DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, we explore the power of synthetic data
in advancing healthcare AI applications\, particularly focusing on longit
udinal imaging\, continual learning\, and federated learning. The talk de
lves into two data synthesis methods: the diffusion model\, a fine-graine
 d approach\, and datasets distillation\, a coarse approach. First\, I wil
l begin by introducing our novel diffusion model-based method for longitu
dinal image synthesis\, which has shown great promise in understanding br
ain aging through the generation of spatial-temporal data. This innovativ
e technique allows for the efficient analysis of brain development and de
generation over time. Next\, I will discuss the use of data distillation
to enhance the performance of continual learning and federated learning.
These learning paradigms address critical challenges in modern healthcare
\, such as data privacy constraints. Data distillation helps mitigate the
catastrophic forgetting issue in continual learning and tackles the hete
rogeneity issue in federated learning\, enabling more effective and adapt
ive AI solutions in healthcare. Through the use of synthetic data and cut
ting-edge AI methodologies\, this presentation demonstrates the potential
to advance healthcare by providing improved understanding\, and diagnosi
s for patients\, fostering collaboration\, and ultimately improving patie
nt outcomes. \n\n \nThis session is a part of the monthly seminar series
organized by Spark: AI Health Initiative for Medical Imaging. The seminar
will highlight outstanding work in medical imaging at Duke and beyond. T
he seminar recordings will be publicly available. \n \n\nThe Spark initia
tive focuses on development\, validation\, and clinical implementation of
artificial intelligence algorithms for broadly understood medical imagin
g by bringing together the technical and clinical expertise across Duke c
ampus. For more information please contact Dr. Maciej Mazurowski (maciej.

DESCRIPTION:With the explosion of interest in healthcare applications of A
I and machine learning\, health systems are increasingly implementing cli
nical algorithms intended to benefit patient care and reduce costs. Integ
ration with clinical care also brings risks\, including the potential for
biased algorithms to automate and entrench existing health disparities.
In this 1-hour seminar\, we will share examples of bias in healthcare alg
orithms\, discuss ways to assess bias potential across the modeling lifec
ycle\, and offer strategies for mitigation. We will also consider how bia
s assessment fits into the algorithmic governance framework at Duke Healt
 h. \n\n    \n\nPlease join us for this lunchtime virtual seminar. The pr
esentation will be accessible to a broad audience\, including those with
no prior background in health data science or artificial intelligence.

DESCRIPTION:The beginning of this decade has witnessed the emergence of ac
cess to low earth orbit--and beyond\, for a wider array of government and
private sector actors than anytime in human history. While this modern s
pace renaissance has seen the promise of multi-sectoral commercial activi
ties in orbit become reality\, underdeveloped regulatory regimes and norm
s throughout the space economy have resulted in challenges for space-focu
sed diplomats and policymakers across a wide array of fields. There is an
urgent need to set global norms for satellite-based telecommunications o
perations to prevent accidents and security incidents that could impact t
he daily lives of populations back on Earth's surface.\n\nPlease join the
Duke University Rethinking Diplomacy Program Space Diplomacy Lab (SDL) t
eam for a timely conversation with Jaisha Wray\, a career policy expert a
nd advisor on space policy\, cybersecurity\, and telecommunications curre
ntly serving as an Associate Administrator for International Affairs at t
he Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information A
dministration (NTIA). As former Director for International Cyber Policy i
n the Cybersecurity Directorate of the National Security Council\, Ms. Wr
ay was responsible for the U.S. strategy on 5G technology and cybersecuri
ty cooperation with partners and allies. She also led the development of
Space Policy Directive-5: the Nation's first comprehensive cybersecurity
policy for space systems.\n\nThe discussion will take place in dialogue w
ith members of the Duke University Rethinking Diplomacy Program - Space D
iplomacy Lab (SDL) team and Duke students\, moderated by lab co-founders
Dr. Giovanni Zanalda and Dr. Benjamin L. Schmitt.\n\nThe Rethinking Diplo
macy Program is supported by a grant from the Josiah Charles Trent Memori

DESCRIPTION:In July\, 2020\, just a few months into the COVID-19 pandemic\
, the CDC funded the Snowball study to test an approach for more efficien
tly identifying and contacting people in Durham\, NC who may be at risk o
f infection. The study deployed respondent-driven sampling methods\, in w
hich individuals infected with COVID-19 serve as seed cases and recruit t
heir own social contacts for testing and enrollment in the study. To oper
ationalize this approach\, we built a cloud-based platform that integrate
s with the Duke Health electronic health record for case ascertainment an
d with the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) application for elec
tronic consent and collection of a social contact survey. The platform ge
nerates unique coupons that participants validate to enroll in the study
and that are used to track all of the links between seeds and multiple wa
ves of peer participants. The Snowball study tested novel methods of cont
act tracing as well as conducting clinical research and in this seminar w
e will describe the design of the platform and share results from the stu
dy. \n\n   \n\nPlease join us for this afternoon virtual seminar. The p
resentation will be accessible to a broad audience\, including those with
no prior background in health data science or artificial intelligence.

DESCRIPTION:The Epilepsy Bioinformatics Study for Antiepileptogenic Therap
y (EpiBioS4Rx) is a multi-site\, international collaboration that aims to
investigate the multifactorial processes underlying the development of e
pilepsy after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study involves a parallel
investigation in both humans and animal models and includes the collecti
on of multimodal data such as MRI\, EEG\, and blood samples. The developm
ent of epilepsy after TBI is a complex phenomenon that spans multiple mod
alities\, and a comprehensive understanding of its underlying biological
mechanisms is essential for the development of effective treatments. To t
his end\, we have established a centralized data archive that standardize
s data and provides tools for searching\, viewing\, annotating\, and anal
yzing them. This archive includes data generated from multicenter preclin
ical trials\, clinical sites\, and various laboratories in different form
ats. We use machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) techni
ques to analyze large-scale\, multimodal datasets and identify complex pa
tterns that may not be apparent through traditional statistical methods.
By integrating these cutting-edge analytical approaches with our data arc
hive\, we aim to accelerate progress towards the development of effective
treatments for post-traumatic epilepsy. In addition to this EpiBioS4Rx a
rchive\, we have also developed the Data Archive for the BRAIN Initiative
(DABI) and the COVID-19 Data Archive (COVID-ARC) to facilitate research
in related areas and foster collaboration among researchers worldwide.

DESCRIPTION:The application of artificial intelligence in health settings
holds great potential\, but there are many considerations and concerns fo
r the safe and responsible integration of these powerful methods. In this
one-hour virtual seminar\, we'll discuss these considerations with 2 exp
erts: Dr. Tcheng\, who is an interventional cardiologist and clinical inf
ormaticist\; and Dr. Carlson\, who is a quantitative and machine learning
expert\; and Dr. Sperling\, who is an expert in evaluation and applied/c
ommunity-engaged research methods. Through their complementary areas of
expertise\, we'll explore perspectives on the current state and future de
velopment of ethics and safety in cutting-edge AI methods and application
s\, with a particular focus on health and clinical settings.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Laurence Hurst\, Professor of
Evolutionary Genetics and Director of The Milner Centre for Evolution at
the University of Bath.\n\nKnowing what is evolutionarily functional in t
he genome is important for diagnostics (which mutations might cause disea
se) and for new modes of therapy (can I engineer a replacement gene\, whe
re should I put a replacement gene). In this talk I'll look at how unders
tanding the evolution of genes at the synonymous sites (ones at which mut
ations don't alter the amino acid encoded) can enable better understandin
g of which mutations are functional\, why they cause disease (despite bei
ng "silent") and enable expression of genes for gene therapy that have ot
herwise proven hard to express.\n\nClick "More Event Information" below t
o register.\n\nAttendees are encouraged to read Mordstein et al. (2020)\,
"Codon usage and splicing jointly influence mRNA localization" (https://
 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7181179/)\, and Savissar & Hurst (20
18)\, "Exonic splice regulation imposes strong selection at synonymous si
 tes" (https://genome.cshlp.org/content/28/10/1442.full).

how to identify stress reactions in yourself and others\, reduce the ris
k for stress injury\, and promote coping and resilience among individuals
and groups in social\, occupational\, and academic settings.\n\nThe over
arching aim of Stress First Aid (SFA) is to identify and mitigate the neg
ative impacts of stress before they impair health and well-being. Stress
First Aid is a peer support training designed to provide participants wit
h a tool kit on how to perform a timely safety assessment and response wh
en they suspect a co-worker or peer needs support. SFA trains peers to re
cognize and communicate about suspected psychological injuries with indiv
iduals with the goals of preserving lives\, preventing further harm\, and
promoting recovery. View workbook.\n\nThese training sessions will requi

DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, particularly thanks to the adva
nces of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) in recent years\, ho
lds tremendous promise and potential for enhancing clinical decision supp
ort in healthcare. From disease diagnosis to prognosis to treatment plan
ning to patient triaging\, AI-driven clinical decision support across the
entire clinical workflow can great improve the accuracy\, consistency\,
and speed with which clinicians can better serve their patients for great
er quality of care. However\, widespread adoption of AI in healthcare ha
s remained limited despite these advances\, with one of the biggest chall
enges being trust in such AI systems. Thankfully\, significant progress
and advances have been made towards transparency- and trust-centric desig
n\, and in this seminar I will be discussing recent developments in quant
itative explainable AI\, trust quantification\, improvements in data\, an
d best practices and ethical considerations for trusted AI\, as well as e
xample use uses of how this enables the building of trusted AI solutions
for healthcare. \n  \nThis session is a part of the monthly seminar serie
s organized by Spark: AI Health Initiative for Medical Imaging. The semin
ar will highlight outstanding work in medical imaging at Duke and beyond.
The seminar recordings will be publicly available. \n \nThe Spark initia
tive focuses on development\, validation\, and clinical implementation of
artificial intelligence algorithms for broadly understood medical imagin
g by bringing together the technical and clinical expertise across Duke c
ampus. For more information please contact Dr. Maciej Mazurowski (maciej.

DESCRIPTION:The application of artificial intelligence in healthcare requi
res a team science approach. A diverse set of expertise\, perspectives an
d lived experiences are required to understand the various ways bias lurk
s in the data - from bias introduced by sampling selection (who made it t
o the database\, who didn't\, and what's the impact on downstream models)
\, variation in the frequency of measurement that is not explained by the
disease or patient phenotype (aka "shortcut" features in medical images)
\, technology that performs differently across patient subgroups (e.g. pu
lse oximetry\, wearable sensors optimized around fit individuals)\, etc.
Data bias is the roadblock to realizing the promise of machine learning.
Algorithmic bias is not just about evaluating model performance across pa
tient subgroups post hoc. The goal is to ascertain that the model does no
t learn from features that should not affect decision making. Offering ch
emotherapy should not depend on whether a patient is on Medicaid or has a
private insurance\, predicting job performance should not be informed by
the gender of the applicant\, optimizing treatment for sepsis should be
not be confounded by the use of infrared sensing technology. This is much
easier said than done because of the discovery that computers can easily
learn sensitive attributes that the human eye does not see. Using real w

DESCRIPTION:Longitudinal digital health studies combine information from d
igital devices\, such as commercial wearable devices\, and patient-report
ed data\, such as surveys\, from participants. While the ubiquitous adopt
ion of smartphones and access to the internet supports the development of
large-scale and distributed digital health studies\, there are challenge
s in collecting representative data as a result of low adherence to\, eng
agement with\, and regularity of performing study tasks such as filling o
ut surveys and charging and wearing devices. These challenges may result
in a study population that is not representative of the general populatio
n or the population group of interest. Artificial Intelligence tools deve
loped based on a non-representative population have a higher chance to fa
il to generalize in the real-world deployment of such technologies and ma
y not work for underrepresented and underserved communities. In this semi
nar\, the speaker will share his research group's experience in conductin
g longitudinal digital health studies for COVID-19 monitoring\, the chall
enges the researchers faced to collect data from a representative populat
ion\, and how his team developed a guideline to mitigate demographic imba
lance in bring-your-own-device (BYOD) design-based digital health studies
. Furthermore\, the speaker will also share how his team developed a mach
ine learning method based intelligent allocation method for COVID-19 diag
nostic testing in a resource-limited setting (when we have limited diagno
stic tests\, like the earlier phase of the pandemic and onset of new vari
ants) using wearable and survey data collected during the longitudinal Co
vIdentify study. \n \nPlease join us for this lunchtime virtual seminar
. The presentation will be accessible to a broad audience\, including tho
se with no prior background in health data science or artificial intellig
 ence.
