DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract:\n\nThis presentation will discuss how to rec
ognize funding opportunities and identify a variety of different streams
for funding socially impactful informatics projects. Collaborative fundin
g models will be illustrated across three case studies where software pro
ducts were built to 1) address substance use disorder\, 2) assist with em
ployment for people with disabilities\, and 3) improve pre-hospital to ho
spital communications. Lessons learned and a discussion of proven results
will be presented on leveraging internal grants\, family foundation gran
ts\, and other smaller funding sources to becoming multi-year\, multi-mil
 lion-dollar projects.\n\n\n\nInstructor Biosketch:\n\nBenjamin Schooley w

DESCRIPTION:Join Duke's Rethinking Diplomacy Program for a webinar on Tues
 day\, April 25 from 12 noon to 1pm ET\, with Joel Jaeger\, Senior Researc
h Associate at World Resources Institute\, in conversation with the Duke
Rethinking Diplomacy team\, Duke experts and students. \n\nProtecting Ea
rth's environment and building a prosperous\, but more sustainable econom
y has become a priority for most countries in the world. Private enterpri
ses are innovating rapidly\, and with governments committing to greener e
conomies\, the direction of the debate over climate change is evolving. \
n\nWe hear often that the green energy transition has enormous and growin
g potential to address environmental risks while generating wealth in the
U.S. and in the broader global economy. Are these claims realistic? How
far along is the green energy transition? What examples of collaborations
between private sector and national and international diplomacies can be
discussed in preparation for COP 28 in Fall 2023?\n\nAudience members wi
ll have an opportunity to ask questions during the event.\n\nAbout the Sp
eaker: \n\nJoel Jaeger is a Senior Research Associate at the World Resour
ces Institute\, focused on the economics of climate policy and green jobs
. He leads the assessment of global climate progress for the Systems Chan
ge Lab platform and the State of Climate Action report series. Joel led W
RI's global research on a green and inclusive recovery from COVID-19. He
has also co-led the America's New Climate Economy project and an assessme
nt of the job opportunities and challenges of electric vehicles in Michig
an.\n\nAbout the Series: \n\nThis webinar is part of a new RDP series on
climate diplomacy organized in collaboration with Duke University's Nich
 olas Institute for Energy\, Environment & Sustainability\; The James E. R
ogers Energy Access Project\; and Sanford School of Public Policy.\n\nThi
s event is aligned with the goals of The Duke Climate Commitment\, which
unites the university's education\, research\, operations and public serv
ice missions to address the climate crisis.\n\nThe Rethinking Diplomacy P
rogram is supported by a grant from The Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Fou
 ndation Endowment Fund.

DESCRIPTION:By June if not before\, the U.S. Supreme Court will rule on tw
o cases that are expected to directly impact undergraduate and graduate a
dmissions\, as well as other student programs that seek to increase racia
l and ethnic diversity at Ivy+ universities and across the U.S. In these
cases\, the Court is being asked to overrule or further constrain longsta
nding decisions that\, within legal design parameters\, allow institution
s of higher education to consider applicants' race in holistic admissions
review to create diverse learning communities that benefit all students.
\n\nA range of outcomes is possible\, and the specifics can't be predicte
 d. However\, the Court's decisions are expected to increase the challeng
es to achieving diversity aims of FAN members. Without denying the likely
impacts\, it will be extremely important not to over- or underreact to t
he decisions. For example\, different legal regimes apply to race-conscio
us student and faculty diversity initiatives\; and the decisions will onl
y be binding in the student context. Even in the student context\, avenue
s will remain to advance racial and ethnic diversity.\n\nJamie Lewis Keit
h will share her decades of experience in effective and legally sustainab
le strategies to advance diversity in higher education with FAN members.
Keith will lead a "can do" workshop for Ivy+ faculty\, department leaders
and college administrators committed to advancing racial and other forms
of diversity in their departments\, disciplines and universities. Focusi
ng on graduate education and faculty hiring\, in particular\, this progra
m will answer:\n\n- What are the distinctions between how race/ethnicity
can be considered in admissions and other student programs versus faculty
and postdoc hiring?\n\n- In the face of strong legal and political headw
inds\, what tools will likely remain available and effective-whatever the
Supreme Court decides-to advance racial diversity at the department and
school/college level?\n\n- How can faculty identify and remove the barrie
rs to considering race in their policies and practices?\n\n- What are the
opportunities to inspire leadership and evolve thinking by faculty about
priorities and definitions of "merit"?\n\nThis workshop will offer many
opportunities for participants to engage Keith and to meet in small group
s with faculty from similar university settings.

DESCRIPTION:The 2020s will be remembered for a wide array of global challe
nges and opportunities related to rapid\, transformational technology dev
elopment. Among those major transformations has been the emergence of a w
ide array of space technologies\, open to a wider number of international
actors than any time in human history. This commercial space revolution
has evolved along with a resurgence of great power competition and geopol
itical rivalries. An era of urgent\, anticipatory space diplomacy has arr
ived.\n\nQuestions abound: Will the Russian Federation become the world's
first "former space power"? Will cooperation or competition define space
relations between Washington and Beijing? How will emerging space techno
logies transform the way that international diplomacy and sanctions enfor
cement are conducted? How can international organizations address the urg
ent need for norms and regulations between governments and private sector
actors operating spacecraft in low earth orbit and beyond? Will the worl
d be able to avoid a future weaponization of outer space\, ensuring a saf
e and sustainable future of planet?\n\nTo address these questions and mor
e\, the Duke University Space Diplomacy Lab is proud to welcome Mai'a K.
Davis Cross\, the Dean's Professor of Political Science\, International A
ffairs\, and Diplomacy\, and Director of the Center for International Aff
airs and World Cultures at Northeastern University.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract\nCurrent guidelines do not address whether to
initiate a statin in older adults for primary prevention of cardiovascul
ar disease\, and there are also questions about whether statins may help
to preserve or benefit cognitive and physical function. The PRagmatic EVa
luation of evENTs And Benefits of Lipid-lowering in oldEr adults (PREVENT
ABLE) is a double-blind\, placebo-controlled randomized pragmatic clinica
l trial funded by the National Institute on Aging and National Heart\, Lu
ng\, and Blood Institute that began recruitment in September 2020. It wil
l compare high-intensity statin therapy (atorvastatin 40 mg) with placebo
in 20\,000 community-dwelling adults aged ≥75 years without cardiovascul
ar disease\, disability\, or dementia. Sites for the trial come from the
National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet)\, the Veter
ans Affairs system\, and independent health systems. The goal of this tal
k is to review a number of the informatics challenges PREVENTABLE has fac
ed to date\, including the unique complexities of pragmatic research in o
lder adults\, needs for local adaptation of processes for recruitment and
patient outreach\, data harmonization and standardization\, and the infl
uence of pragmatic outcome ascertainment on plans for statistical monitor

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract\nHistoric legislation with the Infrastructure
and Jobs Act\, the CHIPS Act\, and the Inflation Reduction Act meant 202
2 was a landmark year for climate policy. With this foundation\, what lie
s ahead? Director of the Heat Policy Innovation Hub from Duke University'
s Nicholas Institute for Energy\, Environment & Sustainability\, Dr. Ashl
ey Ward\, will talk about the state of climate policy\, challenges and op
portunities that lie ahead\, and what this extreme heat season might mean
  for both.\n\nInstructors Biosketch\nDr. Ashley Ward is a climate-health
and resilience professional. Her career has focused on engaging communiti
es to identify and address issues related to climate change\, and helping
communities develop long-term\, sustainable strategies relevant to their
community needs. Her previous work with NOAA's Carolinas RISA team conne
cted rural and urban communities and policy-decision makers with relevant
climate and health data\, particularly related to vulnerabilities and im
pacts. Engagement with communities across the Carolinas revealed a knowle
dge and access gap in climate data\, wherein many communities did not hav
e the necessary data and expertise to inform decision-making\, planning\,
and preparedness. Ashley has since continued to bridge the gap between s
cience\, data\, policy\, and community as the Director of the Heat Policy
Innovation Hub at Duke's Nicholas Institute for Energy\, Environment & S
ustainability. In this role\, she works with communities\, public agencie
s\, and policymakers to create and inform effective policy solutions to d
ifficult environmental challenges like extreme heat. In addition to work
on the health impacts of climate extremes\, Ashley has worked with the Wa
ter Policy Program\, helping public agencies modernize their water data i
nfrastructure to better manage water resources. On this team\, Ashley lea
ds stakeholder and policy engagement\, pilot programs\, and the developme
nt of the Technology Adoption Program (TAP) designed to guide public agen
cies through the organizational and behavioral changes needed to moderniz

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract \nMultimorbidity\, characterized as the nonra
ndom co-occurrence of multiple health conditions in an individual\, is pr
evalent and significantly influences health outcomes. Insight into diseas
e-disease interactions and the underlying mechanisms of multimorbidity ca
n inform new opportunities for the development of novel preventative stra
 tegies\, interventions\, and personalized treatments. Large-scale electro
nic health record (EHR) systems provide an extensive real-world patient d
ata source for evaluating disease multimorbidities\, yet concerns about d
ata accuracy\, completeness\, and interoperability across institutions pe
rsist. In our study\, we utilized multivariate analysis and network model
s to investigate disease multimorbidities across different EHR systems. O
ur findings demonstrate reasonably consistent multimorbidity patterns acr
oss systems when using ICD codes\, effectively capturing recognized disea
se clusters\, genetic correlations\, causal relationships\, and potential
ly new discoveries. To assist a broader range of researchers in performin
g complex data analysis\, we proposed an interactive visualization soluti
on for in-depth exploration of the comprehensive multimorbidity knowledge
base constructed across multiple systems. A case study will further illu
strate the value of cross-institutional discovery in EHR-based data resea
rch\, promoting the advancement of personalized medicine.\n\nInstructors

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract \nDeep learning has achieved remarkable succe
ss in the field of medical time series analysis. However\, the effectiven
ess of advanced models in this domain heavily relies on the availability
of high-quality labels\, which are not only labor-intensive to obtain but
also specific to the medical domain and often in short supply. To addres
s these challenges\, self-supervised contrastive learning has emerged as
a promising approach\, capitalizing on the inherent consistency present w
 ithin unlabeled data.\n\nAdapting self-supervised contrastive learning\,
originally proposed for image processing\, to the complex realm of medica
l time series analysis presents unique challenges. Unlike other data form
ats\, medical time series data exhibit a hierarchical structure that enco
mpasses information at multiple levels\, including patients\, sessions\,
 trials\, samples\, and observations.\n\nThis seminar introduces COMET\, a
n innovative hierarchical framework designed to exploit data consistencie
s at all these inherent levels within medical time series data. COMET sys
tematically captures data consistency from four distinct data levels\, th
us maximizing the utilization of information in a self-supervised manner.
\n\nInstructors Biosketch\nDr. Xiang Zhang is an Assistant Professor at
the Department of Computer Science at UNC Charlotte. He is serving as the
director of Charlotte Machine Learning Lab (CharMLab) since 2023. Before
joining UNC Charlotte\, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Universi

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract: \nToday's presentation is based on a one-yea
r multimedia campaign pilot that was implemented on a college campus to i
ncrease awareness about the importance of heart health among the student
population. The campaign\, Heart Healthy U\, focused on nutrition and phy
sical activity because research indicates that the transition into emergi
ng adulthood is an ideal opportunity to intervene to modify unhealthy beh
aviors that would otherwise lead to cardio-metabolic risk factors for hea
rt disease. However\, although the campaign was compromised due to the C
OVID-19 pandemic\, it was also updated to include psychological well-bein

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract: \nMobile and wireless health have gained muc
h attention in the health informatics community since mobile phones have
widely become available to the public. More recently\, with the wide adop
tion of smart home devices and high-functioning smartphones\, conversatio
nal agents (e.g.\, Alexa\, Siri) increasingly became available in people'
 s everyday lives\, such as Alexa\, Siri\, or automobile driver's interfac
es. Furthermore\, generative AI\, such as ChatGPT\, has gained public att
ention\, and the possibilities of generative conversational artificial in
telligence (GCAI) systems show potential to support people's health in ev
eryday lives. In this talk\, I will discuss a few projects investigating
the opportunities and challenges of GCAI becoming integrated into technol
ogy supporting various health needs\, including mental health\, parenting
young children\, and caregiving individuals with Alzheimer's disease and
related dementias. I discuss various roles GCAI can play\, its feasibili
ty in interacting safely and appropriately with end-users and challenges
that remain in GCAI becoming an integral part of health informatics appli
 cations.\n	\nInstructor Biosketch:\nDr. Jina Huh-Yoo is an associate prof

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract\nIn this presentation\, we explore the impact
of the COVID-19 pandemic on changes in alcohol consumption habits among
healthcare workers in the United States during the first wave of the pand
emic. Using a variety of supervised and unsupervised machine learning met
hods and models\, including decision trees\, logistic regression\, suppor
 t vector machines\, multilayer perceptrons\, XGBoost\, CatBoost\, LightGB
 M\, AdaBoost\, Chi-Squared Test\, mutual information\, KModes clustering\
, and the synthetic minority oversampling technique\, we analyzed mental
health survey data from the University of Michigan Inter-University Conso
rtium for Political and Social Research. Our objective was to investigate
the connections between COVID-19-related adverse effects and shifts in a
lcohol consumption habits among healthcare workers. Our analysis of the s
upervised and unsupervised methods revealed that healthcare workers who h
ad children at home during the first wave of the pandemic in the US consu
med more alcohol. We also found that changes in work schedules due to the
COVID-19 pandemic were linked to alterations in alcohol use habits. Addi
tional factors\, such as changes in food consumption\, age\, gender\, geo
graphical characteristics\, changes in sleep habits\, news consumption vo
lume\, and screen time\, also significantly predicted increased alcohol u
se among healthcare workers in the United States.\n \nInstructors Biosket
