DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest in the 'Exercise and the Brain' sy
mposium. We have reached capacity and registration is now closed. If yo
u are interested in attending\, please contact the organizers at the emai
l addresses below and we will let you know if additional space becomes av
ailable.\n\nPhysical exercise has emerged as a powerful strategy for prom
oting and maintaining brain health and resilience throughout the lifespan
and for staving off the cognitive dysfunction associated with neurologic
al and neurodegenerative diseases and brain injury. Moreover\, recent adv
ances are identifying molecular mechanisms that mediate these salutary ef
fects\, providing increasing clinical evidence for the efficacy of this a
pproach in humans\, and devising novel therapeutic strategies that includ
e exercise as a key component for treating neurological conditions. \n\nT
his interdisciplinary symposium will highlight recent advances in our und
erstanding of the impact of physical activity and exercise on brain funct
ion and health and will explore key basic and clinical research\, transla
tional implementation\, and policy issues in this emerging field. Speaker
s will include Michelle Voss (University of Iowa)\, Henriette van Praag (
NIH/NIA)\, Laura Baker (Wake Forest University)\, Monika Fleshner (Univer
sity of Colorado)\, and Duke investigators.\n\nContacts: Elizabeth A. Fin

DESCRIPTION:Through the efforts of global health organizations worldwide\,
more than one billion people - the majority of whom live in extreme pove
rty -- are receiving essential medicines for neglected tropical diseases
such as intestinal worm infections\, schistosomiasis\, elephantiasis\, ri
ver blindness and others. This progress comes as many counter forces\, in
cluding political conflict\, shifting poverty and climate change\, are ac
celerating the spread of these and other tropical diseases into the Middl
e East and parts of the southern United States and Europe. Among those fo
rces is a novel threat: the emergence of the anti-vaccine movement\, whic
h began in the United States and Europe but is gaining ground to parts of
the world where tropical diseases are most prevalent. Dr. Hotez will cal
l for the scientific community to fight back against anti-vaccine communi
ties through increased public engagement\, a concept he calls "Science Ti
kkun."\n\nA reception with light refreshments will be held at 3:30pm. The
lecture will begin at 4:00pm.\n\nThis annual lecture\, is supported by T
he Victor J. Dzau Global Health Lecture Fund\, established by Dr. Dzau in
2017\, as part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Global Health Matc
 hing Grant.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of a powerful new documentary based on
David Barton Smith's book The Power to Heal: Civil Rights\, Medicare and
the Struggle to Transform America's Health Care System (2016). \n\nThe P
ower to Heal\, premiering on PBS later this spring\, portrays a poignant
chapter in the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to h
ealthcare for all Americans. Central to the story is a tale of how a new
national program\, Medicare\, was used to mount a dramatic\, coordinated
effort that desegregated thousands of hospitals across the country in a m
atter of months. Using Medicare dollars\, civil rights activists pressed
and worked with the federal government to achieve health care justice fo
r African Americans.\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discuss
ion featuring David Barton Smith\, PhD\, C. Eileen Watts Welch and Brenda
Armstrong\, MD. The fathers of both Welch and Armstrong played a central
role in the movement to desegregate hospitals first in North Carolina an
d then nationally.\n\nFree and open to the public. Refreshments served.
