DESCRIPTION:"A Midscale Quantum Computer Based on Trapped Ions"\n\nAt Univ
ersity of Maryland\, we have constructed a fully programmable\, ion-based
quantum computer with the goal of realizing an error-corrected logical q
uantum bit.\n\nI will report on the performance of our integrated device\
, including operation with more than 20 ion qubits\, fidelities of single
 - and two-qubit gates\, and their dominant errors.\n\nI will present the
implementation of the building blocks of error correction in our system\,
and its first applications to the simulation of quantum many-body physic
s.\n\nI will conclude with a discussion of the physical limitations of ou
r approach\, as well as ways to address these and build a 50+-qubit quant
um computation and simulation platform based on trapped ions.\n\nThis wor
k is supported by the ARO with funding from the IARPA LogiQ program\, the
NSF Practical Fully-Connected Quantum Computer program\, the DOE program
on Quantum Computing in Chemical and Material Sciences\, the AFOSR MURI
on Quantum Measurement and Verification\, and the AFOSR MURI on Interacti
ve Quantum Computation and Communication Protocols.\n\nThis event will be
presented remotely using Zoom. Please join in here: https://duke.zoom.us

DESCRIPTION:Layered 2d hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) can be
created by combining a wide range of possible inorganic components with
an even broader range of organic molecules\, offering considerable flexib
ility to fine-tune their synthesizability and properties. This talk focus
es on computational predictions of the electronic energy levels of new 2d
HOIP materials. Such predictions pose a considerable challenge due to hi
gh required levels of theory and large unit cells (hundreds of atoms) ass
ociated with typical 2d HOIPs. We here use high-precision\, all-electron
hybrid density functional theory including spin-orbit coupling\, showing
that this combination provides descriptions of the quantum-well like ener
gy level alignment in lead halide based oligothiophene perovskites in exc
ellent agreement with experiments. We then employ the same approach to pr
edictively address the electronic properties of a broad range of further
 2d HOIPs\, including lead-free (Ag-Bi) based ones. As a final point\, we
show that the details of the atomic structure used to predict electronic
properties matter significantly\, even in a qualitative sense\, by determ
ining energy level alignments and\, therefore\, which component (organic
or inorganic) forms the band edges. A complete structural understanding o
f a given target 2d HOIP is thus essential for faithfully predicting the
properties that can be leveraged within this promising new semiconductor
 materials space.

DESCRIPTION:The quantum paraelectric behavior and strongly anharmonic latt
ice dynamics of SrTiO3 have attracted interest for decades. Reflecting th
e incipient ferroelectric (FE) instability near the quantum critical poin
t and couplings between transverse acoustic (TA) and optic (TO) phonons\,
anomalous phonon intensities were observed from inelastic neutron scatte
ring (INS) experiments on SrTiO3 using the state-of-art instruments at Oa
k Ridge National Laboratory. The S(Q\,E) data reveal a strongly anomalous
evolution of TA intensity as TO softens. The experimental trends are con
firmed and rationalized using DFT simulations including anharmonic renorm
alization. By analyzing the temperature-dependent force constants (FC) an
d eigenvectors\, it is found that the structure factors of phonon modes c
hange dramatically with temperature\, as a direct consequence of the anha
rmonicity in this system. Moreover\, we identify that the changes of Ti a
nd O eigenvectors are responsible for these striking observations\, origi
nating from FC changes in the Ti-O bonds. These results establish how tem
perature-dependent phonon intensities from INS can provide direct insight
s into the behavior of phonon eigenvectors\, and also show how first-prin
ciples simulations can rationalize such anharmonic effects.

DESCRIPTION:How to deal with "those" people? You know\, the types of peopl

DESCRIPTION:Discussions around race in academia reflect the ongoing challe
nges we experience in broader society\, and faculty often hold important
roles at the forefront of the discourse. Faculty engage with race in both
personal and professional relationships with colleagues and collaborator
s\, with students through classroom discourse and as mentors and as manag
ers of staff in our academic units. In this workshop\, participants will
consider the ways that race specifically influences their work and intera
ctions with others\, and also practice skills and strategies that can lea
d to more equitable practices.\n\nThis event is not open to the public. A
ttendees must be current Duke faculty.

DESCRIPTION:Between 1973-2008\, a total of 768 earthquakes with a magnitud
e of 3.0 or higher shook the central and eastern United States (an averag
e of 25 each year). Meanwhile\, in 2009-2019\, the same region experience
d a total of 3\,642 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 or higher. Eviden
ce is mounting that many of these earthquakes were caused by the deep inj
ection of wastewater fluids resulting from oil and gas operations\, inclu
ding hydraulic fracturing (or "fracking").\n \nScott Poynter (Poynter Law
Group\, Little Rock\, AR) will offer a history of the novel litigation t
heories and processes involving earthquakes created by wastewater disposa
l processes from oil and gas operations\, including fracking. Poynter-the
legal pioneer responsible for most of the relevant lawsuits to date-will
discuss actions filed in Arkansas centered around the Guy-Greenbrier Ear
thquake Swarm\, as well as more recent cases\, appeals\, and settlements
reached in Oklahoma\, the nation's most seismically active state. His tal
k will be followed by a Q&A session. \n\nThis virtual event is part of t
he Energy Transition Seminar Series organized by the Duke University Ener
