DESCRIPTION:Rita Strack obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular B
iology from the University of Chicago. While there\, she worked with Benj
amin Glick and Robert Keenan to engineer improved variants of the red flu
orescent protein DsRed\, and also studied the chemical mechanism of chrom
ophore formation in DsRed. She continued her research as a postdoctoral f
ellow in Samie Jaffrey's laboratory at Weill Cornell Medical College\, wh
ere she developed fluorescent reporters for live-cell imaging of RNA such
as Spinach2. She has a broad range of interests including imaging\, spat
ial biology\, chemical biology\, and machine learning. Rita was a senior
editor at Nature Methods starting in November 2014 and she was appointed
as Chief Editor at Nature Biomedical Engineering in August\, 2025. She ca
n be contacted at rita.strack@us.nature.com.\n\nThis seminar will introdu
ce Nature Biomedical Engineering and our editorial criteria\, discuss the
life of a manuscript from submission to publication\, offer insights int
o how editors work\, and provide tips on publishing high quality technolo
 gy papers.

DESCRIPTION:ECM Biophysics and Cancer: Mechanisms\, Models\, and Therapeut
ic Insights\nMicroenvironmental changes contribute to the pathogenesis of
cancer\, but our understanding of how altered cell heterogeneity\, extra
cellular matrix (ECM) deposition\, and mechanical cues impact the develop
ment\, progression\, and therapy response of cancer is relatively limited
. More intricate models are needed to elucidate the complex biochemical a
nd biophysical interactions that drive tumor initiation\, metastasis\, me
tabolic adaptation\, and immune evasion. The fields of biomaterials and t
umor engineering provide increasingly sophisticated tools and strategies
to recapitulate and monitor relevant properties of tumor-microenvironment
interactions. These approaches not only bear tremendous potential to adv
ance our current understanding of cancer but are also increasingly explor
ed for more clinically relevant drug testing. This talk will highlight sp
ecific examples of how the microenvironment regulates the highly dynamic
nature of cancer and will outline opportunities and challenges of the fie
ld of tumor engineering.\nClaudia Fischbach-Teschl is the James M & Marsh
a McCormick Director and Stanley Bryer 1946 Professor of Biomedical Engin
eering at Cornell University. She received her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Te
chnology from the University of Regensburg\, Germany and conducted her po
stdoctoral work at Harvard University in the Division of Engineering and
Applied Sciences. Her lab utilizes engineering tools and strategies to ga
in a better understanding of how tumor-microenvironment interactions regu
late cancer development\, progression\, and therapy resistance with a foc
us on cell-ECM interactions. She is a fellow of the American Institute fo
r Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE)\, the Biomedical Engineering
Society\, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. She is t
he recipient of the Momentum Mid-Career Award by the Cellular and Molecul
ar Bioengineering Special Interest Group of the Biomedical Engineering So
ciety (BMES) and the inaugural awardee of a Rosalind Franklin Award by th
e Max Planck Centre for Physics in Medicine in Germany. She is a Senior E
ditor of Cancer Research\, and serves on the Editorial Board of the ACS j
ournal Biomaterials Science and Engineering and Tissue Engineering. She i
s an advocate for interdisciplinary cancer research and has written Op-Ed
articles on this topic including in Scientific American.

DESCRIPTION:The rapid proliferation and diffusion of large language model
driven agentic inference continue to fuel an unprecedented demand for sem
iconductors for high-performance compute. Addressing this compute demand
goes beyond just CMOS logic transistor scaling and requires a system-driv
en rethink of semiconductor research. In this talk\, we explore emerging
semiconductor technology pillars essential for the next gen computing. I
n the first pillar\, we will discuss Complementary FETs (CFET) utilizing
next-generation gate stacks processed under low thermal budgets. In the n
ext pillar\, we will address the impending SRAM Scaling Wall by transitio
ning to fast memory alternatives that surpass the density limitations of
traditional SRAM. In the third pillar\, we will present a thermally resil
ient persistent memory based on ferroelectric materials to implement 3D m
emory-on-logic hardware. In the final pillar\, we will present a new hard
ware that integrates logic functions within memory arrays to support low
latency iterative AI reasoning. We will end with a discussion on how the
introduction of these technologies necessitates a deeper understanding of
reliability physics and characteristics.\n\nBio: Suman Datta received th
e B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Te
chnology\, Kanpur\, India and the Ph.D degree in Electrical and Computer
Engineering from University of Cincinnati\, Cincinnati\, Ohio. He joined
Georgia Tech's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) as the
Joseph M. Pettit Chair and Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) Eminent Schol
ar in the Fall of 2022. From 2016 till 2022\, he was the Stinson Endowed
Chair Professor of Nanotechnology in the Department of Electrical Enginee
ring at the University of Notre Dame\, Notre Dame\, Indiana\, where he di
rected research in the Nanoelectronic Devices and Circuits Laboratory. He
was the Director of the multi-university $40.4M SRC and DARPA sponsored
Applications and Systems-driven Center for Energy-efficient integrated Na
noTechnologies (ASCENT) till Dec 2022. In addition\, he was the Director
of the SRC and NSF sponsored Center for Extremely Energy Efficient Collec
tive Electronics (EXCEL). His research involves heterogenous computing\,
 brain-inspired computing\, in-memory/near-memory computing and cryogenic
computing using advanced CMOS and beyond CMOS devices.
