DESCRIPTION:We will discuss experimental and theoretical progress towards
large-scale error-corrected quantum computation. First\, we report recent
advances in quantum information processing using dynamically reconfigura
ble arrays of neutral atoms. Using this logical processor with various ty
pes of error-correcting codes\, we demonstrate that we can improve logica
l two-qubit gates by increasing code distance\, create logical GHZ states
\, and perform computationally complex quantum simulation of information
scrambling. In performing such circuits\, we observe that the performance
can be substantially improved by accounting for error propagation during
transversal logical entangling gates and decoding the logical qubits joi
ntly. We find that by using this correlated decoding technique and correc
tly handling feedforward operations\, the number of noisy syndrome extrac
tion rounds in universal quantum computation can be reduced from O(d) to
O(1)\, where d is the code distance. These techniques result in new theor
ies of fault-tolerance and in practical reductions to the cost of large-s
cale computation by over an order of magnitude.

DESCRIPTION:Molecules have emerged as powerful instruments for conducting
precise tests of fundamental symmetries\, such as the search for the elec
tron electric dipole moment (eEDM). However\, molecules are generally dif
ficult to trap and cool\, making it challenging to perform narrow linewid
th measurements with long interrogation times without a complicated laser
-cooling setup capable of repumping multiple rovibrational levels. Our ap
proach harnesses molecular ions\, which offer distinct advantages. They c
an be readily stored in ion traps for prolonged durations and sympathetic
ally cooled by laser-cooled atomic ions. High-fidelity coherent manipulat
ions and state readout can be performed quantum logic control via co-trap
ped atomic ions. Notably\, atomic lutetium ions are amenable to direct la
ser cooling\, making them ideal candidates to serve as sympathetic coolan
ts and to form pre-cooled molecular ions. Furthermore\, Lu-176 boasts one
of the largest nuclear electric quadrupole moments of any long-lived iso
tope\, rendering it exceptionally sensitive to the CP-violating nuclear m
agnetic quadrupole moment (nMQM). I will describe how we can harness thes
e properties in molecular ions containing lutetium\, such as LuOH⁺\, to p
robe new physics through the simultaneous investigation of nMQM and eEDM.

DESCRIPTION:ARDS\, pneumonia\, and sepsis are common critical illnesses wi
th high mortality.\n The conditions are overlapping\, and diagnosis\, pro
gnosis and prediction are all challenging. Decades of research has been d
one to try and unravel the heterogeneity and find treatments to improve o
utcomes for these patients\, yet to little effect. Progress is\n hampered
in part by the high acuity and time-sensitive clinical context\, the ple
thora of interventions required for organ support\, limited understanding
of the pathophysiology\, incomplete assessment of molecular data\, and i
ncomplete documentation of clinical\n course - among other things. To fil
l the knowledge gap and provide the foundation for successful interventio
ns in these high mortality conditions\, the APS consortium is generating
the most comprehensive dataset ever to be available. This talk will discu
ss\n the challenges and solutions in designing and implementing this ambi
tious prospective observational cohort study that will deeply phenotype 4
000 patients with serial assessments throughout their clinical course. W
e will also discuss the principles being applied\n to maximize the validi
ty of analyses\, and we will highlight opportunities for ancillary studie
 s.

DESCRIPTION:Our research program investigates quantum models for the simul
ation\, classification\, and prediction of financial time series. The fin
ancial processes: asset prices\, interest rates\, forex rates exhibit com
plex dynamics on different time scales. These processes are partially obse
rvable\, and we identify the underlying internal dynamics through stochas
tic observations. A promising research direction involves using quantum C
ompletely Positive Trace Preserving (CPTP) maps or quantum channels\, as
generative models of partially observable stochastic systems. This approa
ch is motivated by the dual nature of the channel's operator-sum represen
tation. The representation can be interpreted both as a description of un
observable quantum dynamics and as a POVM measurement\, where the outcome
s correspond to specific operators defining the quantum process. To quant
ize classical linear stochastic models like Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) o
r\, more broadly\, Observable Operators Models (OOMs) as quantum channels
\, we map the stochastic vector space and observable operators of the cla
ssical model to the space of density matrices and the corresponding opera
tors of the quantum channel. We refer to these models as "quantum stochas
tic generators". We demonstrate that quantum stochastic generators provid
e a more efficient description of discrete stochastic processes in terms
of state-space complexity compared to classical ones. Specifically\, it i
s shown that for every classical OOM of order n\, there exists a quantum
stochastic generator of order N = √n which generates the same stochastic
process. We propose an efficient parameterization of quantum stochastic g
enerators as unitary circuits with mid-circuit measurements. By utilizing
the space of unitary circuits as a hypothesis space\, we establish a for
mal learning model for the quantum generators. It is demonstrated that th
e landscape of the proposed learning modelis smooth and auto-correlated.
Smooth landscapes enable the implementation of efficient heuristic and gr
adient-based learning algorithms. For instance\, a learning algorithm dev
eloped through hyperparameter-adaptive evolutionary search is discussed.
The algorithm is used for learning of generative models of synthetic and
real-life financial time series. As a future research opportunity we pres
ent several quantum generator architectures that implicitly and explicitl
y model processes with long-term dependencies.

DESCRIPTION:Research in stroke risk prediction and prevention is enhanced
by the inclusion of a broad range of data from different patient cohorts.
Integrating and harmonizing multiple data sources increases generalizabi
lity\, sample size\, and representation of understudied populations-stren
gthening the evidence for the scientific questions being addressed. In an
AI Health Virtual Seminar presented earlier this year\, researchers from
Duke AI Health and the American Heart Association (AHA) shared the open
metadata repository they developed for the harmonization of stroke risk p
rediction variables from four large\, National Institutes of Health (NIH)
-funded cohort studies: REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differ
ences in Stroke)\, FHS (Framingham Heart Study)\, MESA (Multi-Ethnic Stud
y of Atherosclerosis)\, and ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities).\n
\nIn this follow-up seminar\, leading researchers from Duke AI Health an
d AHA will present new methodologies and results from studies that were c
onducted with the harmonized dataset. Chuan Hong\, Assistant Professor of
Biostatistics & Bioinformatics\; Duke University School of Medicine\, wi
ll present a learning network for cohort-to-EHR variable harmonization ba
sed on semantic learning. Pratheek Mallya\, Product Development Manager\,
Data Science\; American Heart Association\, will introduce a technique u
sing natural language processing (NLP) models to automatically harmonize
and standardize variable descriptions from three different stroke data co
horts and compare the performance of the proposed method with a baseline
logistic regression model. Matt Engelhard\, Assistant Professor of Biosta
tistics & Bioinformatics\; Duke University School of Medicine\, will pres
ent an AI model for stroke risk prediction designed to make predictions m
 ore similar.

DESCRIPTION:Quantum simulation is a key near-term application of quantum c
omputing. I will present several recent advancements in quantum simulatio
n techniques and error mitigation. I will discuss error mitigation strate
gies for estimating expectation values of local observables\, where we in
troduce a new Probabilistic Error Cancellation (PEC) estimator leveraging
light-cone structures to drastically reduce sampling overhead. I will al
so describe our 'shaded lightcone' approach\, which combines classical bo
unds on error channel influence on the expectation values to optimize the
  bias-variance trade-off\, achieving up to a two-order-of-magnitude runti
me reduction for circuits like 127-qubit Trotter circuits. Finally\, I wi
ll introduce an algorithm for simulating geometrically local Hamiltonians
under small perturbations using the Magnus expansion in an interaction f
rame\, avoiding the need for ancillary qubits. This algorithm's efficient
computation is guaranteed by the Lieb-Robinson bound\, making it appeali
ng for near-term and early-fault-tolerant quantum devices. This seminar i
s a hybrid event at NC State.

DESCRIPTION:The Myanmar Business Environment Index (MBEI) was launched in
2018 to provide a snapshot of local economic governance and private-secto
r development in Myanmar's states and regions. The original MBEI project
consisted of two nationwide business perception surveys\, conducted in 20
18 and 2020\, and two smaller surveys in 2020 on the impact of Covid-19 o
n businesses. In 2023\, The Asia Foundation used the data from these four
previous surveys as a baseline for the MBEI 2023 interim survey. The 202
3 survey was specifically designed to understand the impact of the 2021 c
oup d'état.\n\nThe MBEI captures key aspects of local economic governance
that businesses are currently facing in Myanmar and provides evidence to
understand how the private sector currently views and interacts with the
de facto authorities and to identify major challenges faced by businesse
 s. Join the authors of the report from Duke University and The Asia Found
ation to learn about the report's findings: Edmund Malesky\, professor of
political economy at Duke\; Amb. Mark McDowell\, country representative
in Myanmar\; Ville Peltovuori\, senior advisor at The Asia Foundation\; a
 nd Anna Bantung-Herrera\, director\, DC office\, The Asia Foundation.\n\n
The Asia Foundation is a nonprofit international development organization
committed to improving lives and expanding opportunities across Asia and
the Pacific. Informed by 70 years of experience and deep local knowledge
\, our work is focused on governance\, climate action\, gender equality\,
education and leadership\, inclusive growth\, and international cooperat
ion. We work in more than 20 countries through our 17 permanent country o
ffices and programs across Asia and the Pacific\, supported by a headquar
ters in San Francisco and an office in Washington\, DC. Our funding comes
from a diverse array of bilateral and multilateral development agencies\
 , foundations\, corporations\, and individuals.

DESCRIPTION:Measurements serve as the basis for evaluation in almost all s
cientific disciplines\, especially in physical sciences\, medical studies

both controversies and appropriate applications of agreement indices. A s

DESCRIPTION:Parameterized quantum circuits serve as ansätze for solving va
riational problems and provide a flexible paradigm for programming near-t
erm quantum computers. Here we discuss three fundamental criteria for thi
s paradigm to be effective: expressibility\, trainability and generalisab
ility. We will introduce these concepts and present recent analytic progr
ess quantifying to what extent these criteria can be achieved. While more
generally applicable\, the discussion will be framed around the example
of trying to variationally learn an unknown quantum process. We will end
with some more open-ended dreaming about the applications of these ideas
for experimental quantum physics and quantum compilation.
