to Associate Professor 
 with tenure and to Professor in 2018. In 2010 he held the position of Vis

DESCRIPTION:The application domain of the work described in this talk is t
 he near-to-far-future airspace\, where the projected density and heteroge
 neity of autonomous participants\, including non-cooperative agents\, com
 bine to increase system complexity and uncertainty\, with ensuing threats
  to safety. Given the increased complexity\, control of airspace will hav
 e to transition to human-machine teams\, with ever rising authority of au
 tonomous systems (AS). The growing use of AS leads to a potential paradox
 : AS are meant to address system uncertainty\; however\, machine authorit
 y and human-machine interactions are themselves major sources of uncertai
 nty in the system. Because trustworthiness and trust are connected to dec
 ision making\, which\, in turn is an optimization problem\, subject to ex
 pressed and unexpressed constraints\, in this presentation we examine the
  nature of the attendant optimization problems\, discuss some approaches 
 to solutions\, as well as persistent gaps.\n\nDr. Natalia Alexandrov work
 s at the NASA Langley Research Center. Her interests are in multidiscipli
 nary methods for variable-fidelity modeling\, problem synthesis\, design 
 optimization (MDO)\, and control of complex cyber-physical-human systems\
 , including mechanical artifacts and heterogeneous adaptive systems\, suc

DESCRIPTION:In thin-film organic optoelectronic devices\, manipulation of 
 light below the diffraction limit in a two-dimensional plane is important
  for efficient light utilization within the semiconductor active layer. T
 wo dimensional plasmonic surfaces are promising materials for this purpos
 e because of their thinness and their ability to localize the electric fi
 eld of light at their surface. In this talk\, our work on improving light
  trapping and light extraction in organic semiconductor thin films using 
 plasmonic surfaces will be presented. Optical phenomena\, such as absorpt
 ion induced scattering\, out-of-plane waveguiding and morphology-dependen
 t surface plasmon outcoupling\, are identified due to exciton-plasmon cou
 pling between the organic semiconductor and the metasurface. Interactions
  between localized and propagating surface plasmon polaritons and the exc
 itonic transitions of a variety of organic and organometallic materials w
 ill be discussed and ways in which these interactions may be optimized fo
 r particular thin-film optoelectronic applications will be presented.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Genome editing tools have high potential to directly fix or di
 srupt gene mutations responsible for a wide variety of diseases. Developi
 ng safe and effective therapies using in vivo somatic genome editing\, ho
 wever\, faces a number of challenges including efficient delivery\, manuf
 acturing at scale\, and determination of unintended off-target effects in
  relevant biological systems. \n\nWe have developed new approaches to inf
 orm first-in-human studies that combine patient-derived\, induced pluripo
 tent stem cell models with new delivery nanocarriers and computational mo
 dels. Our results indicate that mutation-specific\, CRISPR-Cas9 genome ed
 itors can be designed to efficiently target mutant alleles without substa
 ntial off-target effects. Patients who are non-responders to frontline ge
 ne augmentation therapies are likely to be good candidates for such gene 
 editing approaches. Further\, tailored polymeric nanoparticles can effici
 ently deliver these editors\, simplifying manufacturing by avoiding viral
  vectors. \n\nFinally\, computational models for in vivo somatic editing\
 , grounded in empirical data from in vitro models and delivery studies\, 
 indicate that injectable off-the-shelf nonviral genome editors can be eff
 icacious. Applications of these tools will be described for inherited ocu
 lar disorders in particular and are likely generalizable to many rare dis
 orders.

DESCRIPTION:Conventional top-down nanofabrication\, over the last six deca
 des\, has enabled almost all the complex electronic\, optical and micro-f
 luidic devices that form the foundation of our society. Parallel efforts\
 , exploring bottom-up self-assembly processes\, have also enabled design 
 and synthesis of structures like quantum dots\, carbon nanotubes and uniq
 ue bio-molecules that possess technologically relevant proper- ties unach
 ievable top-down. While both these approaches have independently matured\
 , ongoing efforts to create "hybrid nanostructures" combining both strate
 gies\, has been fraught with technical challenges. The main roadblock is 
 the absence of a scalable method to deterministically organize components
  built bottom-up within top-down nanofabricated structures.\n\nAshwin Gop
 inath joined MIT in Jan 2019 as an assistant professor in the Mechanical 
 engineering department where his lab is working on projects at the inters
 ection of molecular self-assembly\, surface- chemistry\, top-down nanofab
 rication and synthetic biology. Dr. Gopinath got his Phd in electrical en
 gineering from Boston University\, in 2010\, for his work on understandin
 g light transport in disordered media. Subsequently\, he was a senior res

DESCRIPTION:Alkali-metal hexathiohypodiphosphate materials Li4P2S6 and Na4
 P2S6 and their alloys are of interest to the effort of developing all sol
 id state batteries. While Li4P2S6 has been identified as an unwanted deco
 mposition product in the preparation of lithium thiophosphate electrolyte
 s with very poor ionic conductivity\, Na4P2S6 appears to be a competitive
  electrolyte for sodium ion batteries. Recent experiments have provided n
 ew structural and electro-chemical results which prompt a reexamination o
 f previous computational studies on these materials and also prompt an in
 vestigation of their alloys\, resulting in the prediction of a new promis
 ing Na ion electrolyte having the composition Li2Na2P2S6. This talk is la
 rgely based on the work of WFU graduate student Yan Li with experimental 
 results from Dr. Zachary Hood from MIT and was recently reported at the 2
 36th Meeting of the Electro-chemical Society.\n\nDr. Natalie Holzwarth is
  a professor in the Department of Physics at Wake Forest University. She 
 obtained her bachelor of science in chemical physics at MIT and her PhD i
 n physics from the University of Chicago. Her postdoctoral appointments i
 nclude the University of Toronto\, the University of Pennsylvania\, and E

DESCRIPTION:The development of renewable energy technologies and next-gene
 ration optoelectronic devices relies on the secured supply of critical el
 ements (such as lithium and rare earth element). Traditional mining and s
 eparation methods are disruptive to the environment\, consume large quant
 ities of harsh chemicals\, and are unable to access dilute resources due 
 to low elemental selectivity. Therefore\, the invention of new separation
  methods and the fundamental understanding of the separation processes ar
 e crucial to realizing sustainable mining while broadening minable resour
 ces. In this talk\, I will first introduce a platform method\, electroche
 mical intercalation\, for selective ion separation using lithium extracti
 on as an example. I will explain the different roles of\nmajor ions (Na+/
 Mg2+/K+/Ca2+) in the competition with Li+ and discuss strategies to promo
 te lithium intercalation during co-intercalation by materials design. In 
 the second part\, I will introduce how we construct 2D channels to probe 
 the water and ion transport behavior in confinement.

DESCRIPTION:A stream of photons is typically topologically trivial\, never
 theless\, its full-vector nature intrinsically endows light with full cap
 ability of creating and carrying unique symmetry and topology\, especiall
 y non-Hermitian symmetries that cannot be easily implemented in condensed
  matter. Explorations of symmetry and topology on a photonic platform not
  only deepen our understanding of fundamental physics\, but also enable n
 ovel material properties to facilitate technological breakthroughs for ph
 otonic applications. In this seminar\, I will present our recent efforts 
 on investigating symmetry and topological physics for the next generation
  of optical communication and information technology. We demonstrated an 
 orbital angular momentum (OAM) microlaser that structures and twists the 
 lasing radiation at the microscale\, which can provide an additional OAM-
 based information dimension to meet the growing demand for information ca
 pacity. By strategically interfacing non-Hermitian photonic materials and
  topological physics\, we realized the dynamic control of robust topologi
 cal transmission links of light inside the bulk of a photonic topological
  insulator\, routing optical signals in a highly flexible and scalable ma
 nner. Furthermore\, we conducted a supersymmetry-based formalism to achie
 ve higher-dimensional microlaser phased arrays producing high-radiance\, 
 small-divergence laser beams with orders of magnitude enhancement in ener
 gy density. Additionally\, beyond the known quantum symmetry paradigms we
  are exploring new types of light-matter interaction solely governed by n
 on-Hermiticity of the system\, arising from the first-principle electroma
 gnetic design. For example\, our recently discovered photonic active reso
 nances have no counterpart in condensed matter and previously studied pas
 sive photonic systems.

DESCRIPTION:Recent breathtaking advances in machine learning beckon to the
 ir applications in a wide range of real-world autonomous systems. However
 \, for safety-critical settings such as agile robotic control in hazardou
 s environments\, we must confront several key challenges before widesprea
 d deployment. Most importantly\, the learning system must interact with t
 he rest of the autonomous system (e.g.\, highly nonlinear and non-station
 ary dynamics) in a way that safeguards against catastrophic failures with
  formal guarantees. In addition\, from both computational and statistical
  standpoints\, the learning system must incorporate prior knowledge for e
 fficiency and generalizability.\nIn this talk\, I will present progress t
 owards establishing a unified framework that fundamentally connects learn
 ing and control. First\, I motivate the benefit and necessity of such a u
 nified framework by the Neural-Control Family\, a family of nonlinear dee
 p-learning-based control methods with not only stability and robustness g
 uarantees but also new capabilities in agile robotic control. Then I will
  discuss two interfaces between learning and control in the unified frame
 work: (1) meta-adaptive control\, and (2) competitive control.

 l societies. The importance of these fields to the global economy and sec
 urity is very well recognized\, promoting the rapid growth of related tec
 hnologies in the upcoming decades. An arena in which QIC and AI are being
  promoted to play a more significant role in combustion. The fact is that
  combustion provides the largest portion of the energy needs in the world
 \, despite all of the dedicated efforts towards the development of altern
 ative and/or sustainable energy resources. This situation will likely rem
 ain the same within the foreseeable future. This lecture is focused on re
 cent work in which use is made of modern developments in Quantum Computin
 g (QC)\, Deep Learning (DL) & Machine Learning (ML) to tackle some of the
  most challenging problems in modeling and simulation of turbulent scalar
  mixing and reaction.

DESCRIPTION:Assistive robotic technologies-like protheses\, exoskeletons\,
  and semi-autonomous powered wheelchairs-have the potential to meaningful
 ly transform human mobility. Yet\, despite great strides in the developme
 nt of wearable assistive robots over the last several decades\, people ar
 e not widely using these systems in their daily lives. Fundamentally\, we
  do not yet know how to apply robotic assistance to the human body in ord
 er to promote meaningful clinical improvements or achieve targeted physio
 logical goals. To this end\, my work is focused on the design and experim
 ental evaluation of personalized\, adaptive control strategies for assist
 ive robotic devices. In this seminar\, I will present work that advances 
 our understanding of how to provide robotic assistance to users outside t
 he laboratory environment. I will discuss how data-driven modeling and we
 arable sensors can be used to estimate important physiological metrics (e
 .g.\, metabolic cost) outside the lab. Such measurements are necessary fo
 r adaptive control strategies to respond to real-time changes in the user
 's physiology. As an example of a personalized control system\, I will de
 monstrate that exoskeleton users can quickly and precisely identify featu
 res of robotic assistance that they prefer\, and highlight characteristic
 s of user preference that make the design of personalized control systems
  both compelling and challenging. While many assistive robots support use
 rs during walking\, I will also share insights into how these methods may
  be applied to wheeled mobility technologies\, specifically for children 
 with disabilities. Together\, this work supports my future research goal 
 of designing personalized\, adaptive control strategies for wearable assi
 stive robots in order to enable people to meet their goals and achieve fu
 ll participation in their daily lives.

DESCRIPTION:Dynamic control over light has myriad applications from teleco
 mmunications to chemical sensing and therapeutics. Modulating interaction
  of materials with infrared light is useful for energy applications\, lik
 e smart windows and active cooling\, applications that require materials 
 at scale. I will discuss two distinct strategies for modulating visible a
 nd infrared light with materials crafted from colloidal metal oxide nanoc
 rystals. One approach involves reversible structural reorganization of ge
 l networks\, where plasmonic coupling in the assemblies strongly modifies
  the infrared absorption. Here\, the building blocks are tin-doped indium
  oxide (ITO) nanocrystals with synthetically tunable plasmonic absorption
  spectra. A second approach involves reversible electrochemical charging 
 of transition metal oxide nanocrystals (tungsten and niobium oxides). Cha
 rging results in strong absorption of either visible or infrared light

DESCRIPTION:Compared to other stimuli\, light provides a powerful means to
  control chemical processes because it can be patterned in both time and 
 space with high specificity. In this talk\, novel methods to both manipul
 ate soft material behavior and to enable fabrication of polymeric materia
 ls with light will be presented. In the first part of the talk\, a novel 
 method to control reversible photoactuation of polymer sheets into shapes
  with specific curvature will be\npresented. We demonstrate that by contr
 olling the spatial absorbance of gold nanoparticles within liquid crystal
  elastomer nanocomposites\, arbitrary photothermal profiles can be prescr
 ibed. Upon illumination with visible light\, these materials buckle out o
 f plane into complex shapes. In combination with theory and finite-elemen
 t models\, we demonstrate the inverse design of these materials for full 
 shape control. In the second part of the talk\, novel\nphotopolymerizatio
 n platforms towards mechanically robust and responsive materials will be 
 discussed. We show that by incorporating dynamic covalent bonds within se
 mi-crystalline photopolymers\, novel materials that can be reconfigured o
 ver their lifetime are realized. Finally\, incorporation of these materia
 ls with digital light projection (DLP) 3D printing is shown to enable the
  fabrication of high-performance constructs that are amenable to full rec
 ycling andrepolymerization.

DESCRIPTION:Traditional rigid robots are precise (low error tolerance)\, r
 igid (non-deformable)\, and "cold" (non-responsive to external environmen
 t). By contrast\, soft robots are flexible (high tolerance for adaptively
 )\, soft (highly deformable for safe interaction)\, and smart (embodied s
 tructure and materials intelligence). Soft robotics opens a new avenue fo
 r renovating traditional robotic designs\, which has recently attracted g
 rowing interest from the broad communities of materials\, mechanics\, sen
 sing\, robotics\, dynamics\, control\, and computer science.\nIn this tal
 k\, I will discuss our recent work in embodying mechanical intelligence o
 f structural designs and/or materials intelligence of soft active materia
 ls in soft robotics\, for achieving delicacy in manipulation\, high speed
  in locomotion\, and autonomy and intelligence. I will first talk about u
 tilizing the ancient paper cutting art of kirigami for programming 3D cur
 ved shapeshifting via geometric mechanics guided design\, as well as its 
 application in nondestructive and delicate grasping. Then\, I will discus
 s how to leverage bistable and multistable structures for achieving high-
 speed locomotion in soft mobile robots including running and swimming. Fi
 nally\, I will discuss an example of integrating structural designs with 
 soft active materials for achieving autonomy and intelligence in soft rob
 ots.
