DESCRIPTION:What does the Sabbath have to say to us about our collective o
verwhelm?\n\nTold as a collection of short stories\, SABBATH explores the
history of one of the world's most important spiritual practices and its
timeless relevance for a stressed-out\, modern world. From the biblical
accounts of creation to the 10 Commandments\, to the Puritans landing in
the New World\, to the contemporary practice of a "tech-sabbath\," SABBAT
H ties together our collective history\, our health practices\, our respo
nse to God's invitation\, and the search for a more sustainable way of li
fe. \n\nSpecial guest Michael Long from the Office of Spiritual Formation
and panelists Professor Norman Wirzba\, Rev. J. Dana Trent\, and Directo
r Martin Doblmeier will look anew at a theological practice that is meant
to be far more than an add-on to our weekly rhythm but speaks to "the ve
ry meaning of life." \n\nThere will also be an advanced screening and dis
cussion of a new public television film called SABBATH: An Ancient Practi
ce Meets the Modern World.\n\nThe screening\, free and open to the public
\, is hosted by the Clergy and Religion Research Collaborative\, a new pa
rtnership of the Clergy Health Initiative and the Religion and Social Cha
nge Lab. Refreshments will be provided and paid parking is available in t
 he Bryan Center Garage.

DESCRIPTION:The Prison Engagement Initiative's Graduate Cohort is excited
to invite you to a meaningful evening focused on one of our state's uglie
st practices: the death penalty. 137 individuals currently sit on NC's de
ath row\, awaiting state-sponsored execution. Ed Chapman used to be one o
f those individuals until he was exonerated in 2008. Ed will be sharing w
ith us about his journey\, from dealing with the trauma that accompanies
life in a death chamber to the struggles and successes he has had since h
is release. We will also be hearing accounts from others on death row via
Lynden Harris\, author of "Right Here\, Right Now." The racial history o
f the death penalty in NC will be told through a short documentary film\,
Racist Roots\, created by NC's Center for Death Penalty Litigation. Fina
lly\, we will have a panel discussion\, featuring local professionals who
have all intersected the horror of NC's death row from different angles\
 , including: a defense attorney\, psychologist\, prison chaplain\, and re
storative justice practitioner. This event is being co-sponsored by the W
ilson Center for Science and Justice\, Duke Law's Criminal Defense Clinic
