DESCRIPTION:In his first weeks in office\, U.S. President Donald Trump has
taken several steps to signal a dramatic shift in U.S. participation in
global health programs around the world. In addition to ordering the U.S.
to withdraw from the World Health Organization and global agreements to
mitigate climate change and prevent future pandemics\, the administration
issued a pause on all foreign aid\, which has created uncertainty about
the short- and long-term future of programs such as PEPFAR\, the Presiden
t's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief\, which provides access to lifesaving
HIV medications for millions of people around the world.\n\nThis Think Gl
obal panel will explore the implications of these actions and the changin
g landscape of global cooperation on public health. Moderated by DGHI dir
ector Chris Beyrer\, M.D.\, the panel features experts on global health p
olicy and financing\, as well as researchers who will speak to the on-the
-ground impact of programs such as PEPFAR.

DESCRIPTION:Antimicrobial resistance\, or AMR\, is the natural process by
which viruses\, bacteria and other microbes grow resistant to the drugs d
eveloped to act against them\, making previously treatable infections new
ly dangerous. In recent years\, overuse of antibiotics in humans\, animal
s and plants has accelerated the evolution of so-called superbugs\, inclu
ding drug-resistant staph bacteria and forms of malaria and tuberculosis
that evade current treatments. AMR's impact is most pronounced in poor co
untries and communities\, which often lack the resources to effectively t
rack resistance and control antibiotic use. \n\nThis Think Global panel w
ill explore the root causes of antimicrobial resistance\, as well as the
tools and strategies that can be deployed to prevent it\, especially in l
ow-income settings. Panelists will discuss the role of AMR surveillance\,
faster diagnosis of infectious diseases to prevent unnecessary use of an
tibiotics\, and antibiotic use in agriculture.

DESCRIPTION:Globally there are rising populations of persons experiencing
noncommunicable disease and injuries. An estimated 1.3 billion persons li
ve with disability. Rehabilitation services address patient needs to opt
imize function and manage disability. Multiple international health organ
izations have calls-to-action to address global health system strengtheni
ng\, including the World Health Organization (WHO) Rehabilitation 2030.
\n\nDuke Global Neurosurgery & Neurology was established in 2014 to suppo
rt neurosurgical expansion in Uganda. Surgical and rehabilitation systems
face similar disparities in workforce\, infrastructure\, equipments\, an
d practice guidelines. When these services are strengthened in silo\, pat
ient care remains at a loss.\n\nNeurosurgery and neurorehabilitation are
prime examples of services that must exist in tandem to optimize patient
outcomes. In 2020\, Duke Global Neurosurgery & Neurology extended their e
fforts to support increasing capacity for neurorehabilitation in Uganda.
A panel of providers from the United States and Uganda will reflect on th
e experience of combining efforts and future visions for partnership.

DESCRIPTION:A decade ago\, an outbreak of Zika virus in northeastern Brazi
l spurred an international public health emergency. Zika's urgency came i
n large part from its link to congenital malformations in thousands of ba
bies born across the Americas\, many of whom have grown up with multiple
disabilities. In the years since the outbreak\, affected families in Braz
il\, most of whom are racially and economically marginalized\, have been
working to forge infrastructures of care and fighting for health justice
for their children. In this Think Global event\, medical anthropologist
Eliza Williamson\, PhD\, will discuss insights from ten years of research
on lived experiences of disability and caregiving in the aftermath of th
 e Zika crisis in Bahia\, Brazil. DGHI professors Harris Solomon\, PhD\, M
PH\, and Aunchalee Palmquist\, PhD will provide comments and lead a discu
ssion on the importance of ethnographic research for global health equity
 .
