DESCRIPTION:This seminar will give an overview of a study to develop a nov
 el approach using routinely collected electronic health records (EHRs) da
 ta to improve the prediction of a rare event. To achieve this\, we introd
 uced a conditional multi-label model by merging conditional learning and 
 multi-label methodologies. The conditional learning approach breaks a har
 d task into more manageable pieces in each stage\, and the multi-label ap
 proach utilizes information from related neurodevelopmental conditions to
  learn predictive latent features. The study involved forecasting autism 
 diagnosis by age 5.5 years\, utilizing data from the first 18 months of l
 ife\, and the analysis of feature importance correlations to explore the

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we consider the problem of\nreliable storage of
  quantum information with qubit rate below its von Neumann entropy with c
 ontrolled loss. This requires a transformation of the quantum source stat
 e into a more entangled reconstruction state with smaller entropy.  \nIns
 pired by the duality connections between the data compression  and data t
 ransmission problems in the classical setting\, we propose a new formulat
 ion for the lossy quantum data compression problem. This formulation diff
 ers from the\nexisting quantum rate-distortion theory in two aspects. Fir
 stly\,we require that the reconstruction of the compressed quantum source
  fulfill a nonlocal (global) error constraint as opposed to the sample-wi
 se local entanglement fidelity criterion used in the standard rate-distor
 tion setting. Secondly\, to measure the reconstruction error\, instead of
  a distortion observable\, we employ the notion of a backward quantum cha
 nnel which we refer to as a  `posterior reference\nmap'. This is analogou
 s to the posterior probability studied in  the classical Bayesian framewo
 rk.  \nThis leads to a novel quantum Bayesian perspective for lossy repre
 sentation of quantum information. Using these concepts\, we design a quan
 tum coding scheme consisting of an encoder and a decoder that transforms 
 the source state into an entangled reconstruction state efficiently. We c

DESCRIPTION:Real world data\, such as that from medical claims\, the elect
 ronic health record\, or clinical registries\, are becoming increasingly 
 important in quality improvement and research. Of these\, clinical regist
 ries are unique in containing clinical outcomes data that are manually ab
 stracted from the unstructured portions of the EHR by trained registrars 
 or clinicians. This makes them a rich source of high-quality\, clinical o
 utcomes data with broad secondary use cases including comparative effecti
 veness research\, cohort generation\, and model development. However\, us
 e of clinical registry data is limited by idiosyncrasies in data storage\
 , access\, and governance - resulting in siloed datasets that are cut off
  from the broader health data landscape. Our work aims to unlock the pote
 ntial of patient registries by creating a pilot data mart that links seve
 ral of Duke's clinical registries with existing EHR data. In this session
 \, I will give an overview of Duke's strategy for creating this data mart
 . I will highlight unique challenges we faced\, and design considerations
  employed to address them.

DESCRIPTION:The influence of information technologies such as the telegrap
 h\, personal computers\, the internet\, and artificial intelligence has b
 een profound\, driving significant global economic growth and creating su
 bstantial value. We are now on the brink of another technological revolut
 ion: the advent of quantum computers. Quantum computers leverage the prin
 ciples of quantum physics\, offering two primary advantages-unprecedented
  computing speeds and the ability to solve problems that classical comput
 ers cannot\, particularly in finding optimal Nash equilibrium solutions i
 n non-cooperative games\, which have broad applications in economics and 
 finance. In this context\, we introduce a prototype for a "quantum tradin
 g" platform\, designed to use quantum computing to manage trades as scena
 rios of the Prisoner's Dilemma\, a classic non-cooperative game. Remarkab
 ly\, our findings suggest that the traditional mass-sell market equilibri
 um is replaced by a more advantageous mass-buy market equilibrium when qu
 antum computing is applied. We will explore the potential implications of
  such a quantum trading platform on short selling\, especially in emissio
 ns trading and green markets.

DESCRIPTION:One of the standard arguments for building a quantum computer 
 is that we might profitably use the entanglements between qubits to simul
 ate the correlations between electrons and thus solve a myriad of importa
 nt chemical and material design problems. While this is surely an elegant
  and effective one-line funding justification\, the devil is very much in
  the details. This talk will provide an overview of some significant prog
 ress made over the last five years in this area by both the field and in 
 a few examples by the team I work with at QC Ware\, and will also discuss
  some serious challenges that remain for us to achieve practical quantum 
 advantage for quantum chemistry. On the positive side\, some specific top
 ics to be discussed are quantum number preserving gate fabrics that final
 ly provide a clean mapping of electrons to qubits\, quantum symmetry adap
 ted perturbation theory as a desperate riposte to the problem of subtract
 ive cancellation in NISQ algorithms\, and quantum Krylov methods that mig
 ht provide a compelling alternative to the variational quantum eigensolve
 r. On the negative side\, we will look at the relentless progress of clas
 sical quantum chemistry methods for solving the average-case chemical pro
 blem\, the obvious difficulty of parameter optimization in variational qu
 antum algorithms\, and the current state of performance of real hardware 
 experiments. The resultant picture is that quantum chemistry remains a hi
 ghly compelling target for practical quantum advantage\, but that urgent 
 attention is needed to remove some dangerous remaining uncertainties in t
 he field.
