DESCRIPTION:The impact of COVID-19 on education is tangibly felt across th

n\, disruption to free meal and vaccine programs\, risk of increased drop
out rates\, and more. How can we ensure an accelerated recovery that does
n't widen educational attainment -and related power- gaps between the ric
h and the poor\, between boys and girls\, and between the Global North an
d the Global South? Join us for a talk with experts Helen Abadzi (UT Arli
ngton)\, Elin Martínez (Human Rights Watch)\, and Gustavo Payan (DAI/ INE
E)\; moderated by Maya Alkateb-Chami (Columbia). For instructions on acce

DESCRIPTION:As society grapples with an unprecedented pandemic\, the most
vulnerable workers and communities bear the brunt of its immediate and lo
ng-term devastating effects\, even as they provide essential services to
our societies. But can the pandemic also present opportunities to address
market failures and position workers' rights as central to a more sustai
nable\, just\, and resilient economy? Join us for a talk with Anita Ramas
astry (UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights)\, Alison Kiehl Frie
dman (ICAR)\, Kim Cordova (UFCW)\, and Janhavi Dave (Homenet South Asia)\
; moderated by Aminta Ossom (Harvard) and grounded in the experiences of
workers in the food and agricultural sector\, and in the informal economy
. To view the program\, visit tinyurl.com/COVID19JusticeSeries for instru

tional Human Rights Clinic\, Columbia Law School Human Rights Institute\,

DESCRIPTION:As governments respond to the novel coronavirus\, the rights o
f lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people are under
increasing threat. Some face increased risks from stay-at-home orders whe
n home is not a safe environment or when health care discrimination deter
s LGBTI people from seeking COVID-19 treatment. Discriminatory measures t
hat stigmatize and blame LGBTI people for outbreaks as well as government
s' crackdown on LGBTI rights defenders\, heighten vulnerabilities and vio
lence. Instead\, solutions must be found that center the rights of LGBTI
people\, including through economic measures to mitigate the adverse impa
cts of the crisis\, as well as ongoing support services. Join us for a ta
lk with Ymania Brown (ILGA World/PHRI)\, Gloria Careaga (UNAM)\, Victor M
 adrigal-Borloz (U.N. Independent Expert)\, Danilo da Silva (LAMBDA)\, and

DESCRIPTION:The twenty-seven words of the Second Amendment have been the s
ubject of intense debate\, disagreement\, and litigation. Against the bac
kdrop of the hyper-politicized debate over gun rights and regulation\, th
is session\, presented by Duke Law professor Joseph Blocher\, provides a
 hopeful\, "constitutional" alternative. Exploring the history\, meaning\,
and doctrine of the right to keep and bear arms\, it demonstrates that t
he constitution provides a better starting point for the gun debate than
our increasingly polarized gun politics. This event is sponsored by the D

DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 presents major challenges for the US election process
. Measures necessary to protect the public and prevent the spread of the
 virus\, like shelter-in-place orders\, quarantine and self-isolation\, an
d fear of infection will keep many Americans away from polling places in
the fall. In-person voters must navigate lines and indoor voting location
s that traditionally place people in close proximity\, and interact with
high-touch surfaces\, to exercise their right to vote. Poll workers\, who
are traditionally older and therefore more at risk\, are now in short su
pply. The act of voting itself has the ability to spark new rounds of con
tagion. Constructive policy solutions are needed to protect public health
and the right to vote\, especially for members of minority and lower soc
io-economic groups\, who have already been disproportionately affected by
  the pandemic.\nPanelists :\nProfessor Guy-Uriel Charles\, J.D. Edward an

DESCRIPTION:Across the US\, employers are taking steps to bring non-essent
ial employees back into the workplace after shutdowns in response to the
COVID-19 pandemic. This is easier said than done\, as employers encounter
logistical hurdles in planning a safe return to work\, and coronavirus i
nfection rates spike around the country. To enable a successful return to
work\, employers must proceed based on the science of how the virus spre
ads in different work environments\, using policies\, practices\, and pro
cedures carefully crafted to protect worker safety.\nJoin Duke Science &
Society and our panel of experts in a discussion on the risks of spreadin

. M&F was founded in 1907 by a group of nine successful businessmen in Du

DESCRIPTION:Meeting ID: 978-38391211\nContact tracing has become one comm
on practice to monitor and track the transmission of COVID-19 both region
ally and globally. While the practice aims to take care of public health\
, its collection and use of data has still generated debates and concerns
around the question of control\, privacy and market. With collective hea
lth on the one side and privacy protection on the other\, how shall we ba
lance control and care involved in contact tracing? How could we understa
nd its implications and foresee its development? In this workshop we will
explore not only the pros and cons of contact tracing but also the bias
implied in the viral transmission\, the rhetoric of the "super spreader\,
" and the ways through which technology might or might not constitute a m
ore caring future. With the participation of: Mauro Turrini\, sociologis
t of science and medicine at the Institute of Public Goods and Policies (
IPP) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid\; Vincenzo
Pavone\, Director of the Institute of Public Policies (IPP)\, which is p

DESCRIPTION:While today's youth face daunting challenges - from persistent
structural racism to rising inequality and the existential threat of cli
mate change - they are also rising up to tackle these problems through co
llective action\, collaboration\, advocacy\, and new ways of organizing.
Wesley Hogan\, author of the recent book "On the Freedom Side: How Five D
ecades of Youth Activists Have Remixed American History\," has documented
the work and amplified the voices of many of these youth\, including Bla
ck Lives Matter advocates\, people who are engaged in immigrant rights wo
rk\, and water protectors at Standing Rock. Carrying forward the legacy o
f activists from the Civil Rights era like Ella Baker\, this new generati
on of leaders\, many of them women of color\, are fighting for the ideals
of pluralism and self-determination here in the US and globally. Join th
e Hart Leadership Program and POLIS for a conversation with Wesley Hogan\
, who directs Duke's Center for Documentary Studies\, and three activists
  - all with roots in Duke and Sanford - as they share their experiences w
ith activism and organizing.\n\nTo register\, visit this link: https://du
